Let’s Playing: Catherine (Trial Version)

By Spencer . January 27, 2011 . 5:41pm

imageIn case you forgot, there’s a Catherine demo to download. Log on to PlayStation Network with a Japanese account and you can get it right now. Atlus also added the demo to Xbox Live, but it’s locked for Gold Members only.

The demo starts out with a tutorial. You can move Vincent and push blocks by pressing circle. Blocks can be pushed in all directions, even off the tower. The goal of the action scenes is to escape the monster chasing you. Just a small tip – use the undo command if you make a mistake. Hold down select to reverse a few of Vincent’s moves one at a time. Also, you may want to build a staircase instead of making the tower fall…. the block item you get in Chapter 2 (press square to make a block appear) is quite helpful.

After the action part we see Vincent with Katherine. Katherine asks Vincent what’s wrong and knows little details about him like how many cubes of sugar he puts in his coffee (two). The next scene cuts to the Stray Sheep where Vincent and his pals discuss the rumor shown in the news. A man was found dead in his sleep. Rumor has it if you have a dream where you fall and you don’t wake up you die. Later on Catherine steps in and players get to try one more nightmare scene.

If you didn’t download it already go for it and come back in the comments to share your thoughts about Catherine.

  • Uhm so how do I find it? I cant understand the icons on the store and the layout, lol! English please?!

    • its the same as the psn store second slot isnew realeas

      • Thanks! I guess I checked to early before it was up and couldnt find it.

    • cmurph666

In the centre it says, “What’s New.” That’s the new stuff.
It should be the top option.

Also, the pictures on the home screen change. Wait until it says “Catherine Trial Ver.” in red. Click that.

    • I SWEAR to Jeebus I’m not stalking you. BUT:

Did you really forget how to get demos in less than half a year?

      • I only used it once to get Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 demo in Sept was it, thats a long time ago, lol.

  • I downloaded it and found the second climbing part somewhat disturbing in a good way, what with the hand with the fork trying to kill me. Wish I knew what was being said, though, by anyone, but I guess that’s what English releases are for. Still, I hope the entire game doesn’t revolve around climbing block puzzles.

    • cj_iwakura

Mostly talk about the victim having died in the scene between Vincent and his friends. Katherine is talking about their relationship, and Vincent asks if she’s had a dream where she dies. Katherine replies that she has had a dream where she kills someone.

      • That sounds really scary >_> I get Mirai Nikki vibe from Kat

        • Darkrise

Love to see yandere develope with Katherine. =)

          • Testsubject909

Katherine definitely has a Yandere feel…

          • Aoshi00

To be fair, Kat is under tremendous pressure, her parents asking how she’s doing, and all her friends are either married and have kids, I could sympathise w/ her.. in fact I would like to go the Kat route first and be a good bf hopefully.. but the bit about killing someone in her dream was funny :)

      • That’s because she probably has.

  • Xeahnort

Uuuugh! I really want to try this demo but my 60 Gb launch PS3 died yesterday and i´m silver.

    I´m so unlucky :(

  • Pichi

Does the email text have any impact on the next stage or is it just to see how the email thing goes?

    • cj_iwakura

It will affect the ending, I believe. Your standing with Katherine and Catherine. I think knowing Japanese will be CRUCIAL for the texting element.

      • Pichi

Right about that. I played that part twice, one will all replays as I can and another not responding to her at all. The bar went to blue for the first one, while the second, since I did not respond, she didn’t email me back.

I have no idea if the demo had a slightly different ending or anything or what getting more to the blue side meant for the demo.

        • Zeik56

In case you didn’t know, you can actually change each line of the text by canceling and reselecting, which results in different karma effects.

  • PersonaBull

I stayed up late waiting specifically for this demo. I can’t understand Japanese aside from a few words/phrases, but the acting and visual expressions did an excellent job of keeping me relatively up to speed with what they were talking about.

The gameplay was simplistic in an excellent way. It’s especially tense when not only are blocks falling beneath you, but you’re constantly getting harassed by giant, horrifying, fork-wielding hands. I got forked at least 5 times in that second stage ;o; I also kept pushing the blocks instead of pulling them. It’s definitely better to pull them up and make a staircase than to topple your escape route. Too many times did I completely cut myself off.

Considering I stand no chance in conquering the Japanese language in the next couple weeks, I’m hoping for honestly just a subbed localization. The voice acting is excellent and matches each character quite well from what I’ve seen so far. It’s especially amusing to hear Vincent’s little catch phrases during the action stages.

  • Zonic505

Sadly, I gotta wait until next week to download this….I hope to enjoy it.

Hmm, maybe I don’t. Free Gold Weekend starts tomorrow in Japan, so perhaps that’ll let me download the demo before it’s available for Silver members.

  • Darkrise

I just started and got stuck on the 2nd stage, that fork and giant hand at 10 feet away just isn’t helping. But it was quite a thrill, really liked the demo, voices were top-notch and I’m kind of glad that I understood a bit of the dialogue so I wasn’t completely left in the dark. Still, I really hope Atlus comes through and localizes this. Can’t read kanji or any japanese. =P

    • I was stuck in the 2nd stage too, when the door is just beyond my grasp and I get stabbed with the bloody fork. Luckily I created the box at the right spot and FREEDOM!! Holy god that was tense

  • Testsubject909

Huh… My 666th comment… Might as well make an unholy wish while I’m at it.

Please. Atlus. Throw us a bone… Tell us this game will get localized… Oh for Lucifer’s sake, tell us it will be!

    Atlus, you’re breaking my heart.

Catherine… I’m down on my knees. I’m begging you please to come home…

    (couldn’t resist.)

  • IceRomancer

Alls I gotta say is I could see this game being very addictive!
I’m not a big puzzle game fan but I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

  • Icon

I’ll wait for the English version. Hope the game’s good!

    • Darkrise

Check out the demo gameplay on youtube just so you know what to expect.

  • Barrit

I think the gameplay is very well done. Very fast and easy to get the hang of. I can’t seem to get gold in the first stage no matter how fast I complete it though. Has anyone been able to get the gold prize? I only get silver.

    • PersonaBull

I’ve only gotten silver the two times I tried it out, but this guy got gold: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RG7qlATxJg

      eDIt: Also, I’ve only managed to get bronze on the second stage. Dem forks are deadly >.>;;

      • Barrit

Nice thx. Now I can get gold on the first stage, but only silver on the 2nd.

      • Zero_Destiny

        YOSH!!! getto!!!!
That’s my fav part lol. Needless to say I sux at this game so don’t feel to bad. But I had fun and was able to pull through the first level. I’ll play it seriously this weekend, to busy.

  • Loved the demo and I also hope Atlus localize this.
The demo was quite fast and impressive. I was able to understand some of what was said and written.

  • Im gonna download this once im done with tests….

ON OTHER NEWS, AR TONELICO 3 MAIN PAGE IS ONLINE http://nisamerica.com/games/atq/ AHHHH OHHH OHH MY GOD OHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

    • Dude more importantly it has a premium edition!!!! Day 1 Baby Day 1!!!!!

      • Zero_Destiny

Nice, looks like we get an OST and an Artbook!!! Super excited I like the box but I’m kind of disappointed that they really just reused the normal art (for the most part) for the bigger box :( Now it just doesn’t feel as special. Plus I don’t like how the box push aside purple haired girl :( Oh well a Big Box + OST + Artbook = Win so who really cares. Can’t wait until March/me going into poverty lol.

        • PLEASE let it the OST be in every store! That’s my biggest wish for that game, is the soundtrack!

          • Zero_Destiny

We can only hope. Website doesn’t say much just gave some preview pics, in it they show the game w/Big Box, Blu-Ray case, Artbook and a disc labeled OST. Really hope they give it away to all stores too (still kind of bummed to miss the OST for Rorona) especially since I love Gust music. Even willing to pay a little more for it (Like a Super Limited Edition) lol.

If they give the game on a plastic bag i would gladly pay 60$ + import + protection for plastic bags xD

          • Zero_Destiny

Oh no it’s still day 1. I have money put away just for it, don’t worry. But wow you sir have to the biggest fan of AR TONELICO. lol

    • Zero_Destiny
      • OMG The set is so worth it and its packed with so much, soundtrack, artbook, and a calendar! OMG Preordering soon!!!

      • Already preordered…. MUAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

      • OF course, the calendar version

  • PrinceHeir

damn it i forgot to DL this.

i’ll probably try this tomorrow though ^^

  • Zero_Destiny

Now it’s official. We NEED this lol. I’m not really worried though, I’m sure Atlus will bring it over. They’d have to be real dumb to miss out on this and DUMB isn’t something I’d usually associate Atlus with :)

  • I laughed so hard when I made the exit door fall into the black abyss below and Vincent got killed by a giant bloody fork. I guess I forgot I could reverse actions, though I never tried it after the tutorial showed that I could use it.

Does the game classify as a survival horror puzzle game?

  • Edgar Cumplido

This game is quite enjoyable and looks amazing though stage to was a little trial and error since i kept getting stuck at the end but hey is fun and here hoping for a us release with all goodies

  • Aoshi00

wow, I just tried the demo, very nice puzzles and the atmosphere is scary. The only thing that bothered me was the voice of the guy that gives you hints, he was the announcer of the pre-order bonus in the trailers, somehow his voice sounds really annoying and irks me a great deal, I hope we don’t hear that much of him for the rest of the game.. otherwise Yamadera Koichi, Mitsuishi Kotono, and Koyasu Takehito sound amazing, I haven’t heard Yamadera done a role like this in a long time (kind of like Ryoga in Ranma 1/2).. argh, I think I’m facing the dilemma like Vincent’s very soon *.*… so this game is more scary in more ways than one..

    • Code

rohnoz >O>~!? Is it a sexy dilemma!? Or is it being vaporized into a skeleton kind of dilemma omo; rar, if it’s the latter can I have your game collection I’d take super really good care of it!

Seriously though excellent stuff, I’m really hoping the English casting can be equally strong, or at the least dual tracks omo (that’s a request I don’t often make either). Atlus is pretty good either way though I trust them on this kind of thing >w<

      • Aoshi00

nah, just being pressured into getting married dilemma, I’m almost as old as Vincent :(… I’ll have you on my will okay lol..

The game was very intense like you said, gave me goose bumps and almost had nightmares thinking about it.. and this was just easy mode.. the trophies are fun too, makes you want to replay them.

If it’s dubbed in Eng. in the US ver, I would triple dip :)

        • Darkrise

I would want dual audio. Atlus makes has some good and bad dubs like Stella Deus(bad) but I’d still want to keep the japanese voices of this game cuz they’re all just wonderfully done and I want to keep hearing them while I can understand with subs. =P

        • Code

Ohh snap, well hopefully you won’t have nightmares where you get fork’d and explode opo;; Good luck you’ll figure it out I’m sure >ww<

        • I can’t imagine Atlus wouldn’t dub it in English.

          • Aoshi00

I meant if it’s brought over at all, I would get the game again just for the Eng dub.

  • puchinri

The demo was too much fun. And so damn exciting. Nightmare!Katherine was thrilling. They certainly make climbing up a tower and pushing/pulling blocks awfully intense and a lot of fun.

I really liked how expressive it all was, from the voices to the animated scenes and character models. The games style in general is a lot of fun too, and I love the music.

I’m really curious about the plot (and psyche) though. So far in the nightmares, we’ve only seen stuff revolving around Katherine and Vincent’s relationship with her, so I wonder if we’ll see anything Catherine related in the nightmares and if not, how she relates to them. And if Katherine has a dream about killing someone around the time Vincent has his nightmare, I wonder if there’s some conntected/linked dreaming going on or something.

Even though I want to play the entire game desperately, I almost just want to sit back and watch gameplay or something of the story unfold. Then again, I guess it won’t be ‘my story’ unless I play it all myself.

  • Code

rar, just finished the demo, and wow seriously can’t wait~! Gameplay felt really smooth, I was expecting it to feel a little more chunky, but Vincent moves really quickly, maybe a hair too quick well “scaling” as I scaled him off the side once >w<; honestly though I can really see once your use to the controls, being able to fly through stages, and you gotta be pretty fast everything considered. Seriously gameplay end I was really pleased, it was about what I expected but so much more intense then I had anticipated >ww<'

    • mirumu

I just finished it too, and you pretty much summed up my thoughts. I was a bit concerned when the puzzle elements were originally announced, but that second level was great. Hair-raising and merciless, and yet a lot of fun. The way the sound added to the atmosphere especially blew me away. I don’t want to constantly keep on at Atlus for a localization, but well…please, please?

      • Code

Yeah it really surprised me was just how fast paced the gameplay is, you really gotta keep on your toes, or your going to get cut down opo; and even when you do get ahead a little, it doesn’t take long before she’s at your heels again >ww<;; I'm pretty confident Atlus will be localizing it but yeah, seriously if only they'd give us a sign soon TwT

        • From what I’ve read, anything above Easy takes away the Undo option. So I guess I’ll be dying plenty more. Pretty excited too now.

Also, it bodes really well for a new SMT game on the PS3 at any point. It really is a damn good looking game.

  • The visuals were superb!! Everything is crisp and fluid, from the anime cutscenes to the 3D scenes and they’re stylish too. Atlus definitely is not cutting any corners in this game, and hopefully the quality that was in the demo is retained in the retail version.

    Go Atlus!!

  • malek86

Oh, hey, I forgot abouyt this one. Time to download!

… no, wait, time to download the system update first ‘-_-

    • malek86

Finally, I got to try it. I must say, the production values seem higher than I expected – yes, the animated cutscenes were quite barebone, but the engine cutscenes looked pretty good, as does the game itself. Looks like Atlus’ first foray into HD is a good one.

The gameplay was pretty smooth, but block pushing isn’t exactly my favorite cup of tea. I got burned out on that after Soul Reaver, and besides, puzzle games aren’t really my thing. I hope the full game isn’t all about block pushing.

  • I loved it , already played it 3 times XD *__* cant wait to own it!

  • Oh thanks for the write up of how to play, it was nice being able to play the demo. I am so sold on this game now (Katherine and Tobias and even the MC were all awesome. Day 1 Baby Day 1!!!

  • Tried out the demo and had to play it several more times afterward. I feel like they got the atmosphere, inside and outside the nightmares down quite nicely. Adrenaline was pumping hard when trying to get to the stairs, especially the first time around. Dialogue and cutscenes were looking good. Even the title screen oozed with style. All in all, wish there was more cuz I can’t get enough.

  • i want. x_x

  • After playing the demo I think I’ve decided I love it so much that I need to import it twice!

    • Aoshi00

Corresponding to the covers, I would go w/ Kat first on 360 and go w/ Cat on PS3, though I might be a little scared to play the game twice lol..

  • HarryHodd

This is as good or better than I thought it was going to be. The demo was addictive and fun. Can’t wait for the full game.
