PSP Port Gives Android Users A Taste Of Tactical RPGs [Update]

By Spencer . February 7, 2011 . 2:21am

HyperdevBox and Idea Factory brought Spectral Souls: Resurrection of the Ethereal Empires to Android. If that name sounds familiar you may be thinking of the PSP version. NIS America published the tactical RPG in North America almost five years ago. Let’s take a look at Spectral Souls running on Android with touchscreen controls.

Spectral Souls: Resurrection of the Ethereal Empires, just like the PSP release, has 85 characters and a promised 100+ hours of gameplay. It’s available now in Japanese, but HyperdevBox says they are working on an English version.

Update: Spectral Souls is also available in English on the Android store. Thanks for pointing that out HyperdevBox crew!

    oooooo………..looks promising. inb4TS.

It is a good game, and it has a lot of value assuming it’s marketed at the price of most Android apps :) I just hope the Android version has less loading than the PSP one, maybe this could be the chance for Idea Factory to expand its tiny western audience.

That said, it’s really a shame that the first Spectral Souls wasn’t localized, the second chapter had many references to the world’s history that were lost on anyone who played SS2 as his first Spectral game.

That trailer was a little too epic. Wasn’t Spectral Souls that somewhat difficult SRPG?

  • Kai2591

Would be nice to have a JRPG on my android….but i FAIL at SRPGs~

And its very nice of them to try and make an English version :)
    Just keep the jap audio.

Thanks for the post on Spectral Souls, however there is a small error, the English version of the game is already out (fully localized in English), just the English version of the “Trailer” is not yet available on Youtube :D

Awesome! thanks for the heads up~

Is the audio in English or Japanese though?

      • http://twitter.com/Hyperdevbox Hyperdevbox

Audio in English however there is no voice over during the dialog though, but there are ton of voices per characters for every different skills, if you know the PSP version from NIS, then you’ll find the exact same voices on the Android version :)

Good idea. It’s also good that the main program is only 2MB in size.

Unfortunately, the price is not too low (more than 10€ for me, far higher than most other games), and also, apparently only the relatively high-end devices can run it (so it’s a no-go for my G1 or anyone with a Magic, etc.).

Maybe it would have been a better idea to port a less intensive game. Well, maybe next time…

Hopefully there are ton of great games on the Market so everybody should be able to find the right game for the right price, however if you are into JSRPG then you’ll discover that Spectral Souls Android is simply the best ratio Price VS Quality JSRPG for Android, for 10€, you’ll get the full PSP game (not a PSX game running on emulator), a game running on high resolution screen (so it will follow you for a long time when you’ll change the phone or get your new tablet) , is touch enabled and will have support for mapped Keyboard too (starting tomorrow) and finally, it is priced cheaper than the equivalent PSN PSP version ;) … and, did I mention that we fixed all the loading time issues ? :D

Eheh, sorry but I don’t intend on changing my phone anytime soon. I paid quite a bit for my G1 (I come from standard phones, so smartphones look very expensive to me…), and I feel like I should keep it for a good while. After all, aside from the poor graphical capabilities, it’s still a pretty decent terminal :D

As for the price, not saying it wouldn’t be worth it, but it might scare some customers away.

Btw, do you guys intend on porting more games after this one?

      • majorhavok

How would it look running at 1080p through HDMI? You got any screenshots?

      • NeoTechni

        • http://twitter.com/Hyperdevbox Hyperdevbox

          You are welcome :)

The game will run and It will look gorgeous on the Xperia Play, we just released today an update (ver 1.4) so you can map keyboard keys to any of the ingame button, guess what ? The Xperia play has exactly the set of button that we need LOL ;) , simply said, Xperia Play + “Spectral Souls android” = the first true HIRES PSP gaming experience on android…. Spread the Word :D

Also, We will be at the MWC in Barcelona, at the Google Area, demonstrating our Spectral Souls android and ExZeus Arcade, so for those who are attending too, come and cheers us :D

$ 14.99 not bad but definitely not what android users are used to for games. It’s over 1gb in size though so there you go.
