By Spencer . February 21, 2011 . 12:06am

imagePlayStation Network lambs grab those digital dollars. Square Enix, as we discovered earlier, is releasing Xenogears as a PsOne Classic in North America.

You don’t have to wait long to see Welltall raze Fei Fong Wong’s idyllic village either. Xenogears will be available as a digital download this Tuesday. Before you purge Wels or discover the truth about Citan, read what Soraya Saga had to say about developing Xenogears.

Thanks to everyone who sent this tip in. Aquasol DXes for all!

  • It’s about time. I cant wait to get my hands on this game again.

  • Bakuryukun

I already have the original disc. But I’m glad more people will get to experience the awesomeness that is Xenogears Disc 01

    • Draparde

      same, and lmao xD

    • skymap

Disc 2 may have it’s hiccups, but it’s not a complete experience without it.

      • Bakuryukun

It’s also not a complete experience even with it.

        • Sadly that’s true, but I wouldn’t dismiss it nonetheless, it had it’s nice parts and the ending was funny. :P

          • Bakuryukun

  • PrinceHeir

oh my god finally after a decade i can play this :D

incidentally im playing Xenosaga Epsiode III right now. guess you know what game im playing next :)

please square release Parasite Eve archives a few weeks before The 3rd Birthday release as well as chrono cross/trigger on PSN.

it seems the PS1 store is almost complete?(at least in japan) any other games i should know of that needs a PSN release? Tomba comes into mind :P

    • Zero_Destiny

PSN needs more love. So have you joined Siliconera Bounce yet? Lee and I replied to your comment on that post and told you how you should join. Lee gave the link you need too. Come join it. You can review games, give impressions, rate games, make polls, ask questions, and just hang out with everyone from Silicon Era. You should check it out. :)

  • Please, Square! Make Europe the next stop!

You never released it here, so it’s about time you pay the debt!

    • malek86

If it was never released in Europe, I seriosuly doubt they can release it now, considering these are just ISOs.

    • Gelsa

Just make an american psn account in a taxfree state and use psn-cards for your funds. There are stores online that sells american psn-cards that email you the code within 15 minutes.

I never buy psone classics from the european store. The 17.5% slowdown just sucks.

      • Zero_Destiny

Don’t know if that works since I’m living in the USA but I do know you can do that in the US for a Japaneses PSN account and download Japaneses PS1 games. So let’s help out our friends in Europe. :) Make a PSN account for JUST North America. Sales Tax-Free States: are Delaware, Oregon, and New Hampshire. So I picked some random cities. Now let’s see Newark, DE is in the New Castle county and it’s zip Code is 19702 with it’s Area code being 302. North Powder, OR is in the Union county and it’s zip code is 97867 with it’s area code being 541. And last there’s Kingston, NH who’s zip code is 03848 and it’s area code is 603. I think that should be enough info to make a useful American PSN account. Ask if you need more info.
        Info: [http://www.ps3vault.com/attention-europe-the-best-way-to-buy-us-playstation-store-content-6614]
I don’t know where you can import the cards. Ask Gelsa, maybe knows.

        • Gelsa

Does work, I’ve done it myself, think I’m listed in 90210 though :) As for a place to buy the psn-cards I use Shattered Crystal. First time you order there they actually call you though and asks you several questions regarding where you live (they asked me to name a road that intersected the road where I lived among other things) to verify that you are who you are. They also take paypal which is nice.

          • Zero_Destiny

Ah a Cali account lol Will there you have it. Make an North American Account just for the PSN, pick one of the places I gave or any place I think should be fine and go to Shattered Crystal or Whatnot *if you’re willing* and there you go. I’m sure some other users can help you find a way to import the cards if you need it.

        • Aoshi00

I really dislike being charged tax for buying DLC or downloadable games on PSN, but I never thought of making a separate PSN acct for a tax-free state. But you still need to buy avatars w/ your real account right, because avatars stick to IDs unlike 360 gamer pics. I was going to use the free Malicious avatars from Jpn PSN w/ my main US account, but they don’t show up unless I log in w/ my Jpn acct.. Maybe I should make a Cali acct for DLC/games though, just not avatars (tax was one thing that makes me prefer getting d/labe games on XBL)..

        • Yui

You, sir, are a lifesaver. I look forward to finally having opportunity to play some of the NA PSN Classics very soon! :D

          • Zero_Destiny

Thank Gelsa. He/she(sorry I don’t you that well) came up with the idea and told you how to get US PSN cards.

          • Yui

That, is a good point. I apologise. Thanks, Gelsa! I still intend to pick this, and a few other games, up very soon. :D

      • Kunio_kun

Does the U.S.A. PSN get charged tax in any state(s)?
I live in Virginia, where there are MOS DEF state and local sales taxes, but I’ve NEVER been assessed any additional amount whether purchasing a gift card at a local store nor have I ever paid tax when downloading any of the 600+ items I’ve gotten from the PSN Store…

        • Gelsa

Some states has it yeah. When I first made my american psn-account I didn’t know about that so just took the first and best address I could find online. Later I saw that I was going to get charged extra tax and “moved” to another state ;)

Some people are actually raging against this since they have to pay tax for the card in the store when bying the physically card and then again online.

    • Kunio_kun

^ Dear OP complaining about never getting it in Europe,
      We’re still waiting on Terranigma.
      The States

  • Zero_Destiny

YES!!!!!!! Always wanted this game but sadly it was a harder to find game. Never did see it in real life. So gotta buy it. Especially after talking to Prince so much he’s got me really interested into the Xeno games. (let’s not discus how Gears is different from Saga I know all the info). Plus the game was made from some of the best minds at square. So downloading and playing it. And then one day I’ll still buy the physical game just to finish off my collection you know. ;)

    • PrinceHeir

      hell yeah :D

this will be an amazing tuesday thanks square now get back to work on Parasite Eve Archives and Chrono Cross/Trigger PSN release :P

      • Zero_Destiny

Chrono Cross on PSN would fulfill my long dream of playing that masterpiece on the go but you don’t want the PS1 version of Trigger as long as you have a DS. The PS1 version is very laggy with slowdowns and lame loadtimes. The DS version has a new ending, puts all the info on one screen and the action on the other (so it’s not too crowded and is easier to read the numbers and stuff) and is pretty much just a port of the ps1 version besides some minor changes like I mentioned but it has no lag or load times. Also let me stress this even more SILCIONERA BOUNCE IS AWESOME!!!!!! Come join it.

        • PrinceHeir

          i see.

ehh i don’t think square plans on porting trigger from the DS. oh well we still have chrono’s though :D

          okay2 i’ll join :P

          • Zero_Destiny

Yes!!! It’s awesome and addicting and is the reason why I’m up this late. lol It’ll be even more awesome with you on it!!!!

        • PrinceHeir

so wait you need a lunch account? not that i mind though ^^

          • Zero_Destiny

Yeah make an account for LUNCH from the Silicon Era bounce page. Everyone pretty much kept their name from this site. And join in on the discussions at Silicon Era Bounce. :)

        • kupomogli

I own Chrono Trigger DS but still haven’t played it. Does the DS version also have that cool “Bonus” feature which you could get to on the beginning of Chrono Trigger? Like a guide of sorts that shows all techs, monsters, maps, music, endings, etc.

Also while Chrono Trigger PSX has load times, there isn’t any other bugs. It’s just load times when entering and exiting your menu, changing screens, and slight load times whenever entering a battle.

The PSX version is technically better than the DS version because you can play it on both your tv or portable when it comes out to the PSN(even if you don’t have a PS3.) The SNES version is the best version for tv, DS is best for portable though. If you want to own a copy of the game for cheap and have it for both, the PSX is the way to go as it’s by far the most affordable. Less than $15 for a physical copy on Amazon that includes FF4(cfw required to be portable) or $5.99(probably) on the PSN. And who knows. The PSN version may not have the same load times as the original PSX version.

FF4 on Final Fantasy Chronicles is also the superior version. The load times are just as fast as the SNES version and it’s the harder version that includes all the extras.

          • Zero_Destiny

Was too lazy to boot up the old Chrono Trigger DS so I copied this off of wiki “The DS re-release contains all of the bonus material from the PlayStation port, as well as other enhancements. The added features include a more accurate translation by Tom Slattery, a dual-screen mode which clears the top screen of all menus, a self-completing map screen, and a default “run” option. It also featured the option to choose between two control schemes: one mirroring the original SNES controls, and the other making use of the DS’s touch screen. Masato Kato participated in development, overseeing the addition of the monster-battling Arena, two new areas, the Lost Sanctum and the Dimensional Vortex, and a new ending that further foreshadows the events of Chrono Cross. One of the areas within the Vortex uses the “Singing Mountain” song that was featured on the original Chrono Trigger soundtrack.” I think the game has the music thing and gallery and stuff in it too. Can’t remember. Now if we’re talking about Final Fantasy IV in FFC is the definitive version or not that game is almost impossible to answer since FFIV gets remade like every four or five years but I think the GBA game blows the ps1 game out of the water. Better looking graphics, harder difficulty, more new stuff in it, and a better translation. Plus you can play it on your TV with a Gameboy Player and is cheap.

          • kupomogli

FF4 for GBA isn’t as hard as the PSX version. The only good thing about the GBA version is the extra dungeons, but that doesn’t matter since the GBA version is a lagfest.

There are two GBA versions. The US/JPN version which have the differences of being translated in a different language, and then the PAL territory version. The two differences are that in the US/JPN versions, there is a ton of lag when actions are being placed when multiple monsters are on screen. Especially spells. Multiple bugs in the game, the most frequent which is making your characters take multiple turns in a row. The PAL version doesn’t have the lag that the US/JPN version had but instead it has input lag, so whenever pressing options on the battle menu it has a sort of noticeable lag to it, and the bug that characters can go multiple turns in a row is still there though not as frequent.

Though like you said, some of the graphics on the GBA version are better. Very few, but some. Also the GBA soundtrack is of lower quality, but it’s not that noticeable. Thankfully Squaresoft developed the GBA versions of FF5 and FF6 better. FF5 is pretty much perfect but the audio differences you will have to really pay attention to to notice, and FF6 which you can easily tell has worse audio but it’s still good, and lags ever so slightly, but only when using autocrossbow with Edgar.

  • And 90% of Siliconera posters and readers just had a fangasm.

    • Zero_Destiny

I fangasmed so hard I needed to put on some new clothes. :)
Then after thinking some more about who was behind this game and how it’s like episode five of a six part series I Nerdgasmed hardcore and once again had to changes clothes. Now let’s just hope I calm down. :D
And then I saw the Mech designs and the chara’s and well I don’t even know what I did, but it involved putting on some more clean clothes afterwords. Whew this is epic. XD

    • kupomogli

It really depends on how many of us don’t already own the game. While it’s nice seeing it on PSN, barely anything on PSN interests me since I own already own the games.

I am glad for the people who don’t own the games and don’t mind digital releases though. Xenogears is an amazing game and one of the best RPGs of all time.

      • Aoshi00

For such a classic game, buying it again digitally is totally worth it, what’s another 600 yen or $10 (?) to play it w/ more convenience and on both PS3/PSP if you love the game that much (I don’t use custom firmware). I bought Xenogears from the Jpn PSN when it came out alrdy, just like Symphony of the Night or Puzzle Fighters (though it rec’d a partial HD facelift).

I bought FF7-9 on PSN again even though my PS1 discs were perfect. I would’ve wanted to buy FF7-9 on the Jpn PSN as well if they weren’t for 1500 yen (since my Jpn PS1 discs can’t be played on my PS3), and yen cards make them cost almost double.

        • kupomogli

I just really don’t like buying stuff digitally. If you don’t use custom firmware and don’t mind buying digital stuff I see your point there. I don’t go out and download games I haven’t purchased, but I do rip my own copies from disc because I don’t want to pay for something I’ve already paid for previously and I’m using my own personal copy. Unfortunately, Brigandine Grand Edition, also on the PSN, won’t work when I rip a copy, so I would purchase that on the PSN but can’t.

    • I’m part of the other 10%, but I do want this game.

  • rainfire2010

This is exciting… Remember having it as a little kid and I just couldn’t figure out that stupid disk transfer… never got through the whole game…

  • I never got to play this game (only played Xenosaga and Xenoblade) but I am definitely looking forward to this.

  • skymap

Everyone had better fucking buy this.

    • Doing so. As soon as I get money… (About a week)

    • I already have it on disc.

      • Equus

        Heh…me too.

    • Yeah, sadly I haven’t played Xenogears yet. I’m planning on getting this.
I hope Vagrant Story comes out soon too so I can try that out.

    • NoElixirs

Yup. I was just planning on replaying Xenogears when the announcement coincided.

    • DAY 1.

  • badmoogle

And as usual Europe is getting the finger…

  • AWESOME! I’ve been waiting for this! I’ve bought at least a dozen PS1 games now, and I don’t even play….well…most of them. Gotta support this stuff!

  • Izludicus

I’m impressed they actually managed to get this out on PSN, I guess they must’ve fixed the freezing issue on that boss then.

  • Fonic

More or less my favorite PS1 game. Even though I have a perfectly working copy on my shelf I’ll probably get this version as well just for convenience and portability.

  • No europe release??? thats b******t

  • Finally I can finish this great game. Vagrant Story had an European PSN release and didn’t saw a NA release right?

  • Yamaneko22

    SE, what about Europe?

  • Code

rar, awesome, I actually really questioned if Xenogears would eventually get PSN release or not. I’m super glad to see it is though, if there’s any title out of Square’s PS1 library that deserves it, it’s Xenogears >w<'

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

    It’s Id time.

  • SneakyHawk

Woohoo! I can’t wait to try the game! :D

  • Allright:) Wonderful news!!

  • IceRomancer

I remember rent this game a couple times back in the day!
Maybe now i’ll finally beat it!

  • I can´t believe this is actually happening ;-; … Einhänder, i know you are next.

  • thebanditking

See video link for proper reaction to this news, I am buying this for sure.

    • Zero_Destiny

      All I can say is:

  • thaKingRocka

I’ve always been interested in trying this game out. I may grab it.

  • KyoyaHibari

At last I get to experience the classic everyone talks about :D

  • I like how the blog is all “Killzone!” and the comments are all “Xenogears!”

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Bought it on Amazon last week, will buy again on PSN this week.

  • BadenBadenPrinny

I hope they release the original Valkyrie Profile down the line, since the PSP version isn’t on there :(

Now I can finally see what the hype is about :3/ontopic

  • lol my boyfriend has been bugging me about this every few weeks, asking when it’ll be out. And now it’s finally coming out (even though we have an actual copy of the game…). He’s excited and will buy it. XD

idk, we just don’t touch our actual PS1 games, even though we have a PS2 & PS3. lol I even went and bought Suikoden I, FF7, FF8, and FFT on the PSN while we have the actual games. XD (I also bought FF9 on the PSN, but we don’t have an actual copy of that yet..) I guess it’s just my way of supporting the games I love.

  • puchinri

So now I don’t have to worry about not being able to play the game if I buy one of those fancy, limited edition copies. I’ll just get this and order one of those =u=

I’ll even dip into the money I was saving (and take some out to get Acceleration of Suguri while I’m at it).

Is there a list of the games Squeenix has announced or already for PSN for us? I can’t remember which ones we were going to get, but I’m hoping we’ll see Threads of Fate, Vagrant Story and LoM soon.

  • SneakyHawk

I apologize if this has been addressed but how much will the game cost when it’s released?

  • vrakanox

Oh you know it baby! DAY ONE!

  • Taosaur

I played this a good ten years ago and I could not wait for it to end. I don’t understand why people hold this mess of a game in such high esteem. The intention was certainly there, the execution was just… painful.
