You wouldn’t know it from watching Sega’s latest trailer for Super Monkey Ball 3D, but the game also features a “Monkey Fight” mode that’s similar to Super Smash Bros. You can read impressions of this here.

Super Monkey Ball 3D is a 3DS launch game, so it’ll be out on March 27th in the U.S. and March 25th in Europe, alongside the launch of the system.

  • Looks slower-paced than the other Monkey Ballz but much more colorful

  • Tokyo Guy

A quick comment, and then two problems about this game:

Of all the current releases here in Japan, this is the game I like the most. It should be noted that I have never cared for this series as I dislike the ball tilting premise as a game concept, however the fighting mode (think Smash Brothers) and the racing mode (think Mario Kart) are quite well done. Additionally the game has great music and is very colorful.

    Be aware however:

    1. You can NOT use 3D if you opt to play with the motion sensor. Simply put, the 3D effect is completely ruined and distorted if you are not directly in front of the screen looking at a specific angle. To this end, the movement and tilting of the 3DS means that you won’t be able to see what you’re doing and thus if you want to play in 3D you need to use the analogue pad.

    2. The 3D effect is “broken”. Essentially, if you turn the depth slider to the maximum position, the game distorts. This is most noticeable when you select game modes, as there are three different books on the top screen and they are completely blurred. The only way to play the game without distortion is to have the depth slider at half intensity. I question if this is a glitch with the game or not because it’s quite strange, though perhaps Sega has done this deliberately to avoid eye strain.
