This Week In Sales: Dynasty Warriors 7 Performs A Variable Attack

By Ishaan . March 16, 2011 . 4:33pm

Period: The week of March 7th – March 13th (2011)

Top-seller: Dynasty Warriors 7 – 253,090

Nintendo 3DS sales: 96,463 | Total sales: 680,850

Sales of Dissidia 012[duodecim]: Final Fantasy in its second week were close to 65,000, bringing the game to a total of 351,113 units sold so far. Dissidia 012 was the second best-selling game for the week of March 7th – 13th, being beaten out by the newly-released Dynasty Warriors 7, which pulled in impressive sales of 253,090 units.

For the sake of comparison, Samurai Warriors 3Z, an enhanced port of Samurai Warriors 3, sold 208,548 units in its first week when it debuted in February. If you combine the first week sales of the Samurai Warriors 3 enhanced versions on both Wii and PlayStation 3, it puts the game at 231,146 units.

Meanwhile, Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen made its debut lower down the chart at #4, and sold 24,344 units. There’s no way of knowing just how much the recent tragedies in Japan have affected sales of these titles, as well as of Nintendo 3DS hardware and software. Perhaps next week’s sales chart will give us a better idea of this.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition:

Something we did look up just for fun, however, were first week sales of the original Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for a quick comparison with the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, now that it’s been on shelves for a couple of weeks. Here’s a look:

Release Title Sys. First week End-of-year sales
Feb 2009 Street Fighter IV PS3 86,075 131,727
Feb 2009 Street Fighter IV 360 37,782 51,152
Apr 2010 Super Street Fighter IV PS3 80,882
Apr 2010 Super Street Fighter IV 360 28,454
Feb 2011 Super Street Fighter IV 3D 3DS 44,649 N/A

Total sales of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition are currently at 67,444 units, which isn’t bad at all, considering the game is a year (or two years, if you count the original) old at this point, and available on a wide range of platforms, including the iPhone.

I don’t know what to think about those Disgaea 4 sales. Are they good? They look good to me, for a niche title. Just under 100k is a great figure. But at the same time, I can’t help but think NIS were going for something a little higher than that…

On the other hand, the staying power of Pokémon is fantastic. Kudos to Nintendo and Game Freak for that. It definitely deserves it. :D

    • I think its good, considering that circulating figure said sales of the ENTIRE disgaea franchise was at 1.5mln worldwide, so 100K is already what is that half of the average number of units for a game, if divided evenly?

    • Ren

Yeah, it’s good. It’s the biggest Disgaea first week yet I think, from what others said. NIS probably would like bigger figures, but those were at worst decent.

      • malek86

Actually, Disgaea 2 started with a bit more than 100k.

  • PrinceHeir

good to see dissidia duodecim and dynasty warriors 7 doing great.

im actually surprised they were still people buying games there. i mean with the recent disaster and all. im just surprised that’s all.

hopefully japan get’s back on it’s feet sooner than later

    • nyobzoo

you have to remember that the game came out before the incident, not to mention the lower half of Japan barely even felt it

      • Testsubject909

And that games are a part of normalcy and a means of escapism.

And in disaster, what would you most wish to do?

    • The event occurred on the 10/11 and this goes from the 7th – 13th, I also imagine people in unaffected areas would still seek to please their entertainment needs. If circulating images are to be believed, some places got back repaired quite fast!

  • Disgaea 4 is on to the big One Quadruple-Four Oh, go baby go! I cant wait for NISA to start talking about it!

I think I will scale back my anticipation for how well Super Street Fighter Four will do in the US, I didnt know it was decreasing with each iteration. I wonder why Capcom decided to go with Street Fighter over say their other fighter.

  • joesz

What? I thought Dynasty Warriors 7 was delayed..

    • Testsubject909

Only for us in the western world as far as I know.

      • joesz

        Oh,I see.Thanks for telling me.

  • Aoshi00

I bought no. 3 & 4, but waiting for my 3DS to play Layton… Heard Kenshin Saisen’s pretty mediocre, kinda half expected that (can’t even save the game in the middle, guess you could just turn off the PSP), I like the cover art drawn by Watsuki though.. I know I sound like a broken record, I’m playing MvC3 right now, a classic title like RK deserves a fighter that looks and plays like that.. this is a missed opportunity for its 15th anniversary… I don’t want half baked games for the anime that I love.. but then that’s what most anime based games are..Not sure how the sales are affected by the catastrophe either, but if people are holed up in their homes, the gamers might as well have something to pass the time and take their minds off things.. 3DS might probably sell more if not for the earthquake/tsunami, but people are not in the mood for games or a new gadget now…

    • Zero_Destiny

Kenshin deserves so much better. Like a proper ending to the anime. Inuyasha got one. Where’ my Enishi arc. :(

      • Aoshi00

I think they might go back to the Jinchuu anime and give it a proper canon ending eventually, like Inuyasha or Saint Seiya (after 13 yrs, but too bad the seiyuu were replaced in Hades, which was the last thing the fans wanted..)

That’s why I bought the game anyway even though there’s a high chance it might not be good, just to show my support as a fan, and that they would animate the last arc (redo Flashback again in Watsuki style).. However, as a devoted fan, I don’t want a sucky game either.. It’s all the more ironic because the author Watsuki is a huge fighter fan himself.. I can’t imagine him being too pleased by a bad game.. Those 25,000 copies were all bought by fans anyway..

RK needs an exciting and fast paced 2D fighter in HD, a crossover w/ Busou Renkin would be a dream come true, both manga have a long list of unique fighters.. not a turkey on the PSP :(… That’s why I don’t really buy DB games anymore despite being a huge fan, I won’t surrender my dough to Bamco based on a license..

        • Zero_Destiny

I liked Busou Renkin too!!!! :D I do hope we get a proper ending because the manga ending is just so much better. :) And this is coming from a guy who liked the filler (I must be crazy right?lol). I atcually bought the manga starting right at where the anime ended. One of the first mangas I got. I was so desperate to see it end. I got all the volumes now though. Darn being a fan can hurt your wallet but I’m sure you know that. lol Well I hope the game is a pleasant surprise. Who knows I”ve stumbled on some games that I’ve thought would be bad and only heard bad things about and ended up liking them. Maybe that’s being too optimistic but can’t blame a guy for that. lol

          • Aoshi00

Nah, I liked some of the fillers too, especially the funny ones :) I read the manga first, the anime was pretty good.. I think Embalming might get animated first if the story gets far enough, but it’s on monthly now and only has 4 volumes.. the Frankenstein John Doe made a cameo in one of the Busou Renkin anime eps not sure if you noticed, when Okakura was playing a fighting game in the dorm :) I haven’t played the Busou Renkin PS2 game, but I want a BlazBlue style fighter or like MvC3, is that too much to ask for *.*?I was being optimistic and wanted to be surprised too, and I hope I would enjoy the game at least.. I heard only 3 chars are playable at first (that’s right, 3..), and it takes a while to unlock all of them… especially the secret ones Battousai and Shinsengumi Saitou.. but I’m not expecting much.. oh well, it’s been so long there’s something new for Kenshin, so what the hey… at least you could play as Enishi or something..

Oh, your old handle is back, I like it :)

          • Zero_Destiny

What? Saitou is one of the best charas. He was so awesome and [email protected] I always liked the filler arc with the Christian Missionaries and the Blind Swordsman. I thought it was fun. I started the series on Tonnami back when I was in Middle maybe High School. One of those. It’s been a while. lol It was just around there that I was “really” starting to get into anime and figure out that anime came from Japan. Before I just kind of thought of them as cool more action like cartoons. Silly me. It only took a show about a Samurai in Meji Japan for me to realize that anime came from Japan. Or that the medium is called anime for that matter. lol
EDIT: Yeah I beat Dragon Quest VI and have retired it back onto my shelf. It will now stay there for the rest of my life because I will never sell it. So with that I have returned a more complete man and felt that I had to change it back. lol

          • Aoshi00

lol.. I remember the fans all cringed back then when they first heard the English trailer and the announcer say the tacky title “Samurai X!!” :) and then Watsuki later called Shuusui’s weapon in Busou Renkin “Sword Samurai X” :)

I actually only own a couple of RK DVDs from Media Blasters and the 2 OVAs (I threw out all my fansub tapes).. they should re-release this on blu-ray for collection or something..

Nice, glad you enjoyed DQ so much :)

          • Zero_Destiny

@Aoshi00 lol I laughed at that too. I atcually think it was pretty cool. I remember Watsuki likes his American Super Hero comics so I thought it was only fitting to call it Samurai X. But the dub I watched called it Rurouni Kenshin even on Toonami it kept it’s right name. I think the Sony Pictures dub changed the name. Media-Blasters dub was pretty true to everything. A Blu-Ray up-scaling would be nice. It’ll give me an excuse to re-watch the whole series like Kai did with Dragon Ball Z. If those guys cringed at Samurai X I wonder what they thought of the Opening Theme that was song in English by Flonne’s (Sandy Fox) voice actress. lol I can see them rolling their eyes at it. :P I atcually like it though. And yeah I loved every minute of VI it’s one of my all time fav games so the playthrough again was fun and brought back good memories. I’m just happy to finally own an ENGLISH copy of it. The Super Famicom copy didn’t do me any good. It was just a decoration really. lol

          • Aoshi00

The Eng. song was on the DVD, I liked it, think it’s cute :). I couldn’t watch Kenshin in Eng. though, too used to the Jpn dub..DB Kai is a totally different beast though I’m sure you know, it’s re-edited in the original manga’s pace w/ all the fillers thrown out. They’re finishing Cell at ep 96-97 now (the original series was at 200 eps).. would be nice if they continue Kai w/ Buu. I would collect all blu-rays even though I bought the dragon sets and orange bricks.. Come to think of it, I’ve been watching Kai every Sunday for 2 yrs now, how time flies, crazy…

          • Zero_Destiny

@Aoshi00 Yeah I know all action no filler or padding. That’s what Kai is all about. Wow Finish Cell at 97 that’s amazing. I only starting to watch Kai last summer when Funimation put the show on TV. Reminded me how much I loved it. I have two of Blu-Rays. There so nice. The up-scaling was very well done. I sadly don’t have the original on DVD. I’m atcually hard-press about getting it. I should just stick with Kai but the original with all the English actors I grew-up on and all the screaming that I loved. I have a hard time saying no to it. But my wallet says other-wise. I’m really impressed at how fast it goes though. They got to the fight with Vegeta so fast. I was amazed. Good stuff. I’m always a fan of Akira Toriyama I do love my Dragon Quest after all, And Dr.Slump is so funny and cute. :)

          Watsuki VS. Arc System Works!

Kenshin can fight Busou Renkin in Jump! Ultimate Stars.

This Kenshin PSP game plays too slow (unless you overclock your PSP using CFW)

          • Aoshi00

Yea, but weren’t Kenshin and Kazuki assist chars or something? I got both Super Stars & Ultimate Stars but it’s been too long.. I don’t want cameo, I want a real BlazBlue or MvC-esque fighter on console..

          • Guest

No they werent they were fully playable

          • Aoshi00

You’re right, I remember using Kazuki’s special moves or Kenshin’s Kuzuryuusen or something, like I said it’s been too long since I played those games. I think Tokiko was the assist? Anyway, we need a console 2D Kenshin/Busou Renkin fighter to do Watsuki proud.

        • Did you bought Saisen, Aoshi?

          • Aoshi00

Yea, Amiami shipped Saisen to me last week, it’s on its way… From what I heard, it plays pretty slow and is kinda for fans only, so I’m keeping my expectation low… I guess I would just need to use my imagination when I’m play MvC3 or BlazBlue and fantasize about a Kenshin game like them :(.. Shishigami Bang’s abs look kind of like Sano’s lol..

I was re-reading Busou Kenshin last night… it would make such an amazing 2D fighter, come on, Kazuki’s Sunlight Heart, Tokiko’s Valkyrie Skirt, Captain Bravo’s Silver Skin, Papillon, Victor, both the human and animal type Homunculi (Kawazui, Washio, Kinjou, etc), it’d be pandemonium!

I got Layton too (and the 3DS screen protector and pouch), but just waiting for the system to play it, got the Aqua one…

          • I see I see. I feel sorry for him too. It’s kind of sad seeing him getting a mediocre game after all these years. I read some stuff on gamefaqs and by far this is probably the best Kenshin game, although that’s not saying much. I played the PS1 fighter when I was young, and I was sorely disappointed

          • Aoshi00

Yea, the early 3D fighters weren’t so great (and the PS1 RPG was a sidestory which I haven’t played), especially w/ the low polygon count.. I hope I would still enjoy this (again as a fan).. It’s all the more disappointing when you see games like BlazBlue/MvC3/Muramasa.. that the graphics is there, just that no one wants to make a good 2D Kenshin fighter..

          • I think if you don’t expect too much out of it, it would probably be enjoyable :D Probably companies think that Kenshin is not profitable as a franchise anymore. (Looking at the sales figures.. ouch)

  • Testsubject909

Gooo Dynasty Warriors! Man, just a little bit longer before I can get a good feel at the game, the tweaks they’ve done and see how online co-op chronicles mode works out.

And check see if I’m still good at stun-locking, juggling, guerilla warfare and musou combo-break to work my way around tougher opponents…

  • malek86

Disgaea 4 will probably settle at 125k or so. Not bad overall, but makes you wonder if NIS shouldn’t try to expand their market a bit.

By the way, has MHP3 surpassed DQ9 yet? It sure looks like it.

    • HarryHodd

Not sure what Disgaea 3 did but 4 will sell good overseas.

      • i hope Disgaea 4 sells at least 400k worldwide. thats their target for the year.

        • HarryHodd

We better start the hype train soon then.

  • pokemon beasted those total sales numbers.

  • alundra311

Nice to see Professor Layton still on the number 3 spot.

  • Glad DW7 is hitting the big sales so soon. This could be the hope of the series Koei is looking for.

  • Pretty impressive showing for Dynasty Warriors 7 and glad to see Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle still hanging strong.
