By Ishaan . March 30, 2011 . 4:39pm

Period: The week of March 21st – March 27th (2011)

Top-seller: Dynasty Warriors 7 – 67,475 | Total Sales: 320,565

Nintendo 3DS sales: 50,710 | Total sales: 792,954

The biggest release in Japan during the week of March 21st – 27th was Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection, following shortly after the release of Dissidia 012. Square Enix’s packaging of their PSP Final Fantasy IV remake and its After Years sequel convinced 104,173 people to pick it up in its first week.

The next new release on the list was a Gundam game for the Nintendo 3DS, far below Final Fantasy IV’s numbers at the #3 position. Finally, the last notable release of the week was ClaDun 2, which sold 5,956 copies.

We also see the slight rise of games with long tails, such as Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, Pokémon Black/White, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Wii Party, Mario Kart Wii and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, all of which saw an increase in sales over the past week.

Ouch on ClaDun 2. Something similar happened with Gust’s recent Violet remake.

I actually didn’t realize it was coming out so soon.

PSP is flooded with RPGs and monster hunter. The little guys aren’t doing do well because of it. Seems like PS3 is a more favorable place for smaller niche RPGs right now.

      • Belenger

Except that small Niche RPG makers arent even taking the ps3 on consideration, take a note on newest Vanillaware game “Grand Knight History” to be on PSP.

        • HarryHodd

I know. Marvelous is probably the worst offender of underestimating the PS3 base in Japan. Didn’t they just cancel
a PS360 rpg? Seemed like Rune Factory Oceans did decently on PS3. But yet they are still doing Wii exclusives.

And then they wonder why they are such a bad financial state.

          • HarryHodd

Right were as Idea Factory and Gust seem to be doing pretty well.

Do you really think selling on the PS3 will make a difference though? Couldn’t it lead to less sales then what they get on the PSP?

          • HarryHodd

Yes the PS3 is starved jrpgs. 5000 sales is absolutely terrible and I’m sure if they made the same game on the PS3 it would sell better. Better yet stop making these types of PSP games and produce a Makia Wars sequel on PS3 instead.

Hopefully the sales will pick up, I loved the first Cladun.

    • malek86

How much did Cladun 1 sell anyway?

  • Tom_Phoenix

Waw, the figures for Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection are actually quite terrible. The DS version sold three times as much during its first week. Obviously, the recent events in Japan probably took their toll and it doesn’t help that the PSP install base is smaller compared to the DS one, but still…I am not sure if that alone can account for such a dramatic drop.

I guess it is possible that people are just tired of IV remakes, especially considering there have been a fair few. We will just have to wait and see if the title has any legs. One thing is certain, though…I SERIOUSLY hope the poor sales aren’t a result of the remake being bad, beacuse I was very much looking forward to it. I nervously await the reviews…

But anyway, looking at this sales chart is quite sad. Aside from FF, everything else sold at below 50k levels. The video game market in Japan is in really tough shape right now. Not suprised at all at Gundam The 3D Battle’s poor commercial performance, though. It already seemed like a preety lackluster title from screenshots and trailers, although Namdai did promise a lot of content for it (but I guess that wasn’t the case or at least there wasn’t enough of it to make a difference).

    • Yukito

As you said, FF4 has been remade one too many times. I believe people are tired of it. They don’t really do anything new to the game but one or two things, and always put it out like they accomplished making a whole new game. It is to the point, if I wanted to play it, I could go to my DS, SNES, PS1, or PC to play it. It is sort of out of hand in the amount of options you have to play it. They should give other old games a chance for light.

      • doomspeller10

Agreed. Since this is the Complete Version, let’s hope it’s also the Final Version. FFVI needs some love too.

Also remember that people are still recovering from the earthquake so playing video games is perhaps the furthest from some people’s minds right now.

  • cmurph666

I’m going to buy this because its been about 10 years since I last played it.

Ikenie no Yoru didn’t even make it to the top 20.

  • Maxwell3000

The list of PSP rpgs I want is growing pretty large. YS 7, Felghana, P3P, Legend of Heroes and now this.
