Lost Wonder Boy Game Monster World IV Leaves Japan, Arrives On PS3 & Xbox 360

image When the Sega Genesis was in its heyday, the Wonder Boy series was at its peak of popularity. Sega picked up and localized most of the Monster World games as Wonder Boy titles… except for Monster World IV. That game, which starred a female warrior named Arsha, remained in Japan.

Surprise! Monster World IV is heading overseas. The ESRB rated the Genesis classic as a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for North America.

This is an action-platformer in which players guide a ‘cartoony’ girl through side-scrolling levels to save her world from evil spirits. As players run and jump through each level, they use a sword to defeat whimsical creatures (e.g., mummies, walking mushrooms, slime blobs) and larger bosses (e.g., a caterpillar woman, a winged man). Enemies blink when hit, and quickly disappear when defeated.

That sounds like the game I remember, but Monster World IV was never localized. Is Sega going to release a digital import on PlayStation Network and Xbox 360 with Japanese text? While somewhat common on Wii’s Virtual Console, this would be a first for Xbox Live Arcade. Hmm… on second thought I wonder if Sega translated the game or if this could be a remake of Monster World IV.

Oh, wow, actual old school goodness I never played being released? Very, very tempting.

  • Sold! Now, all I need is a PSP for this. :3

I’ve been playing the Fan-Translated version as of late, but i’m so glad that this is getting an official release.
I just pray that it’s in english.

  • Excellent news, now Sega are starting to release something different from their 16-bit days.

  • Great!!!!

  • This just made my day

I will be happy if it’s a re-release of the original and not a rehashed “update”.

Or that it offers both options to players.

    Cool news!

Although I would be more pleased if they bundled all Wonder Boy games together and released them as a pack on XBLA/PSN. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap is still one of the best games ever made.

  • A very nice and unexpected move from SEGA. Maybe they’ll put all of the other Wonder Boy games on PSN/XBLA as well. I would certainly welcome that.

    • #WishfulThinking, but I hope this would lead to a US release of the 1st 4 #SakuraTaisen games, if this move is successful.

      • Considering the US sales of Sakura Taisen V, I highly doubt we’ll be seeing anymore.

        • It doesn’t help the fact that the #SakuraTaisen everybody longs for was the 1st game, which Bernie Stolar more than happily denied us with. >.>

  • Isn’t this game going to be near impossible to complete if it isn’t in English?

Also, whatever happened to West One? Can’t find any info on when they ceased to be or if they renamed themselves.

Awesome classic! Used to play it back in the day, and i still play it now and then.
Yeah i am that old, lol.
Without japanese language skills its pretty hard to complete since there are a lot of text based “open the next door puzzles”. Go get it anyway since its a fookin underrated gem! Make a sequel SEGA :D
