Pandora’s Tower: Until I Return To Your Side Could Be Nintendo’s Wii Action Epic

By Spencer . April 5, 2011 . 6:58pm

The first glimpse we got of Pandora’s Tower: Until I Return to Your Side was a picture of a tattooed girl’s back. Nintendo announced a spring release for Japan and didn’t say anything about it for months.

Out of the blue, Nintendo releases a dramatic trailer on Japan’s Nintendo channel with a girl crying and a warrior attacking monsters with a scythe-whip.

That was… quite a surprise! Something else unexpected is One Piece: Unlimited Cruise developer Ganbarion is behind Pandora’s Tower: Until I Return to Your Side. The Wii game is slated for release on May 26 in Japan.

Update: For more details about the crying girl and why a soldier is fighting beasts within the tower read this post.

  • That weapon makes me think God of War.

    • Guest

      He is Kratos friend

  • Aiddon

call me cautiously optimistic. I wasn’t expecting an action game, but I do like the art direction. Ganbarion is a talented developer, but their 3D track record is lukewarm at best since their 3D One Piece games are HORRIBLY repetitive. This is also their first title that isn’t licensed, so maybe they can get a chance to flex some creative muscles they couldn’t beforehand.

  • Well I will start by saying its an interesting concept and i would love story details but the graphical direction has turned me away from it, it just those bland textures during the cutscenes that is just, well odd to look at.

    • GamerKT

      Graphics whore.

  • joesz

This is game somehow related to that trailer that had mother Riku in it?

Or was it called black Sting or something…

    • Guest

Nope. This is the first footage ever released for this game.

    • Ah! You’re talking about the NGP montage, that had Giant Sting-Black Sting-Something Sting in it. It does look similar, does it?

  • Guest

Love scythes. It’s not a weapon used enough in games I’m interested in. I think it looks great from this small glimpse. I’m really excited.

  • Zero_Destiny

I like it. Reminds me of Castlevania except you’re climbing Pandora’s Tower. Hehehehehe Climb a tower, kill some baddies, rescue hot girl. I’m in for it. I love the singing in the video. I think the game will have a nice atmosphere.

  • Yesshua

You know what’s really interesting about this? It’s not so much anything about the trailer in particular, it’s who it’s coming from. It doesn’t look like something we’d see Nintendo publishing. I mean, an action game with voices, anime styled character models, and blood? I looks like with Xenoblade, Fatal Frame IV, The Last Story, and now Panora’s Tower, Nintendo is really trying to break out of their mold this generation.

It’s also interesting to see who Nintendo partnered with. Not a big name developer, but a developer with a solid track record of licensed titles.

I would be excited for this, but since none of the previous titles I mentioned made it to the US yet, I find myself without much hope for this one either.

    • well with Xenoblade being announced for Europe, I have some hope that some of those titles, namely Xenoblade and The Last Story, will make it over to the US too.

  • Franz Liszt’s Liebestraum No. 3 vocalized?! Beautiful, and almost tear jerking. I really do hope this game’s story is going to be as deep as it’s choice in music.

Seriously. This game better live up to Liszt.

    • puchinri

Was that what it was? it was very beautiful. (It made me think Spirited Away, but I am ashamed for not recognizing it as a classical piece).

      And word to that.

      • Oh, don’t be ashamed. I’m not much of a classical music listener, I just know this one song and a handful of others. I thought it was a remix or something at first, but it became more apparent as it went on.

I hope I didn’t come off as some kind of music elitist. I just like this one song, and I happen to know that it means “Love Dream”. So it probably means something to this game.

        • puchinri

Oh, okay. Haha, I would have pinned you for one. I am myself, so when Catherine trailers were flaunting the music, I was getting excited and trying to see how much I could recognize.

And not at all! I think it’s cool that you recognized the song, love it and expect justice done to its amazingness. And that is interesting, I did not know that. I hope to see that meaning/relation present in the game. I remember very little of Liszt from my music class, but now I want to go give his music, and this song especially, a listen.

    • Aoshi00

Nice :) I hope the story is as dark as Nier, the atmosphere feels like Ico too… having Classical rearrangement is just another plus. 5.26, game is just 2 months away, so sudden! Hopefully the gameplay lives up to its aesthetics..

  • No. You will never return to my side! MWAHAHAHAHA!

  • Suicunesol

    It has pretty music.

The way it’s being advertised in this trailer gives it a “Last Story” feeling. Unfortunately, it seems like a really typical Japanese action game to me. I don’t think it’s going to sell well. :/

  • Aren’t “epic” and “wii” antonyms of each other?

    • puchinri

Not at all. But if your dictionary is telling you that, it’s probably a bad edition that you should consider replacing. (Antonyms for epic should be things like fanboys, trolls and n00bs. Unless under epic fail. Synonyms should have things like Atlus, Shadow of Colossus, etc under it.)

I actually don’t even like epic used to describe anything but an epic tale (the more classic use of the word). But I also thought that was kind of reference here as much as epic in its modern use is.

  • HarryHodd

I’ll be interested if it’s an action RPG. Otherwise not sure.

  • PrinceHeir

i actually though this was from Monolith Soft. cant’ wait to see more of this.

oh and nintendo, what’s monolith’s next game?

    • gatotsu911

      Baten Kaitos 3D… I hope.

      • Zero_Destiny

        Please God yes XD

  • IceRomancer

Wow I’m kinda surprised! That looks really awesome. The battle system seems cool, and the characters look neat, the music is beautiful… Nintendo! Did you just get me excited for a game!? You did didn’t you! You big tease you!

  • Side scroller, huh? This piques my interest, I’ll bite.

  • the girl looks like an albino lizard and i cant belive how much the music is being bummed lol

  • I know people hate ‘graphics-whores’ like myself, but that game looks ugly as sin.

  • With Ganbarion as the developer, this game is elevated to MUST-BUY status.

  • Last story and xenoblade not even come yet, and then this … this too much for my wii

  • gatotsu911

I’m genuinely surprised to hear that Monolith Soft is behind this game, although it did seem strange that they would be bringing out another console title so soon after their last one.

Somehow I have a sneaking suspicion we won’t be seeing this in the US…

Will this be yeat another 1st party Nintendo release that will never leave Japan? Stay tuned….
