Final Fantasy XIV May Get A "Materia System" For Crafters

By Spencer . April 13, 2011 . 2:31pm

Final Fantasy XIV May Get A "Materia System" For Crafters Naoki Yoshida, Producer on Final Fantasy XIV, has a couple of ideas on how to make crafting better. The first problem Yoshida wants to address the Disciples of the Hand by balancing rank requirements, materials, and the number of recipes.

An idea further down the road is a big change to all of the Disciples in Final Fantasy XIV. The developers are working on a Materia system, which will allow the Disciples of the Hand to fuse materia to weapons and armor. They’ll need help from Disciples of the Land to retrieve catalyst items from the field. Finally, Disciples of War and Magic and use the materia fused gear to enhance their abilities on the battlefield.

Before either of those tweaks come into play, Square Enix will make a major adjustment to the party system. The next Final Fantasy XIV patch puts a cap on the maximum party size. You can have up to 8 members in a "full party." Groups with 4 to 7 members are "light parties." Each of group will have different status enhancements, which Yoshida has not announced at this time.

Update 1.17 comes out tomorrow, so if you want to explore Eorzea in a giant party today is your last day to do it.

I keep forgetting this game came out.

    • Draparde

It’s not out untill the PS3 version to me XD …not like i could play PC version even if i wanted too though lol

sounds like a diffrent spin on the augment system of FFXI. i wonder if it will be a fusion that can be undone. (like materia from a certain other FF) or if the armor/weapon can only be materia’ed once.

I can’t really see whether it has something to do with the FF7 materia or if it just shares the name, the description sounds a bit general. Either way, it looks like they’re trying to appeal the fans with the name… I wonder how many innocents will fall just for the name and buy this *cough* game.

Looks like they have a lot planned, theyre adding a job system, changing the battle system, putting in auto attack, jump, dungeon raids. Playability wise the game is now in the state it should have been at Alpha stage. There is pretty much 0 content, and you never really have any clear objectives or anything fun/different to do, zones dont have anything to do or look at. Quests are boring and only offer you crap you can buy anywhere. If they can fix that, and make the game more fluid than the clunky, clumsy nightmare it currently is, i think they may actually salvage this to just about break even on their profits. If they’re lucky. ; ; They decided to not remove the system where all your equipment breaks every few hours, since theyre adding this materia system. It pretty much means you have to level 2-3 crafts, have insane amounts of cash, a bucketload of materials and/or someone at hand every waking moment for all your repair needs lol. You wouldnt mind if the players werent so damn stoic and unfriendly.

Theyve lost most of their PC users and i dont think they will get many of them back, all they have to rely on is the PS3 users who cant play PC version, or the people who dont have gamer friends or read reviews in any shape or form. This game has pretty much become the biggest joke of the current gaming world now, very sad. It’s such a beauty to look at. The dude who oversaw it had never played an MMO before and didnt wanna listen to anyone, i just wanna shake them and tell them what they need to do lol.

Are there still enough people playing to put together a party of 8?

Poor, predictable Square Enix. When all else fails, throw in something from Final Fantasy 7 to sucker people into thinking it’s good.

I clicked on this to say the exact same thing.

I couldn’t care less about MMOs. That being said, I do wish that people would be a little less harsh on these guys. They’re trying. They’re actually trying to change it. It looks like they’re practically doing it from scratch. I’d give them some props.

I just don’t like the amount of abuse these guys are getting, regardless of if they’re trying to draw people in with “Materia.” That could just be a general term. Heck, Materia in FFVII could’ve been called Magicite, since FFVI was pretty much the start of that sort of thing.

    no sqex news tag?

  • PrinceHeir

so did they remove the limit on how many hours you can play?

    • ZeroNova

There has never been any limit on how much you can play. There is something called the “fatigue system” though, and it basically means that if you gain enough experience points in a short amount of time, you will start to gradually get less and less exp, until you don’t get any at all.

I’ts really not as bad as it sounds though, I’ve never reached the fatigue limit for exp. By the way, the fatigue system also applies to SP (Skill Points), which is what ‘levels up’ your class rank, and not your physical level. I’ve reached the fatigue limit for SP once, and when I logged in the next day it was back to normal.

It’s basically there to make it impossible to level up too fast, and possibly to prevent exploits.

      • PrinceHeir

yeah i was referring to that. ehhh im not big on MMO’s so i will not play this ^^

        • ZeroNova

I see. Well the fatigue system is still there as far as I know. I haven’t played much FFXIV lately though, but I log in every now and then. Fortunately there haven’t been any monthly fees at all yet :p

          • PrinceHeir

yeah that’s what i heard. lucky eh? :D

they should make it a free MMO and just pay the game, after that it’s free forever ^^

It might be nifty if you can actually see the Materia on the weapon, not just in the stats or a generic glow effect.
