The Weapons Final Fantasy Type-0′s Two Stars Wield

By Spencer . April 18, 2011 . 1:03am

The Weapons Final Fantasy Type 0s Two Stars WieldV-Jump has a little preview on Final Fantasy Type-0 where they reveal the full names of the two lead characters Machina and Rem. Or perhaps I should say Machina Kunagiri and Rem Tokimiya. Those are their full names.

Machina, according to V-Jump reports, wields a Volt Rapier, which is a drill-like sword. Rem fights using daggers in both hands. That doesn’t surprise us since screenshots released earlier revealed that already tidbit.

Cid Oldstein sparks an all out war when he breaks a treaty signed between the four nations. His goal is to acquire all four of the crystals in the world. Machina, Rem, and other students in the Suzuku magic academy set out to defend their crystal. While Final Fantasy Type-0 has a ton of playable characters, Machina and Rem are said to be the main protagonists in the PSP game.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is due in stores this summer in Japan.

Another Cid bad guy? Wow, the tables have really turned on that old tradition. :D

The dual daggers sound interesting, but I’m really more excited for the “drill-like” sword. I wonder how they plan to make it work? Charge for drill attacks, combos for normal swordplay? Or something new and unique?

    • Exkaiser

Oh, I’m sure there’s a SRW original mech that already has it figured out for you.

    • Joanna

Maybe that’s what they want you to think but in reality Cid is on the side of good and the poor students are being deceived by the evil school and the truth comes at the end of UMD 1. :D

  • joesz

    Noooooooooo!

I thought “Ace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” was the man protagonist.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aunna-Terrell/100001267508146 Aunna Terrell

It was always speculated that Machina and Rem were the protagonists while Ace/Queen/rest of card suits are classmates and playable in the multi-player.

      • Ren

All characters are playable through single player, actually, they even mentioned real time character switching and how you’ll need specific characters to deal with specific situations. I think Ace is just the leader of class 0 or something with similar importance and Rem and Machina are the characters through which the story unfolds from. Kinda like FF6.

        • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

          How is FF6 like that?

          • Joanna

I think he meant to say FFXII ;)

Cheekiness aside, I’ve always felt that plot-wise Terra and Celes were the most important characters and they are also the two characters that feel like they were the main protagonist (Terra for WoB and Celes for WoR).

    • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

I heard the others were more the heroes (in terms of their actions) while Rem and Machina are the chroniclers.

  • heartless141

square enix and their cool names :P

    cant wait for this game!!

waiting for the annoucement for the jp release!

  • http://twitter.com/IXRoxasXI Rei Fal’Cie Sanchez

So it’s not Ace and Queen then…

  • PurpleDoom

The world’s four crystals? That sounds awfully familiar.

This game has been looking great so far, can’t wait to pick it up when it comes out.

    • rrw

its kinda standard FF element. nothing special

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

Yeah, but to be fair to Purple, It’s been MIA in 10, 12 and 13 (Can’t speak for 11 and 14 cause I haven’t played either). If you count 6, 7, and 8, then that’s at least 6 games without Crystals.

        • kupomogli

Final Fantasy 2 also didn’t have crystals. So atleast half the main series has no crystals.

          • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

There are four elemental crystal orbs at the top of the Tower of Mysidia, though.

        • Exkaiser

11 had a whoooooole ton of crystals.

Hell, they even used crystals as lightbulbs.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

But the Crystals weren’t important. It’s like Boco; There are chocobos in practically every FF, but Boco’s one of the only ones with any significant Plot participation.

          • Exkaiser

I’m sure there were some of importance.

            It’s a pretty big game.

      • raymk

What is special that’s new nowadays?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Walter-Pacora/595428700 Walter Pacora

Type 0 is also part of the Novula Crystallis, wich mean they are linked (FF13, FFVersus13, Agito(Type0) ) by the legend of the crystals.

    • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

Also, 1/3/4/5′s four crystals were Water/Wind/Earth/Fire. These are Suzaku/Genbu/Byakko/Seiryu.

Hope this Cid looks like Cid Raines from FFXIII, he looked awesome as ever!

    • RablaAndrews

This Cid looks like Hitler from what I can tell from one of the trailers

      • http://flailthroughs.blogspot.com Flailthroughs

I think I’ll call him Cidler.

        • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

          That’s actually a cool nickname.

      change your avatar back

      • Ren

To what? Naruto and Sasuke bathing together?

        • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Oh yeah that was another favorite!!! I was in the mood for Naruto since Im rewatching Shippuden where Naruto said he and Sasuke have a “special” bond ^_^!!!

            STOP

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Square Enix is slowly giving us more and more info on this game. Is it safe to expect a full blown reveal at this year’s E3?

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Theres been no English information on the game at all, so it is perhaps a guarantee that they will have goods to share at E3.

    • Kaoro

Probably, complete with a vague and disappointingly distant release date.

… hopefully Versus makes an appearance too :)

      • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

It’s going to be released in summer. Therefore, the most distant it can be is August. Unless you mean the English version?

        • Kaoro

Bleh, August. Wish publishers would release more in June/July. Either way I meant a NA English release date.

          • Joanna

hm, even then I doubt it will be to far off with the NGP coming soon. If the DS and PS2 and other consoles have proven anything, it’s that publishers tend to hate releasing stuff after a successor is on the market, so I’m going to bet on it that SE will be probably doing what they can to get Type-0 out the door before the end of 2011. And being a big company, I don’t see how it would be impossible for them. They even got FFXIII out around the same time and that had much more work needed for a localized version.

          • Kaoro

Yeah, but what worries me about that are 1) SE seems to like huge gaps between announcements and release and 2) I don’t think releasing during the end of 2011 would be wise. A PSP RPG would be smothered in the crowded holiday season.

Unless they are simply going to make an enhanced-for-NGP-port and skip a PSP release altogether in the West.

But I really hope it does come sooner rather than later.

          • Joanna

Actually, that’s not really true, the gap between announcements, I mean. Certain titles do have big gaps (3rd Birthday I think had a fairly large gap or maybe I’m just thinking of the gap between announcing it was in production and release…since this one in particular feels like it’s been around forever before getting released in North America), but there are others like FFIV: Complete Collection, which didn’t have a big gap at all. I’m sure there are other better examples, it’s just these are most recent and readily come to mind. But even if SE did have a large gap between announcements and releases for every title, these particular circumstances could make them release this particular game quicker.

There is still a bit of wiggle room since we don’t know when exactly the NGP will be hitting the North American market…it seems like most markets are getting it in 2012….the question is now, who is getting it 2011 (if anyone is)? Japan seems to be the best guess since Sony Japan rebutted those remarks of the device being delayed and PSP has had the most success in Japan. So if that does turn out to be true, SE does have some wiggle room right after the holiday season in January and February.

Well, don’t mind me, that’s just my hope that we get this game sooner and if not, at least later for sure. :)

Well this picture has been floating around for awhile now.
http://img713.imageshack.us/i/fft0machinarem.jpg/ be l should have thought more of it. :P.

  • Bruce

*sigh* Square-enix still has that crystal fetish . Other than that , the game looks great ! .

    • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

It’s Final Fantasy. There’s been a crystal or something like one in every game. Expect this, don’t complain about it.

    • Joanna

I don’t know. I find it endearing that there are a few elements that appear in every or most FFs. It’s like an inside joke, except not a joke. A lot of franchises have this to a certain extent, like Slime is in every DQ game (as far as I can recall) and the main games have the special puff puff massages. Or Breath of Fire’s Ryu and Nina. Or Suikoden’s 108 Stars of Destiny. I could go on, most RPGs do this in some way. It’s a sort of homage to the franchise and little easter eggs for the fans. I personally love it when there is some sort of element, be it gameplay or plot, that is present in every game (or most games). I like discovering how it is used in the newest game…and what’s different. :)

  • IceRomancer

Definitely my most anticipated psp game ever! Im really rooting for squenix on this one! Please don’t let me down :(

Oh and machina and rem have thee best weapons ever on IMO :)

  • Christian Wright

    cool names bro.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1592056013 Shao Cong Lim

And here I thought the main character was gonna be the guy using the cards or summons, cause the concept was unique, this is a bit disappointing…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Noir-Belladoix-DeCheario/100002249968107 Noir-Belladoix DeCheario

Strange, because here it says ” There are two other playable characters in addition to the members of Class Zero, which are said to act as outside observers of the game’s events. “-Machina and Rem (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Type-0)
…so are they the protagonists or not? Perhaps it’s something similar to Final Fantasy VIII( you know, the whole Squall then Laguna dream sequence, I’ am just speculating :)).

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Lee/518924335 Tommy Lee

Hmmm… The problem with that part of the FF wikia entry about this game is that they don’t have a source to back up that sentence. You should really take that warning at the top of the page to heart when you see something like that.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Noir-Belladoix-DeCheario/100002249968107 Noir-Belladoix DeCheario

Your right, I was careless, but then again just curious lol ;)

  • vrakanox

Great news for me. I always thought Machina had the best character design.

  • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

So who is the real main character? Is it Machina and Rem or Ace?

  • http://noybusiness.livejournal.com/ Noybusiness

So is TV Tropes right that their names come from “Deus ex Machina” and “Rem acū tangō”?

  • Joanna

About the main character speculation, personally this is what I think: Machina or Rem act as your avatar (choice of gender) and you follow along on the story where Ace is the main centre of attention. Now SE could go two ways here. Either they go the White Knight Chronicles way where your avatar has no relevance to the story and sort of tags along or they are part of the story either by being actual students or part of another group that meets up with Ace and decides to follow him. The difference here is that your avatar has spoken lines and some sort of plot relevance in the second case, but in the first they don’t.
