The Last Guardian Won’t Fly This Year

By Ishaan . April 19, 2011 . 11:48pm

Spiritual successor to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus on PlayStation 2, The Last Guardian has been delayed from its planned holiday 2011 release on the PlayStation 3.  Additionally, the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection for the PlayStation 3 has also been delayed from its spring 2011 release.

The game’s designer, Fumito Ueda, says that this was done to “provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations.”

New release timeframes haven’t been announced yet, but Ueda says his team is working at a fast pace to get the games out quickly while retaining their quality.

  • Just flipped my table. Now I’ve got a mess to deal with.

I just punched the ground and the Earth literally cracked in two. Good thing that with the gravitational pull from the planet’s rotation, it immediately bonded back together.

        • Sounds like he schooled Kirby.

    Phase Pom.

I was actually looking forward for re-release of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Well, at least this information answer my curiosity of why gamestop did not have Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection on up coming release list.

  • My sadness hurts.

  • holyPaladin

My sister can’t be this sad!

    • MiniTaurus

The sister just made an account for crying out loud here TT.TT

And thus another year of failed expectations thanks to sony, now only 3 months away to confirm that another year we wont have Shenmue 3, ZOE 3, nor a beatmania/popn/GF-DM on console again.

      Or a Gamera game

While I’m certainly disappointed, with all the half assed rushed to deadline games it’s felt like I’ve played in the last two years, I’m glad this game won’t befall such fate. The wait will be worth it.

Baby giant griffons for everyone in 2012!

  • M’iau M’iaut

This shouldn’t be uber shocking given that there’s basically been nothing new since the initial announcement. This and the new Bioshock have always screamed 2012 or even 2013. Final thank yous to the most loyal gamers while all the hype starts to build around the amazements of the ‘next gen’ systems.

  • puchinri

As long as they’re still quality products, I am happy~.
And I just got Shadow of Colossus anyway, so I’m fine with having time to dive into it on PS2 before experiencing it on the PS3 (I just wish I could have gotten Ico too.)

But the more I look at the protag, the more I wish it was a girl. I’ll just pretend, I suppose. And enjoy the inevitable genderswap art.

T_T I figured it was all pushed back a month or two ago when amazon changed their listing for the Ico and Coleuses re-release. It’s now on Dec. 31. *sigh* So yeah as of now it’s in indefinably “We Don’t Know when it’ll Come Out” land. Here I was all hyped to finally play Ico after all these years. Oh well I guess I’m willing to wait a little longer. Gives me time to recover my bank account. lol

  • badmoogle

Unfortunately i was expecting this…but i still have patience.I’m sure this game will be worth the wait.

  • heartless141

just hope ICO and SotC come asap :D they have no reason to delay that apart from strategic hype for Last Guardian.

  • Can’t wait for the next console generation. It will take longer to develop a game than the actual console generation lasts.

  • First party studio obligations? Well I guess we know one thing that wont be at this years Sony E3 presentation (June 6 5pm pacific)…

    • I think we could still get a trailer, right?

    • I would think it being released in 2012 would make it more likely to get hyped up at their presentation. Like the attention given to God of War when that had a March release. Or Twisted Metal, which was made a big deal of when it was still over a year away.

      • I guess you are right, I just think it would have more of an impact at E3 2012 versus being at this years taking up a spot for a surprise game announcement/reveal or games coming in 2013.

  • To be honest I can wait! There’re plenty of games I’m playing and planning to buy more so TLG can wait a lot. And with more time they can make a much better game too.

  • unhappy

  • Concerning, Last Guardian…You know what? Good. Let them take however they want to give us a quality product. After playing Shadow of the Colossus, I don’t think there’s a game I am more excited about. My expectations are so incredibly high for it. You can’t make SOTC and then make a game that’s only “good.” I expect my mind to be blown after playing Last Guardian, and if they have to delay it for another six months to do so, so be it. Take your time. Make your art. I will wait.

As for the collection, I’m a bit bummed because I REALLY want it, but I can understand, from a sales perspective, releasing it closer to the release of Last Guardian.

    • irzbos

The collection will also come with a demo for TLG (I believe), so they probably also do not have that prepared yet. Maybe they do, but that could also be part of the delay (Not quite sure how difficult it would be to make a demo for it…prolly not that difficult at this stage in production). Regardless I too want the collection.

    • YsyDoesIt

I am bummed about the collection getting delayed. While I’m still occupied with Pokemon, I’ve been staving off the desire to re-conquer SotC since the release was leaked.

  • YsyDoesIt

I am perfectly okay with this being pushed back. One, I was expecting a delay after how long it took Shadow of the Colossus to finally release. Two, this holiday season is already beyond stuffed with AAA releases due out (and it gives me more dedicated Skyrim and Zelda time). Three, the longer it takes, the better the polish.
