Period: The week of April 18th – April 24th (2011)

Top-seller: Battle & Get! Pokémon Typing DS – 59,363

Nintendo 3DS sales: 23,038 | Total sales: 920,133

Two months since launch, and the Nintendo 3DS is still under a million units sold in Japan. Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, recently addressed the system’s cooling sales at a company investor briefing, citing the challenges associated with conveying the immediate appeal of the device and its features. The rest of the year should be interesting to watch as more and more high-profile 3DS software is released to draw attention to the system.

As far as software sales go, the week of April 18th – 24th saw the debut of Battle & Get! Pokémon Typing DS. As reported previously, the game comes with a wireless mini-keyboard that can be used with other bluetooth-compatible devices such as iPhones.

The same week, Spike released Gachitora: The Roughneck Teacher in High School. A spin-off of sorts if Spike’s Kenka Bancho series, Gachitora debuted at a fraction of the sales of Kenka Bancho 4, which moved 71,504 copies in its first week.

isnt Otomedius Excellent an xbox 360 game?

  • malek86

    Oh man, this is priceless.

Reggie, June 2010: “the 3DS is gonna have the greatest launch line-up of any console ever released!”

Iwata, April 2011: “consumers are still on the fence about the 3DS because they are unable to find compelling software”

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

In Reggie’s defense, though, plans to hold back games like Ocarina and Star Fox probably hadn’t been cemented by then. He had every reason to assume those would sell the system. :p

      • Guest

are those even new games though. I know Ocarina isnt

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

There’ve been plenty of new games announced, so if you’re trying to look smart by being snarky, it isn’t working.

          • Yamaneko22

Are you getting some extra money from Nintendo? Just asking >_>

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

No, we just don’t like it when people try to be snarky or misinformative. It isn’t productive, adds nothing discussion-worthy, is annoying, and a waste of space.

      • malek86

I would expect them to know their basic business strategy at least one year in advance… still, I guess Reggie was always a bit of a showman, even more than a businessman.

Either way, software might not be the only one of their worries… I know many who have said that they don’t like the 3D effect after trying the console in a store, or that the price is too high for them…

I’d also argue that making it too similar to the DS, even in the name, might have made some misinformed customers think that it was just another revision. Considering that Nintendo thrives on innovation, seeing a console that looks exactly like the one before it, could indeed fool more than one person.

Can Nintendo recover? Most certainly, but it might take some measures.

        • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Well he is the one that responded in an interview that the way Nintendo is responding to Kinect and the PS Move is by releasing…a new Wii (referring to a “new” color as a “new Wii”…).

The device wont fail because its going to have Pokemon on it I guess. Though I think the system will still get that wonky declaration that only Nintendo games can sell on it, since this third party software focus isnt moving no units.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Honestly, sometimes I think the poor guy has no clue, and I don’t necessarily think that’s his fault…it’s just how the company is set up. I think NOA have complete freedom as far as marketing goes, but as far as things like business strategy are concerned, they’re required to follow Japan’s lead for the most part (for better or worse).

Gachitora did great! that’s good, the game looks really great!

    And darn you pokemon…

    Umm what else…?

Great doing persona 2! Now engrish announcement nao!

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

At this current rate of decline the next time data is reported, Nintendo 3DS would be at sub 20K levels, while the PSP maintains >30K sales. Could the 3DS prove to be the next gamecube level of success? Perhaps they need to have a Pokemon Gray come out this year.

    Go P2P go!

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I highly doubt that will be the case, considering all the support already announced for the 3DS upfront. There’s no place to go but up; it just needs time and software and a marketing campaign that “clicks” to help sell it.

Software is already accounted for, but the high-profile games that people will care about aren’t going to hit for a while (Ocarina will help in the U.S., but the Japanese don’t really care all that much for Zelda).

That’s the double-edged sword of Nintendo holding back their own games so Koei can have their day in the sun with Samurai Warriors…it’s growing pains.

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

I can’t see the 3DS ending up like the gamecube anyway… specially because is portable. The only problem is that there arent that many games… yet

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

      It’s Pokemon Dalmata, not gray

      • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/GJD6KMPFMNNIHFKRN6FI76P5KA Allison

        What about Pokemon: Monochrome?

  • Kris

A 360-exclusive shmup in the top 10 in Japan?
    Well done, Otomedius…

  • PrinceHeir

is the PS3 Clannad game new or just a port of the PC game?

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

“This new version seems to be a retelling of the same story, but with HD visuals and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fans of the genre should enjoy the upgraded fidelity in both the visuals and the audio. In addition to this, to make the PS3 version more valuable, there will also be a spin-off story available for download on the PSN. Between the current story and the new story, it is reported to take around 200 hours to make it through every branch of the story.”

Got that info from a page by google-ing “Clannad Ps3″… ahhh, i shouldn’t had done that… now i want this for my ps3 T_________T god

      • Guest

        200 hours? of reading??

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_D7CXWFGTTLECEIF4SUI6R5Z5QI Remy

is there no skip function? :-P
          I kid. I kid.

I wonder if 7500 is considered ‘good’ for a ‘port’?
how much did the 360 version in comparison [I only know they were disappointed...]? and if you can, include the other ports as well.

          • malek86

The 360 version opened up with a similar number, around 7k copies. It did have good legs though, ending with around 25k lifetime, but that was probably helped by the popularity of Clannad back then. I think this was a bad time to launch the PS3 port… the show has long ended.

The PS2 and PSP versions were more successful in their first weeks (both launching with around 30k), but they also had less legs, and ultimately sold around 40k lifetime. Incidentally, those PSP numbers are very similar to Little Busters and Tomoyo After, so I guess that’s the best Key can do on the platform.

I don’t think 25k was a bad number for the 360 version, especially considering it was just a port… did they say they were disappointed?

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_D7CXWFGTTLECEIF4SUI6R5Z5QI Remy

Mmm interesting. I believe I read it somewhere, not that it necessarily matters unless you want to compare expectations between ps3/360 releases.
Or I could be simply mistaking it for another game which I tend to do in regards to Clannad. [It also doesn't help that I can't remember if I played it or not despite the familiarity haha...]

          • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

… i think 200 hours may be way too exaggerated though xD, maybe it’s 200 hours without skipping and failing to obtain some endings? I imagine there is more than 1 ending for each girl

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_D7CXWFGTTLECEIF4SUI6R5Z5QI Remy

well, it could be painfully slow auto read? – - -
in either case I can’t recall a single visual novel more than 50~70hours [it doesn't help that they don't have statistics so I know how much time I was consumed haha... :-P].

          • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Yeah, personally, it sounds really stupid to say 200 hours for a VN O_O, i mean, monster hunter or those games where you reach 200 hours, is not like it takes 200 hours to beat, is just that it never ends because you spam missions or play with friends xD.

For a VN to sand alone for 200 hours O_O…

        • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

It seems so…. It does takes time, and if you get really into the game, i have ended some visual novels in like 16~20 hours, and im like, woah, did i actually spend that much time reading?! It’s weird D:

    • malek86

Probably a port of the 360 version.

  • Christian Wright

i’m surprised gachitora didnt sell more. i’m playing it now and i def find it a little more enjoyable than the previous titles. closest i’ll get to being GTO

    • Guest

yeah its an awesome title. Worthy of a U.S./EU release imo. Also would like Kenka Banchou 5, New Yakuza Chapeter: Black Panther and Akiba’s Trip to come here.

    • zweii

Did you pirate it or import it?

  • Zero_Destiny

Yay!!!! For Dragon Quest and PERSONA 2. ^_^ Keep it up. XD

I dunno, seeing Battle & Get! Pokémon Typing DS as the #1 game just makes me kind of sad.
