Marvelous Entertainment And AQ Interactive To Enter Merger

By Ishaan . May 10, 2011 . 1:51am

Marvelous Entertainment, AQ Interactive and a third company named Liveware will be entering a merger, effective from October 1st, according to a Reuters report. At the end of the merger, Marvelous AQL will emerge as the surviving company.

AQ Interactive will be delisted from the stock exchange on September 28th. Last year, AQ Interactive consolidated their individual studios — Cavia (Nier), Artoon (Blue Dragon, The Last Story) and Feelplus (Lost Odyssey) — into AQI itself.

I wonder if it’s gonna be a merger just in name (ie. if the developers of AQ will be, for the most part, let go).

  • I hope this would mean @XSEEDGames:twitter would finally be Marvelous AQL’s exclusive US distributor, as a lot of people have had enough with a lot of Marvelous Entertainment’s works, being subjected to poor localization in the US.

I thought Natsume is generally the source of the poor localization? Well, I guess that’s only counting HM.

      • Even then, @Natsume_Inc own the #HarvestMoon name, while Marvelous owns the game engine and programming.

Meanwhile, the higher-profile poor localizations include: Arc Rise Fantasia, Lux-Pain, and the dry localization of Muramasa: The Demon Blade. All thanks to Ignition.

        • JustaGenericUser

And to clarify what above person said, they were all localized by Ignition. I heard Nostalgia was turned (more?) bland as well.

          • Thanks for the reminder; I’ve been intentionally forgetting Ignition’s name, because of the extremely bad localization they did.

        • puchinri

Well I thought MMV owns the title, but Natsume has the rights to it here, right?

But yeah, the only two other titles I could think of were ARF and Muramasa, and those I knew were Ignition. The one case that comes to mind as an exception is NMH but that was published by Ubisoft, and it didn’t need much localization in certain regards anyway. Well, and there’s Little King’s Story, but Xseed handled that.

I think it’s just that Natsume handles MMV’s main franchise and do a poor job and Ignition snatched up a good handful of other titles (that are great outside of localization problems).

But I am with you in (strongly) hoping that Xseed gets to be their main publisher/localizer here.

woah Marvelous has been getting a lot of companies merging with them huh?

i wonder what will happen to Nier?

oh and please make a HD version of No More Heroes 2 DS

that is all i ask for you

    • Square Enix owns the Nier IP, so this really doesn’t affect it. Plus, Yoko Taro (Nier’s director) left AQ Interactive a while back. SE has expressed interest in continuing Nier, so hopefully they can get Yoko Taro in on that.

      • PrinceHeir

yeah let’s just hope Square will do something about that IP and bring Yoko Taro back :P

        • Belenger

Not likely, remember Drag-on dragoon 2 (Drakengard2) square disregarded Yoko Taro, and put Akira Yasui as the director, hence why draken2 was so lame, such a generic hack slash that was.

          • PrinceHeir

            that sucks :

still Drakengard 2 looks nice :D

  • maxchain

AQ Interactive’s shining armor and fine words won’t get them anywhere!

  • landlock

To be honest I think both companies are on a downward spiral and I’m not sure this merger is gonna help much.

    • malek86

Afraid so. Statistical evidence seems to suggest that mergers actually don’t create any value (or even end up destroying wealth) for the companies, at least 7 times out of 10. There are various problems underneath this, but i guess one of the reasons is that, if the two companies merging were having trouble from the start, it probably means that, unless a miracle occurs (management actually gets a change of heart or something), the new company is gonna have trouble too.

    • I’m quite positive on this merger. Marvelous has a lot of creative potential, but most of their games are outsourced to companies like Neverland, Tamsoft, etc.
AQI develops many games, but they don’t own the rights to their work like The Last Story, Nier, or Lost Odyssey.

One of AQI’s few original games is Cubic Ninja, which Ubisoft is bringing over.

This new company will have Marvelous’ IPs and AQI’s development studios to make the games. I guess we should have seen this coming since AQI (feelplus division) made No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise and Zoo Mania is also a MMV/AQI title.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

If @xseedgames:twitter can nab an exclusivity deal here, that would be absolutely fantastic.

    • Zero_Destiny

Personally I think Xseed should focus on keeping their Falcom deals and work on the next TiTS right now. Oh course they should try to expand their horizon and make deals with as many companies as they can but it’s best that they don’t wear themselves thin since they’re still a smaller company.

That being said I’m perfectly happy with Natsume bringing us Harvest Moon games. I don’t think Xseed has the money or ability to bring out the sheer amount of Harvest Moon games that Natsume has given us in the west. Plus their localizations have been pretty darn good in recent years.

      • Ryos

As much as I like Marvelous, I like Falcom more. The thing is XSEED has so many impressive localizations that other companies seem wanting these days by comparison.

    • We contacted @xseedgames regarding the news and are waiting to hear back from them. If they can comment on the merger, we’ll update ASAP.

  • Revorse

More Nier? How funny would it be to see Nier running around in Touchdown’s clothes

  • Pichi

I would like it if it helped with localization of some Marvelous titles. Hope quality all round won’t go down too bad.

  • urbanscholar

@landlock:disqus & @malek86:disqus make a good and unfortunate point. Merger’s as to help with what’s bad. Hopefully we can see them get stronger with this.

  • DarkWaterClone

It will be interesting to see what can come out of this. I hope with this merger that @xseedgames:twitter can be able to bring out Fate/Extra.

Plus I hope this gives Rune Factory Oceans a better chance to leave Japan. Also I wonder how this will effect Natsume or not.

    • If anything, @Natsume_Inc:twitter’s part here is owning the #HarvestMoon name.

  • JustaGenericUser

Why do I see XSeed Games typed as @xseedgames in little boxes? It’s a bit annoying reading it that way.
