This Week In Sales: The Golden Week Effect

By Ishaan . May 11, 2011 . 4:32pm

Period: The week of May 2nd – May 8th (2011)

Top-seller: Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional – 43,886 | Total sales: 454,781

Nintendo 3DS sales: 29,149 | Total sales: 977,695

Just like the week prior, this week’s sales post also covers the Golden Week period in Japan, which runs from April 29th – May 5th every year. The holiday effect is very evident in the week’s top-20 chart (below), which depicts a number of popular games seeing a boost in sales.

Still at the #1 position, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional continues to sell well, no doubt aided partly by the Golden Week effect. Interestingly, Pokémon Black/White overtook Monster Hunter Portable 3rd during Golden Week, while New Super Mario Bros. Wii shot up from the #30 spot to #16, with Wii Sports Resort close behind it. Donkey Kong Country Returns, too, saw a boost of its own.

Meanwhile, Professional Baseball Spirits 2011 on the PSP has overtaken its PlayStation 3 counterpart, just as one suspected it eventually would. Also on the PSP front, The 2nd Super Robot Taisen Z remains in the top-10, at #5.

Behind it at #4, Tale of the Last Promise is now at 78,621 units sold, according to Media-Create. We wonder how much of an effect the PlayStation Network downtime is having on its sales. If you recall, Imageepoch were planning a charity drive with the downloadable version of the game on PSN.

Well, i imagine tales of the last promise should already be in blue numbers, so imagepooch should at least be relaxed, it still had sold more than patapon 3, a new franchise sold more than the 3rd part of a decent franchise x0x, or maybe japanese are just tired of patapon xD

It has been less than a month since Tales Of The last Promise first released (If my memory serves me right, it was 28 april..) and it has sold 78k units so far.I hope its not a bad number (for half a month since commercialisation). But I remember that ImageEpoch CEO was aiming for 150k units (or was he hoping to achieve that number of sales?), so I hope that IE won’t be dissapointed in their first self made and published title and BANZAI FOR JRPS!!!!

Maybe they were hoping for the PSN version to get a good part of the sales as well (considering the lower price and especially the charity deal, gamers actually seem to be a sensitive bunch). Bad timing, alas. Maybe they will still do it though.

But it could be worse, it could be Chunsoft.

And after seeing a lot of new franchise until now, i think 78k is REALLY good for a new game, especially in japan, but seriously i imagine the could have a better number with the psn sales, it’s really a shame what happened, damn hax0rz

The question is more of: did they wanted 150k Worldwide, or 150k from Japan alone?

My copy of Tale of the Last Promise just came.. AmiAmi was nice enough to include the pre-order artbook too.. the artbook is okay.. it’s a fold out booklet within in a hard outer cover.. and inside there’s the Black Rock Shooter preview DVD or something.. and I got my very first “bookstore card” too, the shower one yay :)

Will try the game in a bit, haven’t played my PSP seriously in months… I don’t like it it doesn’t hold a charge like the DS does.. battery’s always drained when I haven’t played it for a while.

im pretty used to have the charging plug there xD my hand just fixed itself (and earphones cable x-x)

      • Aoshi00

I don’t play w/ my PSP too much so… if I take the battery out the charge wouldn’t drain though, or as fast.. but it’s a pain to take it out and put it back in.. I usually don’t charge my DS until I see the red light come on..

Hopefully I could sink more hours into this game, I neglect the Wii and the PSP the most…
