Final Fantasy Tactics: War Of The Lions Is Being Reworked For iPad, Too

By Ishaan . May 17, 2011 . 11:02am

Once upon a time, Square Enix announced a port of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for the iPhone. Information on the iPhone release has been scarce, and Square haven’t talked much about the game since then. Today, however, they announced that it will be released “somewhere between late June – mid July”.

Additionally, Square have also announced a separate high-res port of the game for the iPad, which will be released sometime after the iPhone version, due to the art being reworked for high-definition support. They posted an example of redrawn high-res face graphics being used for the iPad version:

I gotta say this, strategy RPG’s for tablet devices interests me.

Unlike FF3, whom I bought last week for ipad and won’t really play through. It just doesn’t fit the medium for me.

Also, low-poly with pixelated unfiltered textures clearly looses against classy pixel art.

What, low-poly with unfiltered textures is awesome. Look at Quake or Magic Carpet or any other PC game from the mid-nineties.

It only looks bad when you increase the resolution or the number of polygons (Quake 2 without hardware acceleration was pretty bad). If it looks primitive enough, it’s ok. In fact, it’s my favorite visual style.

I guess the higher resolution of FF3 iPad doesn’t help its case.

FF3 on iPad looks really crude to me, because they kept the whole “we can’t possibly pump more poligons than this so HERE’S A CARDBOARD ROCK! pixelated for your viewing pleasure!” and the whole unfiltered skinned textures kill me.

  •  ;o; Wow do those high-res portraits look beautiful. <3

After playing Tactics Ogre for the PSP, Final Fantasy Tactics lost a lot of its appeal. The remake of Tactics Ogre pretty much fixed everything that was wrong with the genre.

Really? I was thinking of getting WotL, considering I’m loving Ogre. I played it some time ago and didn’t think much of it, but I feel like giving it another chance now.

One thing bothers me in Ogre, though: battles feel slow, especially when it happens in a big field. That gets on my nerves. Other than that, when the game shines, it really shines. Great story too. I’m at the Hanging Gardens, gotta finish it one of these days.

I think I’ll end up getting it anyway, on ebay or something.

Well, I love the experience systems in Tactics Ogre. In most SRPGs I’ve played (like WotL), I have to focus on making sure certain characters get killls in order to raise their XP and skill points. Tactics Ogre lets me focus my strategy on winning the battle, which is awesome.

Also, if you want fast battles, I’d avoid WotL for the PSP. There’s noticeable slowdown for most attack effects. Maybe the iOS versions will be better.

EDIT: Also, if WotL is downloadable for via PSN in your region, maybe the slowdown is absent. I have no idea.

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Oh yeah, I remember reading about that. Sounds bad and restrictive. Considering I’m kinda suicidal in Ogre, I don’t know if I would be able to enjoy the game like that.

Edit: I don’t think it is, but thanks for the suggestion! (I prefer physical stuff anyway… I just hope it’s nothing TOO unbearable)

          • PrinceHeir

             hell yeah :D

            Physical FTW ^^

though i hope the slowdown is not that bad. i have the game :)

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Damn straight! Nothing beats sniffing a new game box and manual and reading said manual while taking a dump (or something). So good.

        • If you…somehow find a way to run the game off of SD it runs really well.  There’s no slowdown.

  • Can’t wait for this

  • With abysmal slowdown added, right?

    • LastFootnote

       I guess we’ll see. I hope not.

  •  i will get the ipad one when its on sale.

  • and this is all building up to a Final Fantasy Tactics II/Spinoff/successor, right?

  • Andy Dremeaux

I wonder if they’ll be able to conquer that futuristic technology known as “looping music” this time

Looking at you, Secret of Mana iPhone.

  • Yeah, this will make me want to buy an iProduct. /sarcasm

  • Too bad the high-res version isn’t being made for iPhone 4 too, which has almost as high a resolution as iPad.

I really want to get FFT:WotL for PSP. I hope the load times aren’t as bad as everyone says (although knowing myself I would probably bear with them). I loved Advance and Advance 2 and in general I adore SPRGs (I actually like them better than regular RPGs and that’s saying a lot from me! xD )
