4 Vs. 1 Multiplayer In Wii U’s Chase Mii

Recommended Videos

Chase Mii is hide and seek done with the Wii U and a Super Mario Bros. skin. In this game, one person runs away and four players on the same team try to catch the runner.

I started Chase Mii on the seeking side, playing as a Mii dressed in a Toad costume. The runner, a Mii dressed like Mario, gets a fifteen second head start before team Toad can begin. The seekers have two minutes and thirty seconds to catch Mario or the lone player using the Wii U controller wins.

All of the characters run at the same speed, but if you dive to catch Mario and miss it takes roughly two seconds to get up. That’s enough time for Mario to get escape. Catch Mii is supposed to be a team game where players talk to each other and say things like "Mario is in the green area!" or "help in the red zone!" Perhaps, because we were all strangers playing Catch Mii, communication was limited. We still managed to catch Mario with a few seconds to spare, though.

Then I switched sides and played as Mario using the Wii U controller. On the controller’s screen you can see Mario’s position and on the omnipotent map the position of all the Toads. Team Toad only has a distance meter, not nearly as helpful, but the four Toads are supposed to work together to cover ground. Dodging all of the Toads for the entire time is harder than it sounds. One of the tricks I picked up was running diagonally to confuse players instead of straight lines. An invincibility star popped up in the middle of the map, but I waited too long to grab it. When there was only 30 seconds left on the clock it vanished.

Chase Mii is similar to Pac-Man Vs. in some ways even though it’s not a proper "game." Nintendo says it’s just a tech demo to give an idea how multiplayer games could work, but I think Chase Mii could be repackaged along with other tech demos into a Wii Play-like equivalent for Wii U.
