Meet Your Rival Ninjas In Senran Kagura: Portrait of Girls

By Ishaan . July 1, 2011 . 8:28am

It’s been a while since we heard any news of Senran Kagura: Portrait of Girls, so let’s take a look at some new characters and screenshots to fix that. The characters below are some of the rival ninjas you’ll face in Senran Kagura.

These ninjas attend Viper Academy, and are the equals of the Hanzo Academy ninjas that you play as. Judging by some of the screenshots and the way their portraits are lined up on Marvelous’ website, each ninja has their own rival on the opposing team. We’ve included links to their respective pages on the game’s website where you can listen to voice samples as well.

While the Hanzo Academy ninjas — the “good guys” — are lead by Kiriya, the identity of your rivals’ leader is unknown. Unless Marvelous decide to reveal him beforehand, folks will have to wait until the game’s release in September to find out.

Haruka’s favorite food is what? o-o

    • Umm yea, fixed. Misunderstanding on my part, sorry.

      • It’s Kombu strips. At least, that’s what my translation of the official site’s info page yielded.

        • Yea, I missed the kanji at the end. It made me raise an eyebrow, too, until we got it sorted it. That’ll teach me to read in a hurry again.

  • Damn finally something I actually look forward to!!!! Homura and Hikage looks so pretty damn awesome I will love the scenes when they show up I know it!! As a good ecchi game I hope there are a LOT of funny perverted rival talk and events, lol.!

    • DanteJones

I totally agree, when someone can hold three katanas in ONE HAND it’s an epic win right there. :D

EDIT: Now that I look at it again they might be those other swords, wakizashi I think. BUT STILL.

      • I know right! I get a Masamune Date feeling from her and that’s awesome! Lol I also like her whole design she seems to be the hotblooded badass! :D

        • Don’t forget: She’s holding them like Wolverine’s Claws.

          Katana. Wolverine. Claws.

        • And she still has a long Nodachi on her back. Dang, girl… How’re you gonna hold that thing when you’re using all your Katana? Between your teeth?

          …Actually, that’d be bloody awesome.

  • Now where are the “other” pictures.

      Look for 閃乱カグラ

      • Katsuragi seems to dominate the selection, followed by Hibari. Gee… I wonder why.

      • DanteJones

Initiate countdown for nosebleed in 3… 2… 1…

There’s a decent amount of quality art for a game that isn’t even out yet.

        • That’s Pixiv for you. The amount of Otaku power there transcends even heaven and hell!!

        • It’s impressive, but doesn’t even slightly compare to the amount of Dragon’s Crown artwork. There are like…. 50 pages of Sorceress artwork.

  • raikage

There will be a live presentation of the game on the 3rd, which you can watch here:

  • DanteJones

I’d be pretty stoked if this came to NA/EU. The box art is relatively tame for what content the game has, not that they couldn’t change it. They’d probably change the name though, maybe just keep it Senran Kagura or something. It would be worth it if that means we get to play it. :D

  • Hikage seriously reminds me a lot of Yuuka.  Like, if she decided to leave Gensokyo and become a ninja of sorts.

  • blah blah

Company that brings it to us wins literally a billion internets.

  • This is another reason why I want a 3DS! Marvelous characters

  • That green haired girl reminds me alot of Yuuka from Touhou…

    • puchinri

Quite a few of these girls on the rival remind me of girls from anime or other games.

  • AzureNova

This is one of my soul reasons for buying a 3DS

  • Okay, guys. Be honest:

Whose “I want this game!!” meter just went up? Mine certainly did.

If anything can convince me to get a 3DS, this is one of the top factors, so far. …Perhaps I’m getting a little too excited about this game. On the other hand, I can’t help it! Fan-service over-use is one thing, but a game this bold and blatant…? Especially after a strong censorship movement like Ishihara’s obnoxiously strict Tokyo Manga Ban? I really wanna see the game’s quality and reception.

  • RagnaXBL

    When i saw Hikage+Mirai <3

  • malek86

Poor Haruka didn’t reach 100 for just one stupid cm. That’s gotta burn.

In other news, I really really hope this game won’t suck. It would be terrible if they wasted all this potential with a mediocre gameplay.

  • XypherCode

    please come to NA :D

  • IceRomancer

This comes to America, and I’m sold on a 3DS! :D

    Haruka Om nom nom :3

  • Nice really nice now when can we get it

  • Shinji Kazuya

    *gasp* 3D BOOBIES!!! O:

If this come to Europe I r getting it!

  • Darkrise

    Hikage, Homura, and Haruka <3

    Damn Nintendo's region-lock…

    • IKR?! ughhhhh
      I love them also <3

    • Crimson_Cloud

Yeah, the infamous region-lock. Xbox360’s and Nintendo’s greatest weakness.

    • Hmm~ You like your girls with a bit of an “H”, I see. :3

……My apologies to the whole of Siliconera for making this joke.

  • ninjaonizuka

    giggity :3

  • Guest

I doubt the majority of you complaining about region locking would even be able to play these game in Japanese. Your whining is getting really old. If it wasn’t region locked you start complaining about a lack of localization.

    Anyways games looking great.

    • Really now~? I can’t speak for others, but I’m never letting go about the region-lock. Ever. Especially after they made it so convenient with the DS.

And don’t forget: A good part of the frequent visitors here, if not a large part, like Japanese games. And a subset of them are importers with varying degrees of Japanese proficiency. We do mourn about the potential lack of localizations, but in the end, if there’s no English release, we’re gonna carry our own weight: import and translate to ourselves.

      • tr1gun1212

Agree. The region-locking doesn’t make it impossible, it just means that I have to choose which region of 3DS to buy – so in the end, I buy a Japanese 3DS and am unable to buy NA games.

I refuse to buy two – then Nintendo wins.

  • Christian Wright

i think im gonna get a japanese 3ds for this if its actually any good and for a possible jump sequel

  • puchinri

The rivals don’t feel as well-designed to me. They’re not as cute (or original…).
I wonder if there are other students at the school to talk to? Or do you just have your team and the rival team?
(And are males only the leaders of the girls? Or students too?)

    • Exactly my thought. They aren’t good rivals.

      • puchinri

        Indeed. (And sadly.)

    • I think that was the point of their actual design. To be somewhat opposite to the heroines.

      • puchinri

I don’t know about that, you can be the opposite of your rival and still be cute and original. I don’t think there’s ever an excuse for some characters being not as well-designed. (Well, in the case of some seriously background NPCs maybe, but even that goes for certain situations.)

  • Covnam

Not only does this need a US release, but it needs to come with an artbook as well

  • Dimentionalist

God, Siliconera is ALWAYS updating about this game! I’m sick of it! Just give it a breast- I meant to say rest… y-yeah, rest. Senran Kagura, it’s not like I like you or anything!

    • KotaroInugami

      How tsundere…

  • Ben Tan

if this game does well, there needs to a be a ps vita port with transfarring so we can all get 3d on tv and boob tickling with the vita touch pad

  • Have you guys seen the trailer? The game itself just seems like a carbon copy of every brawler that has made an appearance, with stiff animations and unimpressive graphics. The characters don’t even cast shadows. I know that the 3DS is capable of much more. I’m sorry for being mean, but this game is being promoted entirely on breasts and how they jiggle.
Games should be so much more than abnormal boobs.
This is the reason why it hurts so much knowing that good developers like Ensemble Studios, Cing and Flight Plan had to be shut down, while developers who put in the minimum work + boobs are successful.

    • Oh, yes. I’ve seen the trailer. Multiple times, just to be sure.

I can’t speak for others, but personally, I think the game knows about its absurdity and it’s trying to have fun. And Marvelous has published a lot of fun games before; I’m willing to see where they’re going despite the fan-service storm. Basically, it seems like a fan-service game in a good developer/publisher’s hands; that’s what makes some of us intrigued.

Besides, the game’s not completely about busts; the trailer also announced visual novel and action parts. Marvelous’ games are not perfect, I’ll admit that. But they certainly know how to make fun games.

  • Strain42

The more I look into this game the more I wanna play it. The more I wanna play it the more let down I feel because it probably won’t be localized…

    But if it IS…Yay

  • Guest

Start writing to NIS, XSeed or Atlus then if u guys want the game here…… Certainly NoA wont bother as usual….

  • aoihana

I saw this game and immediately wanted a 3DS. I can’t wait for it. I nearly have enough for a Japanese 3DS. Flare Red here I come!
