Are Capcom Teasing Another Devil May Cry Game?

By Ishaan . July 14, 2011 . 9:30am

This year marks Devil May Cry’s 10th anniversary, and Capcom are holding an art contest to celebrate.

Capcom are asking fans on their community hub to send in artwork of iconic characters from the series, and the winners will have their work featured in a new, to-be-announced Capcom game. They’ll also get a copy of said game.

Last month, a Spanish retailer put up a listing for a Devil May Cry HD Collection, which has now been taken down. While the box art for the collection was fake, and the product itself may have been speculation on their part, seeing an actual 10th anniversary compilation wouldn’t be a surprise.

Sounds like that HD collection may not be as untrue as Capcom claims.

  • badmoogle

Will Ninja Theory send their own fan artwork as well? :(

    • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

For the love of everything good in gaming, please…

      NO.

    • RupanIII

lol I just had a mental picture of Tameem Antoniades looking in a mirror and drawing a picture of himself to send to Capcom

      • puchinri

That is a horrific thought, but I lol’d. (And could totally picture it too.)

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

Ninja Theory already did. It’s called dMc.

      • badmoogle

Well they can always try to do it AGAIN…Just to piss fans even more lol.:p

  • http://twitter.com/Fire_Sofa Phil

Capcom just loves getting fans to whip up artwork for them.  For the amount of work required to create a worthwhile entry, the price of a videogame that they’d probably buy anyways and having their art (now owned by Capcom) featured in some obscure time-trial mode menu definitely seems like worthy compensation.

Not to say that the creator might not enjoy doing it simply for the fun of creating art, but come on.  Is that the best Capcom can do?  These guys are horrible when it comes to anything related to their fans.

    • Exkaiser

I don’t know, getting a $60 game for a piece of fanart- not something you can usually sell- seems like a decent enough trade to me.

But what do I know, I quit illustration.

      • puchinri

Well, commissions for fan and original art can run pretty high ($20-$70+ dollars). So if the art is worth winning the competition, the artist probably could make enough to buy the game anyway with just one or two commissions.

      • http://twitter.com/Fire_Sofa Phil

Well, the fanart that is chosen is usually far from novice fanboy stuff and most likely done by a professional in the field.  Not to mention artists sell commissions based on games, comics and movies all the time.

Prices vary, but usually artists will charge around $120 or so for a full character commission.  In this case, however, Capcom is using the art for more than just a wall decoration, but in a product that thousands will see and experience.

I’m not trying to be bitter, I just don’t like when artists are devalued.

        • Exkaiser

Well, yes, but I’m talking as an ex-professional in the field.

Many illustrators (all of them) produce a lot of art that doesn’t go into either commission work or into the portfolio. If I didn’t hate producing art and I cared about DMC, I wouldn’t mind pounding out a quick piece as an entry. It’s not a very large reward, but I wouldn’t put as much effort into it as I would, say, something that could pay my bills. Not to say I would put out a crappy piece of work and submit it, but something that doesn’t require a lot of mental devotion. Something to blow off steam, in other words.

And, well, it is always the artist’s choice what to submit and what to submit to. If they really are a professional and they feel the possible reward isn’t worth the effort, then they wouldn’t do it, in which case it doesn’t matter.

I’m just not finding it very notable in any respect- positive or negative.

  • Aiddon

Probably the HD collection. I bet you anything 99.999999999% of the artwork will be of the Dante we all know and love instead of NT’s godawful rendition

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

      Don’t forget about Nero

      • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

Sadly, everybody does. A shame, since Nero had a decent storyline. Oh, and what about Vergil? He needs some screentime. It’s been a while.

      • Aiddon

might as well bring the whole cast with Lady, Trish, Vergil, and Sparda while we’re at it.

Putting my money on the HD collection.

  • http://gameplay.pl/keii Keiician

Please take my money and make it so!

  • MrRobbyM

It’s a DMC collection. I bet all the cash I have in my wallet. Which is only 4 bucks.

  • RagnaXBL

    Devil may cry puzzle game?

    • Mister_Nep

I like the way you think.

  • Zonic505

Considering all the hints/leaks of a HD collection, I’m pretty sure that’s the game they’re talking about.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

I hope they all 4 games in 1 disc, all with Trophy Support and there was a special edition that also includes DmC, then so be it.

  • Nei_chan

awesome, an HD collection. Then maybe we will also get Onimusha HD Collection

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/W6TMBSN7GKFPT3KAOYP6FZR5VU Strider Tom-Tom

      Onimusha HD Collection! Yes please!

    • Mister_Nep

I greatly wish for both Collections.

    • badmoogle

First they should make a NEW Onimusha game (developed internally by Capcom) and THEN release an HD collection.

  • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

How about a REAL Devil May Cry 5, not that “DmC” disaster-in-the-making (oh, snap!).

    • xAKUM3TSUx

Ya know- I’ma have to say that the gameplay mechanics they showed in DMC Reboot via E3 were pretty good…For a PS2 game. Graphics I guess were all right… But really if the visuals and character movement is THAT lame. Then PLEASE don’t label this piece-o-**** game with the Devil May Cry name. Especially when the producer Tameem Antoniades (as much as he dosen’t want to admit it) got the new look of Dante off of him-F’n-self!

      • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

Why he’d want to base a character off himself is BEYOND ME. He doesn’t have the…well, he just isn’t a movie star, let’s say that.

  • eilegz

REMAKE dmc 1 with dmc4 engine and gameplay…

    • kupomogli

This.  I’d like to see DMC, DMC2, and DMC3 remade with the DMC4 engine.

    • mikanko

This would instantly make it better than DMC4 since you’d get to play as Dante for an entire game.

  • BGMcDF

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

  • neo_firenze

I’d like to see the once announced (and quietly ignored after the initial reveal) DMC for PSP get revived as an early Vita title…

    • Testsubject909

DMC HD collection with Transfarring between PSP, PS3 and PSV?

    • Kris

Or even the RE PSP title… I wonder if that just turned into Revelations?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Carmona/100000347329518 Christopher Carmona

If its the HD collection, my wallet won’t survive this year.

  • AzureNova

Look people, how about we just bring Nero back and call it a day.

  • sandra10

I just saw a Capcom interview on Gamespot. Apparently there are 4 games being developed for the Vita: an unknown launch game, Street Fighter x Tekken, Monster Hunter, and another unknown game. I hope it’s Devil May Cry! …outsourced to Platinum Games. :D

Kamiya’s a boss. Bayonetta was awesome. He should direct the next game.

    • http://twitter.com/Aura_Thunder Ghist

This. A DMC game with the combat of Bayonetta and the speed of Vanquish? The idea alone is better than Tameem’s self-servicing Ego project.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

You guys know that NT’s initial concept of Dante was closer to the original, right? Capcom were the ones that asked them to change it and make it appear more radically different. As the game’s supervisors, they’re the ones who approved the final look.

        • Orenkie Satahmo

          That’s a bunch of bullhocky.
NT said the first design they sent CAPCOM got rejected cause he looked like a wanker with skinny jeans and suspenders, with no shirt.

They didn’t just get ONE design shot down, they said they worked for a year just to get the one they have now approved.

That lil Tameem aka Ninjatam aka Tamtam, keeps wanting to push those homo-esqu designs, which is why we still have the one they ended up with today.

  • Souji Tendou

I’m pretty sure it’s DMC HD remastered collection. I’ll just forget an abomination called DmC, and then I’ll play DMC (1) & 3 again but this time on bigger screen. Hurrah…!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Humzah-Jan/100001147084979 Humzah Jan

This would make me forgive them for outsourcing DMC.

  • Code

    Maan I’d totally be up for a DMC Collection, but by that I mean DMC, and DMC3. Although with it, MGS, and Shadow of the Colossus/ICO Collections, I can’t help but feel like the PS3 is indirectly cannibalizing my own PS2 collection which makes me a little sad T_T’ …But the sadness is quickly relieved with an intense urge to throw money at them omo;

  • PrinceHeir

    that would be ace :)

still can’t believe capcom is outsourcing this too Ninja Theory
