Here’s What’s New In The House Of The Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut

By Ishaan . July 16, 2011 . 11:59am

Sega’s PlayStation 3 release of The House of the Dead: Overkill will be out toward the end of October, on the 25th. House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut has PlayStation Move support, and two additional levels that weren’t in the Wii version. It also has a new crossbow weapon.

Sega had new modes added, too. The Hardcore Mode makes it so mutants can only be killed with headshots, and the game’s final boss fight has been extended. They also improved the cutscenes with motion capture and added trophy support.

Here’s a few screenshots of the Extended Cut:

  • They should also include House of the Dead 4.

    • A HotD4/EX bundle would be nice (though EX isn’t Mature right? may not be a good pair then)

Since we’re talking blu-ray, why not HotD 1,2,3,4 and EX? It was disappointing to me that the Wii compilation included only 2 and 3, since 1 was the one I enjoyed playing the most.

        • IIRC Sega played the “dated graphics” card for a reason (considering there’s a PC version it cannot be the lost source code alibi)

They ported Gunblade NY to Wii with the same arcade board I just don’t’ think they want to bother really.

          I wouldn’t mind a remake.

There is a long-standing rumor that Sega has lost the source code to HOD1. I don’t really believe it, but admittedly it’s true that the game never showed up again.

It shouldn’t be a matter of space or Blu-ray anyway, since HOD1/2/3 together take less than one giga. Heh, you could probably put all those games, including 4 and EX, onto a single layer Wii disc. If they didn’t, it’s probably because they didn’t think it would sell (I can understand that for EX, but it’s weird that they never brought 4 anywhere).

          • I thought the source code thing relates to just the Saturn.  If they cannot work with the PC version a lot of games from that era are screwed. o_O

4 and EX may not work for Wii, other Lindbergh titles were put on PS3/360 (though I get you meant file size)

I think the version of Panzer Dragoon included in Orta was the PC one. And I also think the Sega Rally Championship included with 2006 was the Model 2 version. Who knows, maybe the Saturn versions are more difficult to port or something. But whatever the reason, we don’t see many Saturn games anymore. I guess they would look bad today, but still. Not even as extras?

And I remember Sega saying they would think about porting HOD4 to the Wii if the sales of Return were good (guess they would have downgraded it…). It never happened, so who knows, maybe Returns didn’t do so well. As for EX, it would have probably been a better fit for the Wii rather than the PS3, what with the minigames theme. And there was no Move back then anyway.

But I guess that’s a moot point now. Chance are that Sega decided to reboot the series with Overkill (whether that was a successful attempt or not, I don’t know…) so I don’t think we’ll see the older games anymore.

i hope they don’t reboot it! hotd isn’t that important of a franchise story wise. it is like rebooting dead rising or pacman. why bother? just release the hd collection move. i’ll be glad and a lot more people will too i’m sure.

you have to take into account the ‘remake’ i’m talking antialiazing and (hopefully) new textures too. that can’t make just one gig

You know, it wouldn’t surprise me if Sega lost the code for HOTD1. They lost it for Panzer Dragoon Saga, so nothing would surprise me about them, at this point.

They have to plug a comatose man’s brain into the brain of the comatose director but he has just 8 minutes to extract the information of the source code so that we can have the game again

i have to say even if it isn’t sega but konami…. psn move silent hill arcade move could be move ALRIgHT!

It might have to be a stand-alone title (with some exclusive not found in the original arcade game).  I don’t know how big HOTD 4 could be on Blu-Ray, but I know porting the game from arcade machine to PS3 could be easy because HOTD 4 operate on the SEGA Lindbergh arcade machine. The Lindbergh machine used the same GPU the PS3 used, so that could make porting easy and also the Move would work for the gameplay in HOTD 4.  I play HOTD 4 on arcade and I can tell that game was made to handle PS3 and the Move.

why is everyone ignoring the elephant in the room?
house of the dead 1234HD COLLECTION move! + panzer dragoon 12rpgxbox HDCOLLECTION!!! where are the question i want to hear you ask jhournalists!!!!! i’ll buy that game on release date, my move in hungry but guys! GUYS!! tell me me buying  this one will push you to remake the others HD COLLECTION MOVE!

    • How is it ignored if somebody replied to me 2 hours ago with a similar idea?

Panzer Dragoon collection would probably just include Zwei and Orta (original is in Orta).  Saga’s source code is missing meaning just a bare bones port would be a pain.  Zwei perhaps too.

I’d like a collection of Virtua Cop 1-3 myself.

With VC3 being a Chihiro game, and the other ones appearing on PS2, this could have easily been done on the Wii during the on-rails craze. If they didn’t do it then (preferring Ghost Squad in its place), it means they just don’t care anymore.
