Strider And Ghost Rider Join Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

By Ishaan . July 20, 2011 . 9:31am

Yep, you guessed it. Capcom are developing Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game will add 12 new characters to the roster (for a total of 50), a “refined” fighting system, eight new stages and new modes.

Amongst new characters in the game are Strider, Hawkeye, Ghost Rider and Firebrand. Capcom say they’re also improving other features, such as online functionality. Amongst these, they’ve included a Spectator Mode, which allows you to watch live online matches.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is pegged for release in November at $39.99.

  • Strider I <3 U

  • Aiddon

can’t they release a DLC version for people who already HAVE the game? They did this with Super Street Fighter IV. Still, seeing Strider and Firebrand is awesome

    • short answer: no.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

They refined the fighting system drastically, they said. That’s not something you can download a little patch for

      • Aiddon

so they say; considering how I’ve seen patches drastically change games over the past few years forgive if I’m very, very, VERY suspicious of such notions

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Although I haven’t seen any major patches like that for console games (at least that I can remember), I still agree with you. They probably could release most, if not all, of this as DLC/Patches, but they’d rather make everyone buy a whole new game because, well, it’s Capcom after all.

          • Exkaiser

To be fair, 12 characters at the DLC running rate of $5 is $60 anyways. And Ultimate includes Jill and Shuma-Gorath, so it would be 14 DLC characters in total anyways…

12 characters is a major addition. I wouldn’t mind picking up a whole new copy for $40 if I owned MvC3. A patch version like SSFIV AE would be ideal, but it’s also much larger than that.

            EDIT: Whoops, $8 is Blazblue.

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

As DLC, though, you can choose which characters you want. I know that most of the now-leaked characters I’d play as maybe once. So if they were DLC, I could just pay the five dollars for the ones I want and leave it at that.

          • Exkaiser

That suits you just fine, but what about the people who would actually like to have all the characters?

And, well, as I understand, the DLC that’s there didn’t exactly sell so hot. No sense dropping twelve more off and not getting a whole lot of return on them.

As I said, a patch version like SF would be ideal, but fourteen DLC characters is just silly.

      • A little patch no, but you can still -very easily- create a patch to change balancing and a “fighting system” as they put it. All that requires is changing some rather small variables in code. You’re looking at some megabytes, tops, for size of a balance patch.

For evidence, let use see Exhibit A with BlazBlue Continuum Shift -> Continuum Shift II. They seemed to do it quite easily. (The only reason that balance patch was the hundred or so megs was due to Platinum’s resource files being included in the same download)

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

I don’t think they’re just changing balancing issues, though, or so they want us to think. One thing, at least, from what I’ve seen in videos, X-Factor seems to have gotten quite the revamp. Plus the HUD is different. You gotta have a whole new game for a different HUD :P

        • neo_firenze

Continuum Shift to CSII didn’t also add 12 characters, 8 stages, and new interface though.  This sounds like a much more substantial change than CS -> CSII was.

And let’s not bring up ArcSys as an example of reasonable updates.  Don’t forget they charged $8 for each of their 3 DLC fighters in BB:CS.  If Capcom charged that much for the new UMvC3 characters it would be $96.  Honestly, Arc are the masters of selling a new release with more minor changes (see the many many GGXX variants) – Capcom’s updates always tend to be more substantial.

          • “Continuum Shift to CSII didn’t also add 12 characters, 8 stages, and new interface though.  This sounds like a much more substantial change than CS -> CSII was. ”
12 characters, 8 stages, and a new interface don’t do jack towards revising balance or the actual gameplay itself; in reference to my original comment. Code changes are freaking small. Any balance and gameplay changes are as said, megabytes at the largest. Plus I think Jill, Shuma, Valk, Makoto, Platinum, Scarlet, Rain, and Kenshi all show us that it’s perfectly feasible to offer new resources as downloadable components to an existing product.

“And let’s not bring up ArcSys as an example of reasonable updates.”
Why not? Let’s assume I’m a brand new customer to the BlazBlue franchise and pick up Continuum Shift. I hop onto LIVE or PSN and get an update, and am instantly playing the latest version. I have the latest balance changes and character tweaks, and am ready for any form of tournament or competitive scene. At that point it is completely my choice if I want the additional characters or not.

$8 for a character is a lot. Won’t deny that. At the same time though, those characters are VASTLY different from anyone in the existing cast and offer a playstyle you couldn’t find without them. Arc actually put effort into those characters, and I don’t mind paying that fee. (i’m comparing this to SSF4AE’s 4x “new” characters. The twins are new, but i count them more as 1.5 characters due to similarity to each other. Oni and eRyu just come across as Gouken+Akuma and Akuma, with maybe a couple new moves each.)

“Honestly, Arc are the masters of selling a new release with more minor changes (see the many many GGXX variants)”
Yeah, they are. They actually worked to actively try and keep GGXX somewhat balanced and up to date for the GG scene. All those arcade updates ended up as separate discs because the technology didn’t exist at the time. Now that we have the option of DLC on modern consoles, notice we’re only seeing a new disc upgrade when there’s a whole new story mode or something of the like. As far as updating and supporting their games after release, they’re actually making good proper use of the technology. (Expensive characters aside) If anything Capcom is stuck in the past with it’s disc updates, knowing (through SSF4AE) that we -can- use DLC to update but refusing to.

Look, my point in all this is that Capcom -could EASILY- make it DLC for existing owners and not screw us over. They could charge a reasonable fee. I’m sure 12 characters of resources ain’t cheap. But FFS, to claim that such new content -requires- a disc is demeaning and insulting to me. That’s Capcom not giving me credit for intelligence.I’m not saying we should have it ONLY as DLC. A lot of peeps like to own the whole product on one disc for ease of use. I am saying that it’s idiotic for Capcom to imply that such content is “too big” for downloadable updates.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

As much as I would be happy about this, why another physical release? Why not another update? Well there’s probably going to be an update… But I guess this is my problem as I like having a physical copy of my games and I like collecting them… And right after they cancelled Mega Man Legends 3? :(
Capcom, what happened to your liiiiiiiiiiggggghhht?

  • FireCouch

Can’t wait for this.  It will be amazing.

  • Ugh. Legends 3 being cancelled, and then more cash cowing from MvC3 announced 2 days later. Glad to see that exactly as predicted, Capcom has their priorities in the right place. =|

That’s not to say I won’t be enjoying this one. 12 characters is a nice sizable addition. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth that Capcom definitely shows us what their (obvious) focus is so soon after Legends 3’s demise. Also, requiring users to buy an update to MvC3 before they can get spectator mode, an option that EVERY BLOODY OTHER ONLINE FIGHTER has already had? That’s just sad on your part Capcom.

Here’s to hoping it’s at least DLC for existing MvC3 users, and for a PC release in the same vein as SSF4AE.

    • To be fair, the timing just happened to work out that way. I doubt it was intentional. This week is Comic-Con, so obviously UMvC3’s announcement was planned for this week. Let’s not keep bringing Legends 3 up in posts about other games. :)

      • Eh, not going to deny that. I know games go into planning a long time before they get announced, especially at Comic-Con for a big comic themed game. Just still a bit of a sore spot. Too soon. =P

    • Wait and see Capcom put a main MegaMan unit in Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3: Arcade Edition.

  • I really don´t mind buying this game again, in fact, I´m glad It´s on disc format, but let´s hope they make new backgrounds (at least 4, fot what It can be seen in the pictures, we already have 2), new soundtrack/remixes, and while they are at it, give us a decent game cover this time.
Can´t wait to play with Mr Johnny Blaze.

    • FireCouch

There are 8 new stages, man.

  • glad I waited, lol

  • XypherCode

    uhhmm…retail or DLC?

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

The way they talked about it makes it seem like retail. Plus it’s capcom and they love releasing new games instead of DLC

  • KyoyaHibari

Did ANYONE want Firebrand? I don’t know about Hawkeye, but I’m pretty sure people wanted Ghost Rider, I’m just hoping the last 4 for Capcom’s side are Bass.EXE, Date, Jet Black and Roy Bromwell :D

    • mikanko

I am really happy with Red Arremer.  Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is a favorite of mine, and Capcom sorely needed more villians than just Wesker.

Hawkeye is a bit of a head scratcher, but it’s probably because he’ll be in the new Avengers movie next year.

      • “Hawkeye is a bit of a head scratcher”, so was Taskmaster, Dormammu, M.O.D.O.K, Skrull,  She hulk and x23, not that I don´t like those characters (in fact I love most of em), maybe It´s a license thing, who knows!
Anyway, I´m very happy with these additions, specially Ghost rider and red arremer… and I still have high hopes for Punisher.

        • mikanko

Full list has already been leaked.  No Punisher, but get some Dr. Strange hype!  All 6 Marvel characters are quite obscure to the casual goer, with the exception of Ghost Rider, so it’s a bit surprising.

Only disappointment is no new female Marvel characters, but She Hulk was pretty awesome already.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

None of those are in the game, sadly. I wanted Bass.EXE personally

      • KyoyaHibari

Omg…they actually did it, they put in Phoenix Wright…not only am I pissed at the people who kept voting for Phoenix even though it was practically a joke, and he hardly has any abilities whatsoever, but Capcom ACTUALLY WENT THROUGH WITH IT, someone shoot me now…what a waste of a slot, Bass, Date & Jet Black, those 3 specifically would have been great choices for characters, Date would have his crazy 6 sword style and his awesome broken English sayings, Bass would have his chaotic moveset, and Jet Black would be an agile, and also ominous anti-hero with his sweet techniques as well, but we get Frank West (again, we have him in TvC did we need him again?), Phoenix, Vergil (on that note, isn’t Vergil’s outfit a DLC?) and Nemesis which is a decent character, but we already have Chris, Jill and Wesker.

  • Natat

I so didn’t expect Firebrand, and now I am so happy about him being in the game.

  • Soma

While this IS really cool and all, I’m sort of getting sick of Capcom releasing an updated version of their most recent fighting game every year. I’m sure it’s good for business. I’m sure it’s making them a lot of money. However, I’m also sure that’s it’s beginning to frustrate fans who are eagerly awaiting something really NEW.

    • neo_firenze

Wait for Street Fighter vs Tekken and don’t buy this then.  Nobody’s forcing you to buy it, and if you’re sure it’s good for business that must mean there is a significant audience out there who does want updates.

      • Soma

I’m not totally opposed to UMvC3. I’m a big fan and pre-ordered the collector’s edition for the PS3 and even booked the day off work so I could pick it up and go home and play straight away.

But, it’s been less than a year between the release of MvC3 and this announcement for the Ultimate edition. It’s somewhat frustrating for me, a fan and consumer, to discover that a game I bought and REALLY enjoy, will now be outdated a year from release.
This seems to be a growing trend in the industry and it’s starting to bum me out a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited for the game! But, I’m not keen on investing $40+ on an update for a game I already own. If the Ultimate edition will be available as DLC at a lower price for those who already own the game (like with SSFIVAE), then I’m all for that.

    • Thomas Maloney

and then they cancel something their fans actually want =D

  • Nice but my favorite character is already in the game…Phoenix. It will be fun taking her on the new stages.

  • P.S. everyone we *may* be doing an Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 interview in a few hours. This is last minute, but if you want to ask questions here’s your chance!

    • Soma

I think the question on everyone’s mind is if this will be available as DLC or not?

      • what sort of gameplay tweaks will be added?  Why choose the Ultimate name? Will there be additional costumes available on disc or for DLC?

        • neo_firenze

Fairly sure the reason for the “Ultimate” name is a tie in with the Ultimate series of Marvel comics.  I’m not a big comic guy, but even a quick Google search shows me that apparently Marvel are relaunching several “Ultimate” comic lines this year, so this will coincide with that as well:

“In August 2011, Marvel plans to relaunch the Ultimate line again, this time with the Ultimate Comics Universe Reborn tagline after the conclusion of “The Death of Spider-Man” story arc… The initial titles slated to be relaunched are Ultimate Comics: X-Men, Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates, Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, with Ultimate Comics: Fallout and Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye being relaunched as mini-series” (

Note Hawkeye getting his own mini-series, so it makes sense that Marvel is wanting some exposure for that character.

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Plus Hawkeye is in the upcoming Avengers movie, so they want people to become familiar with him (and going back and buying his comics wouldn’t be bad for Marvel either :3)

          • Even the typography/font of “ultimate” is the same. So you are probably right.

    • Aiddon

The big one: DLC or not?

Also, better single-player modes? MvC3 was just DYING for a story mode like Blazblue or Smash Bros Brawl.

      • Already have this one in my list – I knew it would be something people would ask :)

    • KyoyaHibari

What are the last 8 characters? ;P

    • MvC3 released how many months ago for $60? We’re seeing it already made obsolete with a $40 disc and no word of DLC. So I guess my two big questions are:

1.) Is there going to be a DLC option for existing owners? The SSF4 “TOO BIG FOR A DISC” argument was already bull, so I’m hoping they don’t even try that crap here. Capcom is really setting the bar for greed if they expect us to rebuy a product we just picked up at full price five months ago.

2.) PC RELEASE. GIVE US ONE. ;o; (Not quite a question, but I think you see what I’m getting at)

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Will any extra costumes be added for the original characters in Ultimate (the previously released DLC costumes or otherwise)?

What kind of changes are you making to the fighting system?

Did you take into account the results of the massive character poll when choosing which characters to add?

Will this be the final iteration of MvC3?

    • Yesshua

Just a standard question here:  what are the prospects of release on PC, 3DS, Wii U, or Dreamcast?

    • Could you ask if Jill and Shuma will be included in this package?

      • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

The trailer shows both of them, so 99% “yes”

  • TomSkylark

Can I get some compelling, developed, interesting single-player modes, please? Great game, but holy geez did they phone that aspect in. I know it’s not the supposed “point” of fighting games, but plenty of fighting series have really made the single-player experience shine nonetheless.

  • Klaus00

Spencer could you ask if Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be a DLC also and not only disc? And could you maybe also ask which characters have new moves and what moves and/or nerfs, buffs? Thank you so much !

    • mikanko

Seems for sure to only be a disc only as the changes are a lot greater than what SSF4 got to become AE.

The game has a horrible interface and menus, and those in part go with what the biggest problem is with the online.  Besides the whole cast getting balance changes and the in game UI being reworked, I have a feeling there’s just too much be done to apply in a simple patch.

I honestly hope it’s not dlc, because there are too many things I’d like to see fixed in this game, and making it a patch means those things are less likely to happen.

  • LOL, it looks like the 6th leak for vanilla MvC3 is turning to be right!  After all, it mentioned Red Arramer and Strider Hiryu in that leak!

  • RagnaXBL

Lol, i’m glad capcom can at least do one thing right after this whole megaman legends 3 ordeal

    • How is there same formula from the 90’s just now adapted to MvC3 a good thing after they cancelled MML3?

      • RagnaXBL

they gave us strider, thats all that matters right now :D

        • Thomas Maloney

you’re right, they added a character into MvC3 that should have been there in the first place =P

  • AzureNova

Give me Sakura dammit >_< !!!

    • You really want another shoto? I mean if you want to play Sakura that won’t be gimped to hell why not play her in a Street Fighter game?

      • AzureNova

        Because MVC is better.

        • Oh Azure you so silly. What I meant was you really want another version you have to pay for after this just for Sakura?

          • AzureNova

No lol. I WAS hoping for this to be DLC as well, but with their other post they shattered my dreams all in an instant. Sigh, looks like ill have to drop another $40 just so I can burn people to death with my flames from hell.

          • D: That is sad.

  • capristrider

Yes! That news has made my day! Strider Hiryu get your Cypher ready :)

  • Draculoid

I have some questions for you users and if you help me out that would be GREAT. I haven’t dealt with a fighter being updated that I’ve played so just a few basic questions.

    1. Is it a good idea to trade in my copy of MVC 3 before the release of this? How far before? I assume it will be obsolete once this game is released and I’d love to put it towards my purchase of the new version.

    2. The DLC I already bought of Jill and Shuma, are they included in the new version regardless? Did I just waste my money on them or do i get them transferred over somehow?

    Thanks guys !

  • Of course I want this, but no way in hell Capcom gets another cent of mine again.  Can’t wait for used copies to show up!

  • epy

Yep, just as expected. Good thing I didn’t buy it before at full price and now we have a revision with a bunch of new characters for a much lower price. Feel bad for the ones that bought it full price plus DLC but I’m sure most expected this to happen.

Same as Jon, I do not wish to support Capcom but I might pick this up once the price drops and/or when Super Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 Omega Mark X (you read X as Cross btw) is out.

  • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

This just in, someone was looking through the main site’s coding and found the other characters.
    Phoenix Wright
    Frank West
    Doc Strange
    Rocket Raccoon

If you view the profile of one of the characters, you get the image link, you can then substitute in and see that they’re all legit. I’m kind of disappointed but some look fun, like Wright and RR

  • $40 is a value for 12 (14 for some) new toons, but the point remains that Capcom -could- offer it for DLC. The option is there, they’re ignoring it.

EDIT – What the crap? This was supposed to be a reply to a post. O_o

    • fermented

Rumor has it that they originally planned all of this content as DLC, but after recent events in Japan they decided to scrap it and announce it as a whole new game.

      • That’s unfortunate if true. I absolutely love the idea of DLC expansions to existing games. It always has me feeling like i’m getting way more value out of the disc I had already bought. It’s one reason I giggle about every time I put in my Continuum Shift disc, even though i’m playing Continuum Shift 2, mechanics wise. ;P

  • Ace

Remember the good ‘ole days when they put the entire content of the game on the actual disc before shipping it?

    • Champ W

Ah, those longing days were so nostalgic :(

    • AzureNova

      Epic statement. XD

    • epy

I will tell my grandkids how I used to unlock all the content of games by just playing them … and then they will their their mom Grandpa is senile.

No, seriously. I can see this happening. Scary.

  • To be honest, I’m happy I didn’t get this game when it came out… now I’ll have all of them without buying Mircosoft points (cause I think their just a rip-off to buy). And I don’t have to get DLCs…. more space for my hard drive >.>. Just saying. I FEEL BAD FOR THOSE WHO GOT IT! Don’t get me wrong now eh, it sucks hard, but I expected that Capcom would pull a SSIV… cause I got SFIV then BAM! SSFIV and Arcade… Little buggers
