This Week In Sales: Japan Survives Another Devil Invasion

By Ishaan . August 3, 2011 . 3:43pm

Period: The week of Jul 25th – Jul 31st (2011)

Top-seller: Rhythm Heaven – 81,938

Nintendo 3DS sales: 16,415 | Total sales: 1,306,156

No new games in Japan managed to grab the top spot away from Rhythm Heaven last week. The Wii game held onto its #1 spot on the chart for the second week in a row, with nearly another 82,000 copies sold.

Under it at #2 was Queen’s Gate: Spiral Chaos by Namco Bandai, selling close to 67,000 copies on the PSP.

At #3 was Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 (pictured above), sold in Japan without “Shin Megami Tensei” in its name. Devil Survivor 2 sold 63,000 copies. That’s a better debut than its predecessor, which sold 55,466 copies in its first week back in 2009.

Nintendo also announced its Nintendo 3DS price cut last week, which goes into effect on August 11th. As a result, Nintendo 3DS sales dipped well below average. One can probably expect to see low 3DS hardware sales numbers (for this week) in next week’s chart as well, until the price drop’s effect is reflected in the August 18th chart.

  • I’m disappointed by the lack of Hentai no Tamashii’s! QG needs a lot more sales for our souls to combine into the uber awesome mecha HentaiOh OppaiGar!!

    • malek86

Now I’ve got a mental image of your avatar shouting that.

    • Kibbitz

Uh, no thanks, I think we have more than enough perv power around here already, based on the usual responses to QGSC and Senran Kagura, not counting those hiding in the closets. That being said, everytime I see your avatar image, I feel like screaming SURVIVAL STRATEGY TOO.

  • Hraesvelgr

Beaten by Queen’s Gate? You disappoint me, Japan.

    • z_merquise

Man, I mistakenly read your post as “Queen’s Gate was beaten?”. I’m just thinking too much. That or I’m not paying attention.

But hey, lots of people who already played the game said that it was really good. The naughty fan-service parts were more like a bonus.

      • Kibbitz

System is decent-to-good, depending on tastes. However, I don’t think we can honestly say that QGSC is really selling on the strength of its game system as opposed to its content. I would love to be proven wrong though, but I doubt I will be.

    • Darkrise

I can vouch for what z_merquise said, Queen’s Gate IS indeed a good game, the dynamic gameplay is just entertaining and so are some of the characters. The game may be heavy with fanservice but that doesn’t stop it from being fun.

      • SolidusSnake

Yeah I’m sure Queen’s Blade is awesome, but damn, this is Devil Survivor we’re talking about! The original game had one of the best stories out of any JRPG, and knowing Atlus, the sequel should be just as good, if not better. Devil Survivor 2 would definitely be #1 if there were any justice in the world.

        • Kibbitz

I think justice in the world would be busy fixing other more important problems than the relatively minor one of DS2 being outsold by QGSC by a mere 6% or so.

  • RoKKlauser

    Lets Survive. Again. :D

  • Saraneth

Glad to see Devil Survivor 2 is doing better than the original. It deserves the sales.

  • d19xx

Why is it in Japan they localize foreign games despite selling below 50k and some doesn’t even pass 4 digits.

While in the US, even if a game sells over 50k to 100k, sequels, spinoffs are unlikely  to be localized.

Do games cost more to publish outside Japan?

    • Im quite sure several games in the US that did the 50K-100K mark received sequels and spinoffs, the key is budgeting…

    • Aoshi00

They didn’t dub Alice Madness Returns though, so they just subtitled it, instead of doing a thorough localization complete w/ dub like the other bigger titles like Uncharted, Gears, etc..  It’s too bad, I thought it would sell more than that being a gothic take on Alice in Wonderland.. I still need to go back and play the first American McGee game some day..

  • Man, I love seeing all those PSP games in the charts. At least it gets love elsewhere…*sigh*

With the success of Devil Survivor 2, can we expect a Devil Survivor 3?

  • DDanny

Always glad for Atlus games, pity about the abominable boss design though

    • Ren

Don’t worry, that was the exact effect intended :D

  • Darkrise

Glad to see that QG and DS2 are doing well.

  • Lmao nintendo games are the most selled

  • UberNoCrono

Go Go Go Atlus! You guys deserve to kick ass worldwide

  • 4shiki

    No Nichijou: Uchuujin…? :(

  • PrinceHeir

    Devil Survivor :)
