Nintendo of Europe Detail 3DS eShop Games Like Metroid II: Return of Samus

By Ishaan . August 17, 2011 . 7:00am

Nintendo of Europe just revealed more games that will be coming to Nintendo systems during the remainder of the year, including content on the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS. Amongst these are two Gameboy games — Metroid II: Return of Samus and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins — which will be out before the end of the year.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge will also be available on September 15th as a 3DS Virtual Console game, and later in the year, Capcom will release and Bionic Commando (Gameboy). 3D Classics: TwinBee is also due out on September 22nd.

Original 3DS games for the eShop include Mighty Switch Force from WayForward Technologies (coming in autumn), Mutant Mudds from Renegade Kid (December) and Zen Pinball 3D by Zen Studios (sometime this year).

Metroid 2 was never a GameBoy Color game. If they want to upgrade it to GBC, I’d be fine with that!

  • Red9ro

Did the idea of remaking the game never passed through their heads?
Lots of Metroid fans probably missed the game in GB.

Metroid II is just kind of the forgotten middle child of the Metroid games.

Super is long-revered, and Metroid has been rereleased a million times (at one point, I owned it on three different games between two different systems), but Return of Samus never gets much love. A lot of people just skip it when they list the games.

With that kind of legacy, there’s not much of an incentive to remake it.

      • Mario 2 is a step child (not exactly a hated one mind you)
Metroid 2 is a forgotten middle child
Zelda II is the black sheep

What is with me and wanting these games remade? lol  Maybe it is nostalgia or wanting a more modern approach to the gameplay.

Mario 2 USA is the beloved foster child. Mario 2 Japan is the younger brother with a bad attitude.

      • Red9ro

That’s exactly why they should do a remake.

There is a fan remake being made. You can follow his blog here

  • I wish for a Metroid II remake.  The original suffered from the small screen where Samus’ sprite was too big, creating blind jumps and bumping into enemies above you for example.

i just beat it (and played it) for the first time recently. i didn’t have that problem. what it needs is a fucking map, got stuck for 3 hours cuz i didn’t know where i haven’t been yet, then jumped into the pool of acid, and was thankful that the acid levels dropped after killing a few more, to then get stuck again for another 2 hours, to then find out there was a hidden room i missed with 1 metroid to kill to drop the acid levels (again) for a different pool of acid

      • Oh yes, for a game about finding Metroids it would of helped.  I didn’t have that huge of a problem but that’s probably because I used an old Nintendo Power map. lol  Remake should have a map with a X whenever you killed one.

I used the map in the manual <3~

i played it on an emulator (yea yea yea), and when i looked on gamefaqs for a map, it didn’t help. great game. when (if) it releases on the eShop in NA, i’m definitely buying it (hate using roms for games i can buy instead, makes me feel guilty)

Mighty Switch Force looks pretty cool.

      yup2 :)

i just wish nintendo would fix their eshop a little more convenient and friendly. i mean i have to search each page one by one just to find my game of choice or looking for something new.

  • capristrider

Mighty Switch Force looks awesome and it reminds me of Treasure’s Gunstar Heroes

  • My jaw dropped when I saw my legendary game Metriod II Return of Samus. For a while 3 seconds, I considered actually getting a 3ds lol. Then the feelings passed and remember I can just use an emulator and save money lol.

  • Göran Isacson

… Eh, think I’m more intrigued by Mighty Switch Force than Metroid 2. What can I say- I’m a run and gunner-boy at heart.

  • I guess rumors saying Pokemon Emerald would be on the eshop are not coming to fruition, as I cant imagine something as big as that wouldnt be mentioned.

    • None of the Ambassador games are mentioned.

  • aw man remake metroid 2
or make it go 3d like excitebike.

    • lostinblue

Or make it go super like metroid 3 (super metroid) :D

    • dragoon_slayer12

really, i would prefer them to remake 2 to look like Super Metroid/Fusion/Zero Mission, or do an all out remake and make it a 3d side scroller, detailed as hell with either Other M caliber graphics, or cell shaded like wild arms 3 (the sketch details can give it a different kind of life).

really, i would love a full 3d remake of super metroid, same gameplay, then add a fps mode to unlock after beating it.

  • Metroid 2 -and- Six Golden Coins? Man, the 3DS VC keeps getting better and better! :D

Now here’s to hoping we start seeing some support on it for non-Nintendo games, like the Wii VC!

  • Suicunesol

Ah… Metroid II. Both Metroid II and Super Mario Land 2 were the last two games I got for my yellow Game Boy pocket back when I was a youngin. I had no idea what Metroid was when I got it; I just got it because it had cool box-art. It ended up being a rather difficult platformer with the plot only outlined in the manual. Being all exploration and survival, the game was quite scary and thus captured the atmosphere of Metroid games well. Of course, that’s also why I stopped playing midway. x_x

A remake could happen. However, there’s next to nothing in the plot of Metroid II until the very end. And I don’t think games like that are received very well by the gamers of today. Any ‘good’ remake of Metroid II would have be a complete overhaul.
