We’re Fishing For Questions For Prope’s CEO Yuji Naka

By Spencer . September 11, 2011 . 10:30am

Were Fishing For Questions For Propes CEO Yuji NakaHe’s one of the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog and made a Wii game penguins can play. We’re talking about Yuji Naka and here’s your chance to ask him questions about Fishing Resort and his thoughts on the industry, but please no Rodea: The Sky Soldier questions this time around.

Anything else about Prope including his past titles like Ivy the Kiwi? and Let’s Tap should be fine. I’ll be right back with my notepad…

Ask him what’s the biggest fish he’s ever caught.

Maybe his opinion on the new generation of handhelds? Like, which he believes has more potential, or which he’d rather work with, 3DS or PS Vita.

    *Side Note: Yuji Naka!! Awesomeness!*

Second on his opinion of the handhelds~.

An update on Rodea the Sky Soldier would be nice

  • Wackoramaco87

Where did he come up with the idea for the game? Did he make a lot of fishing trips for “research”? =D

And this is really for anyone who knows- what makes this game better (excluding the georgous visuals!) then the other fishing game(s)? out there?

I’ll field that second one! ;)

The biggest selling point of Fishing Resort, I think, is the freedom you have to do pretty much whatever you want. You can go exploring the island, take goofy quests from NPCs, go on scavenger hunts, participate in contests, ride around on bicycles and kayaks and such, buy all sort of crazy new clothes, tour (and upgrade) an enormous aquarium… and anywhere there’s water (save for the swimming pool in the first hotel, anyway!), you can cast a line and try fishing, with your catches varying based on where you fish, what type of rod/reel/bait you’re using, and even WHEN you fish.

It almost feels like a light-hearted, open-ended RPG, but with fishing instead of battle scenes. It’s just a really relaxing, fun sort of game that has as much appeal for fans of Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, etc. as it does for fans of fishing.

(/Sales pitch. But seriously, I’ve never been fishing in my life and have no interest whatsoever in fishing, but even I found myself getting pretty hooked on this game during QA. Pun intended.)

I would probably feel bad buying it to not fish. lol
I tend to dislike fishing in games, but your pitch was very convincing thanks.

Did Prope get a dev kit for the WiiU? If so, what do he and the company think so far? If not, what does he think of the WiiU and what does he see for the future of (home) consoles? At this point in time and for what he sees of the future, would he prefer to work with portable over home consoles?

What kind of things influenced the development of Fishing Resort?

    1.  Since Let’s Tap in 2008 to the upcoming Rodea, how as the market been treating you?  Has your view on the industry changed since?

    2. What’s the biggest hurdle for creating casual games and staying on top of this side of gaming?

Ask if he plans on putting Rodea on Wii U, the silence on the game is very telling and I suspect that is indeed his plan.

Also ask if he plans on reviving his Sonic-like action game somehow, and ask if it was 2D or 3D ala Sonic Adventure.

Edit: Oh, didn’t read the post fully, so forget the Rodea question then. :(

Just ask about the Wii U (as another fellow below did :) ), and about that Sonic-like action game.

I guess he asked you specifically to not accept questions on Rodea, telling. :)

Actually, I’ve always wondered if he’d like to team up with Ohshima on a new mascot again, he’s now at Arzest. Though they had a slight tussle during Wii Play: Motion’s development so I guess they wouldn’t be working together in the future. :(

So a question, What is your opinion of the gaming market today? What are the trends, fads… what is the good, bad, and ugly in gaming development today? Both in the traditional market and the “mobile” (and by that I mean iOS/WP7/Android and Social networks) market.

    Thank you.

Have any of the games in Let’s Tap become more popular than you had expected?  Have any gotten popular to the point where you’d consider turning it into its own seperate game?

Is Ivy the Kiwi herself a character you would like to use in more games, or are you trying to not create another Sonic-like mascot for Prope?

I’d like to know why they declined to add MotionPlus support for this title, especially in light of the fact that Prope was one of the contributors to Wii Play Motion; surely M+ should be an imperative for a game released this late in the Wii’s life, given that the imprecise nature of the standard Wii Remote no longer appeals to many people? It can’t be that hard to implement, can it?

I’d also like to know what he thinks of the current dev environments/SDKs for the current platforms, and how they could be best improved for upcoming platforms like Vita. (I’d also be interested to find out whether he’s been coding anything himself recently – Yu Suzuki has, don’t wanna be outdone, do ya Naka?)

When you see the mess that the Sonic franchise has become, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

Is Fishing Resort is another manifestation of Mario Tennis, Golf in GBA (sport game with RPG story)? Do you have a rival or goal in Fishing Resort? Will I got experience or skill points after each fishing?

    are these questions legit?

Will you push Nintendo to improve their localization process?

  • TheKKM

1- Would Prope be willing to work again with Sonic Team through a 3rd party connection, like Backbone Entertainment did?

2- Considering Mr.Naka’s well-known love for fast cars, why not a Prope racing game? I’m certain that with the imagination the studio’s been showing, it’d be something amazing.

  • TheKKM

Also, what is his opinion, as a developer, of the Legends 3 cancellation and subsequent fan reaction?
