DotEmu, a French publisher focused on reviving retro games, have released the original R-Type for Android devices today. The game was originally released by Irem for arcades, the Amiga, Atari, Commodore 64 and other systems in 1987.

The Android version of the game has been fitted with a new touch-control system and retains the features of the original game. It also allows you to share results over OpenFeint, and is also “officially optimized” for Sony’s Xperia Play.

R-Type is compatible with OS 2.1+ devices with a screen resolution of 480×320 and greater. Officially supported devices include Samsung Galaxy S / Google Nexus S, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab, among others.
