Final Fantasy XIV Is Only About 50% Done Regarding Content, Says Producer

Final Fantasy XIV producer, Naoki Yoshida, recently answered a number of player questions via a live “Letter from the Producer” event on YouTube, which is now documented in text on the game’s Twitter feed. You can find the list of questions along with answers below:

Q: Will you make it possible to remember the set actions when switching classes?

A: In an interview the other day I mentioned it would be during 1.19, but it seems like it just barely wont make it and it is planned for 1.19a.

Q: When will the map will be renewed for XIV? I’ve been waiting for long time…

A: We’ll answer in next live event we hold! However, let me show you something as we are on Live. This is the dev. document about Gridania. As you can see, it’s a very major change! In any case, let me give you more details in the next live event!

Q: Hi Yoshi-p! I am a culinarian, please let me know what the planned timing for the food effects and your current thoughts on the class!

A: Planning for 1.20 or 1.21. If the effects get a bit too high, we will be focusing on a specific recipe and will be thinking in a bit different direction. Once we decide the specifics we will let you know.

Q: On the upper left of the white board, there is a highlander female, Miqo’te male of course, but are there going to be any other races added?

A: Once we add the aspects that are missing, we will consider the costs and look into adding more.

Q: When do you think you will be able to revamp the linkshell system?

A: We have been receiving a lot of feedback regarding the linkshell system. We will try our hardest to get this out as soon as possible. We are actually having a meeting today to discuss how we can improve the system!

Q: In FF series, ancient spells are ultimate spells. In FFXIV, they’re not. Will it be adjusted later?

A: In 1.20, there will be major action and magic spell changes. I am thinking about adjusting this in there. Look forward to that change!

Q: Do you have any plans of implementing an efficient and easy-to-use party formation feature? Currently, everyone is shouting in town and it takes quite some time to efficiently form a party…

A: This is a very important topic for us and we are currently looking into creating a system where it is much easier to form parties.

Q: How do you determine which monsters are huge and which ones stay small?

A: We base it on how we feel the monster should be seen by players. Intimidating or not, etc.

‎‎Q: Does Yoshi-P play as a Miqo’te or Lalafell, or Roegadyn?

A: I typically always play a Lalafell!

Q: It looks like the game is on the way of becoming another FFXI. Is this intentional?

A: We received a lot of similar feedback when we implemented the auto-attack system. No, we are not intentionally trying to make the game similar to FFXI. We just wanted the players to be able to play the game at an easier pace.

Q: Could you tell us all of the jobs that are going to be released in 1.21?

A: There is one job that has yet to be announced… What we have announced so far is paladin, white mage, black mage, dragoon, monk, and bard. Last, here is a warrior image! (Note: It appears this was only displayed during the live video)

Q: Hello. I started playing after release, but I quit after hitting rank 30. I plan to come back. In your eyes, what do you think is the main feature of the game in its current state? It would help a lot if you can clear that up for players that are planning to return to the game.

A: It’s hard to say in its current state. We are only about 50% done regarding content. However, if we are talking about 1.19, I would have to say chocobos and Ifrit will be the main content. Everyone should get that FF-feeling with this content.

Q: Will you be able to attach materia to equipment created via the old recipes?

A: We will not be allowing materia craft to be used in conjunction with the old equipment. Apologies for this.

Q: How will you earn spiritbond points for Materia Craft? Will it be based on the number of hits? Parties you’re in? When does it reach 100%?

A: Spiritbond will increase when you earn experience points.

Q: We have seen Ifrit weapons. Are there any plans to implement Ifrit armor in the future?

A: The Ifrit weapons are heavily focused on Ifrit’s horns. I wanted to implement weapons with special effects so we will only implement weapons this time. However, we are currently in the process of creating new armor (job specific armor, crafter specific armor, etc.) for the upcoming content. Stay tuned!

Q: Will you be adding chocobo animations while on chocoback? Like waving while riding?

A: Currently we don’t have any plans for this, but if there are a lot of requests, we will look into it.

Q: I understand that the chocobos implemented now are male. Will there be a female chocobo?

A: Chocobos are heavily connected with Ishgard and come only from their at the moment. In order to maintain their exclusivity, currently only male chocobos are being given out to the rest of the city-states. Also when you name Chocobo, you might want to name them male-type names!

Q: As a gamepad user, I find it difficult to scroll through the list of actions. Are there any plans to update the interface?

A: We will be working on updating the user interface not only for the gamepad, but for the keyboard/mouse users as well. Please be sure to provide us with your feedback.

Q: PvP has often been touched on, but exactly what kind of elements are you thinking to add?

A: First off, we are designing it so that players that do not wish to take part in PvP are not forced to. We are planning 2 things for PvP. The first are battles in the Coliseum. The second is an PvP area where you can fight for control of various influences.

Q: What is the hardest part of this past year for you? And what is the happiest thing that happened in the past year?

A: Many hard things! (lol) My very first month after the change was the hardest. However, my happiest moment is when you, players cheer me on! Thank you so much! :)

Q: When you rank up in Grand Companies, what kind of good things will happen? Also, please tell us some of the rank names.

A: First, you will be recognized on the Grand Company Lodestone page! Also many good things will happen such as an increase in the number of company seals you can obtain. Give it a shot in 1.19!

Q: Are there any plans on improving the pugilist class?

A: You should see for yourself in patch 1.19!

Q: Why do we lose everything including gear when failing the ‘forbidden’ material craft? It seems like too harsh of a penalty!

A: Yes, the penalty is big. When you get all seven equipment slots set with 1 materia each, you will be very strong. If you want to be stronger, there must be a risk associated with it. Feedback on this will be welcome though.

Q: Can you give some pointers for beating ifrit?

A: The normal mode is pretty easy to beat. However, the hyper mode is going to be very difficult. You’ll feel the true power of a "god" in that fight! Multiple stages… horns… I’ve said too much already!

Q: What kind of other mounts will there be aside from chocobos in the future?

A: When we did a survey on the forums, we received a lot of requests for "Magitek Armor" as an example. Things like that will be a good reference going forward!

Q: Will we have the chance of meeting the leaders of the Grand Companies soon? What about the NPCs that appear in the main scenario?

A: You’ll get a chance to meet the NPCs that appear in the main scenario very soon. Also, there’s an ongoing event that the GC leaders are involved in. You’ll have the chance of meeting the leaders of each GC as well. Stay tuned!

Q: Do the developers think the rate in which players completed Dzemael was fast? Slow?

A: The community team predicted the first clear would be after about 8 hours. I predicted 3 days and it turned out it was pretty much that. So I think it’s just right. Ifrit is even harder, so good luck!

Q: After the claiming system change in patch 1.19, I’m afraid everyone will be power leveling each other. What do you think of this?

A: It depends on what you consider power leveling. I just want to make sure friends are able to help each other if they want to challenge content together.

Q: I hear rumors about moon phase or the direction you face giving special effects to crafting. What’s the truth?

A: I know it’s talked about in forum, too. Hmm. Maybe some things are better to be left unanswered.

Q: On the Lodestone, level 51-60 recipes were posted. What is the meaning of this? Will the level cap be lifted?

A: Whether the cap will be lifted is a separate question. We posted these recipes to show off some new items as well as the necessity for equipment for high level and crafts that level 50 players can gain experience from.

Q: Can you tell us about the new class system?

A: For the class adjustments, we are planning to have every class possess their own identity. Also, actions with multiple elements and facets to them. In regards to jobs, you will be able to take on job quests from level 30+, and once you complete those will you will be able to use those jobs.

Q: Will you be able to convert equipment crafted with old recipes into materia?

A: Yes. The old recipes will disappear from the game, so convert all your beloved gear into materia and add it to the new equipment.

Q: Which Grand Company should I join? As the equipment rewards are different, I am having a hard time deciding.

A: There will be more chances to earn company seals coming and grand company balance overall will be adjusted. So don’t worry too much about rewards. You should pick the grand company you think is a good fit for you. Also we will not make changes in a way that friends in different grand companies can’t play together.

Q: Will there be a delivery system?

A: We will definitely be implementing a delivery system. Unfortunately, it’s something that is going to take time and I am unable to provide a date for that just yet.

Q: Do you have plans to add mandragora into Eorzea?

A: I will ask the character team if they can add it to their list!

Q: When do you think the cool/sexy looking gear will be implemented?

A: We are currently in the process of working out the details. I want to be sure the class gear is implemented first. We will try to implement the cool/sexy looking gear by 1.22 or 1.23.

Q: Is there any information you can provide regarding the impending doom of Eorzea?

A: Out of the 4 keywords that I provided earlier in the year (FUN, LIVE, REBOOT, REBUILD), the keyword “LIVE” will have a huge impact for this event. You’ll notice many changes that will occur in the world of Eorzea. I would like you see the changes for yourself in patch 1.19 and then use your imagination for what’s to come.

Another live Q&A event will be held in the near future, although Square Enix haven’t explicitly stated when, so far. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Very interesting interview.  I wish him the best.  This is going to turn out to be a great MMO, but it’ll probably take another year, which isn’t a huge deal.  I didn’t even start XI until they were on their 3rd full expansion, and I still played it for years.

  • http://twitter.com/Paradox_me Paradox me

I like the sound of some of the changes they’ve been making, but my interest in the game has died down considerably since its release. I’m afraid that by the time it’s in a state that I’d enjoy playing my attention will have shifted entirely.

However, I still wanna pick it up just to admire its beauty. Why can’t we get a singleplayer Final Fantasy game with an art direction like this? Visually, it’s the most appealing Final Fantasy since IX.

  • kazekage

I never liked mmos. But i really wanna believe that when this hits the ps3 its gonna be good.

    • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

Same here! Of course, I’m just hoping the PS3 version comes out AT ALL. There’s been no news of a release date for any region, to my knowledge.

I kind of have to get the PS3 version, since my PCs can’t handle that kind of beauty in any form.

      • Syltique

I’m pretty sure it’ll come out.  They’ll get to where he feels it’s at 100%, and then they get a 2nd chance to make a good impression.  If nothing else, it will still be significant in Japan.

          I hope you’re right! :)

      MMO’s that look good:

      The Old Republic
      Guild Wars II
      Vindictus

      thats it

Just what i was looking for since i gotten ancient magic on my conjurer. it was to weak the effect of the animation and FFXI was  by far the best but am glad someone ask this….

Q: In FF series, ancient spells are ultimate spells. In FFXIV, they’re not. Will it be adjusted later?A: In 1.20, there will be major action and magic spell changes. I am thinking about adjusting this in there. Look forward to that change!

1 reasion am a blm and sch in FFXI is the black magic!! ftw.

  • neo_firenze

So much revamping still left to do to get this game to be fun.  Yoshida’s team is working hard, but I can’t help but feel that it would have been better to let that seemingly skilled team work on a new game instead of being tied to the disastrous original form of FFXIV.  They’re never going to convince enough people to come back to XIV after the awful reputation it so rightly earned.

And let’s not kid ourselves, he’s politely avoiding the fact that the good aspects ARE indeed copying from the successes of FFXI.  XIV has some of its own identity too, but the changes to the job system, auto-attack, food effects, attempts to improve the party/search functions… All of those are heavily based on FFXI, as they rightly SHOULD have been from the beginning if not for Tanaka’s team (the original dev team who was removed) being stubborn and ignoring FFXI in an attempt to be different solely for the sake of being different.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I think the problem at this point is, if you don’t fix the game, then what do you say to all those people that bought Final Fantasy XIV and are now stuck with a bad game that doesn’t work as intended?

Eventually profiting from FFXIV is something they hope to do in time, of course, but I also think what they’re trying to do here is not lose their consumers’ faith. It’s a question of their reputation at this point.

      • http://twitter.com/Paradox_me Paradox me

They’ve got quite a bit of work ahead of ‘em if they’re to repair their reputation. Whether or not I feel it’s justified, their image is in the gutter.

Unfortunately fixing Final Fantasy XIV won’t do much to change that in the eyes of anyone but XIV players.

      • neo_firenze

They’ve already long passed the point of tarnishing their reputation with FFXIV and losing people’s faith.  Sometimes a bad game gets released, and the people who do play it now have been able to do so with no monthly fees for a year now.  Gotta cut your losses somewhere though and stop dumping money into a black hole.

I wanted XIV to succeed as much as anyone.  I’ve been a constant FFXI subscriber since 2004, and bought XIV on day 1.  And I would rather have them scrap the fundamentally broken FFXIV and cut their losses, and put this seemingly talented team to work on a NEW game.  They can reuse the same engine, but trying to cobble together a fix for XIV when it has such massive existing baggage seems like a nearly impossible task that Yoshi P and his team have been given.  I think it’s definitely harder to fix XIV than it would be to make a new better MMO, so if the current dev team does pull it off, massive kudos to them.

I don’t think they will be able to pull it off though, which is not at all an insult to the team working on the game now.  They’ve been put in a nearly impossible position.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

And the game was only about 5% done on release in terms of stability.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leon-Hart/100002316814779 Leon Hart

more like 20% to be right. i was on beta.

  • godmars

Which is sad, considering that the game is already out…

    • http://www.facebook.com/emory.highwind Emory Highwind

sad? the looks really good now :)

      • JustThisOne

It’s looking better, but it’s still kind of sad because they should’ve really taken the time to iron these things out. Maybe they should’ve made an extra long closed beta testing or something instead. Right now, it seems like this whole THING was just a giant beta test.

        Anyway, I just find it hilarious. When I saw 50%, I lol’D.

But hey, at least they’re trying to fix it, and they’re working hard. I commend them. :) That’s good.

  • Guest

    Just one question:

Will this game ever work properly?

  • Exand

    I’ve lost my faith.

I was in head-first from early closed beta and was really looking forward to FFXIV. I even bought the CE knowing that the game was going to launch horribly (anyone who wasn’t blind could tell from the way open beta ended).

I like a lot of the things Yoshi-P is heading towards, but the entire problem with FFXIV isn’t that it’s lacking content or needs a surface re-finishing, it needs to be completely torn down and redone from the ground up. It’s entire core base is rotten.

The game’s UI still lags and is horribly clunky for a year-old PC game. In many ways it’s worse than FFXI’s, which is mind-boggling.

The combat system doesn’t need adjusting, it needs to be ripped up and re-thought, much like how FFXIII’s combat system was redone from previous FF’s. The auto-attack is downright useless and is even a hindrance because it’s not implemented the way a typical auto-attack would be implemented (due to the crappy combat system).

The class system isn’t going to get better by adding new classes or adjusting their skill sets, the entire mix and match system needs to be re-thought and the whole class architecture needs to be changed so classes actually mean something.

All these changes Yoshi-P talks about look nice, but trying to build on a broken foundation is going to come back and implode on them eventually. And I don’t want to be a part of that, and I think it’s unfair for Yoshi-P to be handed such a monumental task of fixing what’s broken beyond repair.

SE needs to close it down and hand Yoshi-P a clean slate so he can work from the ground up instead of trying to fix his predecessors royal screw-up. He’s got some great ideas and knows his MMO’s, something (again) his predecessor did not have.

    • neo_firenze

Didn’t see your post when I made a very similar reply to Ishaan, but you’re dead on and obviously have some experience with XIV.  Agree 100% with every word you said.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leon-Hart/100002316814779 Leon Hart

FFXIV was lunch horribly, but i know yoshi must be going thru hell and what not but it will eventually improve and be as good as FFXI wased because it was kinda the same with beta on FFXI.

if there was no hope in XIV, they would have gone down and stop putting more time,to improve it.

    • Trotmeister

I agree on all points. Lack of content is not the biggest issue, the game is fundamentally flawed.

  • darkfox1

    Didn’t this game…..already come out….?

  • Yesshua

Well, there’s some good stuff in here.  All of the biggest problems people ask about are things the development team already knows about and are working on.  The developers and the players are on the same page, and the developers are being wonderfully transparent about their priorities and schedule.

There’s also bad stuff here.  Specifically, why is this taking so long?  The developers know what the problems are, but there’s just so MUCH that fixing it is taking way too long.  This is not the fault of the development team, this is the fault of the publisher.  Square-Enix should be throwing money at this project, it’s important.  Hire more workers for the team.  Increase overtime pay.  Do SOMETHING!  The FF brand name is at stake here, and this game is not yet a lost cause.  If you can catch just a core community who will stick with the game for years to come then it can be profitable eventually.  But to do that you need to catch that community right now!  Other MMO’s are on the horizon that will appeal to your same demographic.  Get your hooks into as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

So go ahead Square, your move.

Nothing about the PS3 version, dammit.

  • Gatchaman1

They shouldnt have rushed it to begin with. Versus XIII isnt even out and we have XIV, and a sequel to XIII? And then he says the game is 50% done? crazy

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leon-Hart/100002316814779 Leon Hart

Am sure SE know’s what there doing and why there taking there sweet time on Versus. they know that’s what the public wants more then the rest.

Versus to SE is gold and it will be the last game to be release. am sure of it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

semi-related, it is so ridiculous to me that people still try and say that Versus is vaporware, even though its ridiculously hyped.  Even if they didn’t have anything to show for Versus, it wouldn’t make any sense not to capitalize on that hype eventually.  It’s one of their most hyped projects ever, up there with KH1, FFX, maybe even FF7

  • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

It’s getting there.  Once they flesh out the job systems, get some more cool gear, more dungeons and quests, and more replayability (pvp and stuff) I can easily see myself coming back to this when I have more time and can get my gf and maybe some friends to play with me or something. They do need to speed it up though, it’s been a year, and while they’ve made some good progress, there is so much more that needs to be done

I’ve said it before, but when SE thinks its good enough to pay for, is probably when it will be worth it for me to play, and I’ll go back and try it out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

I lost hope on this one , first it looks cool
    But then …
I think they should make it a single player game with online as an optional multiplayer

  • http://gamecheatstricks.com Aiden Anderson

I love the FFXIV concept but Exand said it all. If they sutted the hole thing off for a couple of months and made serious core changes this game would be a mega it like in the square’s golden days.

all i want is a new Monster HUnter MMO(Open World), Phantasy Star Online 2, and hopefully a proper FF Online this time
