What Do Capcom Expect From Monster Hunter 3G And Street Fighter X Tekken?

We’ll get to that in a second. First, let’s take a look at how some of the major games Capcom  released in first half of their fiscal year did:

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. – 450,000 (Japan)

Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition – 400,000 (Worldwide)

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D – 400,000 (Worldwide)

Now, let’s move on to sales expectations for big games coming this year and next:

Monster Hunter 3G – 1.2 million expected (Japan)

Dragon’s Dogma – 1.5 million expected (Worldwide, early 2012)

Street Fighter X Tekken – 2 million expected (Worldwide, March 2012)

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City – 2 million expected (Worldwide, early 2012)

I expect a lot of dissapointed businessmen.

    • No9

The line-up looks pretty solid so I don’t think they’ll have too much problems. Only game that is kinda iffy is Dragon’s Dogma.

      • mikanko

I think 2 million for Operation Socom city seems  reaching.  All of the demos they’ve had for that game just look like a clunky mess, and I’ll be surprised if its received well.  Sales will mostly stem from the RE name.

They also have pretty high expectations for DmC if I recall.

Yup that’s true and i’m not sure why they think DmC will get high expectations….then again some people wouldn’t have pick it up if it wasn’t for the name, but too many fans

        • PrinceHeir

that’s why they have DMC Collection to cope for in case the game bombs :P

  • BGMcDF

At this point, I commit to buying one of those titles. Another I’m on the fence about.

    “1.2 Million for MH3G”
Yeah, that’s about right, for a next-gen game that doesn’t have wifi play

    • James Beatty

Online doesn’t matter in japan. It will sell regardless of online in japan. They are adding enough content to warrent a purchase.

I don’t think Operation Raccoon City will sell that well. The buzz has been pretty bad on it so far – hardcore gamers are still wary of Slant Six after Socom Confrontation. Not to mention, it just looks like a generic online shooter. Granted, that doesn’t stop a ton of other zombie games from selling over a million units. *sigh*

And man, how come Monster Hunter 3rd HD hasn’t sold a million yet? Thought Japan loves that franchise? Do they only like it on handhelds? That’s racist against HD consoles :)

    • Exkaiser

Yep. They only like it on handhelds!

When 5 million already own the game. There is really no reason to buy it again just because it’s HD. It even uses the same AD Hoc Party online system.  So the only reason to really buy it again. Is if you want to play it on your TV, with a controller in HD. For Western gamers this matter, but not to them.

Exact same game as the PSP version. Doesn’t even have trophies if people were curious on that one. If it was a new title then I’m quite sure it would have sold far more.

  • epy

Dragon Dogma most likely won’t reach it. It will be interesting to see whether Street Fighter X Tekken makes it, when everyone knows they’re just going to release a lower priced update in about 6 months. People will get tired of that business model, if it will happen with this title, the next or even in the next few years remains to be seen.

i’m definitely picking up Street Fighter x Tekken and Dragon’s Dogma on the first day, so you can go ahead and count it

  • http://twitter.com/atmey Atmey

The games that are listed first are ports/spin-offs/add-ons, shouldn’t be counted as full games.

    • Guest

How are they not full games?

      • http://twitter.com/atmey Atmey

Because there is an earlier version of the game, combine both versions sales then compare it to the expectation.

…so MonHun 3G isn’t going to be released outside of Japan?  The other 2 games on the list have worldwide projections.

    • http://www.themogblog.com/ Edward Walton

The other titles are simultaneous releases. Monster Hunter on the other hand is not.

I think that’s high for 3G. The 3DS install base is still small. I’m looking forward to the doom articles when 3G doesn’t sell as well as P3rd despite the huge difference in the install base.

    • http://www.themogblog.com/ Edward Walton

Man, Monster Hunter will make sure that they will sell 3DS products. Its a sure-fire catapult to a jump in hardware sales.

Capcom, I love ya, but don’t you guys think that all of you are expecting a liiiiiiiiiiiiittle too much? ._.

  • Gatchaman1

Those are some pretty bold predictions…

  • http://twitter.com/StizzyStrawHat Stizzy Straw Hat

I don’t know about that, I’m going to be one of the projected two million that’s picking up SF x T.

sfxtk will get that 2 million for sure but idk about dragon’s dogma getting 1.5 I say just alittle under 1 million

I like the implication that Monster Hunter 3G is terribly flawed on 3DS because of no online play.  You all know that except for the Wii version, that’s the norm.  You play with people close by on the portables, not over the internet.

“DAMN 3DS SUCKS!  MONSTER HUNTER DOESN’T DO ONLINE!  NOT LIKE THE PSP VERSION! (um…..)”

    • Joanna

I’m usually the first to get annoyed at unfair accusations (often double standards) against Nintendo hardware, software, and the company in general, but to be fair, I don’t recall anyone saying “not like the PSP version.” I think perhaps people were a little too optimistic about the possibility of online given Tri had it and 3DS is a new portable (supposedly a portable Wii).

  • Kitestwinblades

Numbers seem about right too me. A lot of theses will sell off popularity alone.

I’d switch the number of dragon’s dogma and monster hunter though. online play or not, people will do what they have to master Monster Hunter. Dogma numbers will rise once a good word gets out on it. Resident evil, regardless of what route they’re taking, is gonna sell like hot cakes. Fighting games are sooo popular these days that i couldn’t imagine SFxTK NOT selling that much. Heck they practically have my money on that one.

Understand the fact that Portable 3rd sold above 5 million copies. There are only 18 million PSP owners in Japan. That means around 27% of them bought the game.
There are currently all most 3 million 3DS in Japan. So suggesting they will sale to half of that audience is a smart, and bold estimate. 3G success depends on how much new content is in the game. If it’s worth buying a new system just for this one game. Some fans might, but if you take the Portable 3rd HD sells for far. The will not by the same game with little to no new content. They need to show more new stuff besides the subspecies, and Lead Monster. The smart move is that Nintendo has at least 4 other games. You can buy if you want to get a 3DS for Tri G. Mario 3D, Kart 7, New Love Plus, and SD Gundam. I would by a 3DS knowing I can also pick up those same games at the same time.

  • http://twitter.com/ZEROthe1st ZEROthefirst

While I can see 3G really boosting sales for the 3DS in general I don’t see it selling that well. I could be wrong but I honestly think that Capcom’s setting their expectations for 3G a bit high right now.
