Period: The week of November 7th – November 13th (2011)

Top-seller: Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend – 184,673

Nintendo 3DS sales: 103,962 | Total sales: 2,460,877

This Week In Sales: Project Diva Extends Into Japan Along With Peace Walker HD

Last week’s top-seller in Japan was Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend. No surprises there, whatsoever. Project Diva Extend sold 184,673 copies in its first week, putting it in between both its PSP predecessors. First week sales for those games were as follows:

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva (2009) – 101,414

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd (2010) – 241,467

Keep in mind that Extend was once called “Project Diva 2.5,” and is more of a “best hits” expansion than an actual third game, so comparing it to a brand new game like Project Diva 2nd — which had a load of new songs and features — wouldn’t be fair.

Meanwhile, Super Mario 3D Land slipped from #1 to the #4 spot last week. I was a little alarmed by the large drop in sales from the week prior when it was released, so I looked up data for Super Mario Galaxy 2, in order to have something to compare it to.

Super Mario Galaxy – Week 1: 339,901 | Week 2: 105,149 (69% drop)

Super Mario 3D Land – Week 1: 343,492 | Week 2: 93,441 (73% drop)

While 3D Land has in fact suffered a larger drop in its second week, two things to keep in mind are that total 3DS sales are nowhere near those of the Wii in 2010, and that the holiday season is right around the corner, which bodes well for popular titles like Mario and for the 3DS itself. We’ll probably be seeing this game on the charts for many weeks to come.

Finally, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition came and went without many people noticing. We suspect the HD versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 will do better. PokéPark 2: Beyond the World didn’t make much of a splash either, but again, Pokémon is one of those things that could benefit greatly from the holidays.

Finally, Cave’s Instant Brain was released last week as well, and failed to chart in the top 20. The full top 20 list for last week is as follows:

It looks like it may be a close call for Nintendo 3DS to reach 3.5mln units by the end of this year. I had expected Super Mario 3D Land to keep sales of hard up at  no less than 143K, at 157K needed for the remaining weeks this year it will be tough. Hopefully 3DS can continue to go on an upward trajectory and change industry opinion on their being a decreasing worldwide market for dedicated handheld software.

Though I cant believe Naruto Shippuden dropped off the chart, especially when the manga and the anime has become quite epic with the bombs Kishimoto has dropped.

  • malek86

I thought we would start seeing the holiday effect already, but other than the 3DS holding up, every other console is quite flat, if not even down. Maybe in the next couple weeks.

  • icecoffemix

Do PJD 1 and 2nd figures include PSN sales? since afaik Extend hasn’t been released yet on PSN.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

No, none of these figures include PSN sales. All from Media-Create, and they don’t track PSN or Amazon sales, as far as I can tell.

  • cdfl226

Sweet. Now I have some questions…
    a) If I buy Extend, is there any need to buy 2nd?
    b) Was there an “Extend” version of the first game?

Can’t wait to import both, so last question, a good place to buy JP games? I only know PlayAsia, but Ive heard that, due to them being physically located in China, customs will rape my wallet, so is there a good store (in English) located in Japan to buy these?
    Thanks in advance.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Extend has a lot of songs from 2nd, but not all. And no, the first game didn’t have an “Extend” version. Extend contains a few songs from the first PJD, too, as well as some new ones. It’s like a “best hits” compilation with a few new songs.

As for imports… You could try NCSX, but I’m not sure where they’re located. There’s also Amiami.jp, but it’s in Japanese. I think Google Translate should do an OK job of helping you figure the different sections out, though? They have a search just like every other store, so that helps narrow it down.

      • superdry

NCSX is located in NYC.  The other two major importers in the US are Japanvideogames and Videogamesnewyork.  I don’t know how any of them handle overseas shipping though.

Amiami has an English side to their site (just search for amiami in google).  Depending on where you live, they do offer SAL shipping which sometimes scoots under the radar of customs.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

          Ah, NYC… I see. Thanks!

      • D K

Of the 36 songs in Extend, 19 are brand new.  Quite a few more aren’t really new but were only released before as DLC.

Calling it a “best hits” compilation is misleading.  It’s mostly new content.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

How is it new content if those songs were released in previous games? They were DLC, sure, but they’re still considered part of the first two games. Let’s just agree to disagree here.

          • http://www.starcreator.com/ StarCreator

Are you counting the songs that were originally released in the Okawari packs for the first game?  The Okawari packs were really, really limited since they were made using the first game’s rather primitive edit system.  Those songs have been redone to the point that they might as well be completely new now.

    • http://twitter.com/KeionKirby HoshiKirby

There’s also CDJapan that ship games from Japan. Although, I’ve yet purchased a game there, but I do import CD and never had problem with them.

  • Hendra Susanto

Over My Dead Body! A PSP RPG that sold 94 thousand copies in a week! That surely will go to US now, won’t it?

    • kroufonz

scej jrpg on psp coming to the west?

maybe europe have a little chance, and no chance scea will bring it to NA (scea didn’t even bother to bring 2 scej ps3 rpg to america (demon soul and wkc2) there is just no way they even care about psp rpg)

    • D K

Plenty of PSP RPGs have sold dramatically more than that without being localized…

The PSP is dead here.  Just accept it.

    • Hendra Susanto

in case you don’t get it, i was being sarcastic. :p

  • Solomon_Kano

    No Instant Brain? :(

Ha. Type-0′s still crushing? Man. [insert obligatory western release request].

    • Aoshi00

Disappointing indeed, I tried the demo of Instant Brain and it was good, reviews are good too, waiting for my copy.. well it’s a VN, so..

I love PW in HD so far… much better than PSP for me control wise and looks gorgeous on the big TV, amazing port..   btw, I’m importing Peacewalker HD too, and I think I should be getting a d/l code for the PSP ver.. if anyone is interested in the Jpn PSP PW, let me know I could sell it for like $10 or something, sry for the plug.. might get MGS2/3 and want to sell the code for Jpn MGS1 too.. also for around $10..

      • Solomon_Kano

I’d have shamelessly put a plug in if I had something to sell, so I don’t mind lol.

So you have the English HD collection and you’re importing PW HD? I’m planning on getting the collection at some point, so I’m glad PW turned out well. I passed it up on PSP because of the controls, so this port is a godsend lol.

        • Aoshi00

yea, I’ve collected all the US and Jpn ver for the main MGS1-4/PW before.. so I guess I would need to double dip for this HD remake as well, and too bad the 3 games are not on one collection like we have, Jpn always gets jipped.  Yea, I wish I could trade those d/l codes w/ the 360 avatar items, that’s why I want to sell them lol..

PW HD is great, looks absolutely beautiful, even more so than I expected (well it’s 60 fps for all 3 games).. the PSP controls for me was awful as well (I so regret buying the PSP vers).. couldn’t change the camera freely (w/ face btns or the claw?), was hard to aim and shoot or do CQC,, switching btwn the right weapons and items, just died an awful lot and frustrating for me.. but for the HD port, the graphics, the sound, controls (or online co-op if you could find someone to play w/) just awesome.. I got nothing against handheld and don’t even need PW to have MGS4 graphics, but this is what it should’ve been on console w/ 2 analog sticks since MGS has so many commands, the controller just plays so much better and smoother than the one tiny anlaog stick on the PSP.. and my eyes are not as good as they used to be, so playing a fast action game on the PSP takes a lot out of me.. so I hooked it up to the TV and it was all polygon-ish w/ and boxed in, just looked awful..

So once I finish it in Eng. I want to go thru it in Jpn again.. but the Eng VAs are really good w/ the Spanish accent since they’re in Costa Rica..

I have a feeling FF type-0 would get some kind of HD remake too, that’s why I’m not getting it on PSP now..

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, the controls in PW made me wanna throw my PSP lol. It’s great to see that Konami put so much work into PW HD. Getting second analog support, 60 fps, updated textures, online, etc. Screw looking like MGS4, getting a game that was good in a better form when they could’ve phoned its port in is enough. Now the only MGS game I’ll have never played is Portable Ops, but I’m alright with that.

That’s cool that you collect the English and Japanese versions of the MGS games. Probably crazy expensive, but still cool. For the sake of having everything together, I almost wanna hold off on getting the collection to see if that ultimate collection rumor pans out. Having beaten MGS4 while borrowing it from a friend, it’d be nice to own them all and buy em in one fell swoop. I already got MGS1 off of PSN, but getting the rest together would be great.

So happy to see my dear SEGA in first place. Thank you, princess of SEGA Hatsune Miku.

  • kroufonz

meikyuu made it to 20th while instant brain can’t, even with the extra and good review/reception

    • Aoshi00

I know, crazy..and disappointing I guess… and Meikyuu barely made 20th.. the art looks good and all but it’s random dungeon crawler like Students of the Round which I’m not interested in even though the soundtrack was epic.. and that’s an enhanced port too compared to Instant Brain being an original game..

I hope Instant Brain would sell more later from good word of mouth like Steins;Gate was.. I can’t wait to play it after the demo, it’s actually a good mystery VN and not gory, not to mention the beautiful artwork.. and it has all those extras too w/ Nin-2 Jump and Dondonpachi..

      • superdry

I hear Instant Brain is pretty good.  Unlocking Dodonpachi is the main reason I want to buy it, but I’ll have to wait for some walkthrough to appear since I hear the puzzles can get complicated, and, thus, hard for someone who is not fluent in Japanese to by.

        • Aoshi00

yea, the demo had really good atmosphere and sold me too. At first I was skeptical since it’s Cave’s first VN, but the menu interface is so smooth..  I hope the puzzles won’t be too hard either.. for me I like it because of the artwork and voice acting (Android C is Noto Mamiko :), DDP is just a very nice extra..

    • http://www.starcreator.com/ StarCreator

As some people in STG circles like to point out, these sales charts usually only factor estimated sales to brick and mortar retailers.  Online sales aren’t represented, which probably affects smaller releases like CAVE’s disproportionately to those of the larger publishers.  Only CAVE knows how well their game actually did.

  • MarkMario

Extend is a nice game, my favorite module would have to be either Miku’s 2010 Racing Outfit or Rin’s End of Solitude.
The Extreme difficulty is fun too, I like some of the charts for the songs.

  • aoihana

It’s great that Project Diva Extend sold so many copies since it’s pretty much a repackaged Project Diva 2nd, hence the name ^o^ I actually expected a lot less sales.

The new songs are awesome, but the modules are really somethin’! 。◕‿◕。

    • D K

Extend is NOT a ‘repackaged Project Diva 2nd’.  While it’s true that there aren’t really any new features in Extend (though frankly I’m not sure what they could add…these games are already packed), they track list is mostly new.  And in my opinion it’s the best selection of songs in one of these games yet.  I’m frankly confused by the naming scheme.

      • aoihana

It basically is. It was called Project Diva 2.5 when it was first announced for a reason. Half the songs and modules in Extend are carried over from Project Diva 2nd.

This isn’t a bad thing, I bought the game and I love it, but yes, it’s a repackaged Project Diva 2nd.

In essence, Project Diva Extend is what Project Diva 2nd should have been. Like I said, it’s not a bad thing, but it’s called Extend for a reason.

There’s a lot of new modules and songs, but like I said, it’s an extension at the end of the day. It’s awesome regardless. 。◕‿◕。

        • D K

I know quite well what it was announced as.  I think that has more to do with the lack of feature changes than anything.  The mechanics of play changed significantly between the first and second games.

Yes there are songs that are carried over but that was true in Project Diva 2nd too.  Over 50% of the songs in Extend are brand new.  It stands on its own.  How do you call something with over 50% new content ‘repackaged’?  And a lot of the songs that aren’t new were only released before as DLC so it’s not like everyone has them.

Not to mention the ridiculous number of modules available now.  That’s something that seems to only get bigger with every release…

          • aoihana

Like you said, the mechanics of the first game significantly improved in the 2nd game, which is why it was call Project Diva 2nd, or a true sequel.

Other than new modules and 19 new songs, Project Diva Extend is basically the same as Project Diva 2nd, albeit with some fine tuning. Even the menus and interface is exactly the same, with some little tweaks here and there.

I didn’t mean it to come off as negative, I love the game, but Project Diva Extend is not a true sequel, but rather like the name implies, an extension of 2nd. Like I said, it’s not a bad thing, but when Project Diva 3rd hits, it’ll most definitely feature new gameplay improvements/features and it’ll be a true sequel.
            .
Let’s just agree to disagree 。◕‿◕。

          • D K

Well I agree with your last post!  It was just the term ‘repackaged’ I objected to.  I mean yeah, Extend is basically the same game as 2nd except with a bunch of new content.  Which is basically fine with me since I think 2nd got it right.  I can’t think of many changes I would *want* to make to the gameplay…

But to me ‘repackaged’ implies it’s a special edition with a few extras thrown in.  There is a lot of new content in Extend, even if it works the same way.  As an owner of 2nd there is still plenty of reason to buy Extend (especially if you didn’t buy the DLC…).

  • AzureNova

And this is how it should be. Project Diva and Miku all the way! :3

“We suspect the HD versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 will do better. ”

No doubt. Shooter inspired gameplay and hand drawn cut scenes doesn’t do the MG franchise justice…

Seeing Labyrinth Cross Blood on the rank 20th perfectly shows that no matter how good is one game, if u choose one hell of a bad time to release. U are surely doomed.

For Mario 3D Land i wanted to see how does Mario sales affect on U.S as i myself already buy and played the game now.
