Rumor: Square Enix Creating Action RPG For PS3 And Vita

By Spencer . December 5, 2011 . 12:49am

Rumor: Square Enix Creating Action RPG For PS3 And VitaA handful of job listings may have outed one of Square Enix future titles. The rumored project is an action RPG for PlayStation 3 and Vita. Since this game is being made with the Unity Engine it is probably not the Unreal Engine action RPG announced last week. This game is said to be tied to Square Enix’s 1st Production Department in Japan, according to the classifieds posts.

There are a few hints about the title, like it may involve airships. One planner job is for creating a world map with an airship and gameplay elements inside the airship. The game may have customizable characters too since another position is for a planner who will work on different jobs, abilities, character growth, and customization systems.

Square Enix’s 1st Production Department is also working on Final Fantasy XIII-2, an overseas release of Final Fantasy Type-0, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

my guess is the next Type-X game. vita and PS3 crossing like Metal gear and such.
the customizing part is probably just be changing some feature of the character like hair and costume?

  • Suicunesol

Both a console version and a portable version of the Type games should make both Japan and the US very happy.

“The rumored project is an action RPG for PlayStation 3 and PSP.”
Shouldn’t it be “for PS3 and PSV”?

  • Zanasea

If you check Square Enix’s own recruitment website you can see these offers were already there before, only they didn’t mention any platform. The 2 offers were added to an external recruitment website this week-end, with the PS3/PSV mention added. Also, the title of the offers specifies that they are now “Urgent”.

It’ll probably be called “New RPG IP that is better than FF, but won’t sell as well: XIV”

    or something of that ilk

  • d19xx

Whatever the heck happened to Squeenix’s Luminous Studio game engine?

    • Solomon_Kano

I believe they said it’s meant for next-gen development. So it’s waiting in the wings with the PS4 and next Xbox, I’d guess.

  • badmoogle

Airships, worldmap, inns, job systems…sounds a lot like old FF games. This has certainly picked my curiosity. But i remain cautious for now.:p

  • Boo

One can hope that their working on a remake of FF7.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jazzlyn.lim Jazlynn Lim

FF7 isn’t an Action RPG. It’s a regular semi turn-based RPG (ATB Gauge introduces real time elements).

      • RupanIII

        “FF7 isn’t an Action RPG.”

        Until they remake it, anyway..

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

I see what you did there

        • http://openid.anonymity.com/5HuDuQyz Woot

Ugh. I just threwed up a little in my mouth.

But anyways, I’m happy enough with an HD remake of FFX.

Not sure about type-0 being work on or at least how long it will take to even be anounce but am sure it’s eather Type-1 or must be a Non FF action RPG.

they should be, working only on Versus.

    • Ereek

Oops, clicked like instead of reply.

You do realize that even if this game wasn’t made, these team members still probably wouldn’t be working on Versus, right?  SE has over ten teams and for a few they do mix and match, but certainly not all members come and go and work on everything.

      • Solomon_Kano

This. It’s almost like people don’t realize that these companies have different teams working on different games.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Zekushion Dylan Anantha

Nice, taking all the good bits from the different FF series. Still waiting for a Job system that can rival FF V/ Tactics/ Advance/ Advance 2.

  • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

I think they should really start something new.. I would like to see the modern fusion of the west and the east…

  • XGriever

hmm sounds really good from them hints hope it turns out to be a great game. i love airships and world maps….so this has got me already lol

  • Göran Isacson

Interesting. An airship RPG with customizable classes? A cross between FFV and SKies of Arcadia? Sure, this speculation could be wrong but darnit, right now I’m in the mood to dream!

“The rumored project is an action RPG for PlayStation 3 and PSP”

Spencer, I’m pretty sure you meant to say “Vita” instead of “PSP”, no?

Anyway, I can’t lie, I’m excited about this. I have faith in the 1st Production Dept., they usually work on games that stay in synch with the Square Enix we all knew and loved.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jazzlyn.lim Jazlynn Lim

One hour later, and it’s still there.

Anyway, this sounds like a game I’d love. I hope Square Enix doesn’t betray our expectations.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

And again, it will be something like Final Fantasy Brigade… Chibi FF characters with a silly never-wanted action RPG.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

1st Production Company? Who are they?

    • OneOkami

      Yoshinori Kitase’s team

      • Solomon_Kano

Tabata’s team and Nomura’s team are also under the 1st Production dept. It’s comprised of several teams.

        • OneOkami

Ahh, I see.  I thought they were each uniquely numbered.

          • Solomon_Kano

The numbers indicate what series that dept. is for, I believe. The 1st mostly works on numbered FFs, DQ and KH.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Haha :D Imagine they’re numbered like Crocodile’s assassins in One Piece.

  • http://twitter.com/seph_luis_br Luis Camargo

Give me a Vagrant Story/Parasite Eve remake/sequence and I’ll be buying this blind.
Make your IP’s stronger, give me great games and take my money.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

SE was at their golden age at the mid and late-90s. With the new millenium, SE became a greedy company. I don’t think we will ever see a new IP as half quality as Vagrant Story/Parasite Eve I-II/Xenogears or Chrono series.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

    I don’t know

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jan-Daryll-Palanca/100000250304791 Jan Daryll Palanca

what ever happened to the chrono series?

    More Parasite Eve please!

If it will like the 3rd Birthday, no more Parasite Eve please!

  • SirRichard

A PS3 action RPG by the department behind Final Fantasy Versus XIII, eh?

So we won’t see it until 2020?

    • Solomon_Kano

I’m sure you were joking, but there are multiple teams under the 1st Production Dept, so this wouldn’t be from the team behind Versus. Sadly, they’re STILL behind Versus lol.

  • http://bluehighwind.blogspot.com/ BlueHighwind

    Could I dream for Fortress?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

    Hmmm…. My assumptions are;

-Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Vol.2
    -Parasite Eve spin-off
    -Final Fantasy Type-1

I’ll bet my money to the BbS Vol.2

Aaaand, Versus XIII? Come on SE, don’t make jokes now, just release FFXIII-2 and KH3D. We get over with Versus XIII.

    • Solomon_Kano

To me, Type-1 sounds most likely of those. I’ve never played Parasite Eve but, far as I know, the series doesn’t deal in airships.

BBS V.2 would be awesome, but Nomura’s already said that 3D is the last one before KH3 (though it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s not, seeing as KH3 is still a long ways off). Had he not said that, I still wouldn’t think it’d be a KH game. The term airship, used in conjunction with SE, always makes me think DQ or FF. The listing implies that you’d be using one and KH already had/has the Gummi ship. I dunno, that’s just how I looked at it lol.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Yeah, I don’t trust Nomura on this. As you said, KHIII is way too far from us. First, they need to finish Versus XIII which I don’t think it will happen anytime near. KH BbS Vol. 2 would be perfect but I don’t think they’ll release it for PS3 too if it ever happen. DQX is already in development for Wii and Wii U. So I don’t think it we will get DQ either.

I think the best bet is Type-1.

        • Solomon_Kano

By what they’ve said of it, I’d estimate Versus XIII will be done by late next year. So, yea, we’re in for a wait lol.

We definitely won’t be getting DQ, I agree. No way they’re throwing us another one with DQM coming to 3DS and DQX to Wii/U. As you said, BBS V.2 would be unlikely to release on PS3 — imagine how much more upset people would be about not getting KHIII when they find out the next console game is still a spin-off? Lol.

Type-1 or new IP, it is.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Fan rage at its max. in the case of KHIII. We waiting for the 3rd installment since 2005 and all we get is more prequels, interquels or side story games (note that spin-off is an entirely different thing, for example; Yakuza Of The End is a spin-off, not MGS Rising or Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days). It’s been nearly 7 years and we have nothing but the name. KHIII project depends on the finishing of Versus XIII and since Versus XIII won’t come out untill the end of the next year optimistically. So? How many years will it take to develop KHIII? More than 2 years minimum right? So at the best case scenario, KHIII will be released in at the end of 2014. Don’t you think the eighth generation consoles will come by then? Hell, eighth generation began already with Nintendo 3DS, and with PSVita with Wii U…

          • Solomon_Kano

I know spin-offs are different, but the people that have been complaining never make that distinction. The “spin-off” that BBS supposedly is is actually the most important title since the first 2, but they just call anything that doesn’t have the title KHIII a spin-off.

Yea, I’m willing to bet that KHIII misses this console generation. I even recall Nomura saying once that they’d look into a next-gen release for it if the timing doesn’t work out. Honestly, I wouldn’t even be mad at that. BBS gave me my fill, so if they just give us a KH collection then I’ll be good til whenever III is ready. I really want Versus, so I’ll just be happy once that’s done. Regardless of how long KHIII takes.

  • SuigetsuHiramura

Dare I say Final Fantasy XV? It’s already rumored to be an action RPG and it would be nice if a mainstream Final Fantasy returned to it’s roots with world maps and what not. Other than that, Type-1 for PS3 would make me really happy ^_^

    • Solomon_Kano

Not that I’d be against such a game, but wouldn’t it be moving further away from its roots by being an action RPG? Airships and all, that’d be a step further away.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

I don’t think Square will ever release a turn-based system RPG game. Maybe Bravely Default (I don’t know since the game does not appeals me). FFXV makes sense in a way though, but the whole PS3 and Vita thing annoys me. Could we get at least one exclusive for Vita please (Uncharted: The Golden Abyss will be ported PS3, wait and see)?

        • Solomon_Kano

FF XIII was turn-based but, yea, I don’t see them making a turn-based console RPG in the same vein as the old ones. I’m confused about Bravely Default, are you saying this listing could be for that or what?

Much as people keep saying it, I’m certain Golden Abyss won’t see a PS3 port. Wouldn’t make sense. I love Sony Bend and I expect GA to be good, but they aren’t Naughty Dog. Why port another developers take on a franchise when you already have the originals on console?

The Vita has it’s own exclusives and will have more moving forward, it’s just a matter of waiting. The system isn’t even out yet, so we just need to give it time to build up its user base and for devs to get used to it. The 3DS had a rough start, but it’s finally picking up. Time is key.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Why port Golden Abyss to the PS3? The same reason why they port God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta to the PS3. The first three games on home console of Sony, which made by Santa Monica, but PSP games made by Ready at Dawn. So, it happened before, not that it won’t happen again.

I mentioned Bravely Default because of I don’t know that game will be either turn based or action-RPG. I don’t add it to the list because we already now that game will come. This is an entirely new project.

3DS recollects all it lost like you said. I’m so happy about this. Finally, it surpasses DS as the sale wise, and Super Mario 3D Land with Mario Kart 7 is the medicine of 3DS. One by one, other games will release for 3DS and that is raising my hope to anticipating a FFV and FFVI remake for 3DS. That’s all I’m asking for SE honestly.

          • Solomon_Kano

The God of War Origins collection happened in response to the first GOW collection. After the HD remake thing took off, they figured it’d be profitable to get the rest of the series on console. With Golden Abyss it would be a straight port most likely, and our market probably wouldn’t react as well to seeing a portable game on console with no change as they would to the reverse. We’ll see, of course, but… I dunno. I just don’t see Sony porting Vita games to PS3. Uncharted or otherwise.

Oh. Yea, Bravely Default is turn-based. I know this is a new project, I just didn’t understand what you were asking.

Yea, the 3DS really gained steam with MK7 and 3D Land. Remakes of FFV and VI would be great. I’ve been wondering for a while now if SE would continue with remaking the games on handheld since they did 3 and 4 on DS, so I hope that happens. If they pick back up I hope that they, or FFVI at least, go multiplatform with the remakes. FFVI is my favorite FF, so I’d like a remake on as many platforms as possible lol.

  • Solomon_Kano

My mind immediately went to the next Type- game. Airships, PS3 and Vita, action RPG.

Unless this is for a new IP, that seemed the most obvious choice to me. Tabata said that he’d like to do the next Type on PS3 and, right now, SE’s only other known Vita project is FFX HD — also on PS3. I took that to mean that -perhaps- SE is setting a precedent for their treatment of the system moving forward. Particularly high profile releases seeing a Vita version and all. I doubt it (there’s not really enough info to say anything even slightly concrete), but it’s a possibility.

    • MrRobbyM

“Next type game on the PS3″

Is….is this real life? SE, if you make this happen, I will love your forever and will forgive you for all the recent shitty games.

      • Solomon_Kano

I would buy it for both systems if they actually do it like Tabata’s been hinting at. And I NEVER do that lol.

        • MrRobbyM

I would too actually. Especially if there’s cross-play support a la MGS Peace Walker.

          • Solomon_Kano

That would sweeten the pot. I think I might even go for it if they didn’t have cross-play, but that’s probably not even an if. That seems to be something all PS3/Vita games have.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-Schwarz/100002325567790 Kevin Schwarz

You can’t expect much out of Square-Enix these days. They are living out of already-existing series, and boringly taken ones. They’ve lost the touch. Yeah, some may argue type-0 is the @#$%, but it’s not. It’s boring after a while, also FFXIII-2 looks like it will be boring after a couple of hours. In my opinion, I don’t think anything “new” will be necessarily “fun” coming from them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

@Solomon_Kano:disqus I read somewhere a few years ago that Matrix Software wants to make a remake of FFV and FFVI but it is not possible at DS since this two titles are more bigger than FFIII and FFIV. Since 3DS is out I don’t think the space is a problem anymore. But again, someone at SE said that they won’t do any remakes of old FF titles because it costs so much time and money and consuming sources. This is a huge mystery long story short. But I hope they’ll do it.

As for Bravely Default, I know the only thing about game is that the game will come for 3DS, made by Matrix Software and has a lot of vibe of FFV. That’s all. I didn’t know if game has turn-based battle system since I don’t attracted to game so much that I didn’t follow the news of it.

  • sherimae1324

    type-0 is boring?…ah… i know kevin-chan likes EROGE GAMES!!! *^_^*

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-Schwarz/100002325567790 Kevin Schwarz

No, I don’t like Eroge games, those are boring as hell, and I don’t see the point in them when you don’t actually like cartoon porn. Sorry, I mean anime-porn.

The boring thing about Type-0 is that it is too linear to my tastes, but that’s just my opinion. I have to admit it is not as boring as FFXIII, or (just my opinion) Kingdom Hearts BBS.

      • sherimae1324

i see kevin-chan has very high expectations when it comes to video games ^_^ why do many players hate FFXIII? sorry i havnt played it many people specially westerns says the game is bad =(

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-Schwarz/100002325567790 Kevin Schwarz

Not really “bad” to hate it, but it’s way too linear, and the characters are the stereotypes you see in every game, sadly.

  • sherimae1324

but why nintedo  got the remakes of the lower final fantasy? and sony got the the new final fantasy games (type-0, XIII-2, versus XIII) does the wii or 3DS cant handle those games?
sore wa ikimasen ne nintendo… (thats too bad nintendo….)

    • Joanna

      ^__~?
What do you mean, PSP got remakes of I, II, and IV. FF has been mostly a Sony branded game now (although not impossible for it to jump ship and there have been spin-off games on Nintendo consoles: Tactics Advance, Crystal Chronicles, 4 Warriors of Light, Chocobo’s Dungeon, etc.) so it is not so unusual. As for why Nintendo products get the NES/SNES FF remakes? If I were to guess it would be because SE is aiming at the fans who enjoyed those games on the Nintendo consoles. Or else they want to build up a back-up fanbase in case something were to go terribly wrong with their current setup. Or just spread the games around so not to saturate one console/handheld (this makes sense given how SE likes to port to mobile devices).

Eh, I wouldn’t say too bad since Nintendo did get SE’s other golden hen, Dragon Quest.

    • Solomon_Kano

Yea, like @Joanna_T:disqus said, they’ve both gotten remakes of old FFs.

As for XIII-2 and Versus, yea, the Wii couldn’t handle them. Type-0… I don’t think the DS could handle it but, then again, I don’t recall too many full-3D DS games at all. I know there were some, but I probably just never played them lol.

  • sherimae1324

i want type-1! want it! onegaishimasu tabata-san! but please no more tragic ending! (still suffering from class zero’s untimely demise T_T)

    • Solomon_Kano

      Demise? :O

I can’t say I didn’t see it coming, but, man, that sucks.

      • sherimae1324

its bcuz they are too young to have such a burden and to die… well atleast they die as a heroes ^_^ theyre just 16-17 yrs old though i have a 10 yr gap between them tee-hee *^_^*

        *now playing Danganronpa! PSP :D*

        • Solomon_Kano

Young indeed. May they rest in peace lol.

  • Joanna

    My thoughts exactly. :)

  • Solomon_Kano

If Matrix Software is still interested, I’m certain they could get it done on 3DS. I understand where they’re coming from on the consumption of resources though. There’s a point where that becomes less viable than spending the same amount, time, and resources to build new games or whole new IP.

Bravely Default looks veeery reminiscent of FF: 4 Warriors of Light to me. I’d say that’s a good thing so, based on that, I’m looking forward to it. I’m not particularly attracted to strictly turn-based games anymore, but throwbacks are always welcome with how JRPGs have changed.

  • sherimae1324

but soromon-chan did the dragon quest series shifted to nintendo from sony permanently? and i think dragon quest games are much more easy to develop since it uses cel-shaded graphics than those eye-cathing versus XIII graphics, so i think there will be no problem for the wii to handle, its just my guess tee-hee

    • Solomon_Kano

At this point, it’s not clear if Dragon Quest is gone to Nintendo permanently. That’s how it looks with the 5 or so and next 4 or so titles all set for Nintendo systems. And you’re right, the cel-shading is no problem for the Wii.
