Senran Kagura: Portrait of Girls Sales Paint A Pretty Picture

Bursting breasts producer, Kenichiro Takaki, returned to the Senran Kagura blog today, providing an update on the game’s sales. Kagura, Takaki says, will cross the 80,000 mark by the end of the year.

Senran Kagura: Portrait of Girls debuted back in September, selling 52,000 copies in its first week, and providing a short boost to Nintendo 3DS sales as well. Hitting the system early seems to have paid off, and considering that there’s an ongoing manga series and various merchandise being sold, Marvelous may have a new series to bank upon.

Speaking with Siliconera, Takaki made no secret of the fact that he’d like to develop a sequel. Co-op and versus modes are on his list of features to add, and he plans to improve the way the game’s story and characters are represented as well.

    tits the game sold well

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

I wasn’t even expecting this one to sell well.

  • XypherCode

good for them. this might be a chance for a localization :P oh well… xD

  • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

Nice to hear! I hope XSEED picks this up and Tamsoft is able to make a sequel.

  • Hraesvelgr

Never had any interest in the game and never really got the appeal, but if it did well for them, then good for them.

  • Go2hell66

    wow a whooooooooooole 52000 copies
    /sarcasm

j/k guess thats a lot of copies for what it is, especially considering what console its on

    • Michael Vincent

It’s not about what console it is on.

I’m honestly sure that Marvelous is not as big as Capcom or Nintendo which will have a larger sales expectations.

Case in Point – Ace Attorney Investigations 2 was never released in the west because Capcom’s forecasted sales for the game does not meet their sales expectations quota, or whatever you call it. Because it is a big company, the cost for marketing, localization, and everything are higher too. “If” for example Marvelous, or even Atlus owns the Ace Attorney franchise, perhaps AA2 may have been release because the forecasted sales for the game, which is low by Capcom’s standards, is already high enough for them.

I bet that 52,000 is something within the range of what Marvelous expected it to be, hell, that number may have even exceeded their expectations actually.

      • Ryos

Sounded pretty low to me but obviously they had pretty low standards for what was a resounding success to them.  Obviously if you have 250k goals and only get 52k, that is a failure, whereas if you’re hoping for 50k and expect to get 80k+, that’s a tentative success.  This is one of those games/series where I’d expect merchandising to make a big impact on the bottom line.

        • Michael Vincent

Hmm, I don’t know, but honestly, since they are a small company (again we are comparing them to Capcom, Sony, Nintendo etc in terms of size) that 52k is actually big. In business, you have to realistically target your goals. Why set a goal of 220k units of Senran Kagura sold when they don’t even have the capacity to “produce” those units? This is just my two cents.

  • aoihana

That’s great to hear because I’d absolutely love a sequel! (ノ>▽<。)ノ

Co-op and versus modes are on his list of features to add, and he plans to improve the way the game’s story and characters are represented as well.

Awesome! I think that’ll be real fun, but I hope they are online, I don’t think there are much Senran Kagura fans in my area! (*^ワ^*)

Though, new features aside, there are some improvements I’d like to see, too.

First and foremost, the dressing room should definitely be in 3D for the sequel. There was no excuse for it before, but it should definitely be ironed out by now. (;¬_¬)

The frame rate, although not too bad during regular gameplay, it could drop pretty significantly. Some of the Ninpo techniques, namely Yagyu’s, were cringing to watch. Although they were beautiful, you can’t fully appreciate it with 20 FPS. (*≧m≦*)

The ending was simply amazing, but I would have enjoyed it if the animation was just a tad smoother.

The enemies should definitely be more diverse. I find those training mannequins, or whatever they are, to be really annoying when they are spammed in a wave. Honestly, I only noticed a handful of enemy ninja types, and there should really be more. Killing the same ninja 30 times in 5 minutes is kind of a turn off.

Enemy A.I. definitely needs to be improved. At times, the enemies just stand around doing absolutely nothing, and you kind of have to smack them a bit to reset them. Although, this doesn’t happen too often, it’s still annoying, specifically, when you’re trying to see your clothing destruction scenes.

Making costumes more easily accessible should definitely be considered for the sequel. Unlocking costumes were a definite chore in Senran Kagura, and that shouldn’t be the case.

I think it should be fun and exciting to unlock costumes, but some of the conditions are just plain ridiculous, I think. I could live with the mission objectives and such, but having to complete all the missions 5 times to unlock like 2 items, specifically, when they aren’t anything special, is ridiculous. Honestly, I’ve stopped trying to unlock them because I just burned out, but I’ll get back to it soon, I hope!

To add, there should really be more costumes and accessories, the 180 costumes and accessories promised mainly consist of palette swaps. Although, I should add that they were very good palette swaps, at least! ┐(‘~`;)┌

There should be more extras other than characters bios, CG’s, sounds and BGM’s. I think adding in a Theater mode where you can watch all the Ninpo techniques, transformations, clothing destruction’s, etc. would be an incredibly awesome extra. (^v^)

The dressing room should be a little more diverse, too. As it stands, it’s very bare bones. Adding a feature to strike a pose, or to take a picture would most definitely spice things up! (*^ワ^*)

Adding more characters, or at the very least making the girls from the Orochi Academy playable should be a given for a sequel.

Last but not least, I think they should focus more on the fanservice, it is it’s main selling point, after all! I think that the destruction scenes were very good, but I felt that they were very abrupt, and you couldn’t really appreciate it much. I think providing a nice top to bottom view, or something, would be nice. (◕‿◕✿)

To add, the clothing damage bar is too resistant, a damage multiplier would be perfect. Sometimes, it takes quite a bit before the destruction scenes kick in, and this is especially apparent in the earlier levels.

I hope I didn’t discourage or give people the wrong idea about the game, it’s great, but I just wanted to bring these things to attention. (◕‿◕✿)

Damn~ Aoi, that’s long. Maybe you should write a review of it on SiliconEra Bounce and use these paragraphs in it.

So the game has good elements, but needs more refinement?

      • aoihana

Sorry! Yeah, it’s long, but I just couldn’t stop when I started!
        (*^ワ^*)

Yeah, it definitely has it’s good elements, but I focused more on the improvements, or what I thought should be improved, anyway. (◕‿◕✿)

        • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

Darn, I haven’t seen anybody write a comment that long. You would make a good reviewer.

    • Hinataharem

      My goodness Aoi.

    • z_merquise

      Thanks for this, aoihana!

I hope I’m not yet too late but I also wanted to know how’s the story and the characterization in this game. For what I know, the developers hired an acclaimed novelist to write the story in this game. Does this game had a well-written story and characters with depth beneath the naughtiness of the game?

      • aoihana

The story is actually pretty good, and the characters develop really well as the story progresses. I think this is apparent in both Asuka, and her rival Homura. I don’t want to give away too much, but there’s also some tense moments in the story.

The majority of the story is told in text and narrations, but there’s a good amount of cutscenes in between. In short, it’s not just all fanservice, I think the story and characters are quite good!(◕‿◕✿)

        • Testsubject909

*looks at the pictures of the characters, specifically their… assets*

          They look well developed already…

          • aoihana

I meant their personality and character, silly! (*^ワ^*)

            。.:*・°☆ (/。>▽<)/ [Happy New Year!] (>▽<。) ☆.。.:*・°

          • Testsubject909

Happy new years. Sorry for the lack of smileys and emoticon, I stopped using them many many years ago when I started to get far more involved in multi-pararaph roleplays which I dropped out of because of some enforcement of elitism in some forums that was just uncomfortable…

            *coughs*

I mean. To another year full of games, controversy, fun, fan service and people’s wallets dying as they toss money to shut developers up in impatience!

  • RaikageV

    You know…
    …I still want that game.

  • Hinataharem

I don’t care what anyone says, I find the characters adorable in this game.

Even if the boobs have to be taken out, localize please.

    • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

But it’s called “Hyper Battle of Bursting Breasts”! The game won’t be itself anymore without those!

I’m not sure why they felt the need to advertise Oppai as one of the main draws, considering how saturated mainstream media in Japan is with fanservice already… But that’s beside the point!

      • aoihana

But it’s called “Hyper Battle of Bursting Breasts”! The game won’t be itself anymore without those!

Exactly, I don’t think I would’ve purchased it if if the boobs were taken out!

        (*^ワ^*)

Hmmm…I see your point, but at that point the whole concept of the game would be thrown out the window, it was built on fanservice, after all! It’s a fun game, but like I said, if it weren’t for the fanservice, I wouldn’t have bought it, really. But then again, that’s just me. ┐(‘~`;)┌

To be honest, I’m not sure why they advertised it as a 3D revolution, when the core game itself is 2D. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed and felt betrayed when Marvelous announced the game wouldn’t be fully 3D like 2 days before release. It was real shady, but in the end, I think the 2D compliments it really well, so no harm done, I suppose. (◕‿◕✿)

        • Hinataharem

          I know…I’m just desperate for a localization (´A`。)

I really wanna play! I’m so jelly of Aoi

          • aoihana

Don’t give in to desperation! Have hope! (◕‿◕✿)

          • Testsubject909

            Yes, Have Hope!

That you’ll find Aoihana’s address and steal Aoihana’s copy of the game!

I mean, of it getting localized. Yes, that’s what I meant…

            *starts running*

  • SH3

Good for them. Now when do we get to play it?

  • http://twitter.com/Xander_VJ David García Abril

Has the game too much text?

Because if it has, then we can forget about a localization.
80.000 copies is not too shaby for a new IP in a struggling new console, but it is WAAAAAAY too low to for a medium-heavy text game to get green lighted for a localization.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I don’t think how badly a game does in Japan really has a bearing on localizations, unless it’s a quality issue. In fact, something not taking off in Japan might mean the publisher may be more inclined to try and have it localized, in order to make a little more profit off of it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

yes, tehre will be SHFigureArts for few kagura characters … I will absolutely buy them … because I can’t play the game, at least I can have the toys

  • Darkrise

I envy all those who were able to import a jp 3DS and Senran Kagura…

  • http://twitter.com/Ale598 Ale598

This is one of my reasons I want a Japanese 3DS this and New Love Plus. <3 Gonna have to find that manga didn't know about that.

  • AzureNova

I so want the boobies…..er I mean game to get localized. :3

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TWQ2HJO5VMSEPS5RDQDVRDM52A Shawn D

localized i think every guy with a 3DS will buy that lol

  • PrinceHeir
