Namco’s iPhone Arcade Games Are So Retro You Need To Insert Credits To Play Them

By Spencer . January 26, 2012 . 1:47am

Namcos iPhone Arcade Games Are So Retro You Need To Insert Credits To Play ThemNamco Bandai brought some of their 80s arcade games to iPhone. You can get Xevious, Phozon, Motos, and Tower of Druaga now. And just like actual arcade machines, you need to put in credits to play them.

Each day, you get one free play. After that, ten credits cost 80 yen ($1). Sure, each play is less than an actual arcade game (those are at least 100 yen), but 10 cents per Tower of Druaga credit seems a bit steep.

Players can compete for top scores on leaderboards and share replays online. You can download the Namco Arcade app here.

Personally I’ve always hated the concept of pay-to-play.

So much for downloading them. If that’s the case, the you’re better off getting Namco Museum for PSP.

I think it’s hysterical that people would complain about this considering that this is how gaming began.

Yeah…and there’s a reason we moved on from it as well.

This isn’t back in the day, they should just let us buy the games and be done with it.  They don’t need the extra money to repair arcade cabinets and maintain the arcade.

Well, consider that Namco has released collections of arcade games that you could play the titles as many times as you want (and in some cases, would even let you set DIP switches) since 1995 and as recently as 2010. These collections have been released on every home console and each major handheld including the current generation.

Why wouldn’t someone complain that Namco is now charging for something that has been a free feature in their games for 15 years?

    Yeah…

well, at least the app itself is free. But one free game a day isn’t much. Compared to this, the games where its free but you can pay for extras seems a lot more attractive

The same thing happened with XBLA Game Room. You could permanently buy a title so that you didn’t need credits, but it was expensive.

I don’t really understand Namco or Atari’s mindset when it comes to things like this. I don’t mind going to an arcade, putting a coin in a machine and playing a game. It possesses a nostalgic and social component that is worth the extra cost.

But on an iphone? Or on a home console? Why would anyone do that? Anyone can buy a namco museum or atari collection of games for the PSP or the PS2 for almost nothing. Heck, if you played games like this often, purchasing an old atari or old NES isn’t that costly and it gives you a much nostalgic solution.
