Love Thy Commenter: A Day For Appreciation On Siliconera

Love Thy Commenter: A Day For Appreciation On Siliconera

Last year on Valentine’s Day, we did a little Siliconera community activity we called “Love thy commenter”. We asked our community to share who their favourite Siliconera commenters were and why, and our readers responded with great gusto. This year, we’re doing it again.

Siliconera’s grown a little bit since last year, and we’ve seen plenty of new faces join our older readers in the comments section. This year’s activity is a chance for our community members to introduce themselves to each other, and yes, if you have a favourite community member, mention that, too!

So, here’s the plan: Introduce yourself to the community (you don’t have to provide your real name), tell us a bit about yourself, and if you have any words of admiration for other Siliconera members, please, by all means, go right ahead and pour on the affection. This is a day for appreciation.

Congrats on the weight loss and muscle gain, bro. It’s good to be strong. Keep it up if you can and remember that true strength and power come from within.

  • SolidusSnake

Hey, thanks for the shout out. And for being a contributor to the crazy, eccentric tornado of fun that the comment section always turns into here. You’re always welcome to join us on twitter anytime, but be warned: IT’S WAY crazier than my comrades make it out to be. Beware!

Edit: Whoa, looks like disqus posted all my replies at the top of the thread. It all makes sense in context, I swear!

  • BadenBadenPrinny

I’m just some dood who love Prinnies. This site is cool though

  • Zefiro Torna

Hello community, I’ve been posting here since Oct 2008 but have held aside from posting for some time recently as result of being busy with one thing or another (work and games). Yet, I still manage to read every article here since it feels like a long day without Siliconera. I first came to check out this paradise back when it was a white text on a black background sort of deal with loads of interesting import reviews, then I began following on a regular basis during the giant monster era after reading a number of awesomely intriguing interviews that were unlike anything I’d seen at the more mainstream news outlets.

As for who I am, if my handle can give away one thing it’s that I’ve identified myself after a work by Monteverdi due to the fact that I first heard it during what would later turn out to be a very important day of my life. My avatar symbolizes my respect for Taito and their Puzzle/Bubble Bobble franchise in particular – as crazy as it sounds, I consider Bubble Bobble to be love in the form of a game. When it comes to video games I follow classic arcade/console games, most Shmups especially those by Compile, most fighters especially 2D ones and Virtua Fighter, RPGs such as Dragon Quest and Etrian Odyssey (respect for cartography and minimal yet charming stories), and I won’t shy away from the more contemporary minded genres.

Oh yeah, I’m 27 years of age. Hispanic/Latino/Whatever PC term people are supposed to be calling us now. Enjoy playing guitar mainly classical/traditional/folk/blues stuff. And so on and so forth.

That ends my introduction, or perhaps a stealth dating profile Ishaan suckered me (and the rest of us) into participating in. On a serious note, and saying this as someone who has not really kept up with the growth the community has experienced in the last year, this has been a great idea. Rather than allowing some of us to perceive the incoming masses as a giant collective of users who just showed up here, it helps to remind us that everyone here is an individual, a person, drawn to this place for their own well-intentioned reasons.

A happy late Valentine’s Day, or as I call the 15th…

Happy Cheap Chocolate Day, enjoy all those unsold discounted goodies.

  • Maimaniamama

Sigh……Finally. A place to introduce myself. My name is Alexis Matthews and this is the second time that I had to use the username Maimaniamama. Yes, I’ve been here before (not for long), but for some odd and unknown reason I have been banned. I guess it’s because I’ve been off topic. Don’t know. I waited for over three months and I couldn’t go back on. I don’t know what I did in the past, but I want to immediately apologize for anything that caused such banning.

So allow me to get started. This is rather long so if you don’t like text walls then please just don’t bother to read.

Anyways, I’m a 21 year online tutor. I do know a few people here outside of the internet (most notably Michael Stevens because he was a student of mine from time to time and I met him face to face because we actually live in the same neighborhood. That was supposed to be a secret, but I don’t see why I should continue to hide it). People outside of the internet have called me a very boring person MANY times, which I really dislike. Oh yes. Believe it or not but I have social anxiety disorder which causes me to not become socially interactive with others well. I’ve been like this since I was 12. I also get enraged very easily (even on the internet. Think some people on here seen me go overboard before) due to the things I experienced in the past which also caused me to have SAD. I won’t get into details about my past because it’s really long and I really don’t like to talk about it. Because of my fear of humiliation and whatever, I keep many things about me hidden from people outside the internet (including me being a gamer) because I’m really scared of what others will say about me (though not everyone. I do interact with a few people outside). So I usually interact with others on the internet not only because of me trying to become a stronger person and non-boring, but it is also one of the only places to become THE Alexis Matthew that I am (which is a fun and non-boring person lol). I’m really a nice person, so if I argue, get mad, or anything……just please don’t take it literally. I do make stupid mistakes, of course.

I started video gaming when I had an SNES and played the heck out of Super Mario World. That is when I loved gaming. Due to my phobia however, I always get my games online. I may joke that I don’t do that at times, but I really do only order online. SMW isn’t my most favorite game though. My most favorite games is the Advance War and Fire Emblem series due to have such a tactical system. I do watch anime and I also read manga. I really love to read. From books to manga to visual novels. I’ll read it all. I also do like sports and I’m addicted to soccer, swimming, and track.

I always wanted to join a community that talks about a variety of games, and Siliconera is honestly one of the best I seen so far IMO. I do appreciate many here for keeping Siliconera alive. Not just the mods, oh no. The commenters as well. Commenters I love the most here (although I really don’t have a favorite) is Michael Stevens and aoihana for always making me laugh. I also want to apologize that I do go really off topic at times. I also want to apologize to Michael, Samantha, and Tabitha (if she is reading this) for not know that Michael had a younger sister. That was the wrong time to ask. I usually did comment a lot before, but my computer recently died on me and I’m trying to get a new one, so I’ll be using the Steven siblings’ computers whenever I get the chance until I get enough money to acquire a new one. Any comments (including this one) will be directly from their computer, but also from me.

I hope everyone enjoys their time on Siliconera, and I give my thanks to all who kept me entertained and have been so nice towards me and towards others. Although it isn’t Valentines day anymore, I want to wish everyone a wonderful month. I won’t comment as frequently as before, but I’ll do what I can. Finally, whether or not I comment on here, I will always read everyone’s thoughts (good or bad), I will definitely have fun here nevertheless, and I hope Siliconera never changes and hope that the community will continue to grow for the better (I sure hope I don’t get banned for whatever reason again……Even if I do however, I’ll still have a wonderful time here).

I was wondering where you were all this time. You were using Tabitha’s computer I see. I just noticed you upstairs too! XD It’s fine. The secrets. They’re not THAT big anyway.

      • PoweredByHentai

Michael?  Has secrets?  How scandalous!  :P

    • http://www.crunchyroll.com/user/ArtFanIam Samantha Stevens

Oh dear. It’s quite alright really. The whole not know I’m Mickey’s sister. Totally fine and forgiven. Have a safe trip home now, and a have a wonderful month as well.

    • aoihana

Alexis, you truly are an amazing person, and I never would have guessed that you’ve suffered from such a disorder. You really aren’t boring at all!(。>。<。)

I can safely say that it has not been the same without you, and I’ve missed you very much, so I’m very happy to see you comment here, again. I know that you wont be able to comment as often now, but I will look forward to your next! (ノ>▽<。)ノ

Many people here miss you, too! Just the other day we were wondering where you had gone. I thought you had moved on, or got mad, or something!

As for your banning, that’s the absolute last thing that crossed my mind, and I’m honestly shocked. Honestly, I think that it’s some sort of mistake. You’ve nothing to apologize for, I believe.

From the very bottom of my heart, I wish you luck on your road to becoming a stronger person, and I absolutely know you can do it!

I hope to see more from you, and thank you very much for sharing! (◕‿◕✿)

      Good night! (◡‿◡✿)

      • Joanna

Agreed. Alexis didn’t deserve me to banned. It was probably a mistake.

    • Testsubject909

Here’s hoping your stay in Siliconera helps you well.

And best of luck with buying a new laptop or PC.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

This was really a honest and interesting text. Hope to read more from you.

And yeah, to stop caring what other thinks of you is always a good thing. ;) Did you read “No longer human” by chance?

    • IceRomancer

I kinda feel like giving you hug after reading that :P

    • Kitestwinblades

C-can totally relate to this T.T In almost every way.
      Same age and social difficulties.

I find that commenting is a huge stress reliever on this site because its YOUR posting and no one can interrupt it. The community is very nice and everything isn’t completely mainstream. They respect just about everything too. I have a lot of problems dealing with criticism in person and in some cases even in games. It just feels like there’s too much to factor in that it boggles the mind when in fact it should be very simple. Whisper chat is something I always favor unless I HAVE to say something. I prefer not to use mics in games unless I have too although its not like I cant. Fighting games might have even added a little bit of a reliever for me these days too. Having that power to win is just a boost in everything for me.

I also have a hard time retaliating to something that bothers me in person. And it doesn’t even have to be something that bothers me but rather something I have to respond to.

(Can I give my usual reply with a smart explanation or should I just be blunt to so they can understand faster. Oh wait that might be an insult to their intelligence… either way, crap!)

Just thinking about how they receive what I will say next just causes me to over-think or think REALLY carefully before speaking, slowing down the conversation. I’m slowly starting to improve upon this but in a bit of a careless way of reusing replies I’ve used before, provided the situation. It makes me feel like I don’t take into MIND who I’m taking to at the time. And if its someone I do take into Mind- prepare for another one of those mind breakdowns. That’s probably where people might find me boring.
      Or maybe entertaining, I haven’t a clue but I don’t really like it ._.

I don’t know how to explain but when I can just say something on this site, its like my biggest step forward to getting a message out. Feelings and whatnot but also opinions which I have the HARDEST time expressing. Its much easier to say what I like and feel iffy about. I really should have made a bio instead. I didn’t mention the games I like or anything but I still took up a LOT of space. For that, I apologize Mai/Alexis and I hope you continue to enjoy Siliconera as well because its like home to me with all sorts of interesting people X3

    • Joanna

You got banned? I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m glad you are back. You probably don’t know me, but I love reading your comments with Michael and Aoi. I’ll have to remember your new username now. Welcome back~ :)

And you are pretty charismatic, in my opinion.

  • http://twitter.com/Leivra Leivra

I’m kind of late but here is something about me:
I’m Leivra (that’s my nick name), I’m 21 and an IT student in a university. I’m a hardcore Tales fan. I spent 70% of my free time in playing games, and 30% in watching Japanese anime. I’m only interested in Japanese gaming, I have no interest at all in Western games (except what NaugtyDog creates). In RPG games, I only like Action/RPG and Real-time/RPG (I want to move and attack instead of sitting idle and choose a command and watch). As for favorite commentors, I don’t actually pick a favorite, but from what I read everyday, many of the comments are good and friendly, and it’s actually one of the reason why I like this website.

  • Yamaneko22

Whoops, missed that @_@ I’m here because it’s a fast and reliable source of info about jRPGs that I’m into (especially Tales, Suikoden series, Yasumi Matsuno games, anything by Vanillaware and Atlus too). Friendly and civilised community is another reason why I visit Siliconera pretty often;) You’re doing great job with Siliconera guys and gals, keep it up;)

btw Smth about me… Yamaneko means lynx in japanese. Yep, it’s from Chrono Cross;) I really loved his Feral Cats attack, so much that I nicknamed myself as Yamaneko :D Anyway, I’m 25yo guy from Poland, that is crazy about jrpgs. However, nowadays I spend more money on anime/VG PVC figures than games, but maybe it temporary @_@ Momohime got me into this hobby/addiction. http://myfigurecollection.net/item/27637_oboro_muramasa_momohime_1_8_alter_marvelous_entert
I really recommend this figure, it’s so beautiful and really worth it’s price… and it’s getting re-release soon btw ;) Get it so there will be more Vanillaware figures;) Since I’ve started this little figure off-topic, I must say that I like how sometimes siliconera gives news about pvc figs. I know you’re into vg mostly, but still hope that will happen from time to time in future too;)

  • IvanAzure

Well, I randomly met this site one day and have never left it afterwards. xD
Awesome people, well-written articles, varied topics on games (many of those which interest me somehow) and many other things makes this site one of my favorite ones in the internet. =D
So, uh, about me, I’m Ivan, I love JRPGs (and other kinds of games too, but JRPGs have taken most of my gaming life ever since my uncle bought a PS1 (when most people had already moved to the PS2 xD). :P
My first contact with gaming was the SNES (which was “found in the leftovers” my uncles left behind :P). I only had two games (a soccer one and a Buggs Bunny one), but I had an awesome time with them and I used to rent many games (since there was no way to buy a game where I lived). That was how I got to know some awesome games like Megaman (actually I played “Rockman 7″), Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, Captain Commando, Bomberman (Super Bomberman 3,4 and 5), etc.
After some years having my SNES, my uncle had moved to our house and played with me from time to time. When I was about 11 years old, he bought a PS1 (his dream was to have one ^^) and I got to play some other awesome games, but the most interesting fact was my contact with JRPGs (thanks to my friends and my love for anime-esque stuff). However I had a love/hate relationship with my first JRPG (Digimon World 3) because I felt the game seemed incomplete somehow. I thought the game ending was something that shouldn’t have happened as the game’s ending shows the main character going back to “Digimon Online”. So, despite never having had played some game with that feature before DW3, I was hoping for a “New Game +” or a Pokemon-esque continuation. Nowadays, I actually feel like the game wasn’t that bad and that if the ending wasn’t there, the game would probably need some extra things it didn’t have. :P
My first contact with the Final Fantasy series was there too (Final Fantasy V).

So, uh, in sum, nowadays I own a PS2 and a PSP (my SNES died =/ ). My favorite game genre is JRPGs and my favorite series are “Tales of”, Kingdom Hearts, Megaman and Kirby. I have a love/hate relationship with Sony (because I’m a Nintendo fanboy but I only own Sony game devices xD). I absolutely love Siliconera thanks to the awesome articles and commenters here. And I’ve had a “reencounter” with anime recently after I started watching Fairy Tail (my favorite long-running anime series), though my favorite one is Angel Beats!, which I also watched recently. I also went back to watching Digimon thanks to Xros Wars, which is one of my favorite seasons. :)
    Ok, enough about that.  ^_^’
Oh, my favoite commenter is Aoihana.~ (◕‿◕✿)

  • http://demyxluver1xxandra.deviantart.com/ C.Guzman

EDIT: My name is /still/ visable…ugh, oh well! I prefer Demy as I said :)

I’m pretty bad at writing introductions, but here goes!

My name was visible on here (as C.Guzman) and I changed it to Demy because that’s what I prefer to be called hahha.I don’t really remember how I got here, but before Silliconera I was a member of Kotaku…and eventually I couldn’t handle the community anymore, took my gold star and ran far, far away. I feel that this community is a lot more lively and I haven’t really met people here, but I can definitively see that there’s a lot of friendliness and that’s what keeps me here along with the fantastic articles of course :)

To keep it short, I enjoy J/RPG’s, BL games and I draw a lot. I don’t watch anime as much as I used to, but my all time favorite is Tiger & Bunny (it’s what brought me back to anime!)I think that’s pretty much it, I don’t want to bore anyone (  ~ o ~);;Y’all can ask me questions too if you’d like!

    • z_merquise

Haha, hell yeah! Tiger and Bunny!! That’s the recent anime that I watched and I really liked it. I read that there would be a second season for that show.

      • http://demyxluver1xxandra.deviantart.com/ C.Guzman

Agreed! I’m still waiting for what the 2 movies will be about. I hope I get to see them too. The end of season 1 left a lot to be explained.

  • http://www.angryrabbit.com/ RamuneIgasu

How did I miss this? I’m relatively a newcomer as far as commenting on this site goes. I generally go by just Ramune, but I’ve been known as Ramune Rabbit on the net, and my Twitter account’s the same as this site’s. I sort of re-discovered Siliconera when a co-worker of mine was telling me to add the website as a shortcut on my iPhone. Bookmarked it instead and I’ve been a frequent visitor ever since. Occasionally I’ll add my 2¢, but only to add to the conversation or witty banter that’s going on.

My gaming history is interesting. When I was 4 I remember going to a pond house’s arcade area, and Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Pole Position II, and Zaxxon were what introduced me to the concept of videod games. Wasn’t until I chose the NES out of the Sega Master System and Atari 2600 that I knew I was a gamer for life. My genres are usually Platformers, J-RPGs of all kinds, shmups, and fighters dispite my general suckiness.

PSN and Xbox Live ID is Ramurabb
Favorite commentor is Aoihana, as he/she always puts a smile on my face with the cute emoticons. ^_^

Look forward to more fun conversations this year with you guys!

  • Kitestwinblades

Totally missed this and went overboard with a response below XD

My name Christian- Chris for short works fine, although I’ve rather gotten use to the name Kites- plural lol. I was born at the start of the 90′s so I experienced a LOT over the past years. I started gaming when my parents got me a Sega Saturn years ago and I’ve been addicted to them since! I had 3 games- Virtual Fighter, Cop, and Daytona racer. That pretty much got me set for EVERY game in my entire life except Rpg’s. It wasn’t until I got a Gameboy color and played Pokemon and Dragon warrior: Monsters until I finally got a taste of what japan had to offer. Absolutely addicted, its been more about the east and less about the west for me ever since- with the exception of hit titles in the US.

When I got a PS2 I went back and played PS1 hit JRPGs but also started the new ones. I bought 6 games as SOON as I got mines: Star Ocean 3, .hack//infection, Disgaea 1, Phantom Brave, Final fantasy X, and Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark tournament. With the exception of the Yu Yu Hakusho game(I love watching anime, especially things on Toonami, just didn’t like this game lol), This was the BEST moment of my life!

.Hack was absolutely amazing to me. I had dial-up and then this thing rolls up lol Simulated online RPG with a plot so interesting at the beginning it was like a mystery/horror to me(poor comatose friends) lol  Don’t even get me started on the random dungeons and weapon design XD. Playing these games gave me a hero vibe(kinda like a detective too!) and it was something I wanted to relate to while playing. While the set pieces where perfect for a heroic vibe in all the other games, Kite struck me as a notable hero. Which is why I have so much respect to the franchises and him.

I current own a PS3 and my PSN name is practically the same -just with an underscore after Kites. I Play fighting games a lot more these days but my respect to RPG’s is still there. I actually don’t own a Wii so you can imagine how much fun I’ll have when i go back and play everything I missed from the GameCube AND the Wii. I did however- played Tales of Symphonia and I’m looking forward to Grace next month.

I’d just like to say that every last one of you is the best commentor in my book X3 I never read anything that I dont think myself or I cant agree with. And If I don’t in some ways, there’s always SOMETHING that I partially STILL agree with. You all make very good points and lets be honest, we REALLY want those games to come to the West XD Sorry I’m a WEEK late, but happy V-day Siliconera.

  • Joanna

Late as always, but I do want to take this chance to thank the staff for all their hard work. I really appreciate how many articles Spencer and Ishaan do on a daily basis. It must be tough to write so many articles. Jenni, I really appreciate the coverage for otome games you give. It was siliconera that introduced me to the genre, so thanks again. :) Drakos, I appreciate how hard you and Ishaan work to keep the community from devolving into a mash of hatred and console warfare. Your playtest was awesome too. Looking forward to more~ And as always, I love the community and members. I won’t name names, but I’ve replied to most of my favourites members already just to personally tell you that I enjoy your contributions. But honestly the whole community is great :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Hi, I am Dylan. I started to get interested in anime and gaming during my middle school years and now I can’t live w/out them. (ex. games cuz I cant afford to buy gaming devices. But I do play arcade games). One of my first thing to do when browsing the web is visit Siliconera 1st. I been visiting it so long I can’t remember when I just started. My fav. game are JRPG (even though I have yet to get my hands on them ex. Pokemon which i play using my neighbour Gameboy).

  • http://talesattbokmph.wordpress.com/ Setsuryuu (TBOkmph)

I have been without much time lately to check out here (or with the people on twitter) but I figured it would be good to at least make this quick comment about how I love the place before the comments here a closed.

It’s the format you made here. From how you deliver the news and how you participate and manage the community. You people make things work; and in the internet, specially in gaming sites, that’s not an ordinary thing to see. No wonder this place only attracts the best kinds of people in the comments. xP So I’m basically giving my appreciation to all of you who ever logged in this website! Keep it up! XD

I’ve totally missed the party due to semester finals thus I’m gonna try my luck next year. Really glad I’ve stumbled upon SE, great site, amazingly diverse community. A real joy getting to know the community better.

In case somebody does actually read this: Hi, I’m Roland and I’ll try introducing myself properly at next year’s event.

Video game stories from other sites on the web. These links leave Siliconera.
