Anarchy Reigns May Not Make Its US And European Release Date

By Ishaan . May 25, 2012 . 9:30am

Anarchy Reigns is complete and on track for its Japanese release on July 5th, but Sega have changed the game’s North American and European release date to “TBC” (To be confirmed). The news comes via PlatinumGames’ development blog, where they write:

“Finally, we break the bad news about Anarchy Reigns US/EU release date – SEGA has decided to change the date to TBC. While our work on the game is finished, localized, and ready to go, as publisher, SEGA gets to make the final decision as to when it is released. The Japanese release date, however, remains unchanged for July 5, 2012.”

Recently, PlatinumGames revealed two new characters for Anarchy Reigns—Max and Douglas—who you can take a look at here. Above is the game’s Japanese launch trailer. We’ll keep an eye out for when Sega provide an update on the game’s western release.

Man i was so looking forward to this one…

  • Shadowman

  • Oh COME ON.

  • XiaomuArisu

    Still better then a cancelation.
    Just bring it!

    •  Yes….yes. Anything’s better than a cancellation.

    • Luna Kazemaru

       True….very true.

    • z_merquise

You know, when I read “TBC”, I thought it’s To Be Cancelled.

F—! This is the game I’m really looking forward to for the coming months (other than Gravity Rush) and this happened. I really don’t like this.

Yeah, I do agree with you. It’s better than saying that it’s cancelled.

    • omeganeko

Always got to find the silver lining :)

    • cj_iwakura

I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high. Be prepared for the worst.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Oh come on! You can’t cock tease us with new character trailers and launch trailers, the go all undecided on us! The summer draught is primetime for games like this to come into the spotlight with little competition.

    • Anime10121

Still debating whether Bayonetta is a big enough incentive for me to want this game or not.

In ref. to yo vid! I CAN NOT WAIT for more info on Boondocks season 4.  I miss the awesomness of that show!

      • Anarchy Reigns is still looking to be a great game, so Bayonetta only adds more incentive.

        • Anime10121

Ima have to try out the demo when it releases on the JPN PSN next week first.  Im still trying to figure out how the game actually works, the trailers admittedly have been very nice, but most trailers are.  Platinum being its developer and Bayonetta and Jack (from Madworld) being characters in it are the only reason I’ve been keeping tabs on the game, because honestly to me the rest of the characters looks kinda bland (Bayonetta is ugly to but dat gameplay).  Still though I’m hoping for the best and hope the demo will excite me!

  • amagidyne

I’m not even joking anymore. This is getting unpleasant.

    • Locklear93

Sega seems to be one of the worst managed major companies in the industry.  The things they publish, and the things they pass on, are baffling.  There are definite, obvious bright spots (Yakuza–though it took them a while to figure out what customers expected of the franchise, Bayonetta, and so on), but then they keep pushing mediocre Sonic games and worse (was anyone really excited for Sega Superstars Tennis?) and leaving things people want by the wayside.

      • raymk

I would have been excited for sega superstars tennis if it actually had a lot of sega superstars from the 90’s like shinobi or streets of rage characters.

      • amagidyne

What really disturbs me is the (unconfirmed) rumor that Sega canceled Bayonetta 2 as a part of their restructuring. If it turns out to be true then I’ll be snarling and gnashing my teeth so hard I won’t be able to communicate in any human language for the next couple of years.

Needless to say, I really, really, really hope it isn’t true.

        • Locklear93

I’m aware of the rumor, and yeah, I left it out of my post because I couldn’t substantiate it, and didn’t want to bash Sega on rumors, but it definitely factors into my opinion of them these days.  I’m more inclined to believe it than not.

Love the third one since I remember that episode from the British comedy The IT Crowd. That last one, very appropriate, is just so funny. Do you know which anime it’s from?

All of them totally sum up the frustration everyone is feeling about this. I was totally looking forward to reading my fellow readers’ views on the game.

      • Luna Kazemaru

Can’t remember where that last one is from.

        • usagi_san

          That’s all right.

    • Kitestwinblades

Definitely the last one.  Oh Don’t worry- its not me jumping out the window.  I’m just the guy watching at the end. See the guy jumping out is the Anarchy(Reigns), and the…

(what IS that, a bird? Cat with a helicopter tail? It’s hilarious xD) Cat-chopper

is whats keeping it from sweet release. r.r; which i would assume would be the pavement(not that the game is gonna suck or anything, just an example) “glorious impact” I suppose ._.
But you know… Sega-copter to the rescue. The last one Does look very familiar though. I swear I’ll fine the name!

  • z_merquise

Yeah, that’s just great, Sega! First, Valkyria Chronicles 3 and now this. What’s with their decision?

I think July is the perfect time to release this game since there won’t be much competition at that time. Sega would be out of their freakin’ minds if they decided to release it the same date where the latest games from the vagillion-selling franchises are released.

This is awful. Like diarrhea made of sadness and anger.

. . . nice trailer from the game, by the way. It just made the delay more painful.

  • Godmars

And there was much – WHAT THE F***!?!

Though I get the sickening feeling this might have to do timed exclusivity on one system.

  • Domii

Im not one to spew hate on these boards, but I just can’t comprehend how Capcom gets so much hate when Sega do much worst in IMO, yet they get a pass? I’m not saying to hate either one of them as I like them both, but sometimes Sega’s business decisions really get on my nerves since platinum are one of my favorite developers.

When Sega doesn’t show no marketing support for our favorite games, that’s the same thing as letting them die a slow painful death, which is bad for us gamers. Bayonetta, VC, vanquish, and much more, could of had more success and sequels, but Sega didn’t give a damn.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Maybe you need to read these comments again? And Sega does get alot of hate even now people still are pissed about VC3 not coming to the west along with their bad marketing. Its not as bad as Capcom because of you know…DLC :/

    • Godmars

Where Sega cancels or fails to advertise games, puts something like this in release limbo when its obviously a western tailored game, Capcom sells half games at full price, have the remaining half on the disc calling it paid DLC, and then release a new version of the same game removing features which they either then charge you as DLC, or put it back in a later “updated” version.

Sega’s odd actions involve one action upon one game and are notably well apart. Capcom’s are multiple and one after the other.

    • um sega gets mad hate – where you been

    • cj_iwakura

Sega has always made quality games, and suffered from horrible management. Nothing’s changed, except now all their quality is outsourced or done by third parties they publish for.

      • Zenkaider

How’s that? Many SEGA franchise’s are still made by SEGA,even if it is by SEGA’s big name studio’s like the Ryu Ga Gotoku series.

        Just that,other than that,it’s true.

        • cj_iwakura

Exception to the rule, probably the only genuinely talented team they have left. Overworks and Smilebit are long gone.

          • Zenkaider

What about Sonic Team? And the Valkyria Chronicles guys?Just because the third was developed by…the same guys as Shining Blade[sorry, don’t remember the name] doesn’t mean they left.

Out of curiosity, who were Smilebit? And how Overworks done for, never learnt how that happened.

    •  Sega is just short of a complete flop in the States, which is probably why you won’t see as much hate from all sides, since they haven’t been all that relevant in some parts of the world…

  • Cephrien

    Son of a BITCHH. D:

Stop doing this to me, Sega.

  • Altritter

Does Sega just think July is a bad time to release it? Reminds me of the inane Bayonetta delay; that one didn’t really make any sense either.

  • DeadTrigger

I hope they don’t pull this BS with Yakuza 5.

Oh, SEGA… With a statement like this, who needs to write a negative retaliation.

  • JustaGenericUser

Sega used to be so good. Why.

  • What is this…I don’t even…

I always believed it was a good thing -for- sega to publish the P* games, since they are freaking awesome and sega could use some high profile stuff, BUT….they are definitely not treating P* with the love they deserve…..first shitty marketing and now this..bah…

  • Guest

The release date changed. Doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be released. Look:

“Finally, we break the bad news about Anarchy Reigns US/EU release date – SEGA has decided to change the date to TBC. As long as it will come out of Japan, then I can wait. ._.

    •  Who said anything about the game not being released?

      • Guest

That doesn’t matter. He would rather wait for the game to have confirmed date. At least Sega isn’t going to leave it only available in Japan, so it’s not as bad as people think. They just probably need to wait longer than Japan (which is common to games such as this anyway). That’s what he’s saying.

        • Guest

          Yes. Thank you, Sammy. X3

    • Code

      Yeah I can see a lot of people potentially jumping to the conclusion that the game won’t get released now z__z’ Honestly had it made it’s July date I’d have been happy, but I can understand the game needing a little more time for localization for it’s online play outside of Japan owo;

A lot of Japanese games with online modes from what I’ve learned, are first built around for only being played within Japan, and tend to have lower then normal settings when it comes to things like delay, since it’s only being played prefecture to prefecture.

So when it comes to releasing these games on a global scale, often they have to tweak things, to change buffering, delays, and such for a larger scale. A game like this where it’s almost all online is probably going to require additional work to keep it running smoothly on a global scale. But Platinum has never had any long-delays, so I figure we’ll get a date, release soon owo

Gee Sega, continuing to hammer those nails into your own coffin, eh?

It’s boneheaded stupidity like this and every other marketing decision over the past decade that have brought Sega (of America and of Europe) into the dire straights that they currently face. I feel no pity for Sega any longer, because it’s almost like they WANT to have their offices closed. -_-

    • LuciferD666

Not necassarily. This is probably due to their(Sega’s) financial problems.Shipment is pretty costly nowadays.P+ are based in Japan,It is much easier to ship in home country than over sea. They don’t want to die as a company(no company does),

I am kinda furious myself. But marketing managers can’t  just push shipment windows when they want. They are not in the power. There is Now or Never, and then there’s Never or Later.

      • VenerableSage

If the game is squared away and completely localized as the quote says, the ONLY reason why Sega would push it back (unless the other regions are cancelling it) would be a large marketing push (HA!) and that they don’t feel like they have enough time between now and July for that to take effect. There is basically NOTHING coming out at the start of July of note, meaning that it would be a perfect time to release the title; one of the reasons that Sega’s offerings as of late have sold (relatively) poorly is often that there were competing titles taking away sales (and lack of marketing).

Sega’s management staff are so largely incompetent that it’s their own fault that the America and European divisions have had to cut back on what they’re bringing out, hence why I no longer have any pity for them. They’ve repeatedly shot themselves in the foot and putting a TBC date seems to only be continuing this trend. With E3 just over a week away, they could be waiting to unveil a finalized date then, but why not just keep the tentative July release date until the expo when they release a statement changing it? Setting it to TBC just screams that there’s something afoot here.

        • LuciferD666

I made a hypothesis on the fact that it might be due to their current financial crisis. But it is all up to marketing on this one though.P+ said the games done. But it’s Sega’s move now.

The quote does not say “only”. The quote merely states its Sega’s choice. They are the ones with the hammer right now. From my understanding there are clearly problems that are among Sega. But who knows for sure. You can’t blame them because you think it’s one way, and it may be another.I’d rather a TBC than a discontinued localization(but that’s me).

No one knows what’s going on behind the lines. We can all make assumptions and calculations, But as long as you’re not directly involved in the production of the game or company. It’s really all irrelavant.

No “HA!”, No insults,no puns. But it’s just my opinion on the matter. However,it is true that unless you’re at Sega, it’s unsafe to make assumptions on their way of business.

      • Domii

Ok then how you explain the lack of marketing for the good games that ARE already out the door?

        • LuciferD666

Look 2 comments below. It’s just speculation.

  • ArcadiaSymphonia

This really sucks i just hope it dosen’t go through developement hell but i doubt it will especially since the japanese date is still intact

    •  If it’s just localization I don’t see any need for concern over that.

  • boundries_san

This again shows how bad Sega management is.T_T

THey should release the game on July lol as July does not had so many competition especially Diablo 3 has been released here. Sega should also advertised more on this game as i believe even in game store now, when i asked them about this game, they will ask me what i am smoking here?

Hope that Sega will quickly find a good marketing manager that will be able to help them from this pinch. As many of their release is still quality title but most of them suffer from low sale here.

  • Solomon_Kano

That’s unfortunate. There’s some great stuff this year to keep me busy, but I was definitely looking forward to this.

  • kinda reminds me of madworld….only in color lol.

looking foward to this wacky game.

    •  Jack an’ Black Baron iz in da game………so datz not surprisin’.

  • Taiyz

Hey guys, if you read Platinum’s comments on other sites (X360A, Eurogamer) it seems like they’re suggesting that fans import the game; the English localization is complete and in the Japanese version.

I hit the English forums, and while they presumably can’t directly tell us to import because then they’d be taking away future sales from their partner, Sega, I found this:

    I know what I’m doing.

  • Well this sucks, but if what Taiyz said is true, then PlayAsia here I come. It’s what I did with Bayonetta.

  • Oversoul

If anyone’s wondering why Sega’s marketing division is so awful, I personally emailed Darren Williams last week about this. He’s the president of Sega of America’s marketing division.

They laid him and I’m assuming his whole division off.
    It answers a few questions.

    • Göran Isacson

Huh. Does that mean they got laid off because they’re bad at their job, or did they get laid off because SEGA’s in dire straits and without their division SEGA’s marketing is suffering?

  • Well that settles it.  I’m buying this game day-one.  Battle Royale is 16 players!  That is awesome!

I hope the US release comes soon.  Sega shouldn’t hold it off until November because it just won’t compete with the existing IPs.  Perhaps in September or October, no sooner or later.

I have a hunch that Sega may be saving it for an E3 announcement to show off this trailer in localized form.  Fingers crossed.

  • Göran Isacson

My heart is filled with sorrow, sadness, and a distinctive lack of overwhelming levels of testosterone. I was hoping Anarchy reigns could be the booster shot I required, but apparently not…
