A Message For The Siliconera Community

By Ishaan . June 3, 2012 . 10:01am

As everyone is aware, in just a day from now, we’re going to be bang in the middle of E3. For many of us, this is the equivalent of a birthday and Christmas both rolled into one. Developers from the world over will convene to show us the very best they have to offer, and sites like ours will update all day long to keep up with the torrent of news and impressions and interviews we gather from the show floor. It’ll be magical (hopefully).

As we go into E3 week, I’d like to remind everyone of the need to remain respectful throughout the event and beyond. One of the nicer things about Siliconera is that we have a fairly decent community in comparison to a lot of other websites on the Internet, and our hope is that it will get even better in time. In order to help achieve this goal, we’ve started to reach out to members of the community to help keep things on track by making sure that our readers feel welcome and respected.

I’d like to introduce two of our new moderators from within the community today—DrakosAmatras, who some of you know has been contributing to the site for a while now, and M’iau M’iaut, who is one of the oldest community members. M’iau was spearheading discussions in the comments before I even joined the site as a member of staff. From now on, they’ll be watching the comments, making sure no one feels threatened or insulted, keeping the trolls away, and trying to “keep things clean”. I hope you’ll give them the same respect that you give other members of our staff, and lend them your support in maintaining a healthy community.

This is also a good time to remind everyone of our site rules. Please give these a good read and try to stick to them:

  1. Read before you write: If you’re glossing over a post in a hurry, that’s fine. If you intend to enter the discussion, make sure to read the full post properly.

  2. Think before you write: What you say and post on the site has an impact. Comments that generate discussion are highly encouraged. On that note, flaming is in no way constructive, and should be avoided.

  3. Don’t clog the comments with console requests: We’re sorry that "super awesome game X" isn’t available for a specific console, but spamming the comments with "why isn’t this for NeoGeo Pocket" isn’t going to make it happen. Each console, in every generation, has exclusive titles and also misses out on select games. Try to enjoy what you have!

  4. Cogitate, then criticize: We get that not everything is going to be your cup of tea and you have every right to voice your disdain on Siliconera. We ask that you elaborate your point when doing so. Subtle trolling and snarky remarks about how you hate a developer aren’t going to cut it. Don’t repeat your argument every time a certain topic or game comes up either. If you articulated your point well the first time, you won’t have to!

  5. Keep an open mind: Siliconera covers a wide variety of titles and we realize not every game is going to click with every reader. Don’t care for a particular game? OK, cool, but there’s no need to ridicule others for enjoying it

That’s all for now. If you guys have any questions, ask away in the comments and we’ll be more than happy to answer them. AND LET THE E3 FESTIVITIES BEGIN!

Read more stories about on Siliconera.

  • Zonic505

Congrats to the 2 new mods & looking forward to all the E3 news.

  • First of all: Yay for our new mods~! Thanks for helping out with the maintenance, guys. Can’t think of a lot more people who are better qualified.

As for the E3 festivities, I’m already knee deep in opened tabs of trailers/news articles to read. I’m ready to get savage.

  • Now we just have to force them to read this…..

  • aoihana

Ah, I’ve had the chance to see our new moderators in action yesterday, and I have to say, I’m very excited. I’m excited to see that we’ll have more moderation in the comments, to keep the atmosphere that has made Siliconera my go-to for games, anime, and everything in between.

I know that you’ll do great DrakosAmatras, you’ve been helping out in the community, being the voice of reason and trying to keep the peace for some time now. Now that it’s official, I’m sure your past proactive approach will transition well.

M’iau M’iaut, I haven’t had the chance to see you much around here, but I know that you’re a long time member and reader of the site, and I’ve seen your moderation yesterday, and I know you’ll do a great job. Your respectful, but firm.

I’m genuinely happy to have you both as moderators, you’ll be of great benefit to the site, but the community, too.

    • Christopher Nunes

      Fight for everlasting peace!

Anyway, I’m totally excited! What about you Aoi? Anything you’ve heard of E3 that you’re interest in? I’m looking forward to more Wii U info, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and possible localization announcement for some games… maybe like Tales of Xillia!

      • aoihana

I’m most excited for the Wii U! I want to see the presentations they give, and the kind of games that’ll be coming for it. I’m really interested in the tablet controller, I think there’s so much potential for it, so it’ll be interesting to see all the ways it’ll be utilized.

I’m also looking forward to hearing about the Vita, and their lineup on the Western front. Hopefully Sony announces a White Vita for other territories, too.

I want more coverage on Far Cry 3, too!

        • Christopher Nunes

          Amen! ^_^

    • Hey, thanks. I’m not an experienced user, so I’ve always been doing just whatever I can. I’m glad my efforts meant something to the community, and I won’t let it down.

    • Testsubject909

Think we should make them a theme song?

  • pothier.adrien

    • Testsubject909

Damnit, each time I see a person with a prinny avatar cheering, it makes me want to toss them to make cheerful fireworks…

  • LynxAmali

    Did some one say “Mods?!”

As for the E3 news, I shall be ready. Hopefully. Maybe.

Oh hell, I’m not going to be ready! I’m never ready for E3!

  • Alex Sargeant

Aye sir! I promise not to moan if there’s no news on Type-0. Or at least I’ll do so internally.

    • You know there won’t be Alex. xD I have given up any hope for that game coming here.

      • Farid Belkacemi

         It’s coming… I can feel it ;)

        • lol If it were true I would literally die on the spot. xD I am not joking I’d have like a heart attack and an aneurysm simultaneously.

          • Farid Belkacemi

Piece of advice : take a deep breath before watching sony’s conference :D

And if you wanna know, I’ll do the same lol

          • *takes some sort of pill* xD

          • boundries_san

Ur body should be ready lol.^^

          • That joke isn’t even funny. >_<; However my body is Reggie. ;)

  • Nyandroid

Good luck to the new mods!
And let the games begin!!  ΦwΦ~

  • Paradox me

…but spamming the comments with “why isn’t this for Neo Geo Pocket” isn’t going to make it happen.

The sooner everyone accepts the fact that the Neo Geo Pocket is the future, the sooner comments like this will disappear.

I don’t mean to ruffle any feathers here and I think it’s cute that you all cling to these silly Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft thingies, but c’mon. You might as well be supporting the Dreamcast. They’re on their way out.

    SNK all the way!

    • We all know consoles are doomed and tablets/browser are the future anyway.

      • If that were really true I would be super sad but hey it would save me money on buying actually y’know good games (console/portable).

        • I honestly don’t think the kinds of games we like will ever really go away. At the end of the day, this is still a creative industry. Yeah, people are in it to make a living at the end of the day, but creators are also passionate about their work.

          • Yah… I dunno… let us not think of that until it actually happens.

      • Tom_Phoenix

Indeed. That 2 million you invested in Zynga shares was one of the wisest financial decisions you ever made, wasn’t it, Ishaan?

        • You have no idea. Once this next deal comes through, I’m going to be puffing expensive cigars in my golden bathtub while the rest of you are off playing games. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

      • MrRobbyM

3DS? More like 3DSux amirite lulz. Ipad ftw.

        • Testsubject909

          Ipad or Ipad2?

      • Farid Belkacemi

What ? Only Nintendo is doomed ! I guess you didn’t watch the news for a really long time :p

      • z_merquise

        The Future is Social (games)!!

    • M’iau M’iaut

All these many years later, nothing beats that thumbstick!

      • Imagine a future of gaming features touchscreen that causes skin irritation…

    • Exkaiser

I’ve been saying the same thing about the Wonderswan for years, but no one believes me.

      • M’iau M’iaut

I remember when we were actually supposed to get that! Think I even had reserve monies down through yes, SoftwareEtc.

Yes, I do realize how much that sentence dates me.

    • *sigh* The poor Dreamcast… Gone before it’s time. But not forgotten. ^_^

    • What’s this? You guys really think Neo Geo Pocket and Wonderswan are going to triumph? Get real, the Virtual Boy is the future! Those sexy red lines are the harbingers of your doom!

    • z_merquise

      The Future is Now!!!

I’m a bit worried that they’re so quiet in years and all I see from them these days are ports of their old games (which isn’t really bad) and a bunch of social and pachinko games.

    • boundries_san

      Sega Saturn FTW!!!

  • Daniel T

    • M’iau M’iaut

Welcome to the site! If you can’t read this article on your device and post, I must humbly advise you (as my first official mod duty) that rule #1 is to read before posting.

Breaking rule #4 is close, but I can let that one go for now. Just be aware, torrents of information existed long before BITtorrents of data!

      • I think he might be joking… though he might not be. lol I hate that he is caps locking it up. That is just annoying.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Of course he is. I appreciate that in joking, he was nice enough to provide one post ‘breaking’ so many of the rules. Nothing could be more instructive!

          • >_<; I never said anything against him not doing anything bad. I just thought… eh whatever. Sorry.

        • M’iau M’iaut

All good sir. Thank you for being a member of the site!

          • Hmm? O_o Yah… no problem? xD I dunno what just happened, but ok.

    • Testsubject909

      Can’t tell if serious….

  • I’m really happy the site has written this, it’s one of the reasons I respect Siliconera so much. We have such a nice community here, and it’s nice to see the staff doing their best to preserve that.

This is actually one of the few gaming website communities I participate in. I can actually write a thought provoking comment and have that develop into a conversation without being ridiculed, or participate in a joke with a number of people and not have it turn hurtful, I can voice my excitement for a game that would be considered obscure on other sites, but here it’ll be popular.

Thanks Siliconera for being so great.

  • This should be a intro or “About” page to be put up in the navigation bar or something…

Congrats to the two mods… Even thought I’m still new here, hope you two will do a good job…

    • MrRobbyM

I agree. I was a recent offender of rule #3 and didn’t really know it was a bad thing around here because I didn’t see a rules page.

      • It’s unfortunate though…. I can’t make jokes like “Why is this game not made for the Atari 2600???” anymore…. *Sigh*

        • Testsubject909

Could you make a joke like “Why isn’t this game a pen and paper RPG!?” or would that be pushing it too much?

    • The unfortunate aspect of creating an “Intro” or “About” page is most people are going to ignore it unless they’re forced to check it. I know I wouldn’t ever think of checking such a page until someone told me to do so. Not even a disclaimer above the comments area would do it because such a disclaimer looks like generic, run of the mill stuff where you just figure they’re the usual rules.

  • I will try to be on my bestest behavior Ishaan.

  • Christopher Nunes

Yes sir! I’m always on my best behavior and I like being friendly so it’s no problem at all! Can’t wait to see what exciting news are going to be at E3!

I can’t wait to hear everyone else’s opinions on the games and console! I wonder if the Wii U will still be called that or be renamed (I think some people think it’s going to be changed like the Revolution name for the Wii originally, but I think it will stay seeing as it’s very similar to the Wii in appearance and gameplay control(?)).

    Monday can’t come soon enough!

    • I think Nintendo has already proven to us in several ways that it is indeed staying Wii U.

      • Christopher Nunes

        I agree.

The name was strange at first, but I got use to it. I think they’re still going with an easy name that everyone worldwide will have no problem remembering or saying, like with the Wii.

I think there’s some people going to complain about the name, but they have to accept that’s the official name for the next Nintendo console.

        • Yah. Personally I have no qualms with the name. If it had a completely different name I would be happy, stay the same I am happy. I don’t care about names it is the games/hardware that matter.

    • While I’m not excited for Wiiu, I’m interested on what it will have and its plans for it… The price and region locking(which probably will be) are the key factors of making me want it or not…

      • Christopher Nunes

I hate region-locking, I mean what’s the point to it? To prevent piracy? Something else? I fail to understand why that must be on consoles and handheld.

  • malek86

I’m all for “Live and let live”, but I do believe that in some extreme cases, people should be kept in line to avoid unnecessary trouble. So I welcome the news. Good luck to you two!

And now let’s wait for our (possibly un)eventful E3.

    • MrRobbyM

I’m not expecting anything that great except the off chance of a new Souls game announcement. Nintendo will probably dominate E3 this year. I just don’t see anything Sony and MS can pull out of their hat this year. Nintendo and third party games will be the biggest thing this E3 I think.

      • Sony already did blew my mind with a PSVita game this afternoon… But I agree that Nintendo and third party games should be the biggest thing this E3…

        • Testsubject909

Which one? Just logged in on Siliconera and… I might find the article before you reply but still, would like to know.

      • malek86

I’m not really expecting much from Nintendo either, actually. They already unveiled the Wii U, so whatever they show, most of the surprise effect will be gone.

I wonder if we will get some good surprise announcement from one of the big publishers instead.

  • Beautiful Daisy ♥

It’s the most wonderful time of the year~ for us gamers right? Here’s to hoping everyone plays nice with one another and has a good time ^_^
And I believe we are in good hands with these new moderators~ I’ve read their comments before and I know that they are reasonable peace-keepers XD. In any case, I will be on my best behavior. I’m still new here by Siliconera-user standards, but I’ve never had a problem following these rules before so why change now? ^_^

    • Testsubject909

Well, E3, TGS and PAX… You’ve got your choices here really.

edit: For most wonderful time of the year.

edit2: Or the release date of a highly anticipated game.

  • M’iau M’iaut

Thanks for the nice posts siliconera! While this is not a duty I take lightly, it is a duty I hope I need to perform as little as possible! I like friendly reminders and to show the way with proper behavior first, rather than having to take higher levels of action.

That being said, I apologize now for any of my own past comments that did not live up to the rules outlined above. I look forward to returning to a more active life (chatting that is) throughout the SE threads.

    • MrRobbyM

Oh there you are! I don’t see you around much which I just voiced in my comment. Well anyways, nice to see you.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Yes,  left the fold a bit as an active poster but never stopped lurking, selective posting or chatting up vets like Yui, Aoshi, Li and WildArms on twitter. Adding new folks to the siliconera fold is always for the best, but it can be hard to find time away from folks who have become actual friends.

I shall however find that time!

    • Testsubject909

No worries, we’re all humans. Expecting perfection out of us is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

  • revenent hell

Im particularly a fan of the “Keep an open mind” eventhough I can get more than a little stuborn in my views its more than a little rediculous to me how many people seem to overlook others have an opinion to and have a right to voice it.
Just because “you” like or dislike something dosent mean everyone else will walk along the same decisive path as “you” and its unfair to dismiss a persons thoughts because “you” dont agree with them.
Just like someone can claim “This game is godlike” with their reasons why another should be able to refute that with their reasons of why as well. Fair is fair after all.

and its been forever since someones mentiond the NeoGeo :D I shouldnt feel old its not THAT old of a system right? …I wonder what news this E3 will have…Hopefully alot of stuff I wish to hear about.

    • MrRobbyM

I agree, but it’s *ridiculous* not “rediculous”. Just helping! ^_^

      • revenent hell

I miss the days of handwriting…when it comes to keys I cant seem to spell for the life of me…off to edit Thanx :P

        • Nyandroid

I have a bad habit of leaving out whole words. My fingers like to betray me. uwu;~

          • revenent hell

Well even if im not agreeing with a person im the type to prefer people telling me I made a mistake….otherwise how am I to know?…
I know theres spellcheck and whatnot but im not a fan of that since it realy dosent help me remember the correct spelling…..
            Keyboards make me stupid…period.

  • MrRobbyM

Welcome, mods. I easily recognize DarkosAmatras but haven’t seen M’iau much.

I’m glad the article was posted, especially right before E3. I’m sure there will be an explosion of comments from new people so this might help contain some of the untamed commenters.

    *grabs lasso*

    • Testsubject909

And then we’ll play dress up with the ones we catch and tame?

  • XypherCode

Congrats to the new Mods :D

  • Farid Belkacemi

    So… Where’s the BUFFET ishaan ? xD

  • Why can’t we get Monster Hunter on the Vectrex ?! :D

    • d19xx

It doesn’t have blast processing. :)

  • riceisnice

     How much ya getting paid!?

    • Testsubject909

10 neo geo pockets a year is my guess.

  • Congratulations to the new moderators! I hope things don’t get too crazy for you, especially since you’re coming in at E3 time. ^_^

    • I’m mentally preparing for it, but I’m sure it’s gonna exceed my expectations, considering my optimism makes me underestimate things…

      • Ren

Can’t be worse than the things me and Aneki put you up against daily~

        • I really did not need to be reminded of that…

          • Ren

Treat it as endurance training. Training for love~

          • M’iau M’iaut

            Break out the waterboards!

          • Testsubject909

Okay, now I know what this music video is used for and it’s not my intent to do that.

I just really find that this song is fitting for the situation, somehow, I don’t know why, it’s just the first song I thought up when you said Training for love.

Plus, aside from all the rick rolling, you gotta admit the song can be quite enjoyable.

          • PoweredByHentai

            What is love?
            Baby don’t hurt me~
            Don’t hurt me~
            No more~

            Baby don’t hurt me~
            Don’t hurt me~
            No more~

            *cue music and bobbing heads*

          • malek86

Don’t worry, we’ll remind you on twitter. Every day.

          • Testsubject909

Now I want to know… every little details…

and encourage the fangirls to write fanfics about it.

          • Ren

Touch our Aung and you are dead meat ._. That’s all you need to know.

          • rebecasunao

I’ll always remember your “Oh God, Rebeca woke up”

  • Congrats DrakosAmatras and M’iau M’iaut, please take good care of us. Everyone, please enjoy this year’s Electronics Entertainment Expo, it’s certainly an exciting one. I’m looking forward to Sony’s Vita announcements and I can’t wait to play ACIII: Liberation. A fully-fledged AC experience custom tailored to Vita is an instant d1p. A lovely female Assassin makes the game way more awesome.

I’m not expecting much from Nintendo’s WiiU unveiling, I just hope they change the name and get rid of the Wii moniker so closely associated with waggle-waggle shovel ware. 3DS convinced me Nintendô still have some of their hardcore gaming magic left in them, now they need to prove it with their next home console.

It’s gonna be a tough sell above 250 bucks, especially with the 3DS’ sudden price cut still lingering in people’s memories. Nintendô have lots to prove this E3, I hope they deliver as I really want to love their new console and have actual games I can enjoy whose number can’t be counted on one hand (as was the case with satisfying Wii core games).

  • finalheart9323

“What you say and post on the site has an impact. Comments that generate discussion are highly encouraged. On that note, flaming is in no way constructive, and should be avoided”
I just hope this will make people actually comment on the game info you post. I’m all for a open mind but when every time i go into the articles all i see is “loli this boobs that” I just want people to actually talk about the game and not how a character is cute or hot all the time. I’m gulity too but still…..

Anyway can’t wait for E3 news

  • Brandon001

thanks for writing this for me ishaan, will do!!

  • siliconera PSA : )

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

One of the nicer things about Siliconera is that we have a fairly decent community in comparison to a lot of other websites on the Internet”
Never really noticed that until just now. True dat.

    • “Never really noticed that until just now.”

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

lol think of it as a dormant feeling that you don’t notice until someone points it out. :3

    • Testsubject909

I’ve been to a lot of Gamefaqs threads that have an incredible ton of regulars and intelligent people who’re well polite and helpful…

What? Why’re you all looking at me like that? I’m freaking serious. Hell, one of those places tends to be the Warriors series gamefaqs threads (Warriors Orochi, Dynasty Warriors Next). It’s probably because they’re all deeply involved in a more niche game. I also remember the Persona 3 gamefaqs threads when the game first came out to be quite pleasant with a lot of people with whom you could converse about psychology, sociology and theology without being crass.

      • Jirin

Check out the RPGs – Everything Else board.

It was originally designed to talk about ‘RPGs not by Square Enix’ but now people talk about Square Enix games too.  So it’s turned into a board where people can talk about popular and niche RPGs side by side.

      • boundries_san

Well now if u try to go to Persona 4 board…… Disaster.T_T

  • I like you guys, mature and professinal, the only two sites i use to keep my games feed alive is andriasang and siliconera. Kudoes gentlemen, and everyone have a happy E3? Now, who you guys think will win???

    • ThatBlackGuy

I say sony I feel they have been a doing a pretty good job this year.

  • Luna Kazemaru

    >M’iau M’iaut
Oh boy the end has come for me D:…..LOL nah Just Kidding congratz guys. Here is hoping to a good E3.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Hey, last time you caught Drakos on a good day :P. Glad to see your posts, and  hope we can continue to have folks around with the passion for the site that you have.

      (Extends hand for a shake.)

      • Luna Kazemaru

         *shakes hands*

        Sure why not. :P

        • rebecasunao

Luna is a tsundere, so cute

          • Luna Kazemaru

            da heck?

          • rebecasunao

            *runs away*

          • Luna Kazemaru

I’ll leave a frag grenade in your lunch box rebeca.

        • boundries_san

Nahh not Tsundere just a bit…. baka and hentai??? ^^

      •  Oh, hey! Congrats! Mod ’em up, my fellow ancient (not age, but wisdom!) Siliconera-ite!

        • M’iau M’iaut

Might be both there, Nick. Nice to know you still keep watch!

    • No need to worry about that. While I stand by the fact that being too sarcastic can be counterproductive, I don’t think you’re a disruptive user by any means, as far as I know.

  • Awesome, glad to hear this. I am sure it will only help make Siliconera a better site for discussion.

    Congrats to DrakosAmatras and M’iau M’iaut! :)

  • ‘grats to the new mods.  May you reign with carnage and terror.

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

Congratulations to the new mods. Although there are many sites in my language, I still prefer siliconera so it’s great to see how much you care about it. Thanks to all staff!

  • haqua

“why isn’t this for NeoGeo Pocket”
    Hehe ~

Well, congratulations to the new mods! I noticed that M’iau M’iaut had a star by their name yesterday and I was wondering just how long it had been there…
Anyway, I’ve got everything recorded on my cable and I’m going to keep watch on Siliconera, too!!  I want to see what Nintendo has planned for the Wii U most of all, just because I’ve been waiting since last E3. Hmph.

  • kylehyde

    Congratulation to DrakosAmatras and
    M’iau M’iaut.

I really hope that this E3 could give us a lot of unexpected (and positive) surprises.

  • Roberto Armando Iraheta

Sounds good. Only making an already great community better.

  • Magnifico~ Hello to the new mods!

This is going to be my first E3 experience with this community and I’m really happy about that. I’ve been having to spend the last few on my own talking to myself about it on Twitter…ahaha :(

  • Congrats to the two newest moderators! Siliconera’s a great community and I look forward to following E3 with y’all!

  • Ladius

I’m happy to see Miaut and Drakos modded, they’re both good, reasonable persons :) Also looking forward to system wars-free E3 discussions :P

  • Hai, hai! Looking forward to E3 and all the excitement that goes along with this time of year!

  • Mister_Nep

Does this mean dirty jokes aren’t allowed?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Means the same thing that the rules have always meant; if you are coming to be mean and vulgar, that can be taken anywhere but here. On the other hand, if someone infers something from a well written and thought out comment, that’s beyond the scope of our modding responsibilities.

      • Mister_Nep

I’ve always tried to be lighthearted, and try to keep it that way when I post a comment. Sometimes I joke to get people to laugh. Which tends to lead to pervy-natured jokes. What would be the course of action for a comment like that?

        • M’iau M’iaut

Within the boundaries I think you understand, all that will earn is a smile. DrakosAmatras can’t go around modding himself, can he?

          • Oi! I’m the butt of you guys’ jokes on Twitter, okay? Not like I make dirty jokes that often either…

          • Testsubject909

I make dirty jokes very, very often. Sort of ingrained in me…

edit: In fact I’m tempted to make one right now… Must… Control… Bad pervy humor…

          • @Testsubject909:disqus
Please do. And while we’re at the topic of restraint: Do not put AV screenshots in the Open Thread again. ಠ_ಠ

          • boundries_san

            Ummm… Hentai pics?

          • @theworldofnoboundries:disqus
            Same deal.

  • Well if Sony´s new PS 4 or what ever bad name they come up with will have Download games only  as rumors said im no sure E3 will be magical >.<  Well if they even plan a new console this year that is.

And nice to see DrakosAmatras and M’iau M’iaut joning the ranks of Mods gratz you 2 ^.^

    • Testsubject909

First of all, I thought that rumor was for the next Microsoft home console, never really heard of anything like that for the next Sony home console, though it’d make sense.

As for any news on those consoles, even if they did so, we’d probably only see their release within the next 2 to 4 years as they seem to have no intention of moving forward just yet what with new peripherals that they continuously touted as extended the lifespan of their console, although they’re not making too good a use of them to date, which is a shame since they do have good promise.

Anyhow, still curious how it’ll go… And worried how this would possibly impact development costs, which in turn would cause us the consumers some problems as well.

  • Hours

    Congratulations to the new mods.

I hope this E³ is enjoyable and beneficial for the niche gaming community.

  • Palmer Nyako

rofl, hopefully these aren’t the same shitty mods that flag everything when you post an opinion.
also, i don’t know why this site is censored for preteens, but OK.
Grats to the new mods though.

    • EusisLandale

I’ve never seen either of them be unreasonable. And while rare examples of flagging for just an opinion seem to happen, for the most part they’re flagged for rule violations. Typically either 2 or 4, flaming the crap out of people with your opinion, no reasoning when posting criticism which typically leads back to flaming, or repeating the same complaints over and over again in threads about the same thing.

    • You might be mistaking the flags with bans. Flags are made by users; bans are made by mods. (I mean, theoretically, why bother with a flag when you’re pretty much in control?) And I believe Ishaan has reminded people about the flaggings already because there were some users who abused those a while back.

I can’t speak for the other mods, but personally, I can assure that I very much prefer face-to-face talks over vetoing, even though it takes more time. That’s how I’ve been doing things before, and I don’t see a necessity to be any different now, even as a mod.

I’m not clear on what you mean by “censored for preteens” part, but if you’re referring to how we avoid vulgar talk, well, I would think it’s because the site requests a certain level of class/manners. But don’t feel too restricted about that; as long as people follow decency, I don’t think there’d be much problems.

  • EusisLandale

I know I’ve mentioned this once before some time ago, but since you guys are reposting the rules I’ll ask again; Is it at all possible to have the site’s rules more easily located? Unless I’m seriously missing something, in which case one of my addons is hiding the rules and only the rules, there’s nothing about them anywhere easily accessed. Terms of Use? Not there. About Siliconera? Not there.
I actually went out of my way to find the old one and bookmark it so I could at least redirect new people who start off on the wrong foot to it, but it’d be nice to have the rules more visible so nobody really needs to do something like that.

    Also, yay for new mods.

    • M’iau M’iaut

On the list to find a way. Right now the focus is on prepping for this weeks coverage. That’s one of the reasons Drak and I are up this weekend, so Spencer and Ishaan have extra eyes on the forums.

      • I would think something important like that could be linked up on the navigation bar up there, probably somewhere near the right edge. But, I’m not the system engineer here.

  • sibarraz

One day I will assure to see crysis III work on a Neo Geo Pocket

Anyway, this blog is very relaxed, so glad to see more guys working to help with the peace of the site, in E3 days everybody seems to become a bigger troll from what they are

    • LynxAmali

I’m throwing money at the screen and yet nothing’s happening!

      WHY, DANGIT, WHY?!

  • Congratulations to the both of you. I can imagine how much easier it’ll be for you guys over E3 now =) Oh and thanks for a great site ^^

  • Sevyne

It’s was actually really nice reading this. I can’t even begin to list the gaming sites where the community and even the staff are just horrible. Over the last year this has been becoming my most frequently visited gaming source. Always something I’m interested in and mostly a really good crowd of people here. If any of that is due to good moderation than all I can really say is, “Thank you”.

Anywho enough sappy stuff; grats to the new mods! May your new frustrations not become my own!

  • SirRichard

Congrats Drakos and M’iau, you’ll make fine mods, I’m sure!

    • Testsubject909

      *starts building shelters*

Hmm? oh don’t mind me, I’m just doing this in case…

      • M’iau M’iaut

Oh but the all mighty banhammer is like one of these new gen missiles that not only can pick which window, but which fly on the wall as well.

        • Testsubject909

*starts planning underground escape route instead*

  • All the rules in this post are great and I think very necessary for this time of the year, there’s only one of them that I have to disagree on.

“Don’t repeat your argument every time a certain topic or game comes up
either. If you articulated your point well the first time, you won’t
    have to!”

First, news articles are going to fly by FAST throughout E3, meaning that someone’s comment made in a news article will end up getting lost quickly. Second, it’s highly likely that we’ll end up with multiple news articles covering the exact same topic. An article summarizing an entire conference, an article that’s a stub before we get more details, an article that fully fleshes out the details, that alone means we may end up with three separate articles that cover the same subject. How is a person to decide on which article to post their comments on? That’s disregarding the issue that the one they might have wanted to post their comments on may not even be posted until a little later; say, I may post a criticism of a game in a Nintendo conference post, only to find an article specifically about that game posted an hour later.

The third potential problem is that “if you articulated your point well then you won’t have to repeat it” assumes that everyone is going to be reading all the comments in every article every time. There will be a sea of comments, and a person may read a thread about a Capcom or Squeenix game but not a thread about the Sony conference where it was announced, or similar situation.

Other than that, again, all the other aspects of the rules seem very fitting to me. :)

    • I don’t suppose it’ll be a problem if the user explains their thoughts well, which is encouraged here. From what I understand, the primary purpose of that rule is to discourage repeated complaints, which I’m sure any regular user should be acquainted with by now.

As for users who properly explain themselves, they could link back to their (recent) old posts if they don’t want to repeat themselves; that way, they can avoid repetition and still get the point across.

      • The need for users to explain their thoughts well is definitely something I’m on board with, I don’t think it really serves anyone to just say “lol dis sux” and it’s left at that.

But I think repeated complaints shouldn’t be discriminated against for being complaints that show up in several relevant articles. I understand there’s a fine line between repeating a complaint and SPAMMING a complaint, which if I understand right, the latter is the bigger concern here. I don’t really see the problem with it so long as the person isn’t going into news articles and looking for excuses to talk about something completely unrelated, say complaining endlessly about Capcom in an Atlus article.

I don’t think linking back to recent old posts will work. First because a lot of people won’t know how to create links straight to their comments (I only just found out how while writing this comment), second because most people won’t think to do that, and third because most people will just shrug and ignore random links (which is what a person linking to their old comment will look like).

        • Then we could also throw in the factors of context and relevance to the conversation. If it’s relevant and adds to the discussion, I don’t suppose anybody would object, would they?

          • Agreed. WRITE THE CONTRACT! But not with the Death Note. I’d like to continue living. :)

    • Syltique

I hope you post your usual “3rd Birthday sux” style of comment like you do over on Andriasang.  No wonder you don’t like that rule.

  • Saculogir

I, for one, welcome our new mod overlords. ^(>/./<)^

    • DON’T TEMPT ME, PEASANT. [Ahem] Please don’t ruin my reputation before I even start out…

      • Saculogir

Don’t worry, I’ll keep quiet about your Tuesday nights, master! :o

          • Saculogir

Oh! Right, right. Oh don’t mind me, I’ll just probably end up fading into the shadows again~

          • Testsubject909

So ninja maid with a team of snipers…. Interesting.

          • Testsubject909

Take advantage of this! Make him/her (I can’t tell) call you DrakosAmatras-Sama and make him/her, doesn’t really matter, wear a maid outfit… even if it’s a him.

          • Saculogir

It seems no matter what website I’m on, someone wants to dress me up as a maid…
I really hope that all just one big coincidence >.<

          • Testsubject909

            *grabs measuring tapes*

Could you raise your arms? It’d be good to have it tailor made and perfectly fitting…

And call it collective subconscious desires for more maids and consider it a compliment for being chosen. Even if you’re a guy. Because I don’t know your gender… or if you’re human.

          • Code

Nyan *rolls pencil on desk* this sounds verryyy familiar ◕3◕~

          • Saculogir

Well…I guess you got to do what you go to do. I guess I have no choice but to accept my fate . *raises arm*

After all, everything’s better with maids~

          • Code

@twitter-225689859:disqus It’s alright, I understand what you’ve gone through *nods, puts hand on there shoulder* Join me, join Maids sans Frontières ◕3◕ *clenches fist*

          • Testsubject909

            I concur.

        • PoweredByHentai

Regarding the maid outfit, well, you ARE using a Chitanda image as your icon.  :P

I am, however, curious about Drakos’s Tuesday nights. It sounds like something that I can profit from. :D

          • Saculogir

Well, I suppose it is partly my fault then. But I can’t help it, she’s too adorable :3

I would gladly sell you the information if it weren’t for the team of snipers currently fixed on my position D:

          • PoweredByHentai

            I’ll deal with the snipers.

See you in an hour.  :P

          • Testsubject909

*grabs the recording equipment and hidden cameras*

edit: So where do I set this up?

      • Testsubject909

Huh… Sooo… Were you imitating Samantha Stevens there for a moment? The whole royalty + peasant thing?

But that aside, congrats on your newfound powers.

        Insert typical Spiderman speech.

      • boundries_san

        Yeahhhh new mod to tease.^^

    • Testsubject909

Are you blushing while you’re praising them?

  • Croix

Rule number 4 is more or less the big key here. I know you all have read the rules already (right?) and of course already understand why they exist (right!?), but to reiterate how awesome the rule really is, I’m going to put this spin on it:

It’s okay to disagree with someone! But you should do it in an elegant manner that makes you look cool, collected, and intelligent. There’s a difference between a logical debate with no personal harm intended, and a groundless, poorly veiled attack on another person or group.

Comments or arguments that are crude or poorly constructed only make all of us look less cool. I’m very much the kind of person to speak up when I see something I don’t like, but I try to never hold it against any one person or company. Some things in the gaming market drive me crazy to the point that they have turned into pet peeves of mine, but I still welcome feedback that isn’t in agreement with what I have to say. If I’m of the mind to dislike something, and someone is able to make a well-constructed argument (of the debate kind, not a fight) why it’s actually good and make me find a new appreciation for what I once dismissed, well, that’s a positive gain for everyone. I don’t post comments on this site in order to ‘be right’ (though I do make an effort not to be wrong), but rather, I post in order to see what others have to say, and I respect the opinions of even those who I remain in disagreement with.

  • joe ling

16 more hours to go!! Is your body ready?

    • Testsubject909

My mind, body, heart and soul is ready.

      My wallet… is not.

      • boundries_san

I can’t imagine the day my wallet is ready.T_T

        • Testsubject909

          That’s… depressing.

          • boundries_san

Being a gamer who loves all kind of game is suffering.T_T

          • Testsubject909

            Tell me about it…

Though I think the genre I play the least are group sports games.

  • rebecasunao

Drakos tsundere-chan and Miau oyaji moe? I approve.

    • Testsubject909

I still remember that I’m supposedly the Kuudere or something…

      • rebecasunao

  • Congrats on our new Mods. ^__^

  • *Salutes* Sir, yessirs.

  • thundergodCN

I’m just happy I haven’t seen anyone type “first” on an article

  • Go2hell66

Yeeesh so many rules, posting in the comments is like a full time job now…

    • Jirin

I know, we have to put the same effort into being respectful on the internet that we do into being respectful in real life.  What is the world coming to?

    • MrRobbyM

Ugh! Being respectful is so hard!

  • Jirin

I still say there’s a difference between saying “Why isn’t every single game I want for a console I have?” and saying “Why did this series that has always been on this console and has all its fans on this console suddenly switch to this other console?”

Suppose you loved Dragon Legend Killer 1.  Then you loved Dragon Legend Killer 2, and Dragon Legend Killer 3.  You’ve been waiting for Dragon Legend Killer 4 for years, you think it’s going to be the greatest game of all time.  You can only afford one next gen console:  You pick the one by the same company that DLK1-3 came out, specifically for the ability to play future DLK games.

The company then announces:  Dragon Legend Killer 4 is not for that console, it’s for the other console, which you can’t afford, and does not usually focus on the sort of game you like, so you’d only be buying it for that one game.

Wouldn’t you be just a little annoyed?

    • ddh819

wait did you just say Yakuza 5 is an xbox360 exclusive?

      • Jirin

Actually I was trying not to be too transparently talking about Tales.  ;)

  • Yes Sir!

  • The whole thing of trolling is like one mass hysteria over the internet.
Now it’s like you can’t digress with anything because in doing so you are trolling, meh.

  • Pang Chee Jie

It seems that everything is fine and dandy until a DmC article pops up.

    • rebecasunao

Include Tales Of series and Neptunia on that list

      • boundries_san

U should add Shin Megami Tensei for that list too.^^

        • mirumu

Don’t forget anything about Capcom in general, Square Enix or Idea Factory. Bound to be more too.

          • boundries_san

…… shouldn’t we mention all game here lol.^^(Don’t forget Castlevania too.)

          • M’iau M’iaut

Given today (Monday), Capcom clearly is at the top of the list of things to watch. Nep nep we shall see, I am hoping that drama is past us.

          • mirumu

I must say I’d expected worse. The debates seemed fairly calm and considered on the whole.

  • boundries_san

Hope that with this rules, Trolls and flaming can be decreased.^^ And also hopes for the best for the two new mods.^^

  • For every part of this news…WOOHOO!!!
I really didn’t put much thought into this post did I…

  • Kai2591

Okay fine, I won’t touch the dog.

  • Niermyico

Siliconera is (in my experience) the gaming news site that I know of that has less trolls and fanboys. I’m glad I know about this place.

Now, into important matters… can I touch the monkey instead?

  • komiko12

It’s good if this article is always accessible on the site. This would be a good read for new community members.

And congratulations on the new mods :D

  • s07195

    Can’t wait for E3!

And congrats to the new mods, though I don’t really know them.

  • Jirin

I might add something to suggested rules:

If you disagree with somebody, attack their argument, do not attack them personally, and absolutely do not imply that they disagree with you because of some hidden ulterior motives.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Would be covered by both 2 and 4 by my measure, and quite probably the quickest way to meet M’iau’s BANHAMMER.
