Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate Screenshots Look Great

By Ishaan . June 5, 2012 . 11:31am

Set 25 years after the events of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate will tell the story of Gabriel’s descendants. As previously reported, the game will focus on exploration and a time-travel aspect that lets you play as four different characters, including Trevor and Simon Belmont.

For all of you Castlevania fans who like to keep track of the story, here’s MercurySteam’s description:

Trevor Belmont, a knight of the Brotherhood of Light sets out to avenge the death of his mother, at the hands of his own father, who has now returned from years of exile to take up residence in a mysterious castle. What was once Gabriel Belmont now stands a powerful vampire called Dracula. Dracula has declared war upon the Brotherhood and thus the scene is set for a cataclysmic showdown between Father and Son!

We’ll probably find out more about Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate at Nintendo’s separate Nintendo 3DS software showcase tomorrow. Until then, here are the first screens for the game:

  • This is very interesting news. So, Gabriel had a son before the events of LoS. That’s actually easy to picture, but at the same time leaves a lot of room open to develop a very engaging story. I cannot wait to see more of this game.

  • SirRichard

So he did have a child before Lords of Shadow. That’s an interesting twist on it; the progenitor of the Belmont clan became Dracula, the ultimate monster of night they are sworn to destroy. As their corrupted founder, it really is their problem to deal with.

Nice parallel with the original Lords of Shadow and the Brotherhood of Light, too. Really liking the (very, very brief) look we got of it today, it seems they’re mixing LoS’ combat with the 2D platforming of old.

Alluding to the Lords of Shadow 2 trailer with the ending showing a white haired knight who some think is Alucard, maybe his existence is explained in mirror of fate. Perhaps a Belmont figure turned by Gabrielle who turns against his fate and fights against Dracula

I think Alucard will be in it somewhere, whether that’s him or not (at least I hope!), but I think he would be Dracula’s son, not a Belmont turned.  After all in the original timeline sometime after Mathias turned into Dracula he married another woman, Lisa, and had Alucard.  So, I’m pretty positive Alucard would be a dhampir in this timeline too.

      • andref

Well I kind of thought that way because the timeline is different so it could change how the characters come about

        • Guest

That is true.  Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  • ZBaksh386

    pretty interesting.

This sounds awesome!  I can’t wait to learn more, let alone play it! (^-^)/

Since Trevor and Simon are confirmed, and Gabriel is like Leon (and Mathias combined), I think the other two playable characters will be Juste and Richter.  They are the 5 greatest Belmonts before Julius’ time afterall.

  • Chow

It may not be Richter, but those screenshots certainly make it look like him!

    “Die monster!”

  • The_Real_Oyashiro

I can’t wait to see more of this!

  • Code

Mmm I’ll keep an open mind, and I do have to see more. But man do these screens make me wish for Iga, chuu T3T~

    looks like CV X Chronicles.

  • Tom_Phoenix

Well, it’s a relief to see that it will actually be a 2D platformer. And, admittingly, the game does look preety good. It’s annoying when certain developers feel the need to get “cutesy” with the visuals when they make a 2D platformer, so it’s nice to see them preserving a darker art style.

Having said that, after watching the brief demonstration of gameplay that Nintendo showed in its 3DS trailer at E3, I have to ask….why the hell does this game have QTEs? This isn’t a 3D game; we don’t need QTEs to fight giant monsters. We fought giant monsters in previous Castlevania games just fine without them. QTEs have no business being in a 2D platformer.

    •  “darker artstyle”? It looks about as bland as LOS.

      • Tom_Phoenix

Bland or not, at least the art style is consistent and fits with the themes of the game. I’d rather have that than have the developers forcefully try to make a game with horrific elements “cute”.

Having said that, I do agree that ti could have been a lot better.

  • I hope won’t get lost, I don’t have a PS3 for Lords of Shadow yet in the event I play this first.

    • Sperium3000

Not really, go to the Castlevania wiki and read the plot of Lords of Shadow is you don’t plan on playing the game, it’s a five minute read at best.

  • The ps3/360 looked like GoW imitation, I really hope this will feal more llike the old 2d scrollers, although the screens do say otherwise.

  • Prinnydoom

Shaping up pretty good i liked Lords of shadow when i played it so this is welcome news.

  • Sperium3000

Wait, wait, so Trevor is Gabriel’s son? When did that happen? Lords of Shadow never mentioned Gabriel and Marie having a son! Talk about quick retcon!

    •  It was probably someone he bedded after he became Dracula, then again details are still scant right now.

      • Solomon_Kano

It said his mother is Marie in the trailer, didn’t it? I’d imagine that they’ll explain it, but that’s a sizable hole right now.

        •  I wasn’t sure if they were referring her to or not as Trevor’s mother for LoS. But if you do remember from the original timeline Trevor was supposedly the strongest of the Belmont clan and the first to defeat him, which might have been a result from his mother who may or may not have been in a relationship with Alucard.

            Sorry to intrude, but:

First off: The game where Sonia Belmont was in, Castlevania Legends, was retconned.  And one reason was for that supposed Alucard/Sonia pairing.

Second: It was stated Richter was the most powerful Belmont as each generation gets more powerful than the last.  Well, that was before Julius, so he’s probably the most powerful now.

          •  That’s why I worded my comment as such due to the retcon and the fact that most Castlevania games after the ones with Trevor in it usually feature him as a zombie clone or allude to him for being the strongest, with Richter popping up as reference since the main branch of the Belmonts were told to keep their hands off the Vampire Killer for 100 years as part of a prophecy so they could have the power to finally seal Dracula away once and for all.

          • Solomon_Kano

Hm… it should be interesting to see how LOS goes about that.

  • DuskSharkEX

Color me interested. I hope there’s a demo coming.

  • Solomon_Kano

Oh wow. This looks better than it did in the actual trailer. For someone reason it looked kinda… grainy. Glad to see MercurySteam is taking advantage of the 3DS’ capabilities. I’m wanting this more and more.

  • Happy Gamer

I wonder if the game will be bit more old school CV with item collection and progression system. Even Lords of shadow had it and pretty much all games these days that are action have some sort of RPG lite system (even GoW) so I expect it to come with that. I have had a rule for Nintendo handhelds since gameboy and it was that I will buy it once it has a CV game released. This is the first real different CV game in terms of style released for the N’s handheld in well i dunno…almost 25 years. Let us see how it is soon!
