XCOM: Enemy Unknown Has Sid Meier As A Recruitable Character

While 2KMarin work on their XCOM shooter, Civilization developer, Firaxis Games, are working on XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a strategy game that uses a blend of turn-based and real-time design.

If you’re familiar with Firaxis and Civilization, you’ve probably also heard of designer, Sid Meier, who is the company’s co-founder, and has had his name in the title of most of its games, starting with Sid Meier’s Gettysburg! in 1997.

While Meier’s name won’t be attached to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Meier himself will be in the game. At a demonstration at E3 today, we saw Meier available as a recruitable character. In the E3 demo I watched, he controlled an alien with his mind before making the alien kill itself with a grenade.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be released on October 9th in North America and October 12th internationally, for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. You can watch the game’s E3 trailer below:

Everything I see about this makes me happy because I think it really might be a worthy successor to the best game of all time.  Can’t wait!

That will be interesting to see in game. If they get a few more gameplay trailers going I may be interested in actually getting this for consoles.

Hopefully this will result in a new wave of strategy titles.

      That’d be nice.

I just hope it does well, particularly in comparison to its FPS counterpart. Then maybe that will show companies that we want something more than yanking an old, unknown (to most modern gamers) franchise and turning it into a shooter.

Of course, I have serious doubts that that will actually happen.

As long as they manage to perhaps keep K. Inafune out of it.

    •  “Inafune will be making a guest appearance in the game with his face superimposed on an alien mothership.”

To be honest I think that would be make me even more inclined to purchase this game.

  • I had no idea there was two XCOM games being worked on, I only knew about the 2K Marin one a couple of years ago when someone some of the guys on 1up.com or Bitmob (can’t remember which though I think it was Bitmob) were doing a episodic play by play on the game, it got me really interested because everything was pretty much on edge as you completed missions fast enough to get to locations around the world in a set amount of days before everyone became collectively screwed.

I really need a better pc so I can get this game.
