Ys Celceta: Sea Of Trees Has Touch Screen Controls

By Spencer . June 22, 2012 . 12:15am

Falcom’s reimagining of Ys IV isn’t too far away. Ys Celceta: Sea of Trees or as it’s called on the official site Ys Celceta: Foliage in Ocean is slated for release on September 27. Like Ys Seven, players control three heroes: Adol, Dulen, and Cama. You can switch characters using the Vita’s touchscreen.

Ys Celceta: Foliage in Ocean will be released in stores and as a PSN download for 7,140 yen ($89). There’s also a Ys 25th Anniversary pack for 8,925 yen ($111).

  • Hopefully that’s all the touch screen is used for, as I’ve yet to see one vita game make good use of it. I still have nightmares of the canoe paddling, lock opening and charcoal rubbing sequences in uncharted golden abyss.

    • sandra10

If you watch the first trailer Falcom put out, you’ll notice the touch screen will also be used for some puzzles.

And I think Gravity Rush used the touch screen pretty well.

    • kupomogli

I hated the charcoal rubbings.  It’s unique at first, but gets old very quickly because there’s a new one every five seconds. Also remember the one where you have to put the touch screen up to the light to dry out the paper or something. I hated that one. Regardless, Golden Abyss is still a great game, with Sony Bend doing a great a great job replicating the Uncharted gameplay style.

What Uncharted did very well when it comes to touch screen controls is when painting a path for Drake to climb.  I didn’t do it at first because I liked using conventional controls, but after I messed around with it a bit, I almost exclusively do long jumping sequences with the touch screen instead of pressing x to get where I want to go.

Also melee instant kills worked good with the touch screen.  Instead of hitting square and possibly being a slight inch off, just touch the enemy instead and you know you’ve got him.

    •  Yeah, puzzles, item use, menu screen, character swap. Sounds good to me.

  • neo_firenze

Knowing Falcom, I want that Anniversary pack.  The Ys VI collector’s pack (Japanese PC) is probably the finest LE release I own.

I was going to try to wait for a localized version, but now I don’t know if I can pass up a cool Falcom LE…

  • epy

Unless they retconned her name, it should be Karna or Carna. Just saiyan.

    •  Yeah, I think you misread the name, Spencer. It’s CaRNa, not CaMa.

  • Zeonsilt

Love the graphics and improvements over Ys Seven.
Will get this game for sure.

  • Prinnydoom

What no Dogi and i thought he was synonyms in YS series. Looks pretty cool though and a definite step up from YS seven. Although i couldn’t really get into sevens combat might give this a try. Now the next step is getting a vita -___- thats the hard part.

    • Dokurochan

Dogi’s absent because he and Adol seperated at the end of Ys 3 as Dogi wanted to help with the recovery of his hometown. They do eventually reunite though.

      • Chronologically this game happens before Wanderers from Ys, though.

        • Dokurochan

I didn’t realize that. I’d just assumed that with this being Ys 4 and all that it took place after Ys 3. Thanks for letting me know otherwise.

          • No problem.  This is the one instance in the numbered series where the games are out of order so it’s kind of confusing, haha.  Especially because, well, Falcom’s never made their own Ys IV until now :P

  • DongT

wow games looks way better than the footage of it we saw way back when, gonna get it for sure. more jrpgs for the vita plz!!

  • first day buy, with or without a vita. Damn it the list of getting games for the Vita gets longer and longer every month and the first party titles haven’t even been announced yet.

Falcom, if you bring Ys and a Legend of Heroes Title to the Vita …here in the US and Europe then you will have my money and that of my friends as well. So keep them coming, we’re waiting. :D
I really like Adol and Cama’s design.

Thanks for the news, totally looking forward to it!

  • Carocaro4

Where is the love for people who don’t speak a wink of Japanese but would gladly throw upwards of 100 dollars to Import this. I really want to play more Ys games. They never get old.

    • superlocke

This. Also, nice avatar. Radiant Historia doesn’t get enough love :)

      • Carocaro4

Yeah Aht is one of my top ten characters. She is just too cute. I wish they would make like a figure or something of her.

  • Looking forward to seeing more and more of this. I really like the colours in those screenshots.

  • I’m actually very excited about this title. Very eager to see how this all works out.

  • pekikuubik

    >or as it’s called on the official site Ys Celceta: Foliage in Ocean

Foliage in Ocean?! That makes even less sense than what it actually says on the official site, Foliage Ocean in Celceta.

    • superlocke

Foliage Ocean basically just means Sea of Trees. Tomato tom-ah-to.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Has ADOL always looked like that? I mean, that is pretty hot.

  • Go2hell66

Damn those screenshots are looking pretty good
now i sit and wait for the localisation announcement as usual…

  • Really excited to see the content of the anniversary pack. I can see Falcom including download codes for all the Ys stuff on PSN and a soundtrack, but I hope it’s something stunning because I already have every Ys game and all the soundtracks.

  • Göran Isacson

Man, the releases of these games sure seem to be all over the place. I think the seventh game got a rerealse for Steam and PS Vita, the seventh, first and second have rereleases on PSP, now the fourth if coming for the Vita… sure feels like a lot of gaps in the schedule here! Are those without rereleases just not worth playing or what?

    • Hraesvelgr

Ys Seven is only on PC in China…

      • Göran Isacson

Ah, then I was wrong. Out of curiosity then, which of the games is it that’s out on Steam?

        • JazzyMan123

Currently, Ys Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin on Steam.

          • Göran Isacson

Ah, I should have clarified- what is their “number”? Like, Origin is apparently a prequel to the series that starts with Ys 1 with the red-head main character, but which “number” is Oath in Felghana?

          • pekikuubik

Oath in Felghana is a remake of Ys 3. But chronologically it takes place after the events of Ys 4 (this game).

          • It’s the third installment: Here I can give you a rundown, by sheer memorization:

            Ys Origins
            Ys I & II Chronicles
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (Oath in Felghana)
Ys IV: Dawn of Ys (Hudson Soft)/Mask of Sun (Tonkin House) (Celceta Sea of Trees)
Ys V: Kefin, Lost City of Sand (unreleased over here)
Ys VI would be Ark of Napishtim
and finally the most recent Ys Seven.

Edit: Thanks for the info, pekikuubik. I didnt know either that both IV’s took place before III.

  • Arghh! Stop taunting me with this game. I already want it badly, but this just makes it worse!

As soon as a localization is announced I have to rush out and preorder. The solid sounding use of touchscreen controls, the gorgeous graphics and the allure of more Ys is far too much for me to handle.

    • $36598391

I’m not too thrilled for it because it looks way too similar to Ys Seven instead of Ys I and II like the original two versions of Ys IV did

  • doubletaco

“You can switch characters using the Vita’s touchscreen.”

I really, really hope that in the final product that remains “can switch with the touchscreen” and not “must switch with the touchscreen.”

I believe in you, Falcom. Don’t let me down.

    • $36598391

I hope there’s an option to use the touch screen and buttons to switch characters

  • Touchscreen controls ? Why not, but if there isn’t the choice to do it with buttons, I hope it’s perfectly implemented. Always a bit nervous with these touch-controls things.

Also, Carma is cute. Really cute.

    • Looks good, even though I’m going to miss Carna’s old look.

      Still a day 1 for me ;D

  • Thank goodness it was a huge hassle pressing square in Ys Seven when i wanted to switch characters I’m glad touch screens were invented to rectify this

    • xXDGFXx

      is sarcasm?

    • circle

      • Haha, I actually imported the game back when it first came out since that was long before the deal with XSEED, so by the time it came out in the US I was so used to those controls that I switched back to the Japanese control setup immediately.  It was [] to switch, X to dash and O to attack

  • superlocke

If that screenshot is to be believed, it seems like the buttons are mapped out right there.

So I think we can take this as confirmation that square is the member switch button, and touchscreen is optional.

    • superlocke

  • chalkcl

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the screenshots are giving me a better impression than the trailer we saw last year. Really damn tempting, and Karna really looks cute. I wonder if we’re getting Lilia, I miss her

  • Sergio Macellaro

Man this game along with Persona 4 plus Tales of Innocence (if Namco permits we play it) are enough motives to buy a PSV (Uncharted and MGS are too, memorable system sellers games).
    And 3DS?
