Top-seller: Pokémon Black/White 2 – 122,242

PlayStation Vita sales: 13,427 | Total sales: 831,924

<< Last week’s software sales chart

Pokémon Black/White 2 still refuse to budge from the top spot on the weekly software sales chart in Japan. This means that last week’s best-selling new game, Taiko Drum Master for the 3DS, had to settle for the #2 spot. Taiko sold 65,462 copies in its first week.

At #3 was another new release—Pocket Soccer League: Calcio Bit from Nintendo, which sold 26,449 copies. While that number seems low, it probably isn’t. Here’s what Calcio Bit looks like.

Finally, Level 5’s sci-fi adventure, Time Travelers, was released last week as well, on the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. The Vita version slightly outsold its 3DS counterpart (by about 300 copies), probably owing to less competition on the Vita. The more interesting question is: Is this why the PSP version was delayed?

The top-20 software sales chart for the week is as follows:

I feel this is just Time Travlers on Vita having less competition because the top 5 games all can be played on 3DS.

  • SirRichard

Eesh, Time Travellers isn’t off to the best of starts on either platform, is it? It’s 18k split across both, sure, and it has a lot of competition on the 3DS and not much of an audience on the Vita, but those still seem quite low.

I guess the PSP will give it the boost it needs next week?

  • xavier axol

wow i was hoping for time travelers to be on the second spot. on the positive note: there’s a vita game that not only is on the top 20, but it also outsold the 3ds version. still the 3ds is murdering everyone, a killer line up indeed!.

p.s. oops! i forgot resistance, but to be fair the game wasn’t that great. sony should had gave bens studio to make the game, wrong choice indeed.

    • Solomon_Kano

Eh, Bend was busy giving us a portable Uncharted. I think the right series won out in that case lol.

  • raitouniverse

I sad part is, Hino thought Time Travelers was going to be “a 500,000 or million level title”

    • Niermyico

Although, its good expectations for their own game, but that is just crazy.

    • Did he say that? I doubt Hino actually meant that. That’s crazy, haha. Not even 5pb’s games sell that much, and they’re currently the most prominent producers of visual novel/adventure games on consoles in Japan.

      • malek86

Even so, it would be nice to see Level 5 get a new hit for once.

        • The Little Battlers W will probably do well. Beyond that, I think we’re going to have to wait until Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney. That’s the only other surefire hit I see from L5 in the future. But I suspect LBW will do better than Layton X AA.

          • Guest

What ever happened to that ghost rpg Ushiro or whatever…

          • I suspect that might have transformed into Youkai Watch.

      • Anime10121

Yep he actually did, took quite a bit of searching to find a reference to the quote, but here’s an article that has it, read the second to the last paragraph.

  • Great.  Next up:  North American release date!

    *sees sales numbers*

    …oh. :

  • malek86

That doesn’t look like a great number by Time Travelers, but we don’t know their expectations. It would be good to see what kind of sell-through they achieved. I wonder how much the PSP version will sell too.

And hey, that soccer game reminds me of the C64 Soccer game, which means it’s automatically awesome. Can I get near the goalkeeper and have him dive for no reason at all?

    • raitouniverse

as I mentioned before, expectations from Hino were at least 500k-1mil. Yeah… Whether they were the same as the company, who knows.

      • malek86

I think he was joking about that. However, sell-through should give us an idea of how much they hoped to sell. If it’s less than 60%, that won’t be good.

Credit goes to andriasang.  He didn’t sound like he joking about that 500k expectation.

    • mirumu

International Soccer? I assume that’s the one you mean as the goalkeeper would dive for no reason. Good times.

I’d kind of hoped Time Travelers would sell better. Very hard to imagine a localization happening with those numbers.

  • Suicunesol

Monster Hunter 3G isn’t there. Is there some kind of mistake?

    • Nope, no mistake! The Marios, Tri G, Fire Emblem, Harvest Moon and Kid Icarus are all out of the top 20. The Mario games and Tri G will probably make a return alongside the 3DS XL’s release.

      • Anime10121

Edit: Whoops replied to the wrong comment

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

If seems Nintendo Five Swords has been falling behind there…….Well, they still had one Bazooka holding the chart throne called Pokemon there lol.^^

        • I suspect we’ll see a lot of them coming back later this year during the holiday season. Mario Kart/Monster Hunter will almost certainly get a boost from the 3DS XL being released, too. 3D Land will probably get ignored in favour of NSMB2, though.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Does 3D Mario really sells that bad there compared to 2D Mario here? I always think that both of them had their own appeal here.

          • 3D Mario doesn’t sell anywhere near as well as 2D Mario, yeah. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 barely hit a million in Japan. Super Mario 3D Land is the best-selling 3D Mario game in Japan to date, and that’s entirely because they made an effort to blur the line between the 2D and 3D design.

  • Perhaps Time Travelers is just a late bloomer and will rise in sales as time goes by.

    (Hopes for localization announcement) :3

  • Testsubject909

A side note, I just came back from EBgames to do some pre-orders, don’t worry, the people working there are actually competent friendly folks, lucky me huh?

Anyways. I just saw that the PSVita, along with one game (of which you can choose Gravity Rush) and a starter kit (4GB Memory card, pouch, carrying case, microfiber cloth, protective screen and headphones) are being sold for 250$.

Just saying, if anyone was interested in getting a Vita and was waiting… Well… I think this is a pretty good time to get one.

    • I’m picking up my Vita tomorrow! I can’t ignore a great deal like that, even if my local EB ain’t the most comfortable place to be at.

  • z_merquise

Nice to see Atelier Ayesha doing well. I think 81k for a game developed by a very small team (Gust) is a good thing, right?

Max Anarchy though . . . sigh. I guess many Japanese gamers don’t like beat-em-ups with (mostly) big burly men in it. I wonder how Metal Gear Rising would fare when it’s released in Japan.

    • Solomon_Kano

Well, cyborg ninja or no, Raiden’s still a pretty boy, so I’m confident in that game’s chances lol. Plus, it’s actually a new Metal Gear game.

  • Japan, why you hate Level-5 games so? C’mon, I wasn’t expecting Time Travellers to be a huuuuuuuuge hit, but that’s below underwhelming :/

    • Yerld_CK

It’s the case of a successful company thinking that their brand can sell what their fanbase wouldn’t normally buy (pushing a VN/ADV game onto people who’ve probably never purchased one before).

Brand power is important, but it needs to complemented with content that the fans are interested in. Japanese adventure games are super niche, so it’s difficult for any company to produce a hit.

      • This is basically what it comes down to. If they wanted this game to sell so badly, it should have been a different genre. Unlike 5pb, it doesn’t seem like Level 5 are in the adventure games biz for the long haul either, so I doubt they’re slowly attempting to build up a visual novel brand the way 5pb did with their sci-fi series.

      •  Perfectly understand that (and Ishaan, even though I can’t double quote, this also goes to what you said). Admitting that is indeed the case, then why did Ni no Kuni and other  Level-5 projects in japan seem to always fall short of expectations? Aside from the Inazuma Eleven series, or the projects they worked on with other companies (like Dragon Quest VIII/IX, which sold well for obvious reasons).

It just seems that for some reason, and more so as of late, they just can’t hit the right keys and reach out to the japanese gamers hearts.

      • Guest

Yet at least 2 VN’s come out in Japan each month like clockwork. Someone is buying them

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, lets wait for next week there.^^ Who knows many gamers waited for PSP release?^^

  • Obviously the majority of Vita owners opted for the digital Time Travelers. =P

    • That is probably true actually.

      • Highly doubtful.

        • Well I am sure there was at least a few more sales in digital though after I thought about it it probably wouldn’t be many.

    • Guest

Japanese gamers if given the choice, will almost always choose physical over digital

      • If I’m given the choice I will always choose physical. I hate digital.

        • JazzyMan123

Rather curious here…I thought you didn’t mind digital or something?

          • Uhm I dunno where I said that? I mean I will definitely do download if I have to. And it’s not the end of the world. My main concern is my internet speeds suck and I am pretty impatient sometimes. If i had a faster internet speed… I might be more inclined to make digital purchases, but as it stands… nah. I mean I also like actually having something physical to touch and hold. I mean I’ve grown up (with pretty much everybody here) with carts and discs. lol It’s always hard to change. Though I do welcome change unlike some. Oh well.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Not really sure there. As i still believe there, japanese gamer still probably had the same old mindset where physical product is always better considering, we see many of them really collect and take care of their games there.

  • Somewhere out there is a timeline, a timeline where the Vita has millions of units sold and Time Travelers is currently topping the charts. Someone must of mistimed the QTEs. Damn, you! *fist shaking*

Glad to see Ayesha and Culdcept still on that list. I’m surprised the latter is still there. I don’t even have anything to say about Pokémon, the sales are doing all the talking for me.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I would love a timeline where Sega is ruling the game industry there lol.^^

      • If they would advertise their games on that timeline then I’ll be all for it. :D

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I am sure they do there lol.^^ Considering that is their only mistake that lead to them losing the console race.^^

      • LynxAmali

I’d love a timeline where the Dreamcast succeeded.

        But alas….

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Time to prepare a hefty of money to revive Dreamcast.^^

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m interested to see how much Time Travelers does on PSP next week. Will this be a case of the more saturated system winning out or are Japanese players just not that interested in the game? Should be interesting to see.

In other news, whoo! LBX is still up there!

  • Guest

    Japan doesn’t like games anymore.

I wonder what they do in the meantime then…

    Karaoke bars?

    • Luna Kazemaru

I don’t know where you keep coming up with baseless comments like that.

      • Guest

baseless? Look at these sales…then look at the population count…

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

You forget the weeks when Pokemon laucnh there?

          • Guest

There could be a nuclear war and Pokemon would still sell. No a good example.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Nope that is still example here as lol as what you meantion here is Japan does not love game anymore and Pokemon “Game” prove it wrong there.

        • Luna Kazemaru

Because Everyone in Japan buys games at the same time…That logic…lol that logic man. I feel sorry for the idiot who liked your comment in agreement.

          • Guest

I’m talking about overall sales in relation to the population

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

What are smoking here? You know, almost all jrpg still sells well over there compared to here isn’t it?

  • Rogerrmark

I think this game will do better here.

I mean, come on,there are a lot of 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors fans (a game that sold better in U.S than Japan) around here that are looking forward to Zero’s Escape, and other visual novel-like games…plus,if it’s not RPG (read Dragon Quest,Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy)or a franchise with lot’s of fanboys(read Mario,Metal Gear, Zelda or those already mentioned) it would, most likely, sell low in Japan…

    • The circumstances in the case of 999 were rather different as far as the U.S. was concerned. 999 had a lot of things going for it.

For starters, it was released for the DS, which was the best-selling console for the generation by far and owned by an absolutely massive number of people. For another, the Ace Attorney series, Layton, and other adventure games on DS before 999 helped create a market for that genre. In contrast, the 3DS has no such game yet.

Finally, Aksys are associated with visual novels and niche games, which means a lot of people that bought 999 from them knew exactly what they were going to get. Level 5 don’t have any such reputation or image in North America yet.

As far as the game itself was concerned, 999 had the Ever17 association, which is why word of mouth got around in the first place. Again, Time Travelers lacks any such reliable brand to fall back on. Not many people have heard of Jiro Ishii, so they certainly can’t use that.

      • Guest

All that can be fixed with proper marketing plus many of those DS players are now 3DS players

  • Rogerrmark

Plus, most of Level-5 games sell good or great around here. PS3 Nino kuni’s version will probably sell better than it sold in Japan(that sold kinda bad)…..

  • I guess Travelers appealed more to an older crowd of gamers? I dunno, but a Vita game outselling it’s 3DS counterpart is practically a miracle, at this stage in the system’s lifespan.

  • komiko12

And Pokemon is still on top of the chart.
    End of story.

    • Pokemon just proves it is still awesome. :P I wish it came out here sooner than it does. >_<;

      • komiko12

        That Iris…
        Pokemon World Tournament…

        • What does Iris have to do with anything? O_o? PWT is a major draw sure sure.

          • komiko12

Well, she just became a champion.
            Sorry for spoilers.

          • No no no there is no spoilers. lol I already knew. I spoil pretty much everything in the new Pokemon games since Japan gets them before us and I really love Pokemon so I am like nope can’t wait for US release to learn everything. I still always have fun so it’s not big deal to me. :P Though when you say just I kind of doubt it. With the two year difference I am sure she didn’t just become champion. Like Cheren probably didn’t just become a gym leader. Or Elesa didn’t just change her outfit to look more skanky… :/ enough of that topic srsly. Female in Pokemon just… no let’s not go there. The one thing that confuses me is the two new gym leaders. Why did they suddenly appear over two years? The cities probably existed in B/W though we couldn’t travel to them for some reason… I dunno. But back to the post how does that make Iris really relevant? Is Iris like really popular? I mean sure she is pretty darn cute in her new poofy dress. But I don’t see her relevance.

          • komiko12

            It’s a personal thing. :D
My fave Unova gym leader is Iris.
I didn’t say it is true for the majority.

            And about spoilers…
I also gather as much spoilers as I can!
The spoilers rarely diminish my interest in something.
In fact, they give me something to look forward to!

  • Domii

Well I was gonna say that maybe Level 5 should bring Time travelers over to the west, but after seeing a video of the game on YouTube, they can sure as hell keep in Japan for all I care.

    • Göran Isacson

      Ouch, was it THAT bad-looking?

  • XypherCode

Well considering there are so many 3DS titles that made it to the charts, that could’ve been why there were more people who have bought the Vita version of Time Travelers rather than the 3DS one. Normally you’ll set aside some cash for the other 3DS games and/or they wanted the HD game game rather than 3D. And seeing how they performed in terms of sales the 3DS did do quite good as well and not very far off from the Vita version of the game. I’m actually impressed with these numbers because as far as I know they didn’t release any demo for the Vita. Maybe I’ll get both :D
Anyways I can’t wait to play Taiko Drum Master. Had so much fun with Taiko on the DS :)) And I see Etrian Odyssey IV is hanging on.

    • keithmaxx

I was about to comment on that, but glad to find your input… Indeed, the sales numbers between PSV and 3DS might not be against the latter, but that players more likely and simply had more choices on the Ninty platform than on Sony’s so far.

  • Out there there must be a timeline where VN is all the rage lk wht KamiNomi show…..

Oh well, *back to rewatch S;G*

  • SetzerGabbiani

Glad to see Etrian Odyssey over 100,000 copies.  Waiting for that NA announcement.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Man, seeing how Pokemon is still ruling the whole chart even after 3 weeks makes me feel that Pokemon is surely one of the strongest franchise in gaming industry there.^^

Feels bad about Calcobit there.T_T After a heavy amount of advertising which involve inviting real J League football player, Japan Youth team Trainer and 2 comedian to promote the game here and they are only able to sell around 20k plus.T_T

Taiko taking the second position there is also great there considering Taiko games is always able to provide addictive gameplay and nice music.^^

Level-5 seems to be having a bad sales streak here.T_T While LBX sales is not dropping as hard as Etrian Odyssey there, the sales for Time Travellers is depressing here.T_T Hope that the PSP sales will be better there.^^

This 3 weeks really shows me a new insight that all games company must take note lol.^^

Always remember to not release your game in the same month as Pokemon there. Pokemon games will surely gobble up all the sales there.T_T

    • lol Do people only buy one game? xD I am sure when they go to pick up Pokemon they pick up other games too.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, not all people had that much fund to spend isn’t it? Not to mention that the game is Japan is much expensive there.T_T

        • Japanese people make more money though mind you. It pretty much balances out… not really… but whatever. xD I just always though that Japanese people bought at least two games and possibly a system nearly every time they go to a game store. lol Not trying to be racist I just honestly thought.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, even though they make more money, they also spend more there for their living lol.

So i still had the feeling here the main reason why many if its game sells more here because game is their “Culture” their and everyone from young to old play game there not because they had more fund lol.

    • Etrian Odyssey’s drop is pretty normal! Most RPGs drop that way after their first week. Persona 4: Golden did, too. :)

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, i kinda predict the drop here however for the drop to be more than Toriko and LBX is just depressing here.T_T

I don’t really think comparing this to P4: Golden is fair here considering P4:Golden is a remake on a machine that sold lesser than 3DS here. Not to mention Etrian Odyssey is a new numbered title here.T_T

        • P4G is very much a numbered title, too, and had a year’s worth of Atlus’ biggest marketing campaign ever behind it, with promotions still ongoing in the form of Persona 4: Arena. If anything, P4G had the advantage in every way imaginable. :P

Dungeon crawlers are a more niche genre; that’s what it boils down to. Etrian Odyssey’s doing great for what it is. :)

        • brian yep

A remake and not an enhanced port?

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Uuups sorry there.^^ It is enhanced port however, my point still stand there lol. Consideing Etrian Odyssey 4 there is a new title.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I was never a big Pokemon fan even though I enjoyed Black…but its like Call of Duty., people just gobble it up even if the formula is the same. (which to me is sad for many reasons).

I hope that Time Travellers does well enough so that it is localized and brought here. – I will pick up for the 3DS day 1…because personally, I like to have unique experiences in video games instead of the same old.

    • revenent hell

See im not a Pokemon fan by any means but I happen to think if the formula works it shouldnt be changed. Ive played some games where certain aspects, like battle play, where changed for the worse in my opinion when in the previous instalments it was fine and I enjoyed playing the game……I just have the mentality “If its not broken DONT fix it” …..I think developers are trying now a days far to hard to change games aspects to be “new” and end up failing……
Though some games could use some changes…I have played some pokemon games but after a while its like “same story different  day” for me if you know what I mean hence why I never became a big fan… The core gameplay is fine and fun for me but the story aspects never realy evolve in to anything other than the  first game I played…..Thats the biggest reason of loss of interest to me

  • Aoshi00

Hm.. I thought Time Travelers got quite a bit of marketing, and Famitsu did give it an almost perfect score (again, dunno even if Jpn audience cares about what they say anymore).

I pre-ordered the Vita ver. since it should be the best looking ver (biggest screen too). and the PSP or 3DS ver don’t have trophies.. VNs are more fun w/ trophy/achievement as it gives you incentives to do more (like not messing up Robotics;Notes’ Robo-One input commands, or getting Steins;Gate’s character-specific phone triggers), make sure you read all the tips, etc..

Can’t wait to get my hands on Time Travelers either, but I have it pre-ordered together w/ the Macross Hybrid pack, so it won’t ship until the end of July :(…  My copy of Gravity Rush is still sitting there untouched, originally it was my most anticipating game  :(..

  • Göran Isacson

Only 27 000 sold copies of Anarchy Reigns. My tears flow freely like waterfalls…

    • Nitraion

:( yeah same Pokemon dominate game world now ?

      • Göran Isacson

Maybe, maybe they didn’t market it… whatever the reason, I hope it sells better when it’s released over here in the West.

    • XypherCode

Yeah I thought they would still sell like hotcakes over there…

      • Göran Isacson

I wonder what went wrong… was it the fact that Pokemon dropped and nobody cared for any other titles? Is online combat games just not interesting to the Japanese market? Dudes and ladies too macho for this? I just don’t know man, I just don’t know…

        • Nitraion

          Me neither : (

  • Nitraion

  • revenent hell

I realy wish someone would localise Time Travelers since it looks so awesome to me the ONLY reason I dont import more VN’s is because I dont understand them enough. One would think after all this time I would have learned more Japanese than what I currently know:(

  • Alphabet Soup

Time Travelers mainly plays as a visual novel, right?  How are those numbers for a console VN-style game?

    • It’s hard to say. The problem is that Time Travelers isn’t a strictly a visual novel. It’s more like a linear adventure game–higher production values than your average VN with a lot of animated sequences and QTEs and whatnot.

It also depends on why development took so long. Did it take long because they just spent that long polishing it up, or did it take long because they pulled people off the project, put them on more profitable games, and continued development with a smaller team? (Or was it always a small team to begin with?)

If Media Create provide shipment/sell-through numbers this week, that would give us part of the story, but only a part of it. How many copies are shipped depends in part on retailers, as they’re the ones who decide how much shelf space to allocate to each title. If they feel something isn’t going to do well, they wouldn’t accept a larger shipment in the first place.

So, with all of factors in consideration, it makes it really hard to pin down how the numbers actually are in perspective.

      • Alphabet Soup

Thanks for the explanation.  I guess we’ll just have to watch over the next couple of weeks – maybe it was just a slow starter.
