Tales Producer Wants You To Feel Like A Hero With Tales Of Xillia 2

By Spencer . July 25, 2012 . 5:37pm

imageUsually, players step into the protagonist’s shoes in a Tales of game and watch events unfold. Tales of Xillia 2 gives players choices and in a flash you have to decide which direction to take the story.

"Ludger is the lead character in Tales of Xillia 2 and he is very different from Jude [the male lead in Tales of Xillia]," said Hideo Baba, producer of the Tales series, when speaking with Siliconera. "Players would feel like Jude, but in Tales of Xillia 2 players make decisions and Ludger’s character depends on the player."

Letting players drive the story in Tales of Xillia 2 is a big change and Baba had his heart set on this because he wanted players to feel like a hero.

"In the previous title, players would emphasize with Jude’s feelings. For this game, I would like players to feel like I’m the hero – I’m the lead character," Baba explained. "The easiest way for me to make players feel this way was to implement the decision system."

  • Slight problem Baba-sama, Who here is named Ludger, has white hair, with a brother named  Will and an obese cat?

More personal problem: my own ethnicity. Damn you wheel of fate!

    • Locklear93

I’m kind of inclined to agree.  I’m all for a branching plot, but I’m NOT going to “feel like the hero” in a situation where my character and his/her background are so fully defined.  And… you know, I’m okay with that.  The strength, traditionally, of JRPGs has been in presenting me with a story I wanted to play out, not inserting me in said story.

We’ll leave out my concerns about the writer’s ability to create options I’d personally endorse, after the frustration that was Asbel…

  • French

    Great concept, I support this.

  • French

I assume, being* the hero, is not what is meant in a literal sense. I believe the actions you decide for the character makes you feel like* a hero, its kind of like “what would I do if I were in Luders shoes” so its open to anyone who picks up the game ?

  • French

I love the Tales of Series and most other JRPGs, so here is a third comment, you know, just to emphasise that love ?

  • Nitraion

    I smell multiple Ending….
    Im okay with that…

    • Astrid Huang

Multiple endings usually lead to more replayable gameplay, but I wouldn’t want Tales with multiple endings.. just not Tales style.

      • Nitraion

Hmm but if there is no multiple ending there is no point of make choice isn’t it ?

  • LightZero

Cool I can make Ludger a jaded bastard. That’s fine with me. I hope it’s implemented well because it would make Ludger and easier character to like in contrast to past Tales heroes.

    • Youareallcryingmorons

Kids like you give me diabetes.

      • LightZero

I wasn’t aware a man in his mid 20s is considered a kid these days? Good to know.

        • Youareallcryingmorons

Sorry its hard to tell, that post sounded like a kid wanting to be grimdark and cool. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Michael Connell

Well, it should be interesting to see Tales experiment with choice determining the story in a game. Just please don’t give us endings where all we do is pick colors, lol

    • I honestly don’t see the hate for the color picking ending but ehh. as long as these (hypothetical) multi-endings aren’t mostly the same with slight variations.

    • Bioware’s the best!  Right?

  • James Smith

Adding some western RPG style choices. Very interesting.
Tales aiming for a broader appeal or just something new? The execution and details will be critical.
For now I want to see how the old fans react to the idea.

  • Carocaro4

I hope this story leads to the end boss being saved though the power of friendship.

    • Darkrise

Turns out the end boss is female and she joins his- *ahem* MY harem.

      • XiaomuArisu

There you go,adding a girl one by one to your harem….
        Go for it!

    • Astrid Huang

I see what you’re talking about.
The recent Tales games seemed to have that kind of story. I wonder why?

      • More like most RPGs these days use that theme… and to be honest I don’t like it too much..

Hero: “I won’t lose to you because I have my friends with me!!”
Boss: “Blah Blah Blah I will destroy this world!”

        *5 Vs 1*

        Boss: I lost… (Well it’s 5 against 1.. so go figure lol)

^ This my friends, is the power of friendship… the power of ganging up your opponent.

        • Luna Kazemaru

Well they can always make a ending where everyone in your party dies even if you when but that would make people mad.

  • MrRobbyM

I recall someone stating that Ludger seems like a silent protagonist in the previous Tales thread.

Now it makes a lot more sense.

  • xavier axol

i just want the game to come out already!, so that i can finally shut my mouth with negative speculations (mainly cause of the loli female lead protagonist-i know that she’s 8). i want to be proven wrong, and i know deep down that it will deliver beyond expectations. so…..how much in the game will revolved around elle mei? will we get to see a little bit of ludger’s past? will he have a romance with other characters? the suspense is killing me!.

  • Leivinia

    I’m a hero; I’m just in debt.

  • Rocsas

So I guess that the decision about sacrificing the world for the sake of a girl will be one of the important decisions in the game…
It would be very interisting to see a Tales game with different “routes” in the story depending of your choices

  • Tales_of_Master

Hopefully, this will mean we’ll have multiple endings. It would be interesting to see a Tales game with multiple endings, although I don’t want all future games to have them. Unless the decision system is at least similar to the SMT series, it would be an unnecessary addition.

    • “Symphonia Dawn of The New World” had multiple endings. XD

      • Youareallcryingmorons

Two of them broke my heart

        • AuraGuyChris

One of them fooled everybody into thinking beating the boss is always a nice thing to do. DAMMIT!

          • Youareallcryingmorons

My wiimote stopped working and I got killed thank god.

      • Tales_of_Master

Oh yeah you’re right…That game was too crappy that my brain just blocked all the memories of me playing it.

        • Daniel Morandi

I agree with you but we should try to be more hopeful with this game. Maybe plotwise the decision and ending are better (it’s not that hard)

  • Niermyico

So I will destroy the world, so that way, my dept will be the least of their problems. :D

  • Solomon_Kano

But emphasis with feelings is always the way to go! :(

  • Freud_Hater

Troublesome, I can’t read Japanese… Oh well, guess I’ll have to wait and see XD

  • AuraGuyChris

“In the previous title, players would emphasize with Jude’s feelings. For this game, I would like players to feel like I’m the hero – I’m the lead character,” Baba explained.

Oh no, it’s a Kinect game!

  • I was born a hero. My Mommy told me so :3

    • There goes my hero! Watch him as he goes!

      • xavier axol

with a lollipop and a juice box.

    • XiaomuArisu

With a chick like that everyone would destroy the world!
      Make your mommy proud!

  • Guest

I see Japanese developers are slowly adopting some Western rpg game element ideas….

  • … I hope the choices actually change the flow of the story, not just the ending

Or maybe I’m asking too much

  • Xillia 2 better do decision-making as well as Gungnir has, because I have never had as much difficulty making a decision in-game as I have with Gungnir.

    • Daniel Morandi

Really? I think you haven’t played enough games.

      • Right, I totally haven’t.

        • LustEnvy

One does not simply play enough games.

          • Crimson_Cloud

             With decisions at that.

          • Daniel Morandi

             Point taken.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

man the MC looks boss!! He better by voiced by Steven Blum *voice of Spike and Tom*

    • Solomon_Kano

Meh. Doesn’t look manly enough for a Steve Blum voiceover!

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

How about…..Alistair Abell *voice actor of trunks*

      •  Definitely. I’d pick David Matranga to avoid recycling old voice actors and their MC roles.

    • What if he were voiced by… Nathan Fillion?

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        ehhhhhhhhh………..maybe lol

  • Daniel Morandi

I will get the girls! while saving the world…or saving money xD

    • Tales’ very first A Pimp Named Slickback, ladies and gentlemen. :)

  • epy

So, confirmed silent character? I will remain optimistic but I hope this doesn’t become a trend. Funny thing is Baba went on and on how Tales makes games with the japanese in mind first and they won’t change their approach, but here they are implementing all these “western” mechanics.

    • Adopting foreign mechanics isn’t always the same as attempting to reach to another audience. Besides, “choices” are paramount in visual novels, so this is nothing unusual at all for Japan. Persona, Soul Nomad, need I go on?

      • Kevadu

As are silent protagonists for that matter. OK, there are exceptions but it’s still very common for a VN protagonist to be silent.

    • Arrei

Pardon? Affecting the plot by choosing between options is a “western” thing now? I must have missed the memo.

      • epy

No, which is why I said “western”. Choices themselves are not a western mechanic at all, as Garyuu kindly mentioned, but outside of subtle choices in Symphonia (and its sequel), there have never been choices in the Tales series. Also, from the mere implementation of the choices (the way they’re presented, with time limit and all) is, to me, emulating recent WRPGs.

What I’m trying to say is that while the mechanics are not “western” (again with “), the way in which they’re being presented and the timing in the market in which they are being introduced (where WRPGs that use these mechanics are all the rage and people jump at any chance they get to bash JRPGs) lead me to believe they’re emulating or at least being inspired by western gaming trends.

Hope that makes the point of my statement a little bit clearer.

  • Darkrise

And you made him into a silent protagonist? Come on I want a definite answer when it’s bugging me! Also, making us feel like a hero while we have an insane 20 billion gald debt really doesn’t encourage that supposed ‘heroic’ feeling… Especially when I’m still broke since the beginning of summer.

    • Astrid Huang

I personally don’t think Ludger would be a silent protagonist.
He seemed quite, but I’m 90% positive he won’t be silent.
Seems like each time after we make a decision, he will eventually talk. With his voice.

  • I’d like to feel like the lead in Vasperia.

  • klkAlexar

I like shaping a character’s personality as long as they don’t expect me to believe that I’m supposed to be the mc; there’s no way I can pretend they are me since I’m neither white/asian or a guy.

  • Thank god.

That’s all I needed to hear. It was a problem that Elle isn’t playable. But with Ludger not anything like Jude, this game shall be attempted.

    • Youareallcryingmorons

  • kool_cid414

So I’ll be an ex-college student with debts abundant playing the role of someone with a huge amount of debt… It’s like animal crossing with a better combat system! lol

  • Youareallcryingmorons

Well I have comment blocker for firefox now. I did kinda enjoy my time here. I like all of you positive people, leaving REAL constructive criticism and loving things and not throwing your opinion around like it is a fact. But now I will block the abundance of illiterate, vile, pointless, ranting, flame-bait and racist comments that flood Silliconeras comment sections and never have to see them again. I will enjoy videogame news without all the annoying comment section.

    • LustEnvy

I don’t know what just happened, yet I’m okay with this.

    • Jirin

And there’s no better way to show off your superior maturity than to rage-quit an internet forum!

    • Luna Kazemaru

       *looks at your name*
      *looks at your post*
*looks at the one I am replying to*
      You will not be missed.

  • Abhishek Posooa

Easiest way would be the decisions AND character creation >.>

  • harmonyworld

easiest way to make me feel like the hero is character creation!
I would like to be a female main character and I can’t really immerse myself because I am not male.

    • Crimson_Cloud

Agreed with you regarding the character creation. Just having an option to make a decision for a character that isn’t to your liking doesn’t make you feel like that character is yourself.

  • Jirin

I like the way that works in Mass Effect, I’m not so sure how it will fit into a Tales game.  It almost sounds like with ToX2 they’re trying to apply the Mass Effect story options to a Japanese game.  It could work, but I’m skeptical.  I’m not a fan of the ‘MC is avatar for YOU’ thing, and Mass Effect is the only exception I’ve found so far.  One of the strongest aspects of JRPGs for me is the fact all the characters have their own personalities.

In most games with silent leads, you never feel like you’re in control. You feel like you’re being led around by the nose by the NPCs and have no input except for some occasional base good/evil decisions that don’t matter much.

If ToX2 can pull off what Mass Effect pulls off, I’m all for it. But no other game, IMO, has pulled that off.

  • enorka miho

Zack Fair will always be my hero..  But bring it on Namco!!

  • l777l

Rarely does a “decision making system” add deeper meaning and rarely is it superior to a well-written, well-voiced, and well-integrated character. (Irrespective of that, I hope this is not another one of them attempts to “do what Westerners like”. That rarely goes well.)

  • Christopher Nunes

Isn’t that was Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology for? You were the lead character, and could chose your appearance and gender? Well it would be great if that had a Choice System like ToX2 for the TotW: RM series to make your feel like you were in control.

Still I’m interesting in playing this game.
