Tales Of Xillia 2 Has Character Side Stories And, Yes, Jude Mathis Returns

By Spencer . September 4, 2012 . 7:07pm

talesofxFamitsu magazine confirmed Jude Mathis, the protagonist in Tales of Xillia, will return for Tales of Xillia 2. He graduated medical school and works in research facitlity that studies Liese Maxia and Elenpios, the world in Tales of Xillia 2. Jude will join the party as a playable character and he has a couple of new moves like "Ice Shattering Edge." Ibaru also returns in Tales of Xillia 2 drifting in Elenpois wearing the same costume plus sunglasses.

Tales of Xillia 2 is more open ended than the previous game. After story chapters, the party splits and you’re free to explore the world. You can take on quests to repay Ludger’s enormous debt or talk to party members with a red exclamation mark over their head to do a character side story event. Character episodes reward players with special items like clothes and extra event scenes.

Ludger, the main character in Tales of Xillia 2, can transform when you press L3 + R3. Famitsu explains Ludger has more than one form and as the story progresses he will get a second form that’s even stronger.

Tales of Xillia 2 comes out on November 1 and will be playable at Tokyo Game Show.

I’m hype for this but,I’ve gotta play part one before I even think about 2.

  • Clothes = Costumes? If so I hope there are more than in Xillia which was ridiculous.

  • Nameless App 1989

Never played the first Xillia. Did Milla die or something? Because I’ve read nothing on her being a playable character or cameo character.

    • asch999

No, She choose to became a Spirit instead back to became a human IIRC

  • asch999

Jude became Researcher so he can find a way to be with Milla, calling it now

btw Jude new design kinda like Mad Scientist :D

    • MrKappa

Probably true, which is why it is a shame this hack returns.
Jude is seriously the worst main character of a Tales game ever.

      • LynxAmali

        That’s not Luca or Caius?

        Color me surprised.

    •  Jude: I Am Mad Scientist! It’s so COOOORRU! Sonuvabitch!

    • keithmaxx

His new character design is appealing… I just hope his character developed better during the time gap.

  • asch999

    Oops wrong reply

  • MrKappa

I’m getting a bit worried now with all these returning characters. It looks like there won’t be any new teammates at all.
I hope it doesn’t take forever for the team to come together and I also hope people don’t just keep coming and going.

    •  I’m more annoyed than worried. I mean, you can tell that the old characters have their own lives to take care of than going on yet another journey, even more so now that they will just scatter about after a story chapter. If they bring Millia back, chances are this game will be another Gundam Seed Destiny.

      • I’m actually glad they return, I don’t like continuations where none of the old cast has any role to play in the story, it’s like why make it a sequel then? That’s just me, though, I really liked the old cast~

        • Don’t get me wrong. I don’t go against sequels that bring back a few old characters, but bringing back THE ENTIRE CAST in your party is a whole different story. All you can do is give most of the old cast a very significant supporting role (and perhaps making them Guest Party Members) and we’re all good.

          • keithmaxx

By the way the plot sounds they’ll only have supporting roles, so there should be no major worries there. After all, every parts sometime and you can likely ignore whatever further character development there is if you choose to.

        • Daniel Morandi

You have to understand that if a secuel have a new main character part of the main party should be newcomers and even if they hurt their fans because some old character is an NPC is something you have to deal with it. For the sake of a good plot.
In the end is dangerous to take risk like this, their presence are practically stealing the show to the new protagonist.

Tales of Destiny 2 is a good example, sadly they introduce time travels and THAT ruined everything. This dimensional thing in Xillia 2 could be similar and that’s my fear.

      • LynxAmali

        – If they bring Millia back, chances are this game will be another Gundam Seed Destiny.

        It won’t be.

We have new characters who will (hopefully) keep the plot going and develop, unlike Destiny’s ‘main’ characters.

And besides, Jude most likely won’t hijack the entire plot like a certain Beamspamming Yamato.

        •  – And besides, Jude most likely won’t hijack the entire plot like a certain Beamspamming Yamato.

That is, if the writers don’t allow it. But really, that’s what I’m hoping for: old characters with significant roles that don’t overshadow the new characters, however few of them there are.

    •  What I dont’ understand is why they wanted to do Xilia 2 instead of a new mothership Tales… I guess the team had A LOT of materials left over from Xillia 1 (which they have admitted they did cut out a significant portion of content for Xillia 1 because of time constraint…)

  • IshimaruKaito

any news on the US release of the first xillia?

    • DS23

      Nothing set besides ‘2013’.

      • MrRobbyM

Next to that in the tiniest text size possible in parentheses it says “more like never hahahahaha stupid Americans”

  • MrRobbyM

This keeps getting better and better.

Edit: This rings a few FFXIII bells once again. Not a bad thing.

  • leadintea

I hope the character episodes will be as deep as the ones in Tales of Legendia. ToL had the most fleshed out characters in the entire Tales series, IMO.

    • Revorse

Well yeah. Each character had their character quest which was like, what, 4 hours or so dedicated to that character.

    • Jirin

Eh.  They fleshed out the characters in Tales of Legendia but the characters were a little too annoying for it to work that well.  Also the character quests mostly involved retreading the exact same dungeons with new treasures, and mostly followed the same pattern:

“Character addresses personal issue from first half of game”
“Distraught by this issue, character runs off alone in fit of temporary insanity”
“Party catches up to character, they realize immediately that they must overcome their personal demon and conform to kindergarden morality standards”
      “Fight random shadow creature”
“Party members forgive every evil person in the world no matter what they did before as long as they’re sorry now”
“Party members all say how much they love each other and have a picnic”.

That entire second half of the game was incredibly lazy and formulaic, and they should have at the very least made new dungeons (And more likable characters).

  • Interesting. A bit of variation in the flow of gameplay is a nice touch.

  • For some reason the charac looks better in-game than the charac art lol.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

…… why does Jude gives me some vibe of Hope from FF13 lol. And both of them are scientist and…… their so called”love interest” is no longer with them.^_^

  • XiaomuArisu

Shut up and take my money….after I finished Graces.
“I came from 1 week in the future. Please stop sending monsters at us.”

  • zferolie

I have been avoiding spoilers for the first game, though it sounds like something happens to Milla… shame, since I like her style, plus she is the first female main character in a tales game.

Sure she shares that role with Jude, but still, that’s something.

    • Jazlynn Lim

I find it pretty hard to say anything without spoiling the first game’s ending, so if you don’t mind being spoiled you should go look it up; it’s pretty easy to find.

      • zferolie

For some games I don’t mind, but for games I love a lot, like Tales, I’m going to keep avoiding spoilers. That being said, I do hope she shows up somehow in this game.

That, and I hope more future Tales games have Female leads. It seems to be growing more in JRPG’s to have female leads, and I support that.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

American/Euro: We want the Tales of, and crossover games too

Namco: But you have Final fantasy and western RPGs if we release them there they will have poor sells.

  • Jirin

Chapters, huh?  Meh.  I don’t see why stories in RPGs should be organized into closed episodes.  Why do RPG companies need to continuously reinvent the wheel with their storytelling?

I love the idea of character side quests but not if they’re organized into closed ‘episodes’.

  • Jonathan Keycross

    Ludger.-“Nova, we saved the world!”
Nova.-“And you forgot to tell your brother to pay his debt…”

There is only one type of “Episode based” mechanic that I hate and that´s the one where they don´t make it clear to you that the episode is about to end. I already lost count the amount of times I had to reset a game just because a certain side quest or event was missed thanks to the transition to the next episode.

So this sounds like great news to me.

  • dont’ bother with the first… The second has a recap of the first… The first Xillia was possibly the worst Tales ever… it’s like FFXIII of the Tales series… Trust me. Even the creators weren’t happy with the first one but they released anyways due to time constraint for the Tales Anniversary event…

    • Oh jesus….it isn’t even bad! It just let many people down due to how much was missing. Still an amazing game though.

    • LynxAmali

Tales of the Tempest says hi!
