Here’s Akaneiro: Demon Hunter, A Fantasy Action RPG Set In Feudal Japan

In 2006, American McGee, known for his work on id Software titles such as the early Doom and Quake games, as well as American McGee’s Alice, founded a development studio named Spicy Horse Games in Shanghai. Spicy Horse are currently working on a fantasy action RPG titled Akaneiro: Demon Hunters for PC.

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is set in feudal Japan and has you fighting youkai, demons from Japanese myths and folklore. You can watch a trailer for the game above. The trailer also mentions at one point that the game will be free-to-play.

A closed beta-test for Akaneiro: Demon Hunters will begin soon, and you can sign up for it here. Spicy Horse haven’t announced a release date for the game yet, but they are looking into a Steam release for the game. If you like, you can vote for it on Steam Greenlight here.

  • You mean… youkai aren’t all cute girls living in a dimensional rift somewhere in present-day Japan?

  • Looks like a real-time Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke, right down to the visuals and setting.

    • Nickie

My exact thoughts. If people like this they should go to xSeed forums and support Ore no Shikabanein the forum post because this looks almost exactly like it just some differences.

  • I’m a sucker for feudal japanese style games. I also loved McGee’s Alice, so I’m definitely going to subscribe and impatiently wait for the closed beta.

Another game, that for, some reason, has to go through Steam Greenlight.

  • This game looks really cool. Just went and put in a sign up for the closed beta. Hopefully it will be as fun as it looks. I love Japanese folklore and would love to see it drawn upon more often in the video game world (at least in games that actually reach Western shores).

  • The art style is gorgeous.

Is this what became of that “gritty Red Riding Hood” game that was in conception sometime during the development of Madness Returns?
