Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Is Getting A Sequel At Long Last

By Ishaan . November 1, 2012 . 8:30am

Adventure game, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, is getting a sequel six years after its release, publisher, Funcom, announced this morning. The sequel will be titled Dreamfall Chapters.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey itself is a sequel to 1999’s The Longest Journey, a very popular PC adventure game that takes place across two worlds—one based on science and the other on magic. The Longest Journey was designed by game designer, Ragnar Tørnquist, and featured a character named April Ryan as its protagonist. For Dreamfall, Zoë Castillo took over as protagonist.

Dreamfall Chapters will be developed by Tørnquist’s Red Thread Games studio, who have licensed the rights to the universe of The Longest Journey franchise. Tørnquist will spearhead development of the new game, which is currently in pre-production.

It should be noted that Funcom still own the intellectual property rights to The Longest Journey franchise. However, with the studio focused on online games, their strong relationship with Tørnquist allowed for the licensing deal to come through.

“I’m very excited to finally have the opportunity to continue the ‘The Longest Journey’ saga,” said Tørnquist. “Ever since we ended Dreamfall on a nail-biting cliffhanger, players have been rightfully demanding a sequel, and my deal with Funcom will finally make that possible.”

Finally I can get some closure!

I would love a remake of the first games with updated graphics. I mean, I’m no grafix whore at all but it would do the game some serious justice. Its still great regardless though.

Wee!! Can’t believe it was 12 years ago since Dreanfall. Time sure does fly. . .

6 for dreamfall, 12 for the longest journey.

Finally, I was following Ragnar Tørnquist bloog fore a wile before he took it down a few years ago. He was pretty clear that he was planing on making a sequel but and that he had the base of the story down already but couldn’t start development before he was fully finished whit the projects he was working on then and that it was going to take a wile. The name was mentioned long ago and by that time they was planing on hawing episodic content. Seems that Tørnquist was planing on hawing different MC in the different episodes, some new some old, but their is a big chance they change that now that production is starting.
Don’t think I’ve written this much on this site ever.
And @landlock:disqus it was the first game The longest Journey that was realised 12 years ago not Dreamfall

    Instant buy.

Sweet. Still need to play these though, bought them on Steam one year because I heard good things and the videos I watched of them were spiff.

An original creator  getting the go-ahead from the current holder of a license to wrap up loose threads in the plotline, even though he’s no longer working there, and finish things up the way he wanted it. Even if I’m not a follower of this franchise, this is still the kind of thing that makes angels shed tear of liquid gold and which should be supported with money and acts of physical pleasure. Meanwhile, we Megaman Legends fans are just… gonna sit here and cry regular tears, I guess.
