Skullgirls Sees Massive Update Patch With Balance Tweaks And More

By Ishaan . November 19, 2012 . 5:40pm

Skullgirls has a free update patch on the PlayStation Network today, with an Xbox Live patch to follow at a later date. The patch, according to Reverge, includes over 300 improvements and tweaks to the game.

Official patch notes will be made available by Reverge later, but Mike Zaimont, the game’s project lead, posted early detailed patch notes on the forums a few months ago for the Skullgirls community to peruse. You can find those here.

From the patch notes on the Shoryuken forums, some of the changes include:

Re-balanced AI difficulty.

3% game speed increase. (Does not affect frame data)

Added Tournament Mode.

U.S. and European versions now compatible against each other.

Improved loading times on Xbox 360.

Matchmaking includes Australia, Central/South America, Brazil, Gulf Coast, more.

Far more extensive patch notes can be found at the link above.

A big thanks to Siliconera reader, Sai, for the heads up!

Can’t wait for the individual character tutorials. I’m absolute bunk at this game, so I really appreciate the basics. :>

There’s just so much effort put into teaching the players in this game. I’d say it has the best tutorial I’ve ever seen. And the AI is amazing; it’s brutal, but you almost always deserve it when you get hit.

My only worry about this patch is about how badly they nerfed Double. I hope the effects aren’t too noticeable…

  • hopefully Peacock’s AI is not like a bad Mugen character anymore  o ,o

    also, movelists IN-GAME?

    • Cellsai

Yep, in game move lists in all their convenient glory!

  • Blesmi

Wow it finally came out. How pleasantly surprising.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

This means I don’t have to rage beyond belief when fighting Painwheel anymore. Yaaaay

  • Mnstrzero00

    Mine isn’t updating

    • Cellsai

The patch goes live at midnight PST or 0700 GMT, so hang in there for another few hours!

  • Oh here is the legendary patch that everyone has been waiting for.

  • AkuLord3

oh happy day, i hope we can get the DLC characters Umbrella and Sqiuggly.  I know it be a while so i’ll support the team enough for it, very worth it indeed

  • Hinataharem

    I’ve been waiting for this!

  • This is wonderful news! I love playing SkullGirls and this will make it all the better =^_^=

  • “Skullgirls Sees Massive Update Patch With Balance Tweaks And More”

    …for the wrong console.

    • Robert Leonardi

“with an Xbox Live patch to follow at a later date.”

      • “Without regard for the resulting irreconcilable disparity in skill between the platforms that could have been avoided.”

        • Robert Leonardi

where on earth did you quote that up from ? Its neither in this article, nor in the official patch notes. And i don’t think it will matter that much either considering that the two consoles have different servers to begin with, meaning that the changes in the PS3 version won’t affect those at xbox 360, and 360 would get the same patch with a few additions anyways

          • The wait will cause the PS3 players to condescend on the 360 players even more, and now that they’re playing different games, whatever point you were making is moot.

          • Robert Leonardi

not only did you not cite the source of your “quote”, but you add even more nonsense with this ?

that just because getting an update quicker will make ps3 players ascend to skullgirls godhood over 360 players ? I’m not sure on how the heck does that logic even work, and that very last statement of yours too… oh my god did you seriously bite your own tail there, if you say that, that means you’re throwing your complaints for no reason…

          • You either missed or exaggerated my point, but yes, the indeterminate wait will cause competitive unfairness at no fault to the players.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Your post… please go back to srk.

      • mikanko

I don’t think most people who post on SRK show that level of system bias. =P

Granted if you base assumptions on the trolls and haters who post on the front page that’d be different, but those are just haters who’re trolling and are best ignored anyways.

        • You’re right, they don’t. I was surprised to see that there are very few people whining about this at all, so I stepped in to fill the quota. Most people who show salt for this kind of thing usually direct it to the developers and publishers. The difference is that I blame it on the community.

    • Grenalie

For the better of the two.

  • Robert Leonardi

hopefully there will be lesser “infinite” combos =X, kinda hate it when my friend spams valentine’s dash & slash attack till my hp bar goes to zero >.>

    • xXDGFXx

      I find it disturbing that there isn’t a combo-break system incorporated…

      • Cellsai

There is. Once a combo becomes an infinite you can burst out of any combo for free.
However, combos were still excessively long in the first build of Skullgirls. Now with the patch combos are declared infinites much earlier, so they can be broken much quicker.

    • Cellsai

The Infinite Prevention System was tweaked in the patch – combos will now have to be much shorter.

  • CirnoLakes

And as this happens we still haven’t gotten the promised Steam version. I’m still waiting on Steam to get this game.

    They’ll give it to us eventually… right… right…? ;_;

    • Cellsai

  • TrevHead

sigh so no patch for the 360? I guess the 360 community is screwed.

Since I don’t have a PS3 I hope the PC version with crossplay isn’t too far away.

    • Cellsai

There will be a 360 patch. Microsoft just hasn’t finished putting it through certification yet.

Since it’s already passed Sony’s it’s very unlikely to fail MS’s.

  • Go2hell66

    patch is now live

  • mikanko

If people don’t know a large reason the patch has been delayed so long is most of the developers were laid off in June.  They’ve had to start a new development studio, and are still trying to resume work on the game while being pretty close to unemployed.

If you’d like their publisher Autumn games to continue supporting this game via their new studio please head over to one of the following online petitions:

Knowing there is public interest in still buying new Skullgirls stuff will apparently go a long way to getting the game funded again.

    • Go2hell66

oh noooz mike z is unemployed D:

    •  Source?

      • mikanko
        • So that’s it then. They’re dead. The patch will never come out for the only console I have. At least I won’t have to worry about it anymore.

So who wants to place bets on when this game’s equivalent of BlazBlue comes out? Which is a shame because I hate BlazBlue.

          • mikanko

Umm, the patch was sent to Microsoft for certification the same day it was sent to Sony, it just hasn’t been approved yet.  It’ll probably be passed shortly.

          • No offense, but I’ve been misled about this so many times that I don’t know who to trust anymore. I can’t even trust the developer itself, much less the publisher. Even if it does come out, I can no longer play it in good conscience because I somehow feel responsible.

  • XiaomuArisu

Time to play with the Skullgirls again!XD

  • Göran Isacson

Nneeat. Think I might have to get behind some of this sexay SkullGirlz action soon, because I am nothing if not weak to slickly produced 2D fighters. And if a patch has fixed some problems, all the better! How much does it go for on PSN?

    • Hope you got 15bux, boyo.

As well as some money left over for planned paid DLC in the near future.

  • Thanks for the reminder. I need to go back to this –  I really enjoyed it on release and feel a bit guilty about not giving it my full attention.

  • anarchy_panty

About goddamn time. And all the changes to Painwheel are making me pretty happy. I guess it’s time to break out Skull Girls again…

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

I hope they release a PC version soon…

  • just an update on this. the SG team split from Reverge Labs. this actually happened not too long ago and their new logo can be seen after the patch is done installing and on boot-up.

  • never played this, how is it as a fighting game?(good, bad, average, etc…)

    • Cellsai

Very good. It’s really easy to string together basic combos if you’re not into fighters that much, but there’s massive depth if you want to go hardcore into the game.
There’s also an amazing tutorial mode that will make you so much better at every fighting game, and not just Skullgirls.

Grab the demo at least – it’s free and you can decide if you want to keep going after :)
