Ubisoft won’t be able to take the "Atlus of Japan" title. That goes to Spike Chunsoft who made licensing Western games for Japan a cornerstone of their business. Darksiders II, The Witcher 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and before Square Enix merged with Eidos the Tomb Raider titles were all localized by Spike.
Now, Ubisoft is dabbling in localizing European games for Japan and we’re not talking about their own titles. Ubisoft handled The Cursed Crusade and released the Japanese version in February. The Splinter Cell developer just announced they licensed Risen 2: Dark Water and will localize the title for Japan. Risen 2: Dark Water is an interesting pick up since Spike Chunsoft has a relationship with Deep Silver. Dead Island and Dead Island: Zombie of the Year Edition are Spike Chunsoft titles.
Savvy Siliconera readers know Square Enix is also in the English to Japanese localization business and have a long term relationship with Activision. Square Enix also brought Lit (under the name School of Darkness) from WayForward, Bejeweled Blitz, and Lost Winds to Japan.
