Monster Hunter 4’s New Weapon Is The Charge Axe

By Sato . December 11, 2012 . 3:02pm

Capcom recently teased us with a silhouette of a large weapon with three prongs from Monster Hunter 4. This has been revealed as the Charge Axe.

The Charge Axe may look like a powerful weapon at first glance, but that’s not all. It can split between two modes: Sword Mode and Axe Mode.

In Sword Mode, players will hold a shield on the right hand and sword on the left. They can use the shield to guard, while using the sword for speedy attacks and combos. In this mode, players can charge energy from accumulated hits to releases a sword and shield combined charge attack.

Players can gauge how much energy has been charged by taking a look at the bottle hanging on the hilt. When it starts glowing yellow, Charge Axe users can perform a charge attack. This can be taken to a higher level by attacking more to change it to a red glow, for a maximum damage charge attack! It is possible to continue attacking while switching to Axe Mode.

Axe Mode will have an advantage in power and reach, with an even stronger charge attack. Its regular attacks will have a powerful finisher that can stun the enemy. It will also be possible for players to continue attacking in Axe Mode while switching to Sword Mode.

  • So it’s a Switch-axe++, lol. Sounds nice. :3

  • Shadowman

Sounds awesome an Axe that can go to Sword and Shield and back into an Axe again.

  • Rudy Soto

I guess I’ll have to wait for some gameplay to see how it plays out.

  • Captain_Jiruo

A Switch-Axe that has an SnS-like sword mode instead of a great sword one?
I wonder if the axe mode will be like the Switch Axe or If it might be faster like a Longsword.

    • Exkaiser

Sounds like the axe mode will be the slower, more powerful mode on this weapon.

  • The switch axe was my favorite weapon, great sword and long sword were second, prefer not to use long sword online, tripping all hunters.

  • ragingmerifes

It would be cool to go on a quest with two weapons and easily change between them, too.

  • Captain_Jiruo

Anybody have a Reliable source for this info? I can’t find one so I’m thinking this could just be a rumour.

  • konsama

So this one instead of going Axe-Greatsword goes Axe-Shield n Sword…Interesting.

  • ronin4life

Sounds… weird. Well, mostly because it sounds to similar to the switch axe.

Why not have a switch spear? Changes from an axe(or scythe… oooo) into a two handed spear? That would have been cool… maybe.

    Here is a pic:

Looks to me like the character is in mid switch…

  • Namuro

That’s pretty awesome, another transformable weapon! Charge Axe seems quite handy with the addition of a speedy weapon and the ability to guard, which Slash Axe lacks. It’s nice how both mode gets its own charge attack, which will make the sword-shield mode more fun and interesting to use for me (I’ve always found the sword-shield to be a bit boring to use since it doesn’t really have any special attack). I hope there’ll be a video footage soon!

*After reading from Gematsu, it seems there’s no charged attack for the Sword-Shield mode after all, but that weapon still looks really cool, I can’t wait to try it out!

  • That’s interesting. This is obviously meant to give newer players who stick mostly to Sword & Shield a way to get acquainted with a heavy-class weapon that requires a bit more skill and precise timing to use. Very smart. I don’t think any of us saw this coming, but it makes perfect sense.

  • sd28

    my new secondary weapon

  • Minos
  • Tsunamori Nanashi

this is actually extremely disappointing. considering how inventive they were with the insect control rod, this sounds a bit like a pushover. it’s like they were “meh, we did an axe that turns into a sword… well, might as well make a sword that turns into an axe…”

    • Go2hell66

as much as i like them being inventive with their weapons i’d rather they actually make weapons that are capable of killing a huge dragon, i’d say a giant axe is definitely capable of doing that, killing dragons with insects is just too far fetched

    • that one guy

yeah i agree, when i first heard that there was going to be a new weapon i hoped that they were going to make a new gunner weapon like dual pistols. because melee weapons FAR out number gunner weapons. Then when they reveled the silhouette I was a little disappointed seeing that it was most likely a new melee weapon like a fan (which would have been BA) Now seeing that it is a new switch weapon similar to a switch axe i am really disappointed. Still hoping for the best and waiting for some awesome gameplay though. .

  • Go2hell66

think i might have found my new weapon, but really depends on the damage output. if the damage output is stilll too low i might just stick with Greatsword and Hammer

    • teknik1200

I made a switch from hammer to hunting horn and wow is it satisfying! It plays like a hammer but it has a far greater move list and it combos differently based on the lead into the attack and direction on the thumb stick. It’s really fun and KOing monsters while playing songs is sweet. It’s a bit harder to get KOs off than the hammer but you’ll still be seeing them often once you get it down.

  • Draparde

that sounds pretty nice, i wonder if tihs is the last new weapon type, or will they be trying to equal the amount from MH1~MH2.

  • I wonder if you can still drink potions and all with the weapons out, just like with the regular Sword & Shield
