By Spencer . December 19, 2012 . 1:35am

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is coming to North America in spring 2013. Originally released for Sega Saturn, Soul Hackers has been enhanced for the Nintendo 3DS with an auto-mapping function on the bottom screen and the ability to change difficulty levels mid-dungeon. The 3DS version also has 30 more demons, a new theme song, and anime opening.

Of course, the most important feature is Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers has been localized in English.

  • Ladius

Fantastic news, let’s hope Persona 2 EP’s PSP port can make it to the west, too :)

  • Marcelo Gouvea

As the non-believer who believed Atlus wouldn’t bring this stateside in the DeSu2 post, I apologize, and state that I’M SO EXCITED CAN’T WAIT MY WALLET IS READY

    • LightZero

I don’t even know why you had doubts in the first place. Atlus almost always localize their games ever since Nocturne. EP PSP might be the only exception that’s only because the PSP is dead in the west. Like I said to other doubters. You need to have patience. You can’t expect to have things handed to you when you want it.

  • LegendaryLos

    YES.

  • Raze

Now we will just have to wait patiently for SMTIV (Hopefully P2EP too)….
    And after that?DS2 Overclocked…
And then…I wonder what other project Atlus have…..
    Of course Its P5!!
But I still believe that they will remake SMT Nocturne before releasing P5….

    • Tails the Foxhound

I intentionally skipped DS2 thinking an Overclocked would come soon. The wait for an announcement is interminable.

    • Ninten

DS2 is roughly 1,5 years old. Why would it already need an Overclocked version?

      • Ethan_Twain

        Two reasons:

        1. Because Devil Survivor 1 Overclocked was a successful product.

        2. Because Devil Survivor 2 is getting an anime adaptation and it would be crazy NOT to rerelease the game to try and get some cross marketing going there. They did it with P4 Golden and P4 Animation, and the same strategy should work well here too.

        • LightZero

I could somewhat get the first game. It was used as a test for the 3DS market. Not that it was any better especially since you can play DS games on your 3DS. However, the second point is the only valid reason I can accept. It sucks for those of us who spent $30+ on the game this year.

Honestly, I much rather we get Devil Survivor 3 instead.

      • kylehyde

and maybe three, DS1 was 1,5 years old when overclocked was ported so theres no problem with bringing the second game of this series to 3DS. Still I agree with you, it appears a strange move to port a game which eve was released less than two years ago and localized in this year. However I think that reasons 1 and 2 appear to be main reason of this choice.

  • puchinri

I’m surprised people really doubted this coming over. (Reasonably so or not.)

Even though I’m still butt-hurt over lack of Nora (and always will be), that seemed like something that did actually have a lower chance of coming over, and I’m very excited to see it made official for Soul Hackers.

My 3DS is so ready for next year~.

    • Göran Isacson

What is “Nora”? A game, or a character in this game?

      • cj_iwakura

A DS game published by Atlus in Japan. Nora and the Studio or some such. It looked wonderful, never got localized.

        • Göran Isacson

Ah, looked it up and it did indeed seem quite charming. Pity that it never got a chance.

      • puchinri

        What cj_iwakura said. ;u;
It would have been awesome to have.

        • Göran Isacson

Agreed, it looked really cute… although I wonder if it is too late now, or if the 3DS has made conversions of DS games a fools errand.

          • puchinri

I really feel like it isn’t too late, especially for an Atlus game. Atlus has a healthy niche here, and they could advertise it enough probably (like the EO4 trailers), and I know there are plenty that want it still.

Whether Atlus themselves (or other companies, really) believe that, or will use the 3DS to justify not localizing DS titles (aside from just Nora) is really the question though.

          • Göran Isacson

We can always hope. Second worst case scenario, they may be convinced to just release it for online download on the 3DS?

          • puchinri

I would be so sad for no physical OST option and all, but would really love and appreciate that still.

  • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

my body is ready, but not my wallet, as I still do not have a 3ds!!!

  • CirnoLakes

A little sad that it has to be on a handheld. But it is certainly is far far better than nothing.

    • Elvick

Personally, I prefer handhelds these days. I know not everyone does though, but I just love being able to play where ever I feel like it.

    • Zeik56

What else would it be on? This is a port of an almost 15 year old game, they’d never get away with releasing it on a console. It’s not like SMT4 where it might have been different had it made it to a console.

    • LightZero

This game would sell like crap on console. I don’t even know why you are complaining. It would need a complete remake from the ground up to even remotely sell well enough on the PS3/360. Even then it wouldn’t sell that well because it’s not Persona. Handhelds are cheaper and more accessible. Not to mention people would be far more forgiving of a Sega Saturn port on the 3DS.

  • Ninten

Hopefully Europe will get it too!

Besides, this game is really SUPERB. Pure old-school SMT. If people liked SJ, they will probably like SH too.

    • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

      SJ is bloody awesome!!!

    • Julien_N

I am enjoing SJ a lot, so I hope the game will be released in PAL regions even more.
We will finally see if this is, as some say, “one of the best SMT games ever”…

      • Ninten

It is godtier among SMT games.

      • $36598391

It looks awesome i hope it’s released everywhere

    • Crok425

      I’ll obviously like it.
Is it just me or my comments keep getting either deleted or just don’t show up?

    • MrTyrant

Also Soul Hacker has more story/dialogues and everything else is similar to SJ. So it’s a good combination and even if you dislike Strange Journey try giving SH an opportunity.

  • Laith Rem

Okay Atlus I need to confess something to you.

    I doubted you.

I know it was wrong of me, but you know you were just so tight lipped that I… I doubted you.

I am sorry, I hope we can, you know, still be cool, still be okay.

Also bring P2: EP because I want to have all the Personas on a portable console. Please.

    • Ethan_Twain

You DOUBTED them? You doubted Atlus of America? Oh my gosh… if we don’t see Persona 2: Eternal Punishment now it’s gonna be all YOUR fault you know. They try to be super fan friendly and nice to everyone but they’re so naive .. it’s real easy to hurt their feelings. Persona 4 Arena only got region locked because of all those sub-par reviews Code of Princess and Growlanser Wayfarer of Time got.

      • Elvick

None of that makes sense to me.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

          I’m fairly certain Yesshua’s joking. :)

      • Robert M. Fenner

        It won’t be his fault.

and P4A came out two months before code of princess–it was region locked so Japanese gamers wouldn’t import the cheaper Western copy.

        what the heck?

        • Zeik56

          He was pretty obviously joking.

          • Robert M. Fenner

IT’S NOT FUNNY IF YOU HAVE TO ASPLAIN IT

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Excuse me while I squeal lol. Honestly XD MY BODY IS REA- WAIT- My wallet is not ready for a 3DS!!

SMT DS SH…. still can’t beat SMT DS2 RK vs KA ;P
Love the song. Is it in the original game or is it a new one? Also SH anime where?? But I can live with a english SH. Also sorry tht I doubted you, ATLUS.

  • Andrew Arndt

this made mz moring when i checked mz mail saw the stul email with this game title in it made me freak out

  • Tachimukai

Oh Atlus, you always know how to take my money.

Most definitely a Day 1 buy for me.

  • Tales_of_Master

**** YEAH FINALLY. I was really starting to worry for a moment there. Too bad the teaser doesn’t show any of the voice acting. I’m interested to see if they’re going to re-do the voices in English or keep them in Japanese….or maybe give us both ? Anyway, I’m so excited for this, and here is hoping for Atlus to release a LE or something. I would buy 5 copies if Atlus ever released one for DSSH.

  • Herok♞

Great news now if they can bring Persona 2: EP then I will have absolute faith in Atlus no matter what.

    • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Agreed. But maybe include a SMT4 localization announcement too.

  • Ethan_Twain

All right! That was a pretty exciting trailer. I’ve not seen enough anime to pin down the characteristics, but that was very distinctly not modern anime. Looked more like Serial Experiments Lain (which is most of my retro anime exposure) than Persona 3/4. Not that there’s anything wrong with the contemporary style, but I love that this game is visually distinct from the rest of the SMT fold.

The SMT games generally are good about carving out their own visual niche I realize. DDS was all about the dead eyes and minimalist facial animation. Persona is straight up shounen anime. Devil Survivor is more unfortunately distinct with it’s huge mouths and gravity resistant D cups on every female character.

This trailer sort of had the anime thing from Persona going on, but it kinda had the DDS eyes going on too. I really look forward to taking this game for a spin and seeing how else it stands apart.

    • DesmaX

Well, this was originally released on the Sega Saturn, so no wonder it looks different than Persona

    • Zeik56

Well this was back when Kaneko was still their full time SMT artist, so the designs are distinctively his. Especially his early stuff.

I do like the heavy cyberpunk vibe though. The SMT series has always had a bit of that, but not nearly as strong as here.

    • LightZero

I put it to you this way. Soul Hackers, P1, and both P2s have a more mid to late 90s to early 00s anime style which make sense because this is a 15 years old game. Just like SMT1 and 2 have a more late 80s to early 90s anime style.

  • cjeromek

I was just talking to my brother yesterday about whether or not SH would make it stateside. As soon as I got the e-mail from ATLUS I went ahead and made the preorder. I’ve never been disappointed by a Shin Megami Tensei or Dragon Quest game so those will always be no-brainers.

I’m just happy I’ll have something to tide me over as I wait for them to announce the localization of SMT IV.

  • Alphabet Soup

Atlus is awesome – their track record is fabulous in recent years! Hoping for SMTIV and P2:EP!

  • Zharkiel

Spring is going to be quite loaded for 3DS owners. Competition is going to be sky high for niche localizations and things might get messy if nintendo announces a spring release for Luigi’s mansion 2.

Instead of having pushed EVERYTHING to Q1 2013 publishers should have spread their releases through the year, because seriously: Fire Emblem, Etrian Odyssey, Soul Hackers, Monster Hunter 3G, and Unchained Blades for the late comers, all in the first 3 months of the year? My wallet might not take it.

On the other hand, next year is looking good for dungeon crawling aficionados.

    • neetyneety

Indeed, next year is looking mighty fine for RPG 3DS fans. Been sorta quiet on the 3DS scene these past few months, but all the spectacular releases next year more than make up for it. I do agree with you though that they should have spread them out more… maybe a highlight game for each month would have been better? Well, for our wallets at least.

      • Zharkiel

Probably had to do with Nintendo wanting to focus the highlights on the Wii U, making everyone push everything until next year /tinfoil hat on

  • Göran Isacson

While I personally can’t say I’m interested in first-person RPG’s, I just might be swayed into obtaining this one because ATLUS seldom fails to present an intriguing story. If that is the case here, then I’ma go get my computer-gunning on come Spring.

  • Neppygear

Welp, that seals it. P2EP isn’t gonna happen.

    • Ninten

Couldn’t have actually said it better.

    • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

They should put the original on PS1 classic at least. I don’t have an account there yet so hopefully people are suggesting that option.

      • Barrylocke89

I agree. Unlike Revelations: Persona, Persona 2: EP actually had a solid localization (the only major issues were that it did it’s best to retain the Revelations names like Ellen and Nate). It wouldn’t be the best option, but at least newcomers to the series could complete the Persona 2 saga.

  • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

Please Ghostlight (or any other amazing European publisher), do pick this game up eventually, or I’ll have to get an american 3DS to play this (and SMT IV).

    One step closer!

  • AweOfShe

    Preordering.

  • Gabi López Ramírez

YEAH!!!! Good news. :) Good news indeed.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

    No voice acting?

    • MrTyrant

      ….no voices? really?

    • Marcelo Gouvea

Wh-wha? Did they say that? O_O

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

        It doesnt say there is.

        • amagidyne

          You’re a bit of a troll, aren’t you.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

            it’s what he’s good at.

    • Zeik56

Calm down, they just didn’t put it in the launch trailer, not really that unusual. I guarantee it’s still in the game.

  • MrTyrant

YES YES!! I want this so bad. This game plus Fire Emblem make my year with 3DS.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Love you Atlus

  • Jonattas F.

Atlus the most adorable video game company ever!

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

I am so happy right now. This is truly an early Christmas gift in a form of a announcement.

  • natchu96

    Reminds me that I need to buy a 3DS someday . . . meh.

  • imaguni

Yaaay, exciting news! Seconding all the wishes for Europe to get the game too, and at a reasonable time!

  • Mister_Nep

I’ve never been a fan of first person RPGs, but after playing Soul Trigger I think I’m more open to the idea. So I’ll be keeping my eye on this title.

  • Julien_N

I cant understand those who thought the game wouldn’t be released in NA.
Honestly, the game is on the 3DS, has a good reputation, is not on a deader that dead system, and is a SMT game. Why on earth would Atlus USA skip it ?

(Australia and Europe, on the other hand…)
It still feels great to know that the localization is confirmed, I admit that’s very cool!

  • kylehyde

Is more than official, Atlus is going to rule the 2013.

  • benhofb

With DeSu Overclocked, SMTIV, that unannounced DeSu2 thing, and this, the 3DS is becoming quite the Shin Megami Tensei machine!

  • amagidyne

Fantastic! Wonder if it’ll get a European release. We never got Strange Journey, so forgive me for being a little skeptical.

  • http://www.twitch.tv/jpnags Jason Naglic

    YEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Spirit Macardi

Nothing surprising here. Atlus doing something awesome is always a given x3

  • revenent hell

well i seen this comeing so im stoked about the officil word and as others have said cant wait for word on EP…though this does passify me for a while,I want to pre order it already lol.

  • Hoshi星

Best Christmas gift ever! THANK YOU ATLUS USA

  • Jessi Cat

While I didn’t doubt this game would be coming to the west, I’m just skeptical of the quality of the voice acting; the JP version had some top-notch seiyuu… I guess if all else fails I can mute the voices XD
(I own the JP version of Soul Hackers but can’t play it because region lock…well, whenever I get around to buying a 3ds anyways.)

    • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Dont SMT games usually have dual audio? THIS GAME NEEDS DUAL AUDIO

      • Zeik56

The only MegaTen game that has ever had dual-audio was Persona 4 Arena, and that actually caused some problems for them. I would not count on it being in the game.

        • Jessi Cat

Yea, I didn’t even bother buying P4A, I think I was the only person who boycotted it though, rofl. Oh well. I don’t mind a release date delay if it means the JP voices can stay; not like that matters 3DS is region locked anyways

      • Jessi Cat

DDS1+2 didn’t, P3 and P4 didn’t… Though at least in those cases I could still play an import (Argilla’s voice in Japanese is hideous btw XD) I’ll just be disappointed with the lack of JP voices if that’s the case I guess (I really want to hear Gouto and Raidou in JP ._.)

  • http://www.jb2x.com/wordpress/ JB2X

First, they note that they’ll be re-releasing Etrian Odyssey 1-3 in celebration of the 4th game’s release and now this? Atlus, why do you insist in taking my money?

  • AkuLord3

Had no doubt…just have to have patience

  • Barrylocke89

I will be responsible with my money…I will be responsible with my money…

ATLUS, Stop making this so hard!!

    • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

They are taking all my money. lol

  • AlteisenX

    Can. Not. Wait!

  • Jason

Although this is good news, it would be really good to get some news on the “Persona 3DS” game we heard about from Atlus from near the 3DS launch about a year ago

    • Zeik56

Pretty sure that doesn’t actually exist. It was likely just something Atlus was considering when the 3DS was launched and “announced” it to get people hyped for the console (or more likely, Nintendo asked them to “announce” it), and then later dropped it.

Atlus Japan is too busy working on SMT4 and Persona 5 to be working on a 3DS Persona game.

      • LightZero

Devil Survivor became a game. Shin Megami Tensei became a game. The unannounced Persona could very well be revealed too. Hell it could even be P5 especially with how popular the 3DS is in Japan. It already exceeded the PS3′s userbase. It’s a little too early to write off the possibility of a Persona 3DS title.

        • Zeik56

I’m pretty certain they already revealed that P5 is going to be for HD consoles. I recall a quote that said they were decided to build a new proprietary engine over using Catherine’s.

It’s not impossible that a 3DS Persona game will happen eventually, but I doubt it’s currently in development.

  • Crok425

I don’t have a 3DS…. *grabs gun* time to rob someone.
Jokes aside, this is awesome news, I I’ll try to get it one day :D.

  • Crok425

    Awesome!

  • Junko Enoshima

    YYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

GOD ATLUS I NEED TO GIVE HUGS

    Now, release P2EP.

  • ragingmerifes

This is the best news of the year. Really, if Mila Kunis appeared to me right now and said “you look down, let’s have sex”, I’d scream “I’M HAPPY, BITCH” and slap her out of my house.
I’m really expecting this. More than even Shin Megami Tensei IV.

P.S.: If it were Zooey Deschanel, I’d have to accept.

    • ragingmerifes

What a stupid way to try to crack a joke. You should DIE for commenting something I didn’t find good. RETARD. IDIOT. I’m gonna kill your mom and bake a pie off her brains, you jerk.
      Mods, get him.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/JadenPrinceton C.Guzman

I was eating while scrolling and I started choking. I’M SO EXCITED. Actually excited sounds like an understatement 8D

  • brian

    “The missing entry”
Aw come on, we’ve had and still have tons of those.
MegaTen1/2, SMT1/2/if, SMT Nine, SMT Ronde, Majin Tensei 1/2, a couple Last Bible games, and so on.
    I’m still excited anyway.

    • Ethan_Twain

Actually, now that I think about it this is going to be the earliest SMT game to ever leave Japan isn’t it? None of the SNES or Gameboy stuff has been localized, it kind of all started with SMT 3 on the PS2.

Now I’m kind of nervous actually. SMT games are way hard, and old games are way hard. The thought of an old SMT game is pretty terrifying.

      • LightZero

Not really. P1 came out in 1996 and it was localize as Revelation: Persona. Soul Hackers came out around 97 for the Sega Saturn. Although you can still say it’s one of the earlier megaten titles to be release in the west.

        • Lordshade

There was also Jack Bros. for the Virtual Boy, if you want to count a mascot game.

And, Persona 1 isn’t even the oldest game in the franchise released in the US, the GBC remake of the first Last Bible game came out in the US as “Revelations:The Demon Slayer”
and the original GB version dates back to 1992!

  • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

No words can express the joy I feel from seeing this. *faints* You have all of my money Atlus.

  • venomz09

    boooo

no one wants this 1990 first person crap…..well not many.

give me another digital devil game..,,damn u atlus.

we want new 3rd person smt games……damnit it all to hell.

    • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Oh shut up and wait for SMT IV

    • ragingmerifes

What matters perspective if the gameplay is good?

    • Zeik56

I find this kind of funny, since DDS is pretty dated at this point too. And considering those games were mostly just running through narrow corridors the 3rd person perspective didn’t actually change all that much. DDS could have easily been a first person dungeon crawler if they wanted.

    • Herok♞

How can you make comments saying no one/ not many people want(s) this when you can just scroll down and see the overwhelming want on this page you had “me” right in the second line but then went back to making over generalizations in the last line.

    • LightZero

And people wonder why most old school megaten fans hate the new school crowd. You seriously gives us megaten fans a bad name. Sigh.

    • Maia Kasoya

Damn it, why does there ALWAYS have to be someone like you on pages where everyone else is happy with something or someone?

    • Testsubject909

Looks like you’re a minority buddy.

  • ragingmerifes

Wow. Wendigo sounds like Yoda, in a way.

  • Foryth

One of the main reasons I bought a 3DS! I’m glad I was not mistaken! :) (This along with EO4 and Bravely Default(please Squeenix!) mostly.)

  • Brandon001

    awesome.

  • darkfox1

    Hyped as hell….

  • darkfox1

Wow ATLUS is too godlike :D

  • sfried

Is there a longer version of the song used in the trailer (#X by wink wink)?

  • Sergio Macellaro

Good news. Atlus always step up above your spectations. But Xseed…I will grow old before play TiTs Sc and Y’s Celceta…

  • $36598391

I like that Atlus kept the first person dungeon crawling, first person battles and random battles
