You Can Play Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII In Japanese With English Text

Square Enix with the help of Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong translated Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 into Chinese. What makes the Asia version interesting is these have Japanese voiceovers and English subtitles.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will get the same treatment. SCEH confirmed an Asia version with Japanese voiceovers and an option for either Traditional Chinese or English subtitles.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is slated for release next year in Japan, North America, Europe, and other Asia regions.

well i’m prefectly happy with english text and english voiceovers but i know this will make some people very happy

  • Don

question does all “other Asian region” games contain english text and japanese voices?

    • Heropon Rikki

      Yes

    • Pokahontas McGuigan

Its uncommon but it happens once in a while. Ffxiii and ragnarok odessey chinese versions had english support but persona chinese games dont

      • Don

        bummer so its not standardized..

how about graces f anyone knows?

        • Aoshi00

Actually only very few Asian ver have Jpn voice overs w/ Eng subtitles, they’re more like the exception.

Most Asian ver are exactly like the Jpn ver. For Tales games, the Asian ver all have Jpn text and voices, just like the Jpn ver but slightly cheaper.

    • http://twitter.com/MrChieftain Mr.Chieftain

The FFXIII Asian version that i have doesn’t have japanese voices so i’m not sure if all asian version of lightning returns will have it though. I think that if it has the option to change your text from chinese to english or vice versa then i guess you can also change the voice to japanese.

      • Aoshi00

I think there were actually two Asian ver for both 13 & 13-2. One was Asian ver (w/ Eng.language) which is the same as the US ver, and the other Asian ver (w/ Jpn language), w/ Jpn voices + Chinese/Eng sub. FF13 are the ones getting this special treatment w/ the help of Sony HK. Usually most Asian ver are exactly like the Jpn ver, w/ Jpn text and voices. Guess I would get both the Jpn & US ver again like 13 & 13-2…

The above screen shot talks about some murders, hopefully it has some interesting sidequests w/ Lightning playing the detective :)

        • MrGlitters

I heard the “asia region” games can’t buy DLCs from the North American store, only the asia one. Which I believe may be a hassle as I expect SE to sell this game with DLCs again.

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, some DLCs are compatible across regions some aren’t so you never know. I think it’s better to stick w/ the DLCs from PSN of that region when you buy the Asian ver, like the Hong Kong PSN, but you need to get the point cards in HK dollars. 13-2 had tons of DLCs and it doesn’t seem like there would be a GotY ed that comes w/ everything. I import the Jpn ver as well, but rarely get DLC on Jpn PSN since Jpn yen cards are so expensive..

        • http://twitter.com/MrChieftain Mr.Chieftain

Yeah kinda like Dark Souls having 2 versions in asia which is a pain. The one i have is the asian ver which is like the NA ver so i decided to check the asia psn store to buy the dlc but to my surprise the dlc is not compatible to my copy. Fortunately someone said that the NA artorias dlc works with my asian copy.

          • Aoshi00

wow, that’s a surprise.. usually I just stick w/ either Jpn ver or NA ver, and never the Asian ver even though they’re cheaper.. The Sonic Generations Casino pinball DLC (exclusive for Gamestop pre-order in the US) is available on PSN/XBL for Europe and Japan, but not the US, I was wondering if the Jpn DLC would work w/ the US copy, but I don’t want to take any chance to buy it and then find out it won’t work.

    • kroufonz

not all, this gen sony HK the one that llove doing this jp voice+eng text like in recently minna no golf/ ragnarok/ ffxiii. P4G get jpvoice + chinese n korean text but lack of english text (which i suspect index have something to do with tis decision)

  • Paradox me

That’s cool, I suppose, although I don’t understand the continued hatred for dubs.

The quality of lip syncing and the dubs themselves have improved significantly since the 90s or so, to the point where there’s usually no difference whatsoever between a native English title and a dubbed Japanese one.

    • Alfy Masamune

have you not heard Lightnings English voice……her voice is so boring, make me want to sleep.

      • riceisnice

It might be boring, but it fits Lighting who’s suppose to be all “Cool” and stuff. Honestly, I can’t imagine a better voice for her.

Plus, I’m sick of those screeching harpies from Japanese voices. NOBODY actually talks like that in Japan. NOBODY.

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

Noooo its better automatically cause its japaneeeeese

        • Yvonne Tsang

Well, there IS a difference between being cool and sounding bored. She just doesn’t offer much variation in her range of “emotions”. She’s pretty overshadowed by the supporting cast. Contrast Serah to Lightning’s narration in XIII-2. It’s astounding how much more colour Serah’s voice gives in comparison.

I would have bought this, but FF dubs have been excellent since XII. That and I’m absolutely smitten with Troy Baker’s voicework.

        • Tien Ron

i agree Japanese voices are overrated and sounds horrible to the ear with they high pitch over-exaggerated tones

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

          indeed sir

      • Nemesis_Dawn

Lightning’s English voice fits her perfectly.

    • Barrit

I’m pretty happy about this. I just prefer the Japanese voices over the English. Also, remember, it isn’t just the voices that are different between versions, but also the original songs. The US versions tend to switch out songs (FFXIII), or remove words from some of the songs (FFXIII-2).

  • XypherCode

I like my games to be NA region 1 but for me I prefer to have JP voice overs with English text/subtitles so that’s the only reason I buy the Asian version of some games. Including this. :)

  • s07195

Is the article unfinished? I got that feeling with the last line there.

Eheh, I’m guessing Spencer wrote “Candlejack” somewhere and then edited it out but he still got kidnapped. lol oh wow this meme is kinda lame I mean, I don’t really understand why people believe this “Candlejack” crap, do they really think they’re goin-

  • Estrius

Why doesn’t they include original voices for every regions like FFXIII? What’s their fucking problem? Not everyone is a casual dubbing eater for fuck’s sake.

    • Darkmanwls

Judging from the terrible grammar and spelling in your post, i think it’s better you just use the english dub. It’s better for you, you could learn a thing or two.

    • http://twitter.com/Klarktastic Klark / Bengalinha

you do realize that they have two separate versions over there? one with english voices and one with japanese voices.

      • kroufonz

        there is three version

      Welcome.

  • Sano Tony

yes this is very good, her jap voice is better

    • Kaihedgie

      Nope

    • Niyari

      yup, maaya sakamoto is godlike

  • Nemesis_Dawn

Well, that’s nice for people who like that sort of thing, I guess.

Personally, I love the English voices, but I know there are some who don’t, so this is good for them.

  • Vodoka

It’s cool that there’s Japanese voice option, but what about the user interface? Is that in English too?

  • http://www.falgram.com/ Falmung

This needs to be done more in all games. I don’t have any problems with the voices in this game dubbed. However in other games I would love to have this option.

  • http://twitter.com/Nates4Christ Nate

I decree that all games must hearby do this. Especially ones with horrible dubs like the last story. and awesome games like ex troopers and vc 3.

    • Hraesvelgr

I think you played a different version of Last Story than me…

    • LynxAmali

      -The Last Story

I was with you until there.
      I lost it.

    • Tien Ron

the last stories voices were great and it fit every character, what are you talking about??!!!

  • kroufonz

I’m glad they keep doing this and announcing it before the game released anywhere in the world. saving me some money, since i’d love me some maaya sakamoto.

with current state of the FF especially XIII series it’s hard to double dipping the JP and eng version.

if only sqex could try and make what they did with SO4 international a standard (dual voice with multiple subtitle (not only english), they releasing COD with english voice in japan but reluctant to give japanese voice of their game in the US release:P

    • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

Blame MS and their small optical discs. While SE could include both tracks on PS3 they won’t do it as it would make the 360 version, which can only include one audio track, look inferior and hence MS would threaten not to grant publishing rights. I mean, Kitase was “surprised” when western gamers inquired about the original voice acting in XIII. Tells you how much in touch this guy is with the people paying his bills.

Options are always great and I understand that to people who don’t know Japanese it’s impossible to play with the original VAs. I simply play all games in their native production language (played Witcher in Polish, Gothic in German etc.) as this is the way the script writers and original creators intended it. A translation is always a mere approximation/adaptation of the original. In some very rare cases, like MGS, the English VAs actually sound way better. Got the same impression from MGR after watching the demo in English and Japanese. Besides in MGR’s case “Herr Doktor” has a much better Eastern German accent than in the Jap. one. Same goes for Boris and his Russian accent.

Why the hate when you have options. Sure it sucks that the NA and EU (which is based on the NA-release) do not offer that option but the ones to blame are MS and Kitase, nobody else.

  • Kai2591

    Praise the Asian versions!

  • RablaAndrews

Why would anyone play a FF13 game with no Ali Hillis D=

  • Suzaku Kururugi

Is the menu text and stuff also English?

  • ragingmerifes

    This should happen more often.

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

The Asian branch practically puts all other overseas branches to shame… It’s the place where you could get both Western and Eastern games(but not all, sadly) and slightly cheaper… If we’re lucky, SCEH could give treatments like this in the future…

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

awesome, depending on release date’s I’ll probably get both, I was a fan for both dubs in XIII-2 I wasn’t sure on the japanese dub at first but it grew on me as the game went on. both dubs suit the character’s imo

  • jeka69

Nah, maybe not for me. I’m one of the minority who actually loves NA’s VA than the original Japanese.

    • Kaihedgie

      Yer not in the minority

    • Hraesvelgr

In fact, I’m fairly sure those that prefer Japanese VA are just a vocal minority. I’m not saying one side is more “correct” than the other (personally, my preference depends on the game in question), but don’t assume you’re in the minority just because the other side openly expresses their thoughts more often.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Now this should at least shut a few mouth up. Good job SCEH!

  • Hinataharem

That’s a neat option. Although I usually can’t play an RPG if not in spoken english

  • Sesshomaru

I like Liara, I’m used to her now.

  • Tony

I don’t get sub purists. How many anime/jrpg fan would there be with the god awful dubs of our child hood. The dialogue in FF 13 3 will be just a cheesy in both languages, but in Japanese it’ll sound better to the untrained ear, how many Japanese anime and games ever had bad voice acting in your opinion, it may sound like none, but that’s because one may lack the ear to understand it.

I’m Dub all the way unless it’s criminally bad or cut with no uncut version, or no available in English.

BTW I once read on a forum somewhere that all thing Dubbed are terrible and that Japanese things should never be translated. We he was a right idiot, I bet his first anime was DBZ or Sailor Moon. Besides English MGS is way better than it’s native tongue version, and I like FF 13′s serious Lighting in English, although Hope can go suck it because if I ever see him again it’ll be too soon.

  • Haseyo

Square Enix does a perfect job with English voices. Hell, better than they do their Japanese VA’s (Deergod Dissidia in Japanese is hella annoying). I shall still wait for the NA version.

    • Elvick

Eh, Vanille was terrible in my opinion. She had a fake accent, which she forgot half the time and then when she remembered it she laid it on thick.

Drove me insane. Overall though, yeah they’re good with dubs. Still would like Japanese audio though. I love having opinions. Makes second playthroughs more interesting, since you can experience it in another language (in terms of voices)

  • karasuKumo

As nice of a touch as this is I’ll still play in English for continuity, and possibly for Caius’ voice if it is heard in flashbacks or if he makes a surprise appearance haha. Damn his English voice is amazing.

  • Jeimuzu

glad to heart about english text of this game but how about the prequel? i mean the ff type 0

  • Jeimuzu

glad to heart about english text of this game but how about the prequel? i mean the ff type 0, i wish there is still working on it

    • Steven Higgins

Type 0 isn’t a prequel. It’s a completely separate game set in a different world with the same mythology. And it’s been out in Japan for a while now.

  • Göran Isacson

Now what I’m wondering, is if this is going to be available on all regions or if the game released in the US only gets English and the games released in Europe only gets one language (whichever is the language it gets dubbed into).

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Dear lord I’m missing out. Where the hell did this sub vs dub war come from? So what am I if I don’t like listening to voices at all and read their lips?

  • Bobby Jennings

This pretty much encourages importing. It looks like this is what I’m going to do too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624900076 Keandre Holeman

Would be cool if it were like Naruto, where I am used to the Japanese voice. But I’m used to Lightning’s English voice. And honestly I think it fits better. It’s perfect for her character.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kane-Turner/734310890 Kane Turner

The real question is, is the the Asia version the English sub version or is a separate Chinese + English version like prev installments.

  • Jurippe

The English Subs have been removed!
