Fire Emblem: Awakening Has A First-Person Mode For Battles

By Laura . January 16, 2013 . 9:00am

In Fire Emblem, when two units face off, they’re taken to a battle screen where they trade blows. In Fire Emblem: Awakening, you’re given a few options to liven the experience up a bit.

The first is camera control. You can allow the camera to pan however it wishes around the two (or three, if you have support) characters, or you can have it stay still, covering both characters as they trade blows like in previous Fire Emblem games.

The other is the option to have the camera switch to first person, where it moves along with your character as though you yourself are performing the actions. Take a look at the video above, where this is demonstrated.

If you’re using a character like Chrom, who leaps in with a sword to strike his opponent, you’ll see the sword flash across the screen as he jumps forward. Or, if you’re using Frederick, who rides horseback, you’ll see the back of the horse’s head in your screen as well, as demonstrated above.

Finally, in battle, you can also pause the fighting sequence, fast-forward it to 2x the speed, or slow it to half the normal speed.

  • For once the battle screen models look actually good, sorry but I highly doubt I’ll ever use that first person mode :/

    • Steven Bambic

They look good, the only flaw to them is their feet! THEY HAVE NO FEET!

      • Pockystix

REAL MEN (and apprently women) HAVE NO NEED FOR FEET

        • Arrei

You’ll get no feet from me!

        • Tiramii

Having feet is for the weak! :V

  • Yvonne Tsang

I’m definitely gonna dick around with this.

  • More options are good.

  • Ethan_Twain

Well that’s kind of cool. It’s great to see that after the 3D combat animations in previous Fire Emblem games (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn) were so crummy Intelligent Systems has put so much care and customization into the combat animations this time around. Can these settings be mixed and matched? Can I do 2X speed in first person? Or can I take my freeze frame out of slow-mo?

    • You can change camera speed from any of the POV settings, and you can pause while doing 2x or 0.5x speed.

  • Tom_Phoenix

The first-person view is kind of pointless for this type of game, but having the option to speed up animations is always welcome.

    • If people like it I don’t think it’s that pointless. It looks pretty dynamic in first-person and I bet it has a good 3D effect.

  • A neat little feature. Nothing game-changing but cool none the less. I’ll play around with it a bit,

interesting is not something i will always use but it’s something i can have fun with

  • Godman

Well I’m gonna have fun flipping around these two views.
Especially seeing through the eyes of my own character!

  • fireemblembeast

Cool! I wonder if the demo I’ll be playing in a few hours will let me try the options out! :)
Gosh, there’s so much daily news for this game. Oh Nintendo, you’re spoiling me! X)

    • This wasn’t from Nintendo, it was from us!

      • fireemblembeast

        XD Yeah, well…
They put character profiles up on facebook!
        …Okay, okay, thank YOU. ;D

        • It’s all right, I was just pulling your leg. :P

      • fuzzy_hobo

Out of curiosity, Ishaan, has Nintendo specified what you can and can’t show from the game before the release date/review embargo? I’ve seen other sites record/post snippets of early game stuff on YouTube too…

        • Unfortunately, we don’t have the equipment to do direct 3DS video capture, so you won’t be seeing that from us. Maybe at some point in the future, but right now we lack both the equipment and the manpower to do 3DS video stuff.

But yeah, Nintendo always do provide very clear embargo guidelines for every game they send, including this one.

I know this is somewhat non-sequitur.
but is there any word from which retailers the 3ds bundle will be sold in? and if not (at the moment), then could you inform as soon as you get the news. please and thank you :D

I’d like to get mine off amazon because I still have my free trial prime membership :P

          • They haven’t said anything yet, but if you want specific answers regarding retailers for the bundle, I’d recommend writing in to NOA support and they’ll very likely be able to tell you. You should hear from them within 24 hours of asking. :)

          • I called Gamestop a few hours ago in the midwest US. They’re taking preorders. In fact, they’ve been taking them for two days now! Their site didn’t mention it at all. I hope Amazon does…

  • MrRobbyM

Pretty neat. Should look pretty cool with 3D on.

  • I think these are awesome features. It adds extra depth especially in relation to your Avatar character.

  • EmptyWarrior

More options is always a good thing!

  • I had not expected this. I do like surprises! Thank you, Siliconera.

  • Visa Vang

    That’s pretty unique.

  • YoshEE

Seem awesome and might try it out

  • Kai2591

First-person views in a JRPG looks interesting! as if the battle screen feature wasn’t nice enough, haha~

…but I’m not sure if i should get this game…. I have had a very unsuccessful history with strategy JRPGs that utilized a grid system like this…Vanguard Bandits, FF Tactics, Advance Wars, Front Mission 4, Agarest War – all fail fail fail!…I can only play up to a certain point when it becomes too difficult for me…*sigh*

Something like Valkyria Chronicles I can handle though, and most other forms of RPG….

The pause/speed control is the best part of this. Super Fire Emblem Wars/
