<< Last week’s software sales chart

The week after the holidays is when sales drop across the board, and that’s what happened in Japan last week. Everything—hardware and software—dropped, and the top-20 sales chart comprised primarily of the strongest recent releases.

Being the current craze in Japan, Animal Crossing: New Leaf held on to its #1 spot, with another 83,000 copies sold. Following it was New Super Mario Bros. 2 at the #2 spot, with less then 22,000 copies moved during the week. Also worth noting are Yakuza 5 sales, which are at nearly 555,000 now.

Meanwhile, Level 5’s Fantasy Life dropped out of the top-20 entirely, although Konami’s Magician’s Quest: Town of Magic managed to hang on at the #15 position. Finally, barely making it into the top-20 was Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney. This is probably the last time we’ll be seeing the game in the top-20 chart, so bid adieu to it while you can.

Finally, it bears mentioning that Run for Money Tousouchuu has blasted past Namco Bandai’s expectations. Namco expected Run for Money to sell 300,000 copies by the end of March. It’s currently already at 387,000 copies sold.

On the hardware front, Nintendo 3DS sales stabilized, while Wii U and Vita sales dropped. Wii U sales will likely remain low until Nintendo release more significant software for the system.

Everything besides 3DS and AC is super low. Wii U is worrying, but expected with such an empty release schedule.

  • Did Siliconera already do a rundown of the best selling games in Japan in 2012? I would like to see a list of best selling games of all time in Japan someday too~ Probably a lot of work but interesting to see.

    • We’ll cover that once Media Create publish their white paper for 2012. :)

  • Famitsu sales chart list Fantasy Life in the Top 20 which is very strange.

    • Enterbrain and Media Create use different tracking methods/avenues, so there are always discrepancies between the two.

      • Yup, but for a game to chart on the top 20 and in another doesn’t even appear among the top 30 is very strange :C

At number 4 this week! 0_0

Man, Wii U hasn’t even cracked a million yet… is that common, this early into most consoles life-cycle, or is it an anomaly? Also, fight on Layton! Abooout 75-80 % or so-ish of the initial shipment sold now… I’d say that’s okay, even if it wasn’t a smash-hit success from the get-go.

    • I think Wii U in general is representative of what console launches will look like in Japan from now on. Wait until PS4 comes out. :P

      • Göran Isacson

Ah. So not as good as sales in the past, but the changing market may make it so that this is going to be the NEW benchmark, so to speak?

  • What the?!?!No psvita game in the list?Good move Nintendo.PS just need to work harder XD.While you do that let Nintendo dominate the most buy game list in Japan
