Rayman Legends Delayed; Now Coming To Xbox 360 And PS3, Too

By Ishaan . February 7, 2013 . 8:30am

Rayman Legends is no longer Wii U-exclusive, Ubisoft announced this morning. The platformer has been delayed from its February release date to September 2013, and will be released for the Wii U, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“We heard from many Xbox & Playstation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system”, says Geoffroy Sardin, Ubisoft’s EMEA Chief Marketing & Sales Officer. “We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game.”

All three versions of the game are being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier.

How many games have been ported to Wii / Wii U months after coming out on other systems? I don’t see why they can’t release the Wii U version on the intended date.

    • J_Joestar

Really, it just seems like a jerk move to delay the Wii U version for so long for the sake of porting it. I doubt it would hurt their sales much to release the U version now and the ports later.

    • Kalis Konig

I was just about to say this! I’m personally a little ticked at this move. I have all three systems and still intend to get the WiiU version. The so called fans who wanted it on PS3 and 360 would still buy it if they had to wait a few months which would be understandable to begin with. If it was going to be a WiiU exclusive wth should WiiU owners have to wait yet even longer just because they want to port the game to other consoles now?

  • That’s quite the delay, almost a full year. This doesn’t bode well for Nintendo either losing one of their more promising exclusives.

  • kylehyde

same month than GTA V. Talking about shooting themselves on the foot

    • Oh shit, I never thought of this. Wow, what a terrible idea.

    • DesmaX

Oh crap. How I’m gonna buy this now?
Hope October doesn’t have cool games…

      • Learii

        i agree lol

    • Well, I will be picking up Legends over GTA V. If there’s one thing I learned as a PS3 owner looking forward to a new GTA title, it’s to wait. Wait until the complete edition including all DLC is released. Here’s hoping we won’t be receiving a severely gimped port of the 360 version again -_-

Still, releasing the same month as a sure-fire mainstream game is not very prudent. Kinda surprised at the date. Wouldn’t May or June be safer?!

    • Peeka Chu

Shot to the head – terminal. At least you can hop along in the former scenario. This game will be D.O.A.

      • But DOA isn’t that great either :P

        • KingRuff

I’m just gonna assume you’re joking.

          • I’ve liked DOA less and less with each iteration, but yes, that comment was a joke on D.O.A.

          • Peeka Chu

I got it and appreciate the humour despite our disagreement in a different thread :P

          • Well even if you hate me, that doesn’t mean you have to hate me :3

          • KingRuff

Ok, I got the joke I just wanted to see if it was intentional.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Don’t think its going to be hurt over that pretty sure people who play GTA wouldn’t even touch rayman

      • I think it’s the other way around. A large portion of people who play Rayman likely also play GTA. It’s just that big.

      • Altritter

Pretty sure I planned on picking up both, and still do. I’m not saying I’m the standard but there might be more overlap then you think.

  • Ouch, I was looking forward to it for sure, but I might as well get it on PS3 when it comes out. Probably will be some deal for plus members.

  • DarthSithZero

No vita version? That’s a shame I really enjoyed Origins in my vita, it’s one of the best games

    • Well, the engine is more advanced now (kinda 2.5 D). I won’t lose hope, however, as there’s still some time left. Origins is still one of the best and best-looking games on Vita. Having Legends on Vita would be a blast.

    • Learii

yea so we can use touch screen and the sixaxis just liike wii u gamepad lol with 4 co-op online that be great

  • Cameron Ward

WHAT?! this is stupid! i mean seriously. did they crack under pressure because of the backlash they got for Rayman Legends being Wii U exclusive? they shouldnt fold under winy fanboys. they should have just accepted that Rayman Legends was Wii U only and gotten a Wii U to play it.

    • I doubt it had anything to do with whiny fanboys and everything to do with their sales forecast.

      • Cameron Ward

you think its because they are nervous they wont make enough money by just the Wii U version alone?

        • XypherCode

IMO that can be true considering the PS360 already has a stable install base. I mean c’mon the Wii U just came out. Maybe they think they can make more money out of it.

          • Cameron Ward

it just seems stupid that Nintendo is trying to go out of their way to make sure they get games from third parties onto their consoles and yeah, they still have Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2, but Rayman Legends was made with the Wii U in mind and not for the PS3 and 360. i have all 3 console so im not being a fanboy here. it just seems stupid that Nintendo didnt go out of their way to keep it as a Wii U Exclusive.

          • XypherCode

Ninty can’t really “force” Ubi for it, not to mention it’s Ubisoft’s game. They just might ruin a good relationship between them, and I think the exclusivity of the title might’ve already been expired like DesmaX said, but who knows. Maybe in Ubisoft’s point of view…it’s just that business is business.

          • Cameron Ward

thats always the case isnt it? business is business. now that i have calmed down, it is nice that they are getting the game also, but i still got my Wii U pre order so yeah….just kind of sucks still you know?

          • XypherCode

Yup. It’s great that everybody can now play the game. But of course you still get that feeling. Just think of it this way. The Wii U version is the definitive version of the bunch. xD

          • Cameron Ward

i just hope the whole Wii U experience of Rayman Legends is the best version of that game.

          • Wake

It wasn’t entirely Nintendo’s fault. Fans of the series complained about being forced to play as Murphy for a good chunk of the game. Ubisoft had to rethink and retool the gameplay so that the Murphy sections wouldn’t be forced on the player. That left them with a game that could be viable for other consoles, hence the logical move to make it multiplat.

          • Cameron Ward

can you prove this? because i didnt mind the murphy segments, but then again, i only played the demo so yeah

          • Wake

I like the Murphy sections too. Anyway here…

They talk about how a good portion of the game was Murphy sections. After this the backlash from fans followed and then the delays. It’s more of reading between the lines, but the timing of everything is suspect so it seems kinda obvious.

          • Cameron Ward

hmm well, i hope the Wii U version is still the better version and not watered down, but yeah i can see why gamers would be upset if a majority of the game was playing as murphy. i mean, its called Rayman Legends and not murphy legends.

          • Wake

Yeah, I’m not even sure how they’ll apply the Murphy sections for the other consoles. Maybe a reticle on the screen? Anyway, I’m still picking up the Wii U version, it’s just heartbreaking that we have to wait a bit longer.

          • KingRuff

Why did they design it like that in the first place? Who really wants to play as Murphy and click things, while their friends play as Rayman and Co. the entire time.

          • Wake

When the Wii was new they made Raving Rabbids to showcase what the console could potentially do. It’s the same with the Wii U and Legends.

        • DesmaX

Pretty sure they just had a exclusivity contract with Nintendo that expired today

        • Yep. Obviously. It isn’t like the first game lit the sales charts up.

  • Spirit Macardi

I hope this doesn’t mean they’re going to water down the game’s features simply because the PS3 and 360 don’t have the capabilities that the Wii U does. Since if you want to talk about a game that truly had the console it was being made for in mind, this was it.

  • Neutron15

after Legends, Ubisoft!!! continue on Rayman 4

  • SirRichard

“The platformer has been delayed from its February release date to September 2013”

    September 2013.

Alas, poor Rayman Legends, I hardly knew ye.

  • sd28

third party’s going out of there way to make sure there software doesn’t sell on wii u already

  • zferolie

Oh man. One of the reasons I bought a Wii U was because of this game… and now it’s going multiplatform. I mean, this is good for Ubisoft, more money for them, but now I had 1 less reason to buy a Wii U, which I barely use as it is…

    • Kevin Tan

I’m worried the game’s quality will suffer as a result of going multiplatform. :

      • zferolie

Yeah, that and it’s going against GTA5. They may say they have 2 different audiences, but it’s not like releasing a disney movie the same day as a Horror movie. I don’t think companies understand that many gamers play many types of games.

I myself won’t be buying GTA5, but I know this would effect a lot of people.

  • Wake

The truth is not a lot of people bought Rayman Origins. The exclusivity announcement made people pay attention, they were talking about this game. They won over that Nintendo crowd with that move. I thought that this game was pretty much complete. I don’t mind it being multiplat, it’s the logical move. They got people talking about the game, so why not cash in on that and make it available to a broader audience. But moving it to September is questionable. Why not just release the Wii U version earlier? Wii U owners are hungry for games right now. The latter half of the year is going to be messy. With the next Nintendo Direct focusing on third party developers, I’m assuming that games are coming for the Wii U later this year, so this game might be lost in the shuffle. Hype on new consoles is going to be on a high and c’mon…you don’t release a game on the same month as GTA V.

    • Kevin Tan

I fear that the game might have been just been sent to die. :( My BIGGEST worry is the game will be watered down for compatibility for all platforms rather than leveraging the strengths of the Wii-U platform which was the biggest draw in the first place.

      • Wake

I feel that way too. What’s annoying is they did the same thing to Rayman Origins.

  • kupomogli

Moving this to September isn’t really that bad of a move. Third party games haven’t been selling very well and if Wii U owners also own other platforms, Rayman Legends would be against the release of Aliens, Crysis, Metal Gear, Tomb Raider, and God of War which release around two weeks before and after.

In September Rayman Legends only has to compete against one game.

    • KingRuff

But that game is GTAV! Kids everywhere are going to flock to that. Also if you only have one choice for a game in September, 9/10 people would buy GTA over Rayman simply because its GTA.

I am in no way saying Rayman is a bad game.(Just in case someone tries to twist my words around)

      • kupomogli

And most people would choose atleast one of the many releases coming out near Rayman the release of Rayman if it was released this month.

I mean Rayman Origins didn’t do so hot. What makes you expect people to just flock to this one? It atleast has a chance against GTA5. It’s not like GTA5 will reach Call of Duty sales.

So there’s atleast 100 million possible sales.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Well more and more Wii-U exclusives are getting nonexclusive. Plus GTA 5 is coming out at the same time. Hmmmm Both look awesome! *thinking*

  • I do hope it comes out for the Vita too. I’ve played Origins with it. Just wanted to continue playing the series on it.

  • gsnap

In one sense, This game needs to be multiplatform to get good sales. In another sense, why would you screw over your Wii U fanbase by pushing the release back? Yes, technically Wii U owners can still buy it, but they want it now. They need it now. They were expecting it now. Some kid’s Birthday was on Rayman’s release date, and now he won’t be getting it. Way to go, Ubisoft!

Ok, that last part was a bit of a joke, but my point remains. Every Wii U owner excited for Rayman Legends just got a punch to the gut.

  • Sergio Briceño

:( Too bad some people have to wait longer now. It’s good for me though, I haven’t picked up a Wii U yet because I’m waiting for the good games, too bad this was the first I was looking forward too.

  • SupaPhly

why couldnt they have just released the wii-u version this month anyway?

  • MikelAL93

This delay is sad, but I’m still gonna get this on Wii U while I get Origins for the PS3.

After all, the Wii U is the lead platform for Rayman Legends, am I quite right?

    • Kevin Tan

Certain levels like ones requiring the Wii U’s specific capabilities will most likely not show up in the PS3 or 360 versions… if they kept them.

  • I wonder if it loses the Wii U exclusive content or whatever.

  • $39420547

i wasn’t sure about this but it’s surely not a surprise

  • $29082171

Ninja Gaiden, Resi Revelations, Theathrythm, Rhythm Thief and now Rayman.

Nintendo’s really bad at keeping exclusives.

    • sandra10

They did what they could – it’s either get those games as timed exclusives or not exclusive at all.

And from the sound of it, Mirror of Fate is the next “exclusive” to be ported.

    • They are still worth playing and 3DS has many other games to play.

Theatrhythm and Rhythm Thief got gutted for free to play didn’t it? Not everybody wants to deal with that.

  • Herok♞

I really don’t see why the game needs this long of a delay, since the game was supposed to be out in 3 weeks, clearly it couldn’t have been done, since with origins they just released the 3DS version when it was ready so they have no problem making people wait.

  • That is too long of a delay. Maybe if they kept it exclusive and rush it the game may of gotten a lot of bugs?

  • Tails the Foxhound

So if all it takes is for the base to say they’re impressed by the game and that they want to play it we should be getting South Park, Splintercell: Black List, and Watch Dogs for Wii U too right? No, that’d be too much like right. But hey, at least we got Rabbids Land and Just Dance right?

    • Kalis Konig

Exactly. Ubi is full of it. I remember one developer claiming it would never be ported to begin with because it’s design is heavily made around the game-pad.

  • Kalis Konig

WTF!? wasn’t this supposed to come out in like 3 weeks on WiiU? I’m not mad at the multiplatform thing because I’m a fan of all 3 consoles but this is a really dick move.

  • Crevox

Not a fan of delaying a game for no reason.

Yes, it might make sense from a marketing standpoint (somehow), but to me it’s silly denying your fans like this.
