Rayman Legends On Wii U Held Back For Xbox 360 And PS3 Versions

By Ishaan . February 7, 2013 . 11:41pm

Rayman Legends, previously a Wii U-exclusive game, is now headed to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as well. Additionally, while the game was initially slated for release in February, it has now been delayed to September.

This isn’t because of development issues, however. Ubisoft confirmed to Digital Spy that they’re holding the Wii U version of the game back to release it alongside the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions in September.

"There are no issues with the game development. All of the information was in the press release, the only reason for the delay is to release on multiple platforms," Ubisoft public relations specialist Sarah Irvin shared.

  • Poppycock I say! Makes no sense business wise. Why would you do that to your development team?

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I guess it also has to do with that simultaneous release policy for multiplatform games that Microsoft has.

      • ^When did they add that? Recently right because that hasnt been followed. All that is going to do is hurt the games sales. September has way to much coming out the gate and February was the optimum time for release

The article is from 2011, so it’s been a while.

So is Ubisoft basically scared that their title might not reach the 360? They did say they only wanted to port it to other platforms because fans wanted it as well, so I still see no point why the Wii U version needs to be delayed as well. Unless Ubisoft really wanted to rack up some money with this multi-platform release.

In my mind they will just lose out. Going from highlighted title of the month, only wiiu title for at least a month in a pretty decent climate to a packed season full of titles from all platforms… that is similar to what they did with rayman: origins. Whic sold horribly.

WiiU version now, MP releases later would have made the most sense.

Calling BS: they allowed Far Cry and AC3, both of which had exclusive ps3 content(which your link says they also don’t allow)

This move screams “Buyout”: companies don’t delay nearly finished games months only to release them during crouded timeframes they historically lose in…. wiithout ample supplemental pay.

        Nintendo suffers.
        Gamers suffer
        UBI suffers.

only Sony, MS and 360/ps3 owners gain anything out of this. That makes no sense.

        • MrSirFeatherFang

Were those those exclusive contents DLC? The policy in the link only talks about everything on the disc itself.

Something tells me Ubisoft was expecting the WIi U to sell much better. The slow sales are likely why they delayed the game the second time (first time was probably either for technical reasons or to avoid Mario). I always believed the game was supposed to go multi… but eventually, not immediately.

Ouch. I feel bad for Wii U owners. In fact, out of the entire lineup of games for it, this was the only one that interested me. Ubisoft, you people are morons. Let’s release it around the busiest time of the year for video games and put no marketing behind it!

  • Neutron15

expect kinect features for the 360 lol

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Bad call, they should have released the Wii-u one before the ps3/360. Thats a bad way to make money.

  • Spirit Macardi

I love the massive double-standard at play. I mean, there never seems to be a problem with releasing a game on Nintendo consoles after everyone else, yet suddenly a game that was being made specifically for a Nintendo console is being held back because they decided to port it.

  • ronin4life

There is a little more info coming from miiverse:

Bassicaly, if the account is genuinly xavier from ubi, we can now speculate that:
This occured VERY recently. Hell, the ps3/360 versions may have been started last week
This was always an exclusive, and ubi broke it to go multi plat.
Ubi spent a lot of overtime to rush it out, yet suddenly find no problem with delaying it…??

  • pressstart

Ubisoft could have just went the Tecmo route with NG3RE, a timed exclusive. Or do a Konami and announce the chance of being ported to another system. I feel bad for the devs though.

  • sd28

wow this is dumb and sad

  • AuraGuyChris

GTA V is gonna kill their September sales now…
I mean, isn’t the platforming genre kind of dead anywhere else that isn’t a Nintendo console?

    • Well hopefully, GTA 5 could get a Wii U port.

  • Well this game no longer has priority to me. I dont doubt it will be a good game, but i will be so consumed on purchasing pokemon in october, that i doubt i will buy any $60 games the month before. Im sorry, but this is no longer a release date purchase for me.

  • Chris Lane

You would think logically, if the game is good, theyd want to release it early, and when it got mad good reviews, once again assuming its good, it would only build the hype for it for the other systems. This is a really bad move on their part IMO

  • >Additionally, while the game was initially slated for release in February, it has now been delayed to September.

    Nope. Nope. Nope.

  • Covnam

Wow, that’s really disappointing to hear. I thought this was the case originally when the two announcements came out at the same time, but I thought I was just being negative.
I can’t think of a proper reason that they would hold back a (presumably nearly) completed game on one console to put it out on two others seven months later.

  • Tails the Foxhound

It’s cool Ubisoft. No really I understand… So where’s my Watch Dogs Wii U?

  • Interesting way to shoot themselves in the foot. Legends worked fine as a launch window game for the WiiU, but by next September people will have moved on. It’s almost as if Ubisoft is dedicated to making sure their modern Rayman titles don’t sell.

  • fds_nextdart

I don’t like Nintendo but damn, that’s more than unprofessional on Ubisoft’s part. However, more than anything, if there’s something bothering me isn’t the pointless delay to which they are submitting people but rather the fact that this was supposed to be an exclusive (at least, for a while) and now…it just isn’t? Just like that~?
